Finds from a couple recent estate sales, all USA. Matco BJP-7025 ball joint press with some of the adapters, OTC 2.0L ZETEC engine timing set, KD spark plug boot puller, Giller GS43 60T 1/2dr ratchet, 7/16 thru 11/16 Craftsman =V= 3/8dr flex sockets (one Duro-Chrome), Wright 4 3/4" 1/2dr extension, SK 3/8 and 1/4 screwdrivers, Snap-on 3/8dr 1/4 and 5/8 sockets, 1/2dr 3/4 through 1 5/16 impact sockets (plus 1/2F-3/4M adapter; largest three sockets are 3/4dr), and an empty 15" SK socket set box that I'll use to store my pickle fork set.

The impact sockets complete for me a 16-piece set 3/8 through 1 5/16 of USA brands: Snap-on (6) , Proto (3), Bonney (3), Armstrong (2), Wright (1), and Duro-Chrome (1) - plus Snap-on and Proto adapters - I have $15 in this impact set.

Hit a couple estate sales on Friday, with pretty sad results. The first one was a family affair, and it was pretty light on tools. But I picked what I felt were worth it too me:

Warranted Superior keyhole saw, box of drill bits, 1/2 USA made, sandpaper (always buy) a flex shaft coupler and a couple shorty wood handle drivers. 4 bucks for all that.
The second estate sale was a newer farm house, shop, barn and a total bust. Spent an hour walking around looking at overpriced ****. They did have a couple horse carriages, but not really my thing.
Saturday didn't look very promising and I had a ton of work to do at my other house, but there was a Catholic church rummage sale that listed tool, so I thought why not. And I am glad I did, as it was half marked price for everything:

The highlight was a complete Dunlop tap and die set, which I don't really need, but couldn't pass up. Also, an Action deep socket set, Diston 25' tape, P&C 5/16 combo, Williams feeler gauge and I think a Garand tool, not sure. $12 for every thing.
Then I cruised around for other sales, not finding much until I hit the iffy side of town, and then I found a guy moving to an old folks home, selling off his shop stuff. Most I didn't need, but I picked up 5 Jorgensen clamps for $20. Forgot to take a picture though...

Things I spotted but did NOT buy this weekend..

The wartime 1/2-gallon measure, the wartime M6 tool roll, and the Athol swivel base vise were too expensive. The '46 Ford truck was not for sale. And the hardware folk art (airport flagman?) was nifty enough to snap a picture for your guys, but I didn't want it bad enough to buy it. :)

Thanks for the heads up.
NOT ALLOWED.
Not a good way to start your first post on the forum.

Uh oh. What'd I miss? Mistaking this for a marketplace?

Flyer- thanks, yeah the seller wanted 60 for the Armstrong and I was ready to bite. I bought a couple other things from him and expressed my interest again and he said 50. :D. Hard to believe it was still there period by the time I arrived.

CB those are neat vises. The one I picked up a while back, I did a big no no. I must have been playing around with it and set the jaws somewhere else. They don't bolt on, just set in place. One day I looked and no jaws on it because they had wound up in a bucket. I learned they best be kept together because too easy to lose.

Sorry honest mistake, that's why I even stated if its not the correct place please point me in the right direction...that didn't happen, just got a snide reply from a senior member about a wrong way to start a first post instead of helping a guy out.

post lasted a whole 5 min before I removed it.

No tools this time, but I found these in the bottom of a box. 50 cents each I could not pass them up.

Mattblast, those DHP-8 pliers are used to remove window cranks and inside door handles that are held on with a hidden clip. Suspect DHP = Door Handle Pliers

Haven't had time for posting for a while. Trying now to get "back in the groove." Anyway, last Friday I went to an estate sale on its 2nd day. Everything had been picked over. For example, I missed a Mac Tools bench vise, which was still there but sold when I arrived. Everything was neglected and filthy. But I soon realized that the sale mgr had NO idea what all those car parts were, and just wanted them gone. She kept asking for offers. So, I pulled some mouse-eaten rags away to uncover an intake assy sitting on a shelf, and said, "I'll offer $20 for everything on this shelf." She instantly said, "SOLD!"

Other folks saw this happen, and everyone started grabbing up everything, and offering low amounts. But most of the stuff was awful, and I was happy to just load this up and leave.

The Polaris dealership where I have always had my quad serviced is going out of business, due to the owner's health. They are having an auction this Saturday, Oct 21, 2017. The shop had been in business a long time, servicing farm equipment before they took on a Polaris franchise deal.
Anyway, the guy who ran the place was really good to work with, and I came to like him over the years. But now he is battling cancer, and decided to sell out. I plan to be at his auction, and since he has lots of old garage tools and equipment, I figured you guys would be interested.
So last Saturday I drove by the place and saw the door open. I stopped, and he allowed me to "preview" the stuff. So, as a courtesy to all my GJ buddies, I am supplying you with some photos in advance. (Now ain't I a swell guy?)

