Posting the last of the pics from sale on Friday. (Part 1 of 2)

Pic 1--Mostly Williams brand spud/bridge wrenches. However, 2 of them had just a logo of a shield with what looks like an H on the shield.

Pic 2--Assortment of bits, brace and some accessories

Pic 3--Froe, Pair of Saw Sharpening Vises with a Littlestown No. 52 pipe vise, Stanley # 220 block plane. Last item at bottom is a Boring Machine Joist Drill Patent Oct 20 1896 by Elliott E Anthony of Detroit Michigan.

Pic 4--Pair of Gambrels, nipper, wrench and type of pliers. Last item looks like a tool for making musket balls.

Pic 5 & 6--No clue on these, so took two pics in hopes someone might know what any of these items were used for.

Pic 7--Type of pliers, Saw Set Mfg Unk, Pair of fire wood carriers made by Roy Losh around 1990, Trimo small 10 inch pipe wrench, type of pliers by Whitaker Pat 19027, Hawkeye Wrench, Lid Opener, hand vise, small grease gun, wedge, hook, pair of corn shuckers with one being The Boss, 4 step pulley, small animal bell, ash puller and 3 handles.

#4, the DBE wrench is a combination spark plug and cylinder head nut wrench for late model flathead Ford V8s. Should be 13/16 X 11/16. Pliers are battery terminal nut pliers.

#5-6, the crooked hook looking tool is for removing retainer clips from flathead Ford valve guides.

Mike. I suspect the double hook and spike in pic 5 is a home brewed thing for hanging lanterns from; sort of a double shepherds hook? It could be driven into a tall stump of a small tree, or into a heavy branch?

Closer pics on some of those things?

The thing with a chain is a chain drill. Used with a brace to draw the drill into the pipe (or whatever) being drilled.

Disston advertised D8 panel saws like yours (a hand saw would have an additional nut) in even-inch lengths down to 16", so 20" is probably original. If you can get the etch to show, it should be about centered along the blade. The handle is apple wood.
The other Disston handle looks to be a No7, Disston's oldest, longest running, and conservative design, hardly different from the traditional English pattern. If so, the wood is American beech, the grain of which can be darkened (if you like that sort of look) very dramatically with a little BLO followed (after it cures) by a few coates of clear shellac.
Both can be dated to within a few years by the medallions.

Shot some new pics of the double hook with spike with a wood ruler in background for scale.

When I first saw it, wondered if it might be a double fishing pole rest, but I also think your idea of hanging lanterns could be what it actually is used for.

I think along these lines also, only it had a handle to hold it with so you wouldn't hit your hand, or maybe that was for two man operations and not trusting the hammer wielder to not hit your hand... I've seen similar for chisels, for blacksmith work.

Mike, on the tongs, I think I agree its a bullet mold. Is the inside pocket round?

Went out to a couple yesterday and at one I "Asked the Question" (Lanterns) since they had a prop stove out...

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

I went there because they had a lot of promising pics of tool boxes and such (as well as a pic of the prop stove), even though it was further out than I usually go... I walked into some lowballer re-seller trying to screw them down on this MATCO stack; Excuse? The bottom was locked. They wanted $500 for all including the tools inside, he only wanted to give half... Even with friction slides its worth well north of asking price - without the tools!... I hate these guys especially when they present themselves as the "expert witness" in their own cause...

I was looking through the top while all this is going on and once I figured out who's who. (things kept getting translated to Spanish for the old lady selling this stuff off. obviously her husband's and probably deceased...)

So I offered to pick the lock.. I first rounded up pliers a cotter key, and I needed a heavy paper clip for the "saw" wire... While they were looking for a paper clip, I bent the tip of the cotter pin into a hook. No paper clips.. I was handed a hair pin. OK, maybe... maybe not as it broke the first attempt to bend it sharper...

