Finally had some good luck over the holiday weekend-

On Friday-
attachment.php

The Snap Ring Pliers are Craftsman, the Torque Wrench is Snap-On.

On Monday-
attachment.php

The Mini Mag Lite is LED and shows no signs of battery leakage.

I found that same SK set last month.
Nice finds on a holiday weekend.

Hey, fellow New England Pickers! We're having a meetup at my place in Westford, MA on 17 June from noon to 4 PM. Here's the thread over in Free Parking with the details, and here are nine reasons to make the drive:

For those of you wondering about making a long drive to Westford, MA for this meet up, here are nine reasons, off the top of my head:

1. The Boston area is a target rich environment for yard and estate sales. You will definitely find some great deals and steals around here.

2. The Meet-up will feature a swap-meet, so bring your junk and swap it for another man's treasure.

3. You'll get a chance to put faces to the avatars and nicknames of the worthless vagrants...er...the fine gentlemen...who inhabit this great forum.

4. You'll get to check out BlueBomber's Working Museum of DBEs:

5. ...and my 1971 50-state license plate collection:
View media item 41103
6. ...or grab a cold soda from my 1948 Coldspot fridge:
View media item 44458
7. ...or even question my sanity after observing my next project car:

8. Enjoy a burger or a brat, along with everyone else's pot luck dish.

9. Show your significant other (if you have one) that the people you talk to on Garage Journal are real and actually really nice.

So, shoot a PM to me or Bobcat753 if you are interested.

I went to buy this half horsepower snap on Bluepoint grinder for $30. After talking for a bit, I found out he had a vise for sale and offered it to me for $20 so I took it. Nice, clean Parker 954.

Nice score on the grinder, fair price considering condition, but the Parker deal earns you a "you ****".

Looks like you and I have twins. Here is the Blue Point grinder I picked up a while back.

Very small but lucky haul at the Early Early Bird today..

20170531_094230_zps4hjjuhzl.jpg

The DUNLALP DBE ("V" forge mark on flip side) is for a buddy.

The V-Bock tie-down is the lucky find!

If you recall, I reported a couple weeks ago that I had found this L.S. Starrett No. 278 V-Block, without a clamp…

20170519_101615_resized_zpsr5rwr56i.jpg

I forgot all about it until I was pawing through a machinists’ box today, when I turned up the clamp, but no V-Block! (No, not the same guy, not even the same flea market.)

I just measured the block and compared it to the specs and illustration in one of the wartime manuals I use to collect against and it's spot-on. A pair of these went in a rear echelon fab shop as well as several special mobile Armored Force machine shops. I've never found one in the wild before. Now I need one more to complete the set.

I bought another machine tool. Crappy picture for now and it will be a few weeks before I pick it up due to work. Not Bridgeport quality but not too bad for the money. It is 2hp and reversing. Also has power traverse that needs reattached when I get it installed in the shop. I did some research and was able to buy it for a fair price including vise, collets and a few cutters. The seller, a retired machinist, hasn't used it for a couple of years since his stroke.

This past weekend I was only able to stop at a couple garage sales, but I stocked up on small doo-dads of a vintage nature there. Always things I can use or fidget with!

Cost was $10 for everything.

Also got this single barrel carb at a flea market - cost was $5. Not sure what it's original vehicle was meant to be, its last patent date put the carb at a 1941 as it's earliest possible use.

I just can't wait to finish the next job and get back to it. Then the learning starts. Too many years since I used a mill.

there's nothing wrong with that little mill, That's what I want.
I don't have Money or space for a Bridgeport.
Money and space. Same reason I bought it. And more than accurate enough for me. Actually more accurate than me.

Craptain: so how did you move the little mill or were you able to break it down and haul it off in pieces? looking forward to seeing what you make with it if you might want to start a thread.

Lug: great way to put some old quality tools back together!

BB: i know when you started your wrench collection you were just putting up nails to hold a few. now that you have more than a few did you alphabetize them or do you just keep adding a nail? hope you have fun at the get together.

ALL: i picked up another Vise and the owner was nice enough to throw in the little Reed pipe vise in the deal. the Rock Island 574 with the Birtman Electric Co. badge on it was in pretty decent shape for being about 80 years old. it has 4.5 inch wide jaws and weighs about 70 pounds. try buying a new vise with 4.5 inch jaws that weighs close to this.

hope you all have a great day/morning at the sales.

cheers

I mentioned in the post, I am working for next 3 weeks, on a ship. So the seller has agreed to keep it till I return. It can be broken down, but there's a plan to move it in one piece.

Craptain: sorry i read several more posts before replying. best of luck moving it and even though it's not a 3,000 pound Bridgeport i bet it weighs all of 500 pounds. have a safe trip and post a few of your sailing pictures on this GS thread if you have time cause i for one have never been in that part of the world yet.

cheers

That would be the perfect size for me in my garage! I think you made a good find, and even better getting some tooling with it!

I'll have to dig it out and look for marks.
Please do, and please let me know what you find, and if you don't mind, please measure the part of the clamp that would go inside the grooves on either side of the V block.

The reason I am asking is because I noticed that your clamp is taller and not exactly the same shape as mine. My clamp has no markings. Curious, I just did a little mini research deep dive on V blocks in vintage catalogs (1938 Starrett, 1948 Starrett, 1946 Lufkin, and 1938 Brown & Sharpe) and made an interesting discovery.

