Battery pliers?
The pliers are steeldraulic brake pliers, made by a few mfrs for brakes on older cars (i know AA can fill you in).
Or even better, a 1941 Herbrand catalog, which says they were used on the knurled brake adjusting nuts on steeldraulic brakes, and cites Auburn, Hupmobile (that's one letter 'm' away from being a teenager's joke!), Oakland and Nash.

I have one, too, with the same marking. See thumbnail. They date to the 1940's. Those with the fancy script Herbrand logo are older.

Yes correct! I was at rileysans last night and he had an action tool tin. It said made by thorsen on it!
:eyecrazy: I NEED THAT TOOL TIN! (Will it hold a 1/2-drive set?)

This plier wrench is neat. Even has the price stamped in it.
Famously! It came originally with a number of different sizes. Believe it or not, there are ******** Plierwrench guys out there (and some right here) looking to complete their kit. If you google it you'll find a bunch of information.

Well, it's been awhile so today I went to an auction full of military stuff. I showed up late, stayed too long, spent too much, and came home late. Completely worth it. This is only half.....

Duplex Ft. Smith, Arkansas cantilever tool box no. 0514...interesting design...you push the handle down and it opens the box.
Patent 1675484 if you're interested in reading more, dave. Assignd to John Coe of Jamestown NY, near Sherman, where Duplex was located. They made this box for the Ordnance Dept during WWII. They also made them for Snap-On. I have yet to find an OD one in the wild, although I know several guys who have them. I have seen several of the red ones. Nice box. What do you mean by "Ft. Smith, Arkansas"? Is it marked like that somewhere on it?

Waltrip 88, you need to post a pic of that vintage craftsman box in the
Vintage toolbox thread, so me and the rest of the craftsman box fans
can drool over it !

Great pick up! Stick around long enough and you'll see one (or two) of everything! This is my Heritage Craftsman 2 drawer box I acquired back in June.

I'll say my usual. Looking good guys!

Nothing but rain here today, and company visiting for the weekend, which don't exactly go well together. An opportunity to binge watch Stranger Things 2. I doubt any tool hunting is in store for tomorrow.

CB- saw your note about that wood vise. Good buy. I looked at it. Think I was tempted by everything there based on the fair prices.

Like tin medic said, it has a metal tag riveted on the front. Here is a pic. From what i gathered, they became part of the Proto empire.

Cool. Thanks, swing. What are you going to do with it? I've got 5 or 6 instruments off of a WWII multi-engine plane that I'm not sure what to do with yet.

Currently I'm in the middle of overhauling my basement as an 1800sf man cave. I also picked up a propeller, pistons and cylinders off a b-25 along with a lot more instruments. My plan it to find all the pins that power the back lighting on all the instruments and flush mount them in the wall around the edge of the ceiling so I can flip a light switch and have them all light up. The propeller will get shaft mounted with a belt drive to be used as a ceiling fan.

Fun fact: that Sherman area is where I hunted as a kid. Not sure what town the woods were considered but got my first deer and more down there. Its close to the PA line, some PA guys would hunt the property with us. Never made it to Jamestown yet and the Lucy museum.

With a fascinating story, cb. They were largely hand sold. Somewhere out there (and here in GJ) is a NOS example with all the attachments in an original box with - get this, instructions for their jobbers (sales reps) including selling tips. One of the tips was to wait on the side of the road until a car broke down!! :)

OK only ONE planned stop and that one was a bust...

BUT! A TOO Estate sale (and un-advertised at that...), was a fair place to go!

Fist things (Tool boxes) I was looking at I was told after asking "Sorry those are claimed" (I think by a family member or friend...)

So I dug and dug in boxes, baskets, tubs, a wood cheat, and came up with this. The owner lifted a hunting gut rip knife that looked had made/customized, as "Not for sale" :dunno: (it was in a damn waist basket full of "stuff"... :wtf: )

So what I DID get out with were:

Some parts bin drawers with mostly junk hardware, one did have some router bits/ this makes 4 of this style bins, I have, with three different pulls, and not always the same in a bin set...

attachment.php

2 Clamps, A "Standard" and a Cincinnati, (the one with holes), Long C craftsman and Klein lineman's pliers, a GAM style nesting driver set, missing the hammer head, Some clips I've already painted orange for camping, an old canteen in a Vietnam era case, and chisel and file handles;

attachment.php

A Lufkin folding ruler, with a caliper, Sweden Grill badge, a Kiwi shoe horn (Been looking for one), and from the chest, three planes, one definitely a Stanley, (small) the big Blue one has a 5" on it, but I don't think its a bailey, and the middle one has a patent on it I need to look up...

