Who gives away a FREE motorcycle ?????? :wtf:

Anyway .....
Sale listings were poor for this weekend, in part due to rain. I still managed to get out there though. Three planned stops and a few TOO’s. I ended up spending $17 for the day at three of the stops.

Stop #1 was a planned YS. Not much there, but I managed to spend $6.
Hoppes 9 gun cleaning kit
unmarked 15” screw jack (gummed up with hard grease)

100_2525.jpg

Stop #2 was a TOO YS. No tools, was told that the prices were negotiable, but when asked, the starting prices were sky high. Nope, sorry, not playing your game today.

Stop #3 was another planned YS. At this point the clouds were getting ready to spritz, so the seller was ready to deal. I spent $10 here on two items.
Craftsman (USA) 506.51801 3-1/2” vise. (rusty, but fixable. Originally marked $15)
21/32” pressed steel socket (unbranded. As far as I can tell, not Ray, Mossberg, or Hinsdale)

100_2526.jpg

Next was stop #4. A TOO estate sale. once again, no tools, but the basement had the benchwork for a G-scale train layout that had been removed. Too bad, I might have spent money there otherwise. Spent $1 on what I found on the benchwork.
4 - LGB R-1100 4’diam curved track pieces. (for the X-mas train)

100_2527.jpg

Stop #5 was a planned sale. I wasn’t expecting to buy anything, but really wanted to go drool. It was a closed down machine shop selling off the equipment. CNC, lathes, mills, etc.. The big stuff, not home hobby machines. No tools for sale, they’re taking those home, but they had some really nice toys for the big boys.

I got to see a small old Kennedy workbench (doors and shelves underneath). A guess on size would be about 33” tall with a wood top, 20” deep, and 40” long. Painted industrial gray. Once again, NFS.

Home by 10:30, raining buckets. (sorry, none are collectable)

Excellent finds!

Looking at CL lately, half the garage sale listings are on your side of the river. Even though I work in North Portland, I won't venture across the bridge out of fear of getting caught in a bridge lift or other traffic nightmares. Looks like you're doing pretty well!

Brian
Yes I've been to a few good ones lately but I'm mostly the same way I worked at the shipyard on Swan Island and it would take 1.5 hrs to go just 3 miles. At least for the most part the weekends are a little less hectic.

Not huge day, but enjoyable. the heat wave broke last night so even now at early afternoon its comfortable. Quite a few stops planned only 2 planned had pay dirt, one TOO also had some... All three were estate sales.

At the first stop I started just digging in a box full of "junk" and a minute into it was told "everything in that box is free!" My kind of sale. I immediately "lowered my standards" a bit and took the metal box I was rooting in and added a few things to it... I also grabbed a centering fixture for drilling. So after I got home I pulled everything in the box to one side and sort of rough sifted side to side and the things outside the box are keepers for "stock" and the rest gets recycled... Nothing really outstanding but a fair amount of useful stuff. The box I'll find a use for.

attachment.php

I then moved on; on the benches I got three tools - very old Channellock needlenose, A Proto/Plvmb" pebble wrench, adn an old wood handled driver. also pictured is the drill guide.

attachment.php

Also last up was a partial spool of VERY flexible 3/32 SS cable. The guy tells me "I have to tell you that cable is defective. When you cut it, it unravels..." :wtf::headscrat:spit: "OK..." I guess they were never told you have to wrap cable in tape andTHEN cut it! :dunno:

Edit on the SS cable length: I rewound part of the spool so I could get an accurate count on the winds and a better measurement for circumference: 165 ft +-! Not bad!

Three bucks for everything...

attachment.php

The TOO Estate was another dig through boxes... Almost everything fit in the Revere Ware measuring cup I grabbed first... The M cup, a Ford wrench, a silver plate bell (polished up beautifully), A mini hand held vise, bits and pieces of tools, the little wrench has a "B" in a circle (Bonny? Billings?), the centering head had no hardware, then I found the lock pin, which is the hard part..., the split mental disk is for holding a tap in a die holder... I think it has a 30 some thing patent date adn is Greenfield. The bolt has a thread for wood on one end, so could be useful... The protractor is from the Eagle pencil co. and the "V" gauge is for measuring wire gauge...(old and new style sizes listed...)

