Think I have a spare that size. Will look when I get home.

Edit: Sorry, only one of that size. Almost all the others have double to triple of, but not the big boy.

Craftsman =V= 1 1/16" x 1 1/8" DOE. It's a common wrench, but I haven't stumbled on to one yet. Craftsman wrenches are so common, my philosophy is to let them fall into my lap as opposed to seeking them out. But, if you come across one for a buck, I think it would still be economical to ship across the country :)

Brian

Speaking of falling in your lap ...

This afternoon, I met a man to pick up the owner's manual to a vise a purchased yesterday about a mile from home. The parking lot we were supposed to meet in was fenced off so I texted him and arranged to meet across the street in the parking lot of a thrift store that, until now, I was oblivious to. After meeting the guy, I walked into the store, which appeared to be mostly housewares and used clothing, and asked the clerk if they had any tools or hardware. She led me to a corner of the store where a small chest of drawers sat labeled "tools". Most of it was chinese junk, but these guys jumped out at me.

Craftsman =V= DOE wrenches that look like new.

I walked up to the counter, handed over the wrenches, and waited for a price. After a moment of silence, I said "How about $5 for all 3". She quickly agreed and I happily walked out of a store I never new existed until today!

I mentioned in my previous post about a vise I purchased yesterday.

The ad had been listed on CL for barely 10 minutes when I found it. I swear it was just lucky timing!

Anyways, this is a Craftsman "Crown Top" logo, No. 506-51830 4" swivel vise made by Columbian. It was mounted on a Craftsman grinder stand.

I should have taken photos of it when I got home, but I was too eager to tear it apart and clean it up. It's only half finished so the finished pix will have to wait.

$50.

BTW - I passed on the 3/4 HP Craftsman commercial block grinder on a Craftsman stand because I already have three 3/4 HP blocks. He was only asking $100.

Brian

Already in my little green flea market notebook.

This is pretty much my philosophy about all the tools I collect and the sets I am trying to complete, regardless how common or rare. I know I could run daily or weekly searches on fleaBay or etsy or Craigslist, and find stuff more frequently, and faster, but more than half the fun and the reward for me in all this is in the challenge. I have used WANTED ads here before when I get down to the nitty gritty or I get desperate. And I have used eBay for an occasional piece where the odds are just too astronomical to happen on it by chance.

Stopped by a neighborhood sale and p/u a Craftsman 4 hp trimmer/edger for $20. Wouldn't stay started after priming. Maybe 30 sec or so run time. Made sure it had some gas (very little), changed plug, air filter, and added some gas I had that has Sta-Bil in it, did the same thing, run for about 30 sec. then quite. Tried again, and this time keep pressing the primer bulb, until the rpm's got higher, then it ran without a problem. Ummmmm. Maybe a carb rebuild, or the gas that was in it was old.

So stopped by another g-sale close to me, and p/u a Desmond Stephan 500 vice. $15. Couldn't pass it up. Weights about 20 # or so. Have no idea why the pics are sideways.

Nice Hinsdale set! If you have a moment, we'd love to have more photos of the set posted on the Hinsdale thread.

Macduf: What Brian said! Sweet find! It has the rocker patent ratchet. (The head pivots around that pin.) If you go to the Hinsdale show off thread, you'll see my slightly later 3/8-drive set in a very similar box with the same exact logo on the lid.

I picked up this tiny DUNLAP tap and die set for a DUNLAP-crazy friend today. The double offset screwdriver has the wartime spec configuration (the ends orthogonal to each other and the shank), wartime spec stock (octagonal) and perfect wartime length spec (8-1/2”). These are NOT easy to find. The little combo is a Blue-Point OEX-120 3/8, and the sliding tee is a New Britain Circle-NB 1/2-inch drive.

I just want to say that driving an hour and a half for what looks to be a good shop estate sale only to find out the fellow was a Harbor Freight aficionado is rather depressing. I did manage to find some things, pics tomorrow.

We see this style marking a lot with tools that were used by the military. We have come across USA, USN, USAAC, USAAF and USAF. Usually done with an electric pencil or other etching device.

And it is usually whatever military presence was most common in your area. Sacramento was an AirForce town, so you would see a lot of USAAF or USAF maked tools. The Bay Area had a lot of Navy, so I would see a lot of USN marked tools. A friend who worked near an Army base in Texas saw a lot of USA marked. But you would see others too.

bmwrd0, I know what you mean about harbor freight dissapointments.
I help out at a local pawn shop on Fridays after I get off work, I do their tools. So after some one defaults on a loan against tools or they out right sell the tools to the shop and after the waiting period. Then I take them out and make sets or just price them out. So yesterday I go in and the owner tells me that he has 3 tool boxes for me to work on today. Every one of them was just H.F. junk. Nothing good in any of the boxes, nothing followed me home. Rich

I ran up to Nashua to pick up a load of lumber for the garage build and scouted out sales in the area online. Many, many sales with "tools" in the ads, but this estate sale had a picture of a workbench with a Versa Vise on it. Yep, I'm stopping in there.

However, as it was the second day of the sale, the vise was long gone. I then resorted to "Well, I might as well buy something..." mode, and found some interesting goodies amongst the debris in the basement shop. Total price was $10, no haggling.

Two tools rolls...
One had an almost complete set of Drop Forged Select Steel DOEs (with a tiny Gray in the smallest pocket).

When I unrolled the metric Indestro, my breath quickened...

But after examining a little closer...

It was full of "furin" wrenches....

But the good (AKA valuable) kind...

Four Mercedes Benz DOEs, two Hazets and a Warner. I should be able to quadruple my money on this stop!

VERY Slow day, which with the current project/Schedule isn't entirely a bad thing. Trying to make the new car top tent this weekend. Heck, maybe today...

