I picked up a Snap-On Chest (Model # KR-56 and produced in mid 1950's) on Saturday at a yard sale.

Plenty of "non-original paint".

Decided to hand sand just enough to clean-up and show off the colors, rather than full restore. Pics 1 & 2.

At same sale as the Snap-On, was a 24 drawer pull out metal cabinet, so hand sanded it enough to blend with Snap-On. Pics 3 & 4.

Now, the reason for above, is that I want to see these two pieces together as seen in Pics 5 & 6.

Plan to keep.

Mike

Those look terrific together. Even though the pulls on the drawers aren't exactly the same, they are very similar (overhangs), and do match, aesthetically.

Private Lugnutz:

It's kind of like the "Billboard Sign" song, except with paint and over-spray.

Will need to put a table under them both to get to right working height, which I actually have minus the legs, but that may be a winter "to do" job!!!

Thks for your kind words.

Mike, nice matchup,

I would however recommend you add a sheet of 3/4" ply the same size as the lower box to spread he load to the outer edges, as I don't think the middle supports alone are up to the job...

Outlaw:

Good suggestion on spreading the weight.

Picked up these 3 items today while out and about. First HW Lambo Diablo, 2006 Viper, and a very nice Diamond adjustable wrench. $5. The HW were both in their original packs, but so beat up they weren't worth saving.

The Diablo is the first Hot Wheels I remember getting as a youth, so it has some memories.

KTMracer: That would look cool in a 70's garage (or any garage!)

Cool Lug! I think the 2 digit postal codes came out around 1943.

Thanks, bluebolt. You are correct on the postal codes. It was prompted by the fact that many mailmen were suddenly new and inexperienced. What makes it insufficient by itself for wartime collectors is the fact that it was used until 1954. In this case, it definitely helps interpret that "3-48" as a date.

It looks like none of this stuff was ever used. It was a hoarder house. Mostly made in China/Taiwan/India...

Standard Tool Co. made in USA, missing 5/32" and 3/16".

The Huot box is not the usual stamped Huot box that I usually see. The part the bits go through is machined.

The business reply mail postage paid card in each set of two Petersen pliers says September 1978. So they were probably made around then.

They were sold at Ace Hardware, original priced at $12.99. It looks like the guy paid $7.43, on sale, for each set. I paid $5 for each set. I think it was a pretty good deal.

I have zero regrets about my purchases today.

I did pretty well today for a total of $96
The craftsman professional stubby sets were $35 each, the Granberg break and mend was $10, the brand new Channel Locks were $5 and, I paid $3 apiece for the punch and the two Snap On screwdrivers.

Looking good everyone!

Ecotec- I think guys are quietly drooling over those Vise Grips in the box.

Part of Sunday's haul was this interesting Desmond Stephan vise, my first buy that morning.

A little extra piece of history than just being a cool vise.

It has a metal tag affixed that reads PROPERTY OF DEFENSE PLANT CORPORATION AN INSTRUMENTALITY OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT B.A.-D.P.C.

I had to do a little search on Defense Plant Corporation:

A federal agency and subsidiary of the U.S. government’s Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) that led to acquisition by the federal government of a dominant position in several large industries.

On August 22,1940, Congress chartered the Defense Plant Corporation (DPC) in anticipation of war hostilities and assigned it the task of expanding production capabilities for military equipment. Its charter permitted both the building and equipping of new facilities and the expansion of existing structures.

taken from: http://what-when-how.com/the-american-economy/defense-plant-corporation-dpc/

It appears there are a lot of items out there with this tag. Many have a Private company name on the tag as well, which I don't see here.

Thanks Jake, I thought it could be Columbian.

I just found a couple post vises online with a C in a triangle, with the triangle formed by the words The Columbian Hardware CO. CLEVELAND O..

I was more excited about the metric tap and die set. It is something that I have needed for a long time. I have been wanting to upgrade from my HF set, but I just could not pull the trigger. $20 for what looks to be an unused USA set made that an easy decision. I am going to give the HF set to my friend.

Wow DK that wrench is awesome, like a early leatherman tool for the entire ignition system.

Here is one I forgot to post but it is pretty cool so I thought I'd share.... It's a hand truck but there is a hand break that works amazing. at the 1/2 off day at the estate sale I couldn't pass it up. Plus it has some heavy duty wheels and tires and is very stout overall

a few of the decent tools I got from 2 old toolboxes I bought at the end of some recent sales. The boxes and tools (and the usual nuts, bolt, nails, drill bits, screws, garbage, etc) were very dirty and not at all sorted. That's probably what kept others away.

- not sure what vintage of the CMan ratchet. Need to read up here. Needs a little work. First vintage CMan ratchet for me.
- Snap-On DOE
- Proto adjustable
- small Diamond adjustable
- Irwin Marples 2" chisel that was abused a bit, but otherwise very clean.

also a used HF variable speed drill, that cleaned up pretty well. Will use for sanding and grinding. And a few CMan combo wrenches that will go towards my traveling tool set. All of this for $10 including a decent plastic mid sized tool box.
.

You scored a craftsman circle u ratchet made by plvmb! Not easy to find and worth decent money. Very nice find. You could flip that on eBay and easily cover your whole expense.

And now for something a little different. Stopped by the Habitat for Humanity store looking for my ususal tools/cabinets/etc stuff and stumbled across this. An old Disney short. It's called "A feather in his collar" and was made for the Community Chest (I had no idea it was a real thing outside of Monopoly). Anyway it's from 1946 and in pretty good shape. got it for $8. So in between looking for tools and such always a good idea to poke around in the more random stuff. Never know what you will find. here the link to the short on youtube

3bay,
That wartime Desmond Stephan vise is awesome. The data plate and the brass jaw covers really make it special. I am so jealous. It's one of five mfgrs we've been able to identify in period manuals or references. The others being Columbian, Morgan, Reed, and Prentiss. I'm on the road, but I'll post some photos you'll like tomorrow.

Lugz- Thanks! I'm curious to see what you're talking about.

Mike Paxton- Thanks! It's about time I contribute something with some historical info to go with it.

Dkroth Nice find on the Craftsman. That's one handle I don't think is available anymore.

Bretjull A most interesting hand truck. Never had the pleasure of using one like that with a brake myself.

Tellingthem- That's a nice little Disney treasure there. Thanks for sharing it. Never heard of Community Chest and had to look online. Is it the organization that went to businesses for cash?

My picks from a welding shop that's closing down.
A 1HP Block grinder, missing almost everything but runs good. Don't see these around much. Paid $ 30

A couple of vise grip like clamps, never seen before and at $ 2 a piece, worth trying.

CL find last night; the list for today's route is very short..:

I went to get some lanterns and fuel yesterday evening; I thought 2 of then were gas, and one propane, but only one was gas... A nice 222A Peak 1 back packers lantern, and they had been having a yard sale, and I also got this Plvmb body hammer. Its tiny! a 1422. Only 4" long and a 1" face...

attachment.php

The can of Blazo is pretty old. if you note the red in the chevron is near faded away... no bar code either...

Scored this beauty for $20, checked on fleabay, and a few chaps have some rusty a$$ versions posted asking north of $500, pretty chuffed about this grab, and can't believe the fellow was letting it go so cheap!
