Just a note of caution - some aircraft instruments used radium paint to make them glow in the dark, and they are rather radioactive. It would be worth finding someone with a Geiger counter to check them out. You don't want to get this paint inside you, which is a particular risk if it has turned to powder.

A lot of the WWII instruments used a phosphorescent paint that had no radium in it. Ultraviolet panel lights caused it to glow.

Here's a little device that detects radiation: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015W2HU5I/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Guy wants 120 bucks for this.
It's the short ww1 version, but I don't know real from ripoff.
The sheath says early eighties or seventies(to me.)
Maybe a fifty year old knockoff.
Chances are yours, but I'll pick it up for you if you're sure....
I can't imagine a real one saying
Survival knife
on it.

Those were made for WWII not WW1, and I agree, very probably a knock off, if is says survival knife.

That's a Woodsman's Pal. Still available. The Army issued some of these in WWII and the zipper case had a wire hanger for use on the pistol or ammo belt.

That thing is cool, Mike! Industrial furniture is all the rage.

When I was a kid (1960's) the hospital in my hometown was torn down. It was a brick structure with stucco and ornate pavilion roofs with green wooden eaves, badly aging. My mom was a nurse and she got my dad and my brothers and I inside before the big wrecking ball came. We came home with an operating table (picture a heavy, monstrous, white porcelain base, with steel elevation and pitch cranks like ship wheels) that he turned into a drafting table. I would love to have that thing, but one of my brothers got it. I do have his old Keuffel & Esser. It's disassembled for restoration. Yet another project I have never finished!

Private Lugnutz:

Sounds like your parents helped kick-start your collecting habits!!!

Couple of years back, found a Fredrick Post old cast iron drafting table which was missing the wood table. It was fun working with it.

When I saw the cast iron legs on this jewelry workbench today , it reminded me of the Fredrick Post piece and so decided to pick it up.

Man, I'm glad I had the day off from work today. I feel like I did a lot. Started my day with $40 spent at a yard sale. That bought me a couple of goodies....
2 ton come along
A True Temper wheelbarrow for my wife to put plants in
An old metal rocking chair
A small vise for my drill press
A couple of wood clamps
A Kmart torque wrench
A Reeds rocket nut cracker (my third one; one is spoken for by CRSINMICH)
A huge shop fan
A WiFi extender
A kite for the kiddos
An Eager Beaver 3.7CI 20" chainsaw
And 1/2 gallon of bar & chain oil.

I ended my day with building my girls a small carport for their jeeps which created room in my shop....

One of our chores on Saturdays was to help dad take stuff to the dump. The running joke was we always came back with more stuff than we went there with! But yeah, my dad was old school. Pretty cool guy, too. To supplement his income, he made frames for paintings out of old barn wood. This was way before it was popular to collect old barn wood, way before it started showing up in artsy fartsy stores, and way before farmers started catching on to the fact that there was money in old barn wood!

I rescued this from a scrapper bidder at a local auction of a retiring machine shop.

It's a Walker Turner 20" over head drill press. It works kinda like a radial arm saw. There is nothing I can do with it (no room or 3-phase) I just didn't want it going to the scrap yard. It's currently ballast in my pickup bed 😀

It's only 1 HP so swap the motor out or get a VFD and use the existing motor. The advantage of a VFD is variable speeds...

Or you can adapt a treadmill motor and still have variable speeds...

A small box of tools. I grabbed it for the calipers, depth gage, and square (LSS). the rest is gravy. $15

- 2 die stock / holders / handles. Seem to be older vintage (30s). The upper one has a patent number from the 30s, the bottom one has a faint makers mark of JM Todd, Waterford NY.
- small drill bit index, again with a patent number from the 30s. I would have thought that these existed (and would have been patented) many years earlier.
- an insert bearing
- the gages and calipers I wanted.

Anyone need the die holders or bearing?

Stopped at an esale on the way home yesterday (it was only 25 miles out the way...) as it looked kinda promising.
Picked up a bunch of DBE's, no complete sets but a nice selection nevertheless.

Herbrand 3/8 to 3/4 missing the 1/2-9/16, Craftsman Metric -V- missing the 6/8 and 16/18 and Craftsman =V= deeper offset, not really close to a set. $20. Not bad for a first day price.

If anyone has any of the missing ones, I would love to do some trading...

Paul,
The patent might be peculiar to that particular design. Those kinds of patents (improvements) are very common throughout the mechanical tools and equipment field. Do the bits go through both of those layers and sit on the bottom layer? That may be the trick. If you plug the patent number into the pre-1976 app on the USPTO site, you can retrieve and read a description of the full patent. (And please excuse me if you're already familiar with that. Don't mean to offend.)

Another interesting small haul today...

The little flashlights (literally, two settings – “FLASH” and “OFF”) are distress signal type, US Navy No. D-31, made by G.T. Price Products Inc. I’ve seen them dated to 1945 on several different military flashlight collectors sites. The postal code (“L.A. 31 CALIF.”) supports that, but they could be anything up to 1953. They’re cool little flashing beacons with a big safety clip, ostensibly for flightsuits. Four of the five have bulbs.

The 11” parts holder/pickerupper is made by AIRCRAFT SPECIALTIES, INC. in Lapeer, Michigan. This is the second one I have found from them. The first was marked “AIRCRAFT SPEC., INC.” with a Signal Corps part number (“TL-506/U”). This one has a brand name (“MECHANICAL FINGER”) instead.

The shallow sweep torque attachment is a WRIGHT (Aeronautical) tool, 8T-1651.