I actually provably had it picked right off, and at least a half dozen times after, as I could get it to turn maybe ten degrees, but then it stopped. Then I notice I can hear the tumbler pins dropping back as I backed off... So I set it up again and got a screw driver and turned it. CLICK!. I tug on a drawer and its open! They were both surprised and very happy. The re-seller was long gone, and I took my time looking for tools I wanted, but not a lot there that I was interested in. I did tell them the prior "buyer" was a re-seller, and it was worth more than he was asking. and with it now unlocked, I joked that I had probably doubled the value!

I looked elsewhere and saw the stove and asked the question:

And they got the old woman and asked her: The stove was on top of a tarp covered pile, and she went over there and chattered away and pointed so they looked under it, and pulled out a very dusty 228H.

Green doesn't usually interest me unless single mantle, but I do like the 228 for its wide brim.


I'm looking it over and debating asking for a price, and the translator come over and tells me its mine for free for unlocking the chest! Can't beat free! Even SWMBO, who has some misgivings about my new collecting of lanterns was cool with a free one!

So here is is "Barn" (tarp) fresh!

The crud on the vent was something burned on.. scraped right off... the pump works fine, the fuel inside is clear white gas! with mantles it should fire right up! (later this evening for money shots it was too HOT outside Yesterday...)

And wiped with a damp paper towel, and the globe cleaned with Windex:

The worst of the damage is the label and some bottom edge rim rash:

Decided to stop by the sale in Tyngsboro on my way to work yesterday. Got there at 11 and was amazed at what was still there! I wonder what I had missed. There was a Craftsman crowntop radial arm saw with the original cabinet, a craftsman table saw with the original cast iron H stand, and tons of other good stuff left. I managed not to spend what was left in my wallet and walked away with the following for $43.

1. Craftsman 1/2" Pear Head Ratchet, Craftsman Vise Grips, Channellock Mini Pliers
2. Snap On A91B Strap Wrench Socket with original belt
3. Unique looking clamp on Blacksmith vise, no makers marks, quite small too
4. Perfect condition Kennedy 526 Machinist Chest, no key

On the hammer, it's almost like you hit the hammer head and drive the other end for a gouge cut. Suppose you could do it as a one person, but probably easier if done with two people. Kind of an odd duck and no markings of any kind.

The seller stated: "Nearly brand new 3/4 HP Craftsman Bench Grinder. Pretty sure it's only been used one or twice."

I spoke to the owner's wife. She said her husband came down with Parkinson's a few years after purchasing it new and never really used it. She seemed to think it was only 20 years old but I didn't have the heart to tell her it was probably 35 years old (or older). No sense in offending the seller when she's giving a good deal!

It came with the original owner's manual and two NIB grinding stones.

Paid $100.

I spoke to the owner's wife. She said her husband came down with Parkinson's a few years after purchasing it new and never really used it. She seemed to think it was only 20 years old but I didn't have the heart to tell her it was probably 35 years old (or older). No sense in offending the seller when she's giving a good deal!

It came with the original owner's manual and two NIB grinding stones.

Paid $100.

Nice find, hopefully you can put it to good use! I would pay $100 in a heartbeat for that too!

Can't beat free is right. Nice job on unlocking that tool box for them too. I would have gladly paid 500$ for that (if I needed it), tools or not, love the look of those boxes!

Very rare monday sale for me, actually a Saturday sale that got rained out and the sellers had an event to attend yesterday.

35$ got me a 5' step ladder (25$) and this pile for an additional 10$. A bit high, but I've been to this place a few times and it keeps on giving, and I'm sure there will be more.

Bunch of random screws and lag bolts (all organized though, so that's nice)
Made in Canada oiler with no brand on it
Mac Tools flat head screwdriver
8" Ridgid pipe wrench

Went to get the stepladder because the ad mentionned several of them. I do have a nice 7' combination extension ladder/stepladder but it's too tall to be convenient inside the garage or the house, problem solved.

Are they amber because they are ancient? Were they originally clear?

I've got some clear handles circa 1982 and they are starting to turn.

I picked up this one last week. The shaft is stamped Pat. 2046840, which is an original Phillips patent issued on July 7, 1936. This Craftsman "clear" handle is 60 - 80 years old.

