This morning's Early Brid flea market haul...

View media item 73708
WWII Armorer's M5 chest, Ordnance Dept part number D28243. These were used to carry tools and repair parts for the M191 Browning .30 cal MG. I have a few of them - but this is the first one I've found with the removable tray intact. The leather handle will need replacing. Other than that and some light rust around the bottom seam, this one is in great shape.

nice find. the M5 chest is not easily found in my neck of the woods but I occasionally see one out in the wild. typically in various states of disrepair, the examples I see are almost always missing the removable tray and most often need repair/replacement of handle and one/both closing latches. I have an unaltered nice condition M5 with removable tray (no key) that I was fortunate to come across at a swap meet several years ago.

Found a garage sale today where a guy was getting a divorce and instead of giving half his stuff to his wife, he decided to sell it all on the cheap.

Picked up a couple of things
This is a 3/4" Socket Set I got for $10. The set appears to originally have been by Ottawana Tool Company as the Ratchet, most of the extensions, and some of the sockets are all marked "Ottawana Tool Company Made in the USA". There are also several Bonny sockets, a few Proto, 1 Plomb, and a blue point. The sliding breaker bar and one of the extensions is a Bonny.

A little beat up, but full of life.

I also picked up this box of Allen wrenches for $3. They are all either Bondhus or Allen. I haven't gone through it yet to figure out what all sizes are in there but there are easily 70+ of them.

Great score!! That box of Allen wrenches alone is a huge score.

BSG1, a good Locksmith shop should be able to get you that missing key, or if you can ID the key, Eprey often has keys. Possibly our own Jeff might have leads.

SWMBO & I finally cleared two decades of dead electronics out of our cellar this morning. Hit three TOO yard sales along the way, two of which were onesies sales. The third had partial spools of welding wire and a couple beat-up plumbing tools, but nothing for me.
Futile search for a poorly-signed and unadvertised (on CL at least) church flea market, followed by refreshments at the donut shop.
Quick side trip to the 31st St flea mkt yielded 3 small but interesting DOEs for $1:
Hinsdale chrome vanadium, Bonney carbon steel, and what I take to be a Bridgeport, because of their other wrenches claiming SAE/metric equivalents.

Scored a few things at the flea today. It's not everyday that I come across some pebbles.

Those metal stamps are very cool. I have a set of various brands I got from work a couple years ago - never heard of Matthews.
Thanks, Jeff! Same thing here. I've cobbled together a few sets over the years, a mish mash of mfgrs, and not a one of them are MATTHEWS. As luck would have it, a friend of mine on a different tools board where I posted the same find works for a company that is right down the street from them. He's going to pop in and see if they have any sort of historical information.

In 1944 they replaced the leather handle with the collapsible type metal handle. I've seen guys misidentify them as postwar, but they are definitely WWII. The paltry clasp-type locks on the Union-made boxes were made by Excelsior of Stamford, CT. I've included a photo below of the late war box with the collapsing metal handle and also one with a pair of keys, one shown n the ground, so you can see what it looked like.

Went to one sale today, picked up a No 15 North Brothers Yankee Screwdriver that works well, 2 Craftsman and 1 Stanley screwdriver, several wood handled ice picks, small gouge, linoleum knife, 3 plumb bobs (1 is Miller's Falls), metal socket box filled with drill bits, couple pounds of screws, a box of lag bolts, a metal cash box with the change insert, and a Blue Point nut driver all for $15. 398ec0df1bb965694e5f6bc26d99ed17.jpg74c25c4584b8f19a5713926e571985ba.jpg57d3abc00f20858064b711f0f18a6ad8.jpgdda9f1cda29e1193164d597b47ad1397.jpg065150a673ab694eeb5189266d0f139c.jpg8093c7aeaf261b57cd5e83a6c3072744.jpg

Well I haven't been out in awhile. Been working on house projects. But, check out my wall of clamps. Almost exclusively from yard/estate sales. 6b18780ac17709753b9ea40aa4fd3572.jpg

thanks much. I'm very fond of the chest and it is part of a modest WWII collection I am fortunate enough to be the caretaker of for now. I happen to have a few examples of the pictured wood 49-1-84 ammo chest as well.