Two bucks!

attachment.php

And a closeup of the Mini Vise. only 1/4" jaws! A couple of things here will land in the Tiny Tools Thread...

attachment.php

Last productive stop was the last Estate Sale. I just missed getting new in the package tarps I could have used... but I did get this orange canvas "tarp"... Un rolling it at home I finally figured out its either a pup style tent, or a canopy; you tie a center rope that is already threaded through the center to something and stretch it and tie off the edges, or you could use poles for the same... 7-1/2 ft in both directions...

attachment.php

And some brass grommets and three hole punches.

attachment.php

Eight bucks all.

Paid $20 for these 3 items from a huge estate sale with a 2 barns full of tools. I stopped by yesterday and saw these. I wasn't in love with them so figured I would go this morning and try for a deal if they were still there. The broken 3.5" Parker and small incomplete Emmert patternmakers vises were gone, but I have no room , need, or want for broken vises.

Starts with this craftsman 4-3/8" jointer. No stand or motor. The seller says $20. I said "ehhhh I don't know." He immediately drops to $10 and I took it.

Then I asked about price on the bench grinder in the barn. He said bring it out. So I bring out this 6" black&decker junior bench grinder. I really just wanted the shields.

And I brought out this cart with nice steel wheels. The cart is just wood and cracked but the wheels spin so nicely. I can use these for one of my tool stands.

I say "how about $20 for these and the jointer?" He says " $20 for all that? ". I said "yeah." He says "ok take it."

So I've been hunting and buying tools this spring...not at the pace I did in previous seasons (less available time now), but still quite a bit. But I haven't been taking the time to photo, crop, save, and write out copy to post here. During a recent short vacation trip to Massachusetts I hit some sales, and made up my mind to share some photos here.

So here goes!

I stopped in at one of those "antique malls," (I usually avoid those. But this one is small; located in an old wooden house, with only a few dealer booths. I've done well here before.) Anyway, the first thing I found was an edge-turning sheet metal tool. I used those a lot when I was a journeyman tinner decades ago. This one was complete with all parts including good dies, and turned smoothly. TAG PRICE: $25. But the booth had a "20% off today" sign, and I got it for $20. Very happy.

Next items I found in that "mall" were Milwaukee brand Sawzall blades. They are metal cutting blades; the small ones made for making sharp turns, etc. Packaged in groups of 20 blades each, some were 18 teeth, others were 24 teeth. But since they were only $2 per pack, I of course took them all. That's just 10 cents each. Best price I ever paid for Milwaukee brand Sawzall blades of any type! (You can see the $2 price tag in the close-up view.)

Next item in that mall was an old nutcracker someone has made, with the crusher/handle shaped as a mallard head (Go ahead and laugh now!) My grandkids and I like to sit around and crack open nuts and eat them, and I thought this might be fun to have around. PRICE: $5.

Then I found an older-looking speedo from a Yamaha motorcycle. I fool around a lot with swapping/selling old car parts, so I picked this one up. Pretty good shape, but when I saw the price tag, I just went for it. PRICE: $1. I figure it's GOT to be worth more than that. Might give me something to trade with.

The only other items I bought there were some old fishing lures, and one good USA-made Wizard brand 4-way lug wrench. It is just about the perfect size, heavily made, and plated. I love these things, and like to keep them everywhere I have vehicles with tires and wheels. This one cost me $2 (I'll leave the lures off of this thread, since they are not "tools," or garage related.)

After the "mall," we travelled to an estate sale, before going to a flea mkt about 10 miles away.
At the estate sale, things had been picked over, but the sellers were still digging out stuff, and the rain was keeping away shoppers. So they were making very aggressive prices. I love when that happens!

First item I looked at was this old band saw. The removable side is plastic, the table is cast aluminum. Label shows ValueCraft of Springfield, Mass. But it's definitely Asian-made. It looked nice, considering, and when the seller saw me looking at it he said, "It runs great. Let me plug it in and show you."

I asked for the price first, so we wouldn't both waste our time. He replied that it was marked with green tag.

I thought, "Yeah, right!" But when he walked over and looked he said that $3 was indeed the price!

He plugged in it, and smiled proudly at me when the motor fired right up. But I pointed out that only the motor was running. We pulled the side off, and found that the drive belt was missing.