First thing I saw in his shop was a farm wagon, upon which he had been piling stuff to get ready for the sale.

Lots of stuff on the wagon to see.

This big old 3/4" drive socket set is mostly OTC brand. But the ratchet and breaker bar are Mac tools.

There is a pair of beautiful old tap-n-die sets in wooden boxes. Gorgeous; both of them!

There are cool old cabinets full of old parts, etc, all over the place. Would look awesome in my garage, if it were large enough.

I love this big old Dayton brand bench grinder.

I put my hand in there for a size reference. Sunlight coming through the window made the photo trickier, but I hope you can see it.

I really like that little metal Dorman fastener cabinet and boxes. Wonder if it would fit in my overcrowded garage somehow?

Anyone need an armature lathe? I TOLD you this shop had been here a long time! LOL

Great looking assortment of air tools around the shop. He said they all work fine.

I have admired his old Blackhawk jack for years, and the owner knows it. LOL. It is the style which used to have a light mounted in it, which would shine under the car. The light is long gone, of course.

There is cool old stuff hanging all over this old shop.

Did I mention neat old benches, all crowded with stuff?

Ok, that's enough for one string of photos. I'll post some more in a few minutes, after refreshing my cocktail.

No Powerarm for me either, but my day was full.

First stop of the day was an estate with the title "Huge digger's sale" and a description of "BRING BUCKETS & FLASHLIGHTS - having issues in the shop"

It ended up being my only stop of the day which makes it my kind of sale :)

The amount of stuff I brought home was a bit overwhelming. I filled the passenger floor of my car level with the seat, put stuff in trunk and back seat, and still had to leave and come back with the Suburban.

First pick is a teaser only. I filled a 5-gallon bucket with Proto, Plomb, P&C, S-K, Snap-on, MAC, Craftsman, and much much more for $30. That's ~100lbs of vintage American made tools for $.33/lb. Most of that stuff is still in the car. I'll unload and take stock of everything tomorrow.

Brian

I'm quoting myself to emphasize the overwhelming part. Since this forum likes order, a picture of tools packing the floor of your Camry isn't going to draw much attention. So last night I began the job of unloading, sorting, and inventorying the hundreds of pounds of tools I picked up.

I ended up making two trips to this sale as I had to go back to pick up my jack, so on the second trip, I grabbed a large Craftsman "heritage" era tool box and packed it full. It will take me a couple days to go through everything.

Part 1 is sockets, socket sets, and drive tools.

All this, plus the combo, DBE, DOE and specialty wrenches, pliers, hammers, and who-knows-what cost me a total of $40.

- Socket boxes stacked to the right of my Craftsman middle chest with mixed sets of Proto, Craftsman, and S-K sockets - primarily 3/8" drive.

- Proto 5200 "flying lady" 1/2" drive socket box. Some of the sockets are present. The rest are not.

Leaning against the wall are (2) OTC adjustable hook spanner wrenches. The larger of the two is an OTC CT-685. The second isn't clean enough to read yet.

- Proto "Dyna-ring" 1/2" drive deep impact socket set. 3/8" to 1 3/8". Missing only the 13/16".
- Proto "Dyna-ring" 1/2" drive shallow impact socket set. 7/16" to 1 3/16". Missing 1 1/4" and 3/4" sockets.
- 10 Proto 1/2" drive deep impact sockets.
- 8 Snap-on 1/2" deep impact sockets.
- 2 Proto 1/2" drive swivel impact sockets.
- 2 Proto 1/2" drive shallow impact sockets.
- 6 Proto 3/4" drive shallow impact sockets.
- Proto 3/4" to 1" drive adapter.
- 55 Proto and Challenger 1/2" drive shallow sockets, ranging from Proto LA to modern.
- 15 Proto and Challenger 1/2" drive deep sockets.
- 60+ P&C, Plomb, Snap-on, Craftsman =V= & BE 1/2", 3/8", & 1/4" drive sockets.
- 2 Husky 1/2" drive ratchets
- Craftsman RHFT 1/2" drive ratchet.
- Craftsman =V= "pear head" 1/2" drive ratchet
- Plomb "Pebble" 5449 1/2" drive ratchet
- S-K Diamond logo 1/2" drive ratchet
- 2 Wards Powr Kraft 3/8" drive ratchets.
- Challenger 3/8" drive ratchet
- Blackhawk 3/8" drive ratchet
- Snap-on 3/8" and 1/2" drive speed wrenches.
- P&C 18" breaker bar
- 3 P&C 1/2" drive extensions
- S-K Diamond logo 3/8" drive breaker bar
- 2 S-K Diamond logo 1/4" drive breaker bars
- 2 S-K Diamond logo 3/8" drive extensions.
- S-K and Bonney 3/4" drive 16" extensions.

