Scored this beauty for $20
Great score!
Not up to full duty today, despite a bewildering (heavy rain at times) number of excellent garage sales in my area. Stopped at a couple, and managed this for $3:
Akro-Mills portable parts organizer, Atkins and Disston saws, old Craftsman 1/4dr socket (box only), 2 bitbrace drills, 2 Stanley screwdrivers, a leather punch, front screw-type hacksaw blade holder, die, and an unknown (to me) screwdriver-type thingy stamped Lehigh Portland Cement Co on one side and Lehigh Mortar Cement on the other. Is it just a screwdriver?

I passed on a 24" Diamond adjustable for $175 this morning at the flea market.
You did the right thing. A new Proto 24" can be had for just under $200. Used tools, even truck brands that are like new, should never cost more than 50% of new price.

Some nice old oil and gas cans. Never heard of Auto King before but back in this time period there were many brands out there. Great pick up.

Church rummage sales are usually about the worst when it comes to finding tools and guy stuff. I saw this Milwaukee case for $8 and was about to walk past it because 99% of the time they're just empty cases. I gave it a nudge and it was full.

It's a M12 portable bandsaw kit with charger, battery, owners manual and works great.

For those that have this tool, is it a "keeper" and what teeth count blade is best for general purpose use? TIA.

P1070713.jpg

All the painting supplies were in the free pile, the 3 sided alum. ruler was $2, Fluke 83V was $40 and a NOS CM Kromedge tap and die set was $20.

Appliance Dolly - $11

Not too bad for a fairly slow day. Some tools surfaced. The estate sale I got them from had a ton more, but I'm in cherry picking mode these days...

Proto up top, Indestro and Tru-Fit Lectrolite DBEs, another Diamally adjustable, a SO flex adapter, and three Long C Craftsman.

attachment.php

I also got 5 sanding belts, and just in time as I've used up what I had; and some NOS Infinity speakers. I have some hopes for these, as Infinity is not a bad brand. $25 at the Estate sale for all.

attachment.php

I picked up another smaller aluminum pot with a cover that i wil clean up for the camping gear. And some gun leather. I was hoping the clip holsters would fit the Ruger .22 clips, but not quite big enough... Holster is for Colt or S&W.

Did you want me to elaborate (several scans to post) on your Desmond Stephan with the D.P.C. data plate and the copper jaw caps here or in the Vises of GJ thread? Probably more appropriate and less side-tracking over there, but I didn't see you post it over there yet.

Sure, the vise thread would be a good place. I'll try to post it over there this week when time permits.

Banjo- Nice find! For some reason I really love the look of Hazet boxes. Maybe it's the fact I never see any in person. Would love to run across a trolley but who wouldn't.

Are you saying you bought that Milwaukee ports band for $8? OMG! That is a huge you ****!
If you do a lot of metal work and fabrication it's a keeper for sure. Or if you work maintenance somewhere.
Congrats on that find.

Some nice finds today, folks--especially the Hazet box!

Jakemac, Bobcat753 and I had tried to organize a Garage Journal meet-up this weekend at my place, but it seems the date just didn't work for nearly anyone else. We decided to postpone the meet-up and instead go group pick some nearby sales.

We took our Picker's Caravan to four sites in Tyngsboro, Groton and Harvard, Mass. All four had "Tools" is the ad, and I came away with a little something from each place.

First up was a moving sale for a former Marine, mechanic and jack-of-all-trades moving up to his camp house in New Hampshire. He had some pretty good stuff and was accepting offers on almost everything in the garage. It helped our cause that there were a pair of Spanish speakers trying to drive really hard bargains on his higher dollar items. I dropped in after he became frustrated with their super-lowball offers and got 15 Craftsmen DBE wrenches (metric and standard) for $30.

The second stop was a moving/estate sale. This one had a bit less but some good stuff marked low.

Husky 12" fiberglass step ladder: $83
1/4" chain load binder, made in China: $1
Starrett 467 thickness gauge (a little rusty): $1
Tesa dial test indicator, 0.0001" accuracy!: $10
Box of nail gun nails: $5

Third sale was a company-run estate sale, but good prices. This was the second day of a three day sale, I believe, and we wondered what we'd missed on the first day. Eight bucks for the lot below:

Handi Grommet Kit--haven't needed one of these yet, but now I have it if I do
Heat shrink tubing, two sizes
60-grit flap wheel, unused
Clipboard on a box, full of the PO's owner's manuals for everything from a Mantis digger to a Honda lawnmower

063de2a276ec03659a06ccf3975e9f95.jpg

Final sale was another moving sale. No tools to be found (may have already sold) but I found a spare roof rake for me and a clay pot for SWMBO for $5.