The 1/4-inch drive spinner is an Indestro Super 2873. Probably postwar, no earlier than 1945, anyway, but spinners always seem to be missing from midget sets and you never know who is looking for one, so I picked it up.

And a little muslin extra key bag.

The drill stand is a Black & Decker. It must be missing a piece to secure the drill on the platform. If anyone has one of these I’m curious what that piece looks like. I don’t know how old it is (guessing 60’s, maybe 50’s), but I love that bright olive green color. I have a 1940’s catalog I plan to check, but I doubt it’s that old. EDIT: I was pretty close. The patent (2,477,916) dates to August 1949!

LEFT-BEHIND:

Machinists’ chest. This may have had a mfgr’s name somewhere on it at one point, but it may also be homemade. Ornate handles. I like the nut and bolt and tap & die chart under the lid.

I think the drill stand is actually complete. I have some similar early black and decker stands and you had to take two screws out of the front of the drill and actually screw it to the stand. That is what the two screws on the bottom are for and then the set screw looking thing on top would secure it more. I will takes some pics tonight when I get home.

thanks Lugz. I had found the patent, image is attached, some verbage below:

This invention relates to stands or fixtures, more particularly adapted to hold various types of drill bits, wherein such drill bits are conveniently placed and retained in the order of their respective sizes.

A drill stand or holder of this general type may comprise a series of parallel plates of equal thickness, separated from each other by spacer bushings or other means, and held in such fixed relation to each other by rivets, screws or bolts. Two of the above mentioned plates may be provided with like series of holes, slightly larger than the diameters of the drills which they accommodate, said holes increasing or decreasing in diameter each from the other by an increment similar to that by which the drills differ in their consecutive sizes

thanks

Lug, I'm totally surprised the base of the drill stand doesn't have a few holes in it!

What were they asking on the Chest you left behind? That is a cool chest!

Slow M Day weekend for me. I spent more on a box of craft beads for my daughter and SWMBO than on the tools I got... ($5 vs $2)

Plvmb, 10" 1/2 drive extension and from L-r: Long C Craftsman, Lisle, MAC, and three Berylco Be-Cu sockets!

Went to my senior year of high school in Lapeer. Went half days because of over crowding. Got out of school and went directly to an old church downtown. There was a basketball court upstairs, the walls were the out of bounds lines. Downstairs was a swimming pool.

I know what you mean! The previous owner was either very and consistently methodical and precise about his blocking, or he did all his work with the drill swung to the side! :)

I didn't ask. It looks great, but it needed alot of work. Every once in awhile the little guy dressed in white with a halo on my right shoulder wins!

Ah, too funny, dittle. That brings back memories. I went to Catholic schools my whole life, and played CYO basketball. Every gym was like that! And some had radiators lining the walls! You can imagine what it was like for my kids living with me and my intolerance for complaints about hard fouls and facilities that are considered inferior today. :)

Navy k3 signal/spotlight unused. 13v model with all the filters. 10 bucks. Seems to be a 13v landing light bulb made by Mazda(pre 1945 GE brand, not the car. I had to look that up)

Invicta watch boxes. Same as pelicans or damn close. A buck each.

Also bought 60 pre ww2 life magazines and a 29 post war to rotate out the ww2 ones now in the guest rooms. 40 bucks. Perfect condition. Everyone loves those magazines in the guest room.

Those appear to be nice cases. If I had them, not sure what I'd end up using them for. They look like a safe way to store or ship a watch though!

Bilsey- that's a lot of big drill bits for cheap there.

Saw a sign for another sale as I was driving around. Sign said 'tools'. Apparently, all the tools had sold. He had a really large printiss vise. I mean really large, as in, even if he had been willing to sell it to me did I know anybody with a forklift-large. With an attached steel table.

But it was not for sale. I was hoping I could rescue it from rusting away sitting outside in Oregon.

Nearly a dozen sales and a flea market yielded this lot. Plus two chimney brushes, a range hood, and a box of assorted electrical items not pictured. My GF bought a coffee table and a large mirror, also no pics.

The drill index is a all metal Hout, screwdrivers are snap on, Herbrand, and Vaco. Bonney DBE and Utica pliers. Unidentifiable 3/8 extension and round shank USA DBE. Craftsman flex ratchet, Williams socket, and newer USA Vise-grip.

The boxes will maybe get Bolted to the golf cart as a small waterproof tool/glove box.
They're fifty bucks new and the plastic is slightly different but other than the feel they seem to be maybe even a bit better than my pelicans. They have a pressure release valve that will be needed anytime I close them up here and open them down there....
They're about 8x8x3 in size.

Maybe one under the hood of the truck as a kind of safe.

I actually feel a little guilty about this one because we sorta know the sellers family, but they didn't want to haggle. Bosch 1617 router, like new for under $20.

Today was a much better deal for me than yesterday. I got all these goodies for $25. The last $5 of those $25 was for a Brodhead Garrett 500 Y woodworking vise.

Not sure which is my favorite buy. The vise, the 41 Truss plates, the 4" Wilton vise copper soft jaws, the 5182 Walden 3/4" t handle breaker bar, the vintage welding goggles, the folding military table, the military stencil kit, the Craftsman drawer joint jig, or the cast iron craftsman tilting scroll saw I had to dig out from under the far back corner of this guy's woodshop.

Saw a box of worn out hole saws, misc steel pieces that look like they were used as seal installers, old bolts, etc. and spied a couple puller legs in the bottom and the words Snap On. Had to buy it as I was missing some puller legs for one I have.

Was pleasantly surprised to find what looks like to be a complete set.

Nice score! I have the same set, you are missing one of the threaded shaft inserts and two bolts. Two of those legs are extra, are they even Snap On?