That Matco orange hard handle set is interesting. Any idea of the OEM? Possibly Witte?

Ok ill say it can be a Proto. Seems to me the pebble field ones are a more likely candidate for lawsuit. Never know if they tried a style and went back though. I have a pebble field proto that is a dead match fot this except plain steel.

It is for sure a newer proto and is not a lawsuit wrench... I have several newer protos with the chevrons... I think that wrench is from the 80's but for sure is not a lawsuit wrench. I have a few proto l.a. Wrenches that have the brand ground off . They were factory seconds they sold to employees so maybe that is what happened here ?

Had a productive weekend at the fleas and garage sales!

1 - lot of Craftsman stuff: long-C breaker bar, 1/4-drive ratchet, set of 9 vintage number stamps in a wooden box (not sure if the box is originally Craftsman), 2 DOE wrenches, a 1/2-drive extension, and a total of 21 sockets from 1/4-drive to 1/2-drive, $8 for all

2 - set of mostly Proto, including a 3/8-drive set of 2 ratchets, a speeder bar, a breaker bar, and 24 sockets (mostly Proto, with a few Snap-On and Husky tossed in), $25 for the set

3 - more Proto stuff: set of 4 screwdrivers, a pair of 6-inch wire cutter, tape measure, 1/2-inch drive extension, a center punch, a combo wrench, a 1/4-drive ratchet, and 3 sockets (1 Proto and 2 Plomb), $10 for all

4 - 2 Klein pliers (a small needle nose and a 9-inch lineman's pliers), 3 screwdrivers (Amelite, WWII Stanley and Irwin), red Defiance razor knife no. 299, Westcott 10-inch curved adjustable wrench, a lathe lockdown wrench, a 6-inch Diamond adjustable, and a female-drive Frank Mossberg ratchet, all for $10

5 - misc socket stuff incl. a S-K Wayne 3/8-drive ratchet, a 100-yr-old socket for removing spark plugs (missing the thru-bar), and 17 misc sockets (incl. Blackhawk, OTC, Herbrand, Indestro, and Wright), all for $5

6 - cute little S-K set of 1/4-drive stuff, incl. a ratchet, socket extension, breaker bar, and 10 sockets (might be missing one or two), probably late 40s or 50s vintage, $8 for the set.

A bunch of power tools, there is this Cman 3x21 aluminum belt sander that wasnt pictured since its already on the healing bench and a Milwaukee Aluminum Hole Hawg in there, I got $20 for the whole lot. They all run too.

I also got this exhaust blower, I always use them for personal dust collection - $3

I agree it's not a "lawsuit" wrench but I am curious about the exact years those chevron wrenches were made. I have a few misc combo wrenches with chevrons that have me curious.

Lately, I have made some good scores at the Habitat for Humanity Restore. I have posted some, but here is a summary, clockwise from top:

Challenger 1-1/8 combination
Craftsman WF screwdriver and T45 Torx
Proto 11/16 combination
Bluebird #11 Battery Post Pliers
Bluebird #25 Battery Pliers
Co-Axial dial indicator (China)
Williams 1-1/16 engineers wrench
Wardmaster 11/16 combination
Duro Chrome 1/2 thin combination
5 stamped wrenches, including 1/2 x 9/16 DOE and a spray gun wrench

The total for all these was $6.00. All of the wrenches except the Proto were taped together as one price, marked $2.00. The Bluebirds were bought on different days, and were marked $1.00.

The dial indicator was marked $2.00. I think it had been dropped and the gear train inside was stuck. I dismantled the shaft, which allowed me to remove the indicator from the housing. I then removed the back of the indicator and loosened the screws holding the jewelled gear train. By gently nudging the gears, I got them moving again, and after reassembling everything, the indicator zeroed out properly and moves full travel. The sensing arm was rusted into the lever mechanism, but I soaked it in Kroil for a couple of days and it came loose. Now I have an indicator that I can use to locate my mill or drill press over a hole! One like this is at least $70.00 on Ebay.

The $6.00 was less than the marked prices because they gave me a discount at the register. Restore rocks!