He stepped back and smiled and said, "So it is, so it is. Ok then, it's YOURS. Just take it. For free!" I loaded it in my truck, before he might change his mind.

1/3 hp motor is Taiwan made.

Here is the brand-name tag:

Each of the pulleys have some kind of rubber ring around them, apparently to cushion the blade (for noise-reduction, maybe?). The rubber ring was broken and falling off of one pulley. I wonder if I'll be able to find replacements?

Believe it or not, this band saw seems to claim to be able to be used for metal or wood. Doesn't seem stout enough to cut much in the way of metal. What do you guys think?

I'm wondering if these two pulleys line up closely enough? It seems like only one belt would run straight. Would the others be able to survive at so sharp an angle, do you think?

I realize it is not a high quality unit. But the price was right! It would be so cool if it turned out to be "good enough" for light work around my home shop. :)

Lump, you can simply take similar thickness of rubber, cut a strip and glue it on. I did that with a cutoff saw and it was still holding 30 years later when I sold it... I used 3M's yellow gasket cement. (8003? 3003? :dunno: )

Cutting Metal: sure, LIGHT metals. soft metals... Heavy steel will be a chore.

Lures: Post em up! I post just about everything! Its fun!

Haven't been able to go our hitting the dirt sales lately, but made up for it today. Went to the Branch 15 swap, which was apparently a little slow due to the heat, 103, but still good. First, I did a little swapping with SmokeShow:

Then, at the show picked up the following:

Snap On sockets, General drive pin punches, Proto LA 3/4 t-bar, Snap On bit driver, Armstrong 9/16 hex bit, a weird Japanese rat that looks like an Armstrong kit will fit, a small Yankee bit chuck and drill bits and this for $40:

Atlas cross slide vise.
Then went to the local restore, picked up the following:

Proto and Craftsman metric sockets, Snap On Whitworth, Apex socket, Yankee bit, a weird multi wrench, Crafty -V- extension, Proto 5mm allen bit missing the ball, screw starter, an old C clamp and a Square D pressure switch. All for $4. Not too bad.

I second what Outlaw said. By all means post the lures Lump. Let's see it all!

Why do I have the feeling someone goofed on labeling those saw blades? :wtf: Were they supposed to be $2 each? Heck of a deal there.

Btw, I have the same Wizard wrench

Me and my daughter went to a estate sale this morning and I think we did good. A Disston no 4 back saw, a Craftsman planer still in the box(looks lightly used), small palm Stanley planer, devilbiss paintgun and a blowgun in the box unused, Craftsman wood chisel all good shape, toggle clamps, and a table lamp I have yet to plug in to see if it works. Gave $30 for it all and my daughter got a Minnie mouse mermaid for a $1. I also got a f150 power wheel free from the side of the road , I'll need to get a battery and test it out, and a tricycle for my daughter for $5.

BMW: Nice scores! Esp the X-Y table WITH Jaws!

That odd clamp: Note the square hole will take a carriage bolt. Add a wing nut and possibly an adapter for an umbrella or a light...

Excellent finds guys... I can't believe someone was giving away a perfectly good motorcycle... Only in California...

I didn't go to any sales today... Only one looked semi-promising and it was too far and I didn't want to waste the morning since the weather was so nice and cool so I got some things done around the house.

I only had a little cash on me for yard sales and do my best not to withdraw any more. Today was a real test. I found a yard sale listed that mentioned Snap On Snap On Snap On. He was only having it today, and he started an hour before everybody else. So I went there first. I honestly expected full blown retail prices on everything so when I saw the prices I spent most of the money I brought. Unfortunately the Snap on tools he had advertised was a complete toolbox full of Snap On tools for $5k and he didn't want to break it up. Oh well I got a lot of good stuff anyway.

Everything in the picture cost me $35 combined.

By the way, can anybody tell me what model this air ratchet is, It is missing a piece that I would like to try to replace. Or if it is sold under a different make also that I could buy parts cheaper that would be great.

DT Man, does the crank on that hand drill actually clear your left in use? :headscrat

It is pretty cool!

Yes, with my meaty left hand on the handle, the crank handle clears my hand with about an inch to spare. I plan to clean it up and restore it as best I can, as well as continue the search for the original maker. Will post info as I receive it, so far the internet hasn't been much help in the way of more pics or info, I believe it's a fairly rare piece.