Items that were separately priced:

- Stanley 700 Corner vise. I haven't cleaned it but it's probably unused. Even has the original label. $12.

- The Bicket Machine Tool Co. 2 1/2" machining vise. After a little WD, this thing is smooth as butter and has barely been used. $15.

I'm sure I missed a few things in the pictures but I'm too tired to care. Tomorrow is another day of sorting, cleaning, blah blah.

Brian

Everywhere you look; more neat old garage equipment.

There is a small wall display of older Milton air fittings. In my experience, older Milton stuff is among the very best.

Cabinets, anyone?

This gray one is wooden. Very cool. The owner called it a "gasket cabinet."

There are dozens of parts bins, of all descriptions. Most of them still loaded with parts.

Anyone need a forklift?

Or how about a 6-wheel ATV? All 4 rear wheels drive; front wheels do not. 250 cc 2-stroke. Interesting, for sure.

There are two A-frame engine hoists.

Old tire changer. Still works well, he says.

LOTS of garage equipment, parts, etc; which is not yet sorted for selling.

Anyone need to assemble a clutch disc, or brake shoes? I've got a bunch of rivets, and there is a rivet machine at this upcoming auction:

And here it is; one of the grand prizes of this auction (drum roll please). It is a Peter Wright 149 LB anvil, in good condition. I have one just like it, but obviously I need another one!

Check out the beautiful condition of this old post vise. Note the straight handle, the lack of rust, and everything intact.

How 'bout a nifty old Atlas drill press. It was still being used every day, right up until the shop closed. Nice, eh?

And now for the last featured item, and the item that I plan to bid on myself. I really like this old Wilton bullet vise. Maybe even enough to swap it on my own workbench in place of the nice Reed vise I have there now.

It's got 6" wide jaws, and I like it. So all you other guys, BACK OFF!! ...Ok, just kidding. But I do really like it.

This auction is in New Vienna, Ohio. I have no financial interest in it myself (except I want that Wilton vise!). New Vienna is on Ohio St Rt 73, between Hillsboro and Wilmington. Let me know if you are coming, so I can meet you and say hello. I'll be the bidder anxiously watching that vise, and a few other items. LOL

I did a little searching on Twertsy's website http://toolarchives.com/ and found my OTC spanner wrench in the 1949 catalog. Very cool stuff!

Nice. That's a monster spanner.

Eh, it happens. A handful of people thought this was the selling section over the few years I've been posting.

Good luck with your vise.

Lump what a teaser. Looks like a good one. I want that Mac ratchet!

Yeah, me too, 3bay. There are 4 or 5 items in that sale which I really want. Wish me luck! And if any GJ members are going to be there, PM me. I enjoy meeting other members face to face.

Picked up this little Dunlop yesterday. I grabbed it for the base, but this guy is way too small and the base is way too short. He does have a set of smooth rolling ball casters. Thinking it's from a table saw? Are all the larger bottom castings the same for the stands? Grinder is smaller, two post bigger, so 3 styles?

The best I can do is reference the Craftsman Tool Stand catalog for you. None of the illustrations show a drill press mounted to a stand, nor is there a stand mentioned for drill presses on the model number list.

I'm just speculating here - which I am wont to do - but I doubt a King Seeley drill press was ever meant to be mounted on that style stand - they are much too top heavy.

Hope this helps.

My $5 find at an antique store. previously marked at $35, but the drill did not turn-over when plugged in, so I got the whole lot of them for only $5. That's right a home woodworking kit to include a grinder, a circular saw, a jig saw, and a drill press all in one kit. I'm so excited, I think the drill might just need a new fuse. still gotta research what kind of fuse it takes, or just take it out to see if it has a model#.....

I think they're all in good shape considering the age of at least 30 yo.

Cool set. Drill might be due for a set of brushes and cord. To me, it is unusual to have a fuse on a drill. Just my .02

This is as far as I got it apart, looks pretty dirty in there, might just need to clean the contacts on which touch the motor, and spray some electric parts cleaner on the switch.

Mr P, I've been watching for a set like that. Never seen the grinder attachment. Jigsaw is cool, they actually made one that you would use on a radial arm saw. Crazy.

I imagine these are the brushes I need to clean?

Also, this can't be good for the motor, right? Would the damage be reason enough for it not to run?

Also, this filth looks like a bunch of sawdust, any cleaning suggestions?

Lumpy, I've never seen a White Farm Equipment like that before.

And those 6 wheeled Polaris contraptions sucked the big one, but all of them with that general layout did back then.

I guess it's called a commutator. A green scotch pad, another drill, and electric parts cleaner made this thing look like new in no time at all.

Hey, thanks for the input, Racinfarmer. I've never seen one of those 6 wheeled atv's. And if it goes cheaply, I might have been tempted. But I have 3 four-wheeler atv's now, plus 2 or 3 3-wheelers. So I sure don't need another.