Only thing this weekend was a final day of a 3 day estate sale.

Across the back left to right; Craftsman, Bonney, SK, MAC and SO, Front is the Plomb Empire. The entire lot was $40 for over 180 pieces which averages to .22 per item.

I decided to sleep in this morning. No good listings for today and I expected the flea to be sparse due to the threat of rain.

That middle hand plane is definitely different from any I've seen.

Hope you share what info you come up with when doing patent search.

Hi Mike,

Just got to it. Patent No 1914609 Patented June 20, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CORNELIUS J". MACALLER, OF DERBY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO ABRAHAM H. LAVIETES, OF SHELTON, CONNECTICUT CARPENTERS PLANE Application filed February 19, 1932.

https://www.google.com/patents/US1914609

And as could be expected, its for the cutter adjusting part.

Some more detailed pics for those interested:

Outlaw:

Thks for add'l pics on that hand plane and the cutter adjuster.

Found a #4 Shelton with same patent date on Ebay. On that one, it gives the number to the back of the front wood knob, while having the Shelton name to the front of the front wood knob.

On yours, I don't see any raised lettering in those areas, but both planes have the patent number in same place.

Here is the link.

I posted:

- the Westinghouse “Rectigon” Battery Charger in its own thread here.

- An unusual and antique (1,143,960, June 1915) cam and lock type die stock made by Hart Manufacturing Co in Cleveland in the Tap and Die thread here.

- Seymour Smith “Snap-Lock” pliers (another Not-Petersen Vise-Grip…) in an existing Seymour Smith thread here.

- Mack truck ball-pein hammer here.

And a little Rock Island vise in the GJ Vises thread here.

Here are some of the smalls.

View media item 76292
- Unbranded antique coping saw

- Vlchek hub wrench (2-1/8” hex and 1-7/16 open end)

- 10” GTD “Little Giant” pipe wrench, marked PAT. FEB 4 1913. Note the teeth on the back side of the static jaw, making it possible to insert the moving jaw in either direction. The 14, 18 and 24-inchers have four of these static jaw areas, so you can turn the moving jaw backwards in either direction. First seen for me. Patent 1,052,313 if anyone wants to check it out.

- The straight tail lathe dog is J.H. Williams VULCAN No. 22 (1/2”).

- The other tool holder is an Armstrong No. 1-S 5/16”

- The alligator wrench is a Kilborn & Bishop SAXON. I have a few Bonneys. This is my first K&B.

- The Babbitt scraper is a Kraeuter with a forged-in “3/29/10” on the shank.

And a 1946+ CRAFTSMAN Sliding T-Bevel with an 8” blade.

Lugz, that coping saw is actually a jewelers/watchmakers, saw. It uses very thin wire saw blades clamped between those blocks. I have a few and most are marked "Germany"

The blades are very delicate and easily broken (ask me how I know!) but for very fine work are great once you get the light touch needed. I'm gradually getting to where I can finish a cut without braking the blade...

That would fit right in with the table you recently found...

Speaking of which; did you get the vise sorted out?

Thanks for the info. And that's a great idea! I'll put it in one of the tin bottomed drawers! As for the swivel jaw taper pin: nope. Tried all the best penetrating and lockbuster oils I know of, with heat, periodic taps, etc, upside down, rightside up. Wouldn't budge. So I left it as is.

The sales yesterday were one planned estate sale ($10) which had quite a bit of assorted CM =V= metric sockets, 1/4 and 3/8 drive, as well as an old Remington Ramset for $3. And a TOO around the corner yielded several Proto combo wrenches (7/16-15/16) as well as some long Wright metrics ($15).

The other TOO was today, when we saw REI had moved and was selling fixtures. Got five wire wall racks (7 & 8ft by 2ft) with 20 shelves, 4 baskets and some hooks for $70. And got two Equipto workbenches for $30, with each having a six-drawer cabinet attached! One has bit of rust on the bottom from living next to a sink, and both could use a cleaning. Pic of cabinet is the one in rougher shape.

For the militaria collectors here. Does anyone recognize this case? I picked it up at the auction. It has an aluminum liner and is heavy duty but no other marks other than the ordinance badge.