Lots of goodness being found! Great going guys!

JV: I'm steeling your Plumb Bob's PO's Idea with the Clothes pin! That si so much better for use that my practice of winding ther line on the Bob! I like that you can clip the end of the string for storage and that would also work when you have the line on something instead of a temp knot!

I was out for only 2-1/2 hrs today despite having 11 planned stops! I also his a few TOO's but I don't think any of those panned out.

First stop was one I always try to make this family or extended family has several houses together and they sprawl this Giant Yard sale with probably 5-6 families, with one guy providing the "anchor" Always good stuff mostly great prices, sometimes not...

Anyway I hit them first and got two Boxes, oen metal and the plastic "FORD" box. I'm hoping some careful work with plastic cleaner will make that nicer. an Iron Shinto Priest (I'm guessing - it was made in Japan), Brass "Queen" bell, Bronze Cherub candle holder (the socket is on the back) the small clamp and the wire reel. in the next photo the Vise - made from aluminum was also from this place. All for $5.50! the vise will go into my rig so if I meed a third hand I can clamp it to say the trailer hitch and use it. Weighs like a pound and a half so way lighter that the one its replacing.

attachment.php

Already mentioned the vise; two other sales got my the Weather service radio That will in camp this year; and the toy gun. a buck each

attachment.php

A new pair of boots for me! my size, brand new Tmberline stump Jumpers, ten bucks! Comfy! and light!

attachment.php

The next stop had a bunch of small carry boxes but none called to me. What did call to me were three "pots" the Waffle iron is a Bundt Aluminum with dual temp gauges; A West Bend Aluminum pan that cleaned up really nice, and the last is a no name SS Warmer for rolls? I think you are supposed to put it over steam? I think a direct flame, even a small one would get too hot...

attachment.php

attachment.php

The West Bend cleaned up!

attachment.php

And at the same place these two desktop waste bins. The pink is for my youngest daughter, and the orange was for my mini workbench.

attachment.php

More to come!

This stop was at a block sale. older gent, and his wife clearing stuff out.

I snagged the SK socket set out of a carry box just before another guy bought the whole box...the SS "holder" had some surgical forceps and scissors in it, but they were beat. then the compass, its the type that takes a golf or old school bowling scoring pencil. $12 all! I'm pretty sure the SK set is complete. All the sockets are there, two short extensions, and the ratchet, the flex adapter is another brand, but I don't think one was in the set originally.

attachment.php

Another block sale and I got the gears, Pencil cup, brass nuts (for switches I believe)and new microfiber cleaning cloth. Plus the camp bags in the following pic. all for 2.50

attachment.php

The drying rack was all of $5! all stainless with plastic fittings, very light, folds FAR more compact than our old wood racks, and cleans a lot easier! No Brainer!

Managed to stop at the Habitat Restore this afternoon and got out for $5.65. Picked up a nice 3 foot metal tool rack, a Foremost metal 1/4 drive socket set box with 9 sockets, a tap wrench, few screwdrivers, Stanley nut driver, a 1/4" driver, Sterling volt meter with a 1916 patent date, 14 mm wrench and an early Craftsman socket. The other sales I went by today weren't worth stopping at.853e6fe23526a0ce41dade95cda367c5.jpg4b4d3e20358058fabf09c3a3b7bd451e.jpg7f990928d8fd392663b7d537b4bf1ea8.jpgceccb3a426b3c8fbd8fcca83129f90ff.jpg398078420f2da8a20312e46b7152e1db.jpg

I've got a set like that. Assuming yours is the same as mine, here's a list of the contents.

I went to three different sales today, first sale I got the Craftsman colormatic welder which came with a different set of leads, welding rods, and two helmets. I'll take it apart to make sure nothing is shorting out or dirt dobbers are built in the unit.

Second sale I got the Craftsman snow blower and the gray tote with Craftsman V series socket, metric! It's missing one of the V socket and was replace with a different series.

Then I stopped at the third sale and picked up the red socket box with a 3/8" sk ratchet and varies socket mostly Japan/taiwan but some snap-on, bonnet, SK, and peen corps mixed in the set.