18047a44653162e762dd2f3bf65a8bf2.jpg

We headed back to my place afterward. I gave Jake and BC the grand tour and we grilled some burgers and just hung out for a bit. It was fun picking with like minded folks who you are teaming with! We passed finds among ourselves and shared knowledge about particular items with each other. Pretty cool.

There are line pins for laying masonry. You drive the pin into existing or previously laid work and wrap your line around it.

When I was looking at it, the guy said he is priced as such because it is collectible. While he is correct on it being collectible, it isn't $175 worth of collectible to me. :willy_nil

Had an excellent time with BlueBomber and JakeMac today. We went around in the morning to some sales and then went over to BlueBomber's for the Grand tour of his shop and property and then Mike prepared a nice lunch for us to enjoy! On to my finds for the morning -

First sale was an Ex Marine/ mechanic/everyting and I walked away with the following for $120 (First Pic)
1. Snap On Deep And Shallow 3/8" SAE Socket Sets, The 9/16 are craftsman on both.
2. Snap On Short SAE wrenches missing the one.
3. Snap On Flare Nut Wrenches
4. Blue Point 4 1/8" Axle Nut Socket:eyecrazy:
5. Snap On 3" extension and 3" Roloc adapter
6. A back up light/ bumper thing that goes in a receiver hitch( Not Pictured)

The next sale was a moving sale. I was able to get the Starrett 731, Eagle Oil can and Prince Loader valve for $20. The Starrett is too far gone in my books, batteries leaked and the board inside is covered. The Prince valve is brand new and will pay for everything I bought today and then some:D

After that we stopped at the second day of a three day estate sale and it looks like we missed out on some good stuff. I was able to get two nice pieces of 1/4" plate steel. Perfect for a project in the works. Also got a cool "Drill Press Oil" can. Total of $5 Not Pictured

We stopped at some other sales but I came away empty handed from those.

My wife scored me this Kennedy 1018 at a garage sale today for $12. I think I've passed my tool buying disease on to her. Now she finds herself looking for tools for me when she goes to sales lol.

A friend on Thurs called to let me know of a yard sale on Friday that would include old rusty tools from a two generation estate sale.

Got a nice mix of items on Friday, but lots of wire wheeling to get rust cleaned off.

What was a bit of a challenge was that one of the owners was the go to person in the area for fixing or being given items that were no longer usable in current condition. So, had to look especially close and even then, found I made mistakes.

Example, saw a nice old metal roller cabinet with swivel/wheels as seen in pic 1, but didn't notice till got home the repair on one leg as seen in pic 2. Ugh.

On other hand, saw a hand crank sheep shear that I knew was missing the flexible shaft/cutters portion to it. However, I liked it as can see it useful in other ways for bedside table or a light. Made by the Chicago Flexible Shaft Co and called a Stewart Clipper. Pic 3 is what I got after clean up, but Pic 4 is with the driver portion removed, to show other possible uses for it.

Old wooden barrel with metal hoops as seen in pic 5, while pic 6 shows one of the lids with name/location on it.

Pic 7 is upper portion of a hand crank wall drill by Champion Blower and Forge Co. Knew it was missing lower section, but upper portion had so many usable parts, that thought it would still be good for parts for someone fixing/restoring one of their own.

Posting just these items for now, but hoping to get to the rest tomorrow.

Mike

Some great stuff showing up this weekend.

Well it's taken me a while to get to it, but I guess it's my turn to show off my finds from my Caravan outing with Bluebomber and Bobcat753.

The first sale opened at 8am, so we planned on meeting there at 7:45 to get organized. However, someone cheated and got there early and jumped the gun on two of us. That's OK, he also ended up paying more than we did as penance. This was the best sale of the day, we ended up leaving some good things behind when we left. It wasn't easy to exercise restraint.

