My GF and I hit an estate sale last weekend and picked up a few goodies. I got the stove for $5 and she got the blue Sears lantern for $10. They are both 1967 dates and minty. There was a guy in front of us who grabbed the Sears then put it down after saying its a Sears POS. She got to the lantern next and good for her as I taught her old Sears stuff is usually good to go.
Yes she got the better of the 2.

Love that Sears lantern!

:spit:

Not sure if that one was made by Coleman, but a lot of Sears lanterns and stoves were, and all were good quality with the possible exception of the later thermos based stuff.

Great scores on those two! I'd have bought both!

and you'd be right about that! I have one that is very similar that I got free from an apartment cleanout that I use to display tools.

They can be fairly valuable so I haven't quite found a way to light the inside without drilling holes. Still working on that. As was mentioned, each shelf is a separate unit, so I think that if I can find thin enough wire for the 12volts, I may just put an led strip n each shelf and tease the wires out the back. It's against a wall so nobody will see.

I actually have about 4 display cabinets full of tools in my front room. I just had the grandkids in from Japan for the last 4 weeks, so it got converted to an extra play room, but once I get things sorted out to some extent, i will take pictures.

Small LED light pucks. Use lithium batteries to avoid leakage...

dngrmse, GREAT score on the bookcase!

, an old sectional "Barrister" bookcase with wavy glass pre-1930s that was curbside 2 blocks from my house. It was thrown all haphazard by the street, a miracle all the glass is intact. I even rung the bell to make sure they were actually throwing it out. Cleaned it up some, it's in really nice shape.

Wavy glass and the bottom/top and nothing broke Wow.

1973 speedaire 1Z721. 2stage 3hp 220v 80 gal @ 175#wp.
complete but has been off-line for a couple years. installed new fittings, wire & belts. next step is cleanup, install on base & feet, finish drain valve, source wiring and test run-up - in 20psi increments. if all goes well it'll be a welcome replacement to the '71 craftsman 20 gal portable.

love vintage stuff like the box - esp in such condition. best thing about the compressor deal was that purchase was financed by spotting other items at estate & yard sales and "trading up."

That makes that compressor deal even better. My problem with financing other buys with previous purchases is getting rid of anything. If I think it is cool generally it is with me for the long haul.

As for the cast iron piece I'm thinking the outer frame from a older block and pulley?

Went to one estate sale today near by... Back was hurting so I just wasn't in the mood to run around town today.

Spend a whopping $1.55 but got several bottles of bug killer, a couple 1-gal gas cans, some naval jelly, and a couple other little things. Everything was priced super cheap, just not really anything in the garage (no tools except for a Chinese socket set).

Yesterday was a little more productive, browsing CraigsList and saw this little mower posted only 16 minutes earlier, for $150... Called and I was first so I headed over to the other side of town.

It's a ~7yr old Craftsman (Snapper) mower. Hardly any rust, very well taken care of. Guy said it ran last year but this year it would crank but just not start. He said he replaced the carb and also the head, but wasn't "mechanically inclined" so eventually just gave up and bought a new mower. Didn't have a battery and the one he had that he used on his boat was just about dead and not enough to do squat.

Everything was so clean and like-new... Most mowers you see for cheap have rusted out decks, dry-rotted tires, and just general pieces of junk. Talked him down to $120 and away we went...

I just use a push mower to do my yard, it's not that big. This is kind of more of just a toy / luxury. I might mow my yard a few times with it, but I will probably end up re-selling it once I get it running.

Not from a garage sale but a dented box clearance at the local sears repair center. 33% off so $128 with tax. I was about to spend twice on a 10" sliding miter saw so it's a huge deal. Got it yesterday and just squared up the fence and it cuts beautifully.

Doesn't seem to be either?

That's a reference to the 1994 Billy Bob Thornton short film, or 1996 expansion, Slingblade. Maybe commenting that what you do with something is more important than its proper name, or even its original intended use.

Past couple of days have put in a lot of looking, but not much finding. Here's $12 worth:
2 Millers Falls screwdrivers, a Craftsman screw-holding screwdriver with the 1942 Priest (not the 1927 Velepec) patent#, an Xcellite nutdriver, eight solid brass drawer pulls, a Barcalo box tack tool, and eight turned ash hammer handles.
I've recontoured a large machinist handle into a softface handle. The hickory Blue Point handle surprised me by splintering when I gave it a twist, but I think this one will go into the Bonney head (that handle has checks in it).

Today I found an Indestro stubby screwdriver, but didn't purchase because the chrome had peeled off the lower half of the blade. If it was all on or all off I probabally would have bought it - I'd never seen (or at least noticed) one before.

Looks like a reproduction of a USA M-1943 intrenching spade. Here's a genuine made-in-USA (Wood) original from 1945. I am not sure, but I think it may be possible that it could have been produced to cover a sudden shortage among US troops in Korea in 1951. http://olive-drab.com/od_soldiers_gear_intrenching.php
Thank you, good info... I just wanted a shovel to throw in the back of the Subaru and you know interesting is always better

NJ Marty, Sears lantern is definitely a Coleman made lantern based on the Coleman 200A.
Great buy for 10 bucks. They usually bring a lot more than that.