Damage for the day was $68 for all of it!

I went back to the same sale this morning and picked up 1960s craftsman toolbox for $45 I may have to pimp this one out . Going to see if I can find some ceramic badges re-chrome the pulls and get it all powder coated. Need to figure out the rivets.

Drop the truck off at the house grab the car and headed up to an auction an hour away. Crab dip some good stuff. The old farmer had painted everything so there is some cleanup to do but underneath several layers of paint there is some real nice stuff. Winchester chisels, 604 bedrock plane , New old stock Buck brothers gooseneck gouge , Broad ax, draw knives and some other goodies

Thanks Mike. It's been a pretty rough road the last few months but I never stopped picking. I just couldn't spare the time to post here . The last five months I found a ton of good stuff, maybe two tons LOL . I'll try to keep up better

Crazy here because of the eclipse. Lots of traffic (no congestion) and activities to entertain the tourists. We have campers in our field, but I was able to sneak away a little this morning.

First stop yielded a damaged Craftsman ratcheting DBE wrench for $0.50. The 13/16" end is broken, but the 7/8" will be used on my lathe to adjust the quick-change tool post. It is tattooed "Alascom." Also found the 48" Rigid aluminum pipe wrench at the same place. It has been broken and welded, so I was able to get it for $40.00. It appears that the weld was done properly, so I'll be fine if I don't use a cheater pipe on it, like they did to break it in the first place.

Next stop was the stainless steel tank for a forest fire fighting backpack pump. It is an unusual design, but plugging the extra hole and adding a hose barb at the bottom of the tank will convert it to a standard design. I have the hand pump for that, since the standard tanks rot out before the brass parts wear out. I thought $7.00 for a stainless tank was quite reasonable.

The last stop brought the six six-packs of Dewalt 2" long #2 Phillips bits and the .22 cartridge belt for $2.00 total.

Not bad for a very short morning. :)

You're welcome. I believe mine might be from a transition period, since it is entirely SK Wayne but the card and box say SK tools. These were my grandpas so I know he bought them this way. At some point the smaller size 6 points were swapped out for 12 point sockets from an earlier set. I've got the correct period 6 point sockets to put in it, but I've left it the way I got it.

Hey Top, that Craftsman lathe will do a lot of work. Did you get the change gears with it? If you don't do any threading, you can leave it set up for a fine feed and it will get the job done. I have a similar Atlas with a quick change, and rarely change feed rates. The QC comes in handy for threading.

You will keep entertained learning to use that lathe!

Prov, do any camping? If I had that SS tank it would get converted to a pressurized water supply/washer tank. How many gallons? Cool Find!

hey Top! Welcome back! Are you all healed up and back to work, or still working on that part?

Thanks outlaw. I tried to go back to work. Made it four days and the shots they gave me in my back wore off. So it's still a struggle . I'm actually getting another MRI in the morning to see what damage I did to it throwing crane mats . 175 pound mats are pretty unforgiving.

I'm sure it will keep me entertained for quite some time LOL. I've played on the wood lathe quite a bit but this is very different.

Outlaw, I'm past the camping stage! We use the pump cans for fire protection on our timberland. We keep a couple around any intentional fire just in case. They hold 5 gallons and that is more than enough to put out any small fire if you don't let it get too big. Each pump has two nozzles - a stream nozzle for distance and a mist nozzle to wet things down. I've even put out burning oil (from welding sparks igniting oil from an old leak) by cooling it down with the mist nozzle.

They are very handy and keep the real fire truck from having to deal with tiny problems. If you camp in the mountains of N. Cali. you should have one at your camp. It works much better on wood/grass/brush than a dry chemical extinguisher, and you don't have to charge it with compressed air. Just refill at a creek or with a bucket and keep going!

Prov, I'm in process for adding a couple of 2-1/2 Gallon water extinguishers to the water supply instead of water jugs, partly for that very reason. I can use them if we have a problem, and I can refill my 5 gallon tank with them as needed. Another use would be to hose out the inside a deer when cleaning it. I once did exactly that many years ago with one I brought along. Fell out of the habit so getting it back together.