$15 -
opened box (33) of Peters 22cal standard charge shorts. (hard to find around here)
SnapOn SDD1 stubby screwdriver. Dark green w/duck logo (?????:wtf:?????)
Craftsman 9-4362 10pc 3/8dr crowsfoot set in pouch (w/extra 7/8")(-V-)

100_2517.jpg

After the sale, we got together to choose the next location to hit. What Bluebomber and Bobcat753 were too polite to mention was that we were choosing from a list of sales that I printed out. The next stop was a drive in the opposite direction from the others. When we got there, nothing. :headscrat After a bit of confusion, it was discovered that I'm an idiot. The sale wasn't for today, the listing clearly stated the sale is tomorrow. Too far for me to make the trip, but maybe one of the other guys can make it back out there.

So, the actual second stop was in the other direction, up a narrow paved path where we eventually parked, then a walk up a steep narrower driveway that served 3 houses, to the very top. This sale wasn't prolific, but it was surprisingly fruitful.

$10 -
GREENLEE
GT-11 voltage detector
GT-10 circuit polarity tester
14 Knockout punches 9/16"-2" dia. (some duplicated, 1 missing bolt)

100_2522.jpg

Third stop, second day of an estate sale. Not much left in the shop but the dregs. The leavings suggested that the owner had done a fair bit of tinkering, possibly some machining, but there were no tools or machines left to give any indication of what we might have missed.

$4 -
box of #10 SS pan head 1-1/2" sheet metal screws
heavy steel block (2-3/4"w x 3-3/4"L x 1-1/2"h)

100_2524.jpg

The last stop was at a garage/porch sale up another long steep driveway. My legs were burning by the time we got to the top, to find ...... Nada. Back down the hill.

The day ended at Bluebomber's place where we got a tour of his shop and ongoing projects, some great conversation, and a nice meal on the patio with a view of the garden. We even got to meet the cats, the dog, and SWMBO. All were very welcoming. A very good day out.

I was going to wait for you two but saw another early bird making a B line to the garage and said NO WAY was he getting the good stuff! :lol_hitti

Also the Snap On stubby you found is part of the Ducks Unlimited edition of certain Snap on tools. Snap On made a screwdriver set and I think some hard handle ratchets.

I knew that, but it's funnier the way I told it. :D

Thanks. I thought it would be something like that.

Scored this beauty for $20, checked on fleabay, and a few chaps have some rusty a$$ versions posted asking north of $500, pretty chuffed about this grab, and can't believe the fellow was letting it go so cheap!

Nice score, while some of those eBay prices are on crack, I bet you could get an easy 350 to 400.

I scored this torch setup this morning at someone doing their own estate sale for $10. I had to ask twice just to make sure I heard right. Works fine. Hoses are a little dry though. Old NCG gauges and welding & cutting torch, 4 tips for each. I don't need one, but a friend asked me a few weeks ago to keep an eye out. I rolled by his house on the way home. He thought I was joking when I said 10 bucks, it's yours. That is the cheapest I've ever bought a torch set.

Same set as mine. But I paid a lot more than $10. Might not be such a great deal if the tanks turn out to be rented. The outcome then depends on your LWS or wherever you get your gas.

Yep-- paid what I thougt was a good deal for a welding rig once, until I took the tank into the company stamped on the side. They thanked me for returning their tank to them. However, they also gave me a slight discount on the replacement tank I bought from them outright. So, not such a good deal.

Your score, however, is a steal even just accounting for the regulators, hoses and welding hardware--well done!

I think we've all done that... You swear you look over an item at a sale, but when you get home there is something wrong with it staring you in the face that you swear wasn't there before...

Ugh.

... No clue on the tool with the chain attached,

The thing with a chain is a chain drill. Used with a brace to draw the drill into the pipe (or whatever) being drilled.

Disston D-8 but think blade has been shortened, as less than 20 inches long...wood Disston handle

Disston advertised D8 panel saws like yours (a hand saw would have an additional nut) in even-inch lengths down to 16", so 20" is probably original. If you can get the etch to show, it should be about centered along the blade. The handle is apple wood.
The other Disston handle looks to be a No7, Disston's oldest, longest running, and conservative design, hardly different from the traditional English pattern. If so, the wood is American beech, the grain of which can be darkened (if you like that sort of look) very dramatically with a little BLO followed (after it cures) by a few coates of clear shellac.
Both can be dated to within a few years by the medallions.