Only three planned stops, several TOO's were empty of anything I wanted.

First stop was a mini block (court) sale, two houses. I added to the wicked lamp collection and picked up a decent condition Auto Lite Carbide lamp for $3 each. the old woman selling was a former antique shop keeper selling off the remains of her stock. she ahd a dozen more, but I was selective for ones that caught my sys. two take a small round wick and one a small flat wick, that one was still a small lamp, but with a full sized, 3/4" wide wick! very different!

Next door had a NOS Freud Diablo Framing blade. three bucks!

Last stop was a near flop with only this book. Cool book full of odd bal stuff either informative or how to's, (typing knots, building wood go-crts or tree houses. a battery from coins, that sort of thing.

Spent 20 bucks for a car quest impact driver, a plomb 3/8 ratchet and wrench, needle nose, and a cool old SK tool chest. I need it like a hole in the head, but it was too cool to leave behind.

So we hit a local sale at the church and 2 townwide sales in the area and found some stuff.

It's a small clamp weekend - 3 B&C 2", 1 B&C 2" and a Cincinnati Tool Co 2" with the cool thumbscrew. The B&C's are different vintages but still cool.

I also bought the Luxo lighted magnifier - I'm told the light isn't working and he "implied" it was the bulb. I have another one with a worn out arm that I can cannibalize as needed for parts.

I saw a Craftsman Gold Series Benchtop drill press in rough condition and I just couldn't take it home as I don't have the time/energy for a project like that right now.

Cheers

Jim

PD: I hate MS - the iPhone to pc works fine on my laptop but differently on my desktop - hence the rotated photos.

While reading the evil Facebook a marketplace ad came up for a Waterloo toolbox,I immediately messaged the seller and wanted details and was willing to purchase. After a couple messages back guy says he didn't realize his wife put the ad up at $100 he was looking for $200,I explained $200 was out of my budget and we settled on $150.

He threw the tools in while I was there BS'ing about hunting, shooting and tool buying. I didn't know until I got there it was a 33inch wide box,I was thinking 26":rocker::drool:

The majority of the tools are Craftsman with some Snap On ,Allen,Williams mixed in along with the Taiwan ,Duralast,Kobalt,Stanley stuff.
The meter works, flashlights need batteries .
The box has a key/lock for the lower but no lock on the upper.I'll have to look thru my stash and see if I have a replacement.

I've been wanting a small shop crane/engine hoist for moving equipment around the shop. Been watching CL with no luck. I found $99 Harbor Freight coupon for their 1 ton crane, I was going to go there this morning and get one. But just before I left, I checked CL again. Whoa! A like new 1 ton shop crane was just posted for $25! I contacted the seller immediately. He was 10 minutes away, I got there in 8. I paid the price and loaded it in my truck. The guy only used it one time. I rarely get one of those "you ****" deals, but I think this qualifies:rocker:

Went to half a dozen or so sales this AM, nothing, what a waste. When I got back did my CL vise search, up popped a Mastercraft cross slide table listed as "Vise misc." Sent an email and headed out as soon as I heard back. Got the table, only has half of the vise on it, can never seem to find one with a complete vise. Seller was a nice guy, ended up buying the little 3" Desmond Simplex vise from him, missing the collar or garter. I hope someone didn't break it trying to get the rusted vise open, took me about 5 min. to free it up. Also bought the auto body pulling clamps from him. He gave me the Herbrand DBE wrench and the block of steel. Total was $35. He has a new in the box Wilton 645, firm at $200., somehow has the idea it's an $800. vise, which it isn't. Didn't think there was enough meat left on the bone at that price.

oops, you jinxed yourself. No solicitation for a You **** allowed. Let's just say you have my respect for being in the right place at the right time and jumping on that whale of a good deal. I just bought a 1 ton crane from HF and put it together today. Their instructions are terrible and they have a bad habit of forgetting hardware in the box. But they work when completed.
I would have loved to find a deal like yours.

It did, until you pointed it out.
Rule #1 = You cannot claim or imply suckage.

Still, a good score. Nice job.

Slept in this morning. There were a few YS's, but nothing that excited me.

Lots of good vises this week there guys.

Alinc and Catfish- some nice toolbox finds there!

ndnchf sounds like it was your lucky day. For that price one can't complain.

Edit: i see the guys didnt let that slide, lol.

Today I made it to the flea market. It was late and pretty lame, but i found some things.

I gave the old DI ratchet a second go and ended up coming home with it. Here is a pic of how grimy it was. No plug either and the woman had wanted $8 for it. :dunno:
After a quick back and forth negotiation I rescued it for $4. Not sure why but I couldn't stand to see it sit there in the junk.

Friday's finds.

Edit: Now that I have a few minutes I will post more comment. All this came from one estate sale on Friday. I spent $102 total of which $40 was the vise.

Pic 1: Upper left Wizard pliers, Western auto tack hammer, Petersen Vise Grips, bottom left Klein knife, strippers and pliers, Kraueter pliers and a working mini-Maglight. All the rest are Craftsman, the black handle screwdrivers are Craftsman Industrial, I really like the pair of steel handle Craftsman axes.

Pic 2: X-Acto knife set, Chesco T-handle 8 piece USA made allen wrench set, Door welting, Freud carpenters marking tool, a very nice Starrett square and a brass wire brush.

Pic 3: Klein 5142 utility bag in nice shape.

Pic 4,5,6: Rock Island 574 vise in nice shape, the swivel lock is not missing, just removed for the photo.

Pic 7: Toy Playskool rocking horse and boat model, these will be flips.

bmwrd0, I know what you mean about harbor freight dissapointments.
Rich

That sounds like the perfect job for a tool guy!!