Ok, guys. Here are the fishing lures. Just remember, you asked for them!

First up is a #325 series Heddon Sonic Ultra (top one, which is a very small size lure), which was made from 1957 to 1982, and below that is a Heddon Tiny Runt #350 series. It features gold colored eyes, which I believe were replaced by cream-colored eyes in 1961. So both of these lures are the right brand name, popular models, old enough for many collectors, and in good shape. I paid $2 each, except they ended up getting folded into a package deal, and probably actually cost a bit less than that.

Next is an unknown lure. I paid $4 for this one, gambling on finding out what make and model it is. The vintage looks like the 1960’s, but we shall see. I think it will fit in nicely with the assortment of lures which I carry with me to the rare local flea markets whenever I set up a booth.

Finally this tiny lure is also unknown. Can’t wait to look it up and see what it is. It was worth a buck to find out. Some of these smaller lures can be pretty popular. Others…a waste of time and money. LOL

The little red n white lure above will clean up nicely. It takes patience, and careful application of very fine metal polish on the paint, hook, and chrome lips. But I won't bother with that until when-and-if I find out it is worth the time and effort.

The last things I bought at that Massachusetts estate sale were several galvanized steel hole-punched angle stock. I want to build a rack (table?) to get my parts-storage trays up off the floor, and these will be perfect. The seller had quite a lot of these, and I agreed to buy 6 of them at $1 each. (They are 1” by 2.25” by 8 feet long.)

By now this seller and I had agreed on lots of items and prices, and so when he began helping me load my truck, he kept going after we reached 6 pieces. When I pointed that out, he just winked and said, “Keep loading, at least until this one pile is gone!” He was indeed a nice guy.

On the way to the flea mkt we stopped at a yard sale, and there I found two 8 foot lengths of aluminum angle stock, 1.25" x 1.25" for $10. Not a steal, I'm sure, but well worth it. I love using aluminum in enclosed trailers, etc, where weight matters. And I have 5 enclosed trailers.

After the yard sale, we finally headed to the flea mkt. I LOVE markets, sales, and junk shops in New England. There just seems to be so much cool stuff to be found...everywhere I look! :bounce: I'll post more from this same trip in a bit.

The little flea mkt we were headed to is a small one, and we were running late…mid afternoon on a Sunday. So my expectations weren’t high. First several vendors were a waste, and then I saw a guy with tools, equipment, and hardware. I scored a couple items there…one which will appeal to our loyal yard sale pal, Jeff Moss.

Yep, it’s a cool older wrench, painted to protect it from rust. When I flipped it over and saw the brand, I knew Jeff was gonna want it. I’ve been holding a couple of Klein tools, an old padlock, and some locksmith stuff for him for a while. So now let’s see if he is watching this thread…

That same seller had a couple of PLOMB tools. I bought this ratchet and universal joint within a package deal, which inlcuded the BELL SYSTEM wrench, some Cman sockets, some Snap On metric sockets, and some Mac metric sockets. Not sure exactly what it cost me, but I know it was less than the $3 asking price.

The Craftsman 3/8 drive SAE sockets were scattered in his booth, and priced at $3 each. I put them all together, and found that this virtually unused set goes from 3/8" up to 3/4", with only the 1/2" unit missing. I pointed this out to the seller.

By now he had noticed that I had several tools set aside, and he wanted me to buy as much as possible. So next I gathered up all the Snap On and Mac metric sockets I could find in his booth, plus 4 deep well chrome plated metric Cman sockets, shown in photo with the u-joint socket set.

The MAC brand sockets appeared totally unused. And I know I could use that 32 mm socket in my own box.

The package price was $25. I was very satisfied.

There is a lot more to show, but I've got to drive overnight tomorrow to visit a client in Georgia on Monday. I'll post more sometime next week. Good hunting, all.

Quick summation. Did ORC and Smokeshow clean house or is it still worth my time to go tomorrow? My other plans fell through so am thinking about going to Brooks ...

Well done, Lump -- where in Massachusetts did your travels take you ?

Hello, Gidge. I have family members living in Palmer and Ware, etc. I find that in New England there are more auto repair shops which are still in business after 75 to 100 years, whereas here in Ohio, we mostly have only shops which are parts of chains, etc.