The V blocks with a 1" capacity (distance between the set-screw and V, or maximum diameter of rod that will fit in the V) that Starrett, Lufkin and B&S made in this era are virtually identical in design, shape, and dimensions (1-5/8" long by 1-1/4" high by 1-1/4" wide), with the same or at least very similar groove for the clamp. And believe it or not, the clamps in the catalogs look identical in style, shape, and dimensions as well. (Two of them either copied off the originator, or they all used the same fab shop.) Anyway, my point is I think the clamps may be interchangeable, which is a long way of saying my clamp may actually have originally belonged to a Lufkin or B&S pair of V blocks.

EDIT: I am not going to turn this into a machinists' accessories thread, but for a visual reference for my findings above, here are some vintage catalog scans...

Again, your clamp looks a little different (again, taller and no thickening where it clamps on to the V block), and may be newer, or possibly the same vintage but a different mfgr, so I am genuinely curious.

Thanks.

Lug: great way to put some old quality tools back together!
Thanks, Drives. As I alluded to in my comments above to Lefty, I'm actually not sure they go together by brand, but they are certainly a functional fit. I need the second V-block and clamp for a set!

Drove 30+ min out to a supposedly "huge" estate sale this morning... In hindsight I wish I stayed home and didn't end up wasting half a day...

Prices were kind of high, and while there were a few things I would have liked to get (like some hammer heads missing their handles) the guy pricing stuff just didn't really like to haggle... He gave you a price and it was take it or leave it.

Lots of random little bits from cars like 60's & 70's era... and when I say random, I *really* mean random... Nothing you would want to use, and nothing that would be collectable. Honestly a lot of it should have been collected in a scrap metal bin instead of just tossed in the corner like he did.

I did manage to find almost a full case of brake cleaner, 20oz cans for about $1 each. I realize they are chlorinated, but I just use them for cleaning off gunky **** like chainsaws and lawn mowers, I don't weld.

A little container with miscellaneous taps, drill bits, a few easy-outs, couple chisels, various jacobs chuck keys, Craftsman wood screw pilot bits (but missing the stop), few Craftsman wrenches, and a S-K Tools screwdriver.

Hit up about half a dozen other garage / "estate" sales on the way home and they all had nothing of interest or prices were crazy high.

Hopefully will have better luck tomorrow, there's a couple garage sales that look interesting and have some decent prices.

Letgo score of the night. First craftsman Flying V ratchet I've been able to find. It's a 1/2 in model. It definitely wasn't a tool box queen but it's in decent shape. Paid 10 bucks, not a screaming deal but fair. Now the search for a complete set intensifies.

Yesterday I saw an ad for some vintage tools with an old pump, drill press, and craftsman bandsaw. This pump in the ad really caught my eye as I figured I could turn it into a stand or table.

cc62e925c3923952f00b72cccb992c60.jpg

I looked at what else the seller had and saw a couple iPhones for $50.

She told me $75 for the pump(tool thingy, lol) and $50 each for the phones. I said if she could unlock the phones I might be interested but I thought she was asking $50 for both. She said she would try to unlock them tomorrow.

So fast forward to this morning.
First thing in the morning I stop at one of our work locations and got find a free wheeled cabinet base they were throwing out. Made out of thick mdf and really nice locking casters. Pictures later in this post.

So after a long day of work, I messaged her that I'll be there in an hour. Then on the way, I see some stuff on the side of the road that said free. Looked like a few decent pieces of wood so I turned around and stopped. Ended up grabbing these two 2x12s about 16" long. One is a 8/4 thickness. Perfect for a vise or small table.

53ae7333facee989bc69829503a320f1.jpg

Then there was an old workbench with this vise. I unscrewed the vise. I just needs a new handle.
84a2d589eed194c8090bb5a50bf071e0.jpg
I wish I had room in my truck so I could have grabbed the workbench top.
Then the lady that was cleaning out asked me what else I might be interested in and came out with a cool old ruler. That was all she had left for tools.
e6cde1a8ba4c043400daac970fb27ca6.jpg
8ddfd198cb1f0815a488c2a3667e2406.jpg

Then onto get the myer pump. I pull up in a Hilti truck and she said wow, I haven't seen one of those since my dad worked there 20 years ago. Small world. The lady takes me to the huge barn, which also had a 3/4 court basketball court. Upstairs was the pump. Heavy as hell. So I grabbed the free cart I had to wheel it to the stairs to slowly lift it down each step.

50842386dec37a4581b129ffea1f5f1d.jpg

While I'm grabbing the pump she asks if I wanted the drill press and bandsaw. She had no idea what they were. The drill press was a light duty champion and the bandsaw was the same craftsman bandsaw I already have so I said I didn't want to buy them. But I asked if I could just take the fence off the bandsaw and she said sure.
122ad0fbbf4eb66c3d4ba718ab2e03e9.jpg

Then after I finally got to the truck she asked if I wanted one phone that she was able to unlock. I said sure but let me see if I brought enough cash. I said no because I didn't have $125 but only $105. She says that's fine and we make the deal.

639467874e771907802c6d99a8c2cea3.jpg
I think it's an iPhone 5, 5s, or 5c.

I think I had a good day. One of the pieces of wood I grabbed fits perfectly on top of the pump to make it into a table or plant stand.