Had last Friday off work and got skunked tool hunting so made a point of heading out Saturday morning and again came up empty handed

So was home during the early afternoon Saturday and on CL's a "Pre-Estate" sale had just popped up. Not too far away so I head over. Family members getting a start on organizing for the full blown sale this weekend. Family says feel free to search and hunt to your hearts content. Ton of hand tools and tool boxes in well used shape but not too bad but most of the stuff I already had and thus not really floating my boat. Since I was the only one there ended up cherry picking the following.

SK, Cornwell and Williams ratchets $5

View media item 72566

Mac prybar, Williams extension and Snap-On wrenches $5

View media item 72567

From a TOO on the way home, Hout drill cabinet that needs some TLC $5

View media item 72569

Today on the way home from an appointment stopped by a Thursday sale and dug out the Bonney wrench set that looks never used $2

.......... The second stop was a Honey Hole. .................
It was too much fun, I didn’t want to go home.

Stop 2 - $70
Tri-Star 12" x 8’ arch ramps (1500lbs cap. /pair)

100_2597.jpg 100_2598.jpg

.........., and the ramps (that I can use on my big trailer). The rest was just gravy.
.

Finally had a chance to research the ramps. I was only able to to find one reference from Farm Show Magazine in 1977. I was wrong, the capacity of the pair is 3000lbs. BONUS ! :D

I can load a small tractor with them. (Damn, now I need to buy a small tractor. :lol_hitti )

I'm getting some restraint and/or getting a handle on this overacquisition/hoarding thing. passed up a 26" Snap-on bottom cabinet (7 drawer, filled with low value tools) for $100. I passed up a $3 Snap-on hand carry tool box last week (rusty/greasy/old). Did buy a handfull of Snap-on screwdrivers and an SK 1/4" ratchet, but they were $.10 each, with a couple new looking Snap-0n drivers marked at $1. Same sale got a nice Swiss vise with original owners manuals and a bunch of accessory jaws and mounts for $3. Added a set of USA drill bits to 1/2" in an organizer and a ridgid pipe wrench and made it a $10 total. Passed up a large quantity of Craftsman sockets at $.10 each; did bring home a Proto universal/swivel, pair of pliers, and a Proto socket. Going out tomorrow; we'll see how my restraint works then! I'd like a nice Proto and Snap-on $.25 apiece sale to test my willpower.

An Adventure at an Estate Sale ,
or .... How a brown golf ball made me miss my number.

So, I'm nannying my 4yo nephew now, to complicate things he's still potty training. Four days a week he has summer school. Friday isn't one of those days, so estate sales are out.

Today I decided to try an experiment. Got mixed results.
There was a sale about a mile from my house, so since it was so close, I thought I'd see how he'd do. We spent about 20min sitting on the toilet before we left. No result. We got there about 15min before the sale opened. I figured that we'd get a high number, we were number 13. That should have been a sign.

We waited in line, and he was doing well. About 5min to go, he tells me he wants to use the bathroom. I had to tell him that there wasn't a bathroom we could use. Since we had just gone, I asked him "Do you really need to go, or do you just want to check out a new bathroom". He told me he just wanted to check it out. Believing him was a mistake.

Just as the sale was going to open, something brown the size of a golf ball rolled out of the leg of his shorts and onto the driveway. Everyone in line was good about it, thank goodness. Fortunately, I had a plastic bag in my pocket. So, after cleaning up the driveway, we had to walk all the way back down the street to the truck to clean up and change the kid. By the time we got back, everyone else was in the house.

As for the sale .....
I wasn't expecting to find anything there, I know the area and it was unlikely to have anything but a few junk homeowner tools anyway. I was right. Besides, for a change, that wasn't the point of going to the sale.

Other than the potty issue, my nephew did fairly well. He was very curious, but didn't get into trouble. If there had been a larger crowd, it might have been different. I may try this again, but it will have to be a promising sale to get me to chance it again. Maybe a few more small steps if they're close.

The only thing I picked up was a $4 plastic folding step stool for my nephew to use in my bathroom to wash his hands.

(for obvious reasons, I opted not to take pictures)
This is my life now, M-F. :dunno:

Too funny Jake and, yes you will laugh about it someday too. But a good story was the result and a memory both you and your nephew will have forever.
Thanks for sharing.

 Laugh later ? I'm laughing about it now.
As I've said before, I post my failures as well as successes so newbies reading this thread don't get the idea that this is easy or that cheap deals happen at every outing.

Success is the result of hard work in spite of failures.
(and sometimes a little poo ;))

To this day my friend's daughter he will tell to go to the bathroom before they leave... I swear 90% of the time he's not even out the driveway and she says, "I have to go to the bathroom"... Women, what can you do... :willy_nil
