Vintage Craftsman Store Display Cabinet

Thought you guys might like to see my latest find.

I picked this vintage Craftsman drill, tap & die store display cabinet up today. Nice graphics and single drawer. Paint and graphics are in really nice condition with just a few minor scratches here and there. Measures 24" W x 12" D x 31" H. The top panel is flat and screwed to the bottom cabinet from the back. Came with a bunch of misc. taps, reamers and what-not.

There was small piece of wood with a managers name tag glued to the large front flat panel, but that came right off with just a tap of my hand. The glue is dry and flaking, so I think it'll clean up nicely.

Paid $40.00 which I think is a fair price. :D

I hope these two freebie planes don't lead me to a wild goose chase. The one in the front is a #6 round molding plane made by Ohio Tool Co. The one in the back looks like a Jack plane. Both are missing the blades. Again, they were free, so I'm not complaining. And now I know the difference between a Hollow and a round moulding plane and that the missing blades are called plane irons.

Also no maker's mark on the level.

Bet it is the capicitor

More likely an inline fuse going to the indoor blower. Simple fix. Also, there is a system power disconnect at the machine, if it was installed to code. Check for power downstream from the fuse, and if now power, shut down the whole system and check the continuity of the fuse. DONT pull it with power live.

Went back today and picked up a BANANA BOX full of screwdrivers, clamps and chisels. The guy stared at it for a second. Dug around a little and said $15.

No idea what’s all in here, but I figure it was worth $15.

Another trip to the thrift store as I needed a 'vintage' computer cable (VGA). The hardware aisle ends right where the cables are. How could i NOT take a peek?

Found an S-K 1/4 and 3/8 socket set. Looks complete or at least complete enough to use all the sockets. It has a spinner handle for the 1/4. The 3/8 ratchet is a 45170 Pat 2232477. I can't help but wonder if the ratchet is newer since it is shinier than the other parts like the extension, and I would think the ratchet would have the finish worn more than other parts. The ratchet has a code that looks like "88" near the retaining ring. I looked at AA and am not sure about the age. The case has a logo plate rather than a sticker so it's not super old.

I'm guessing the little SOE wrench, hex key, and 2 caps/inserts are not part of the original set.

It was $2.59 since it is today's half price color.

Can see several nice chisels that should clean up and sharpen just fine.

Several chisels, a decent set of wood handled MAC slot screwdrivers, some snap-on, some really cool bronze? 4in1 screwdrivers, lots of miscellaneous wood handled drivers, several older store brands (coast to coast and ace), and the guy seemed to be obsessed with screwdrivers with exchangeable shafts or heads. I’m going to count them up tomorrow just to get a cost per screwdriver just for fun.

The best part, my five year old helping me sort them by color, and claiming some as his own.

How about a picture of the "goods" after you have them sorted?

I can do that. There is sorting and more sorting, and more sorting to do. First by color then by brand, hopefully get somewhere on that tonight.

There were 5 of these 4in1 slots that I had never seen before that I thought were pretty cool.

Irwin heavy(wartime) and regular(???) screwdrivers.

Plomb set looks like pretty much a 4700A (basic)set set all '37 or '38 except I cant tell about the wasted spin handle, or the bar I hope fits the holes at the back of extensions(I don't know if it belongs, or is even Plomb). I'd be missing one socket, but with added 2 deeps and 2 carb sockets. DOE's are
11/16--25/32 Maybe greenish coating
1 1/16--1 1/4 heavy owners mark
1 1/4--1 7/16

Motorman, love the Craftsman drill, tap and die display! I wonder if that blank section held a tap and die set in a plastic box? What are the dimensions of the blank spot?

Waltrip88, we need PICTURES of that $100 Reed 4C!!!!

KTKawaguchi nice score on the SK set.

Ole Slewfoot, love the Plomb goodies.

It measures 10" H x 24" W.

I'm not sure what was displayed in that spot. There are two notches in the upper horizontal overhang and two holes each directly below the notches in the lower horizontal part.

I'm looking around the web to see if I can spot another one in an old Sears pic or ad, but haven't found anything yet.

Hit the final day of a 3 day estate sale. Not bad for 125 dollars.

Do you have a pic of your set? What era do you think this display is from?

Also I re-measured and it is 10-1/2" H and its 1-3/4" deep so a full set of taps and dies like yours might slide in.

Cool finds TM! Is the RAS an 8"? those are arguably one of, if not the best, RAS's made! Well worth refurbishing and getting it setup right!

Thanks Outlaw! Some google image searches looked like they had some variations of the diamond plate riveted to the lid, but none of the associated pages seemed to talk about the year of the set. So from your information, it looks like something between '32 and '58.

That's OK. It's a cool set older than I am. Now to decide what to do with it as my vehicles fit metric sockets better.

Kevin.

I went to the Canton Tx Flea Market this past weekend. Found a few goodies.

#1 best find was a Craftsman 5196 Vise. I saw it on the guy's table and I figured it would be out of my price range but I asked for a price anyway. It took every ounce of poker face in me to not show any excitement when he said $45! :pimpflash :rocker: I looked it over real good to make sure it didn't have anything wrong with it and then offered the guy $40. He took it

Other than being a bit dirty, it's in great shape. It's my first real quality vintage vise find and I'm very happy with it. Thanks GJ for teaching me what to look for.

That last digit is a 6
i-qZ9nNPn-M.jpg

At another booth I found a pair of Knipex Cable Cutters for $15. Model # is 95 12 200. The comfort grip handle on one side has a crack in it, but I still thought it was a good buy for 15 bucks since they sell for over $50 on Amazon.
i-h8gFTQ6-M.jpg

My last decent find was a complete set of Allen Keys in the original box. The box is not in great shape, but I'm a sucker for rusty stuff. I got the guy down to $10.

Great finds! that vise was a score!! I usually hit Traders village in DFW, but been wanting to go on to Canton. Think it would be worth the 4 hour drive ?

If you've never been to Canton your missing out. Go in the spring and give yourself a LOT of time.

Nice finds guys.

Chromdome- congrats on your first quality vintage vise find! Nice one. Seeing as you are a flea narket guy, I'm sure it won't be your last.

RagTop- I don't have much to add on the Viking. My first though was farm/ag. related. Looking around and seems like it may be an old fire sprinkler wrench. Pretty cool. I wonder if that is an unfinished example.

The M.H.T. Co. open end wrench is a new one to me. Had to look that up. Some of their wrenches may have been made by Lakeside Forge as they have the Lakeside logo of an L inside a Keystone. As far as the MHT CO abbreviation, there is one on the bay that I'm not sure what to make of it:

The Viking is strange wrench, I like to pick up weird stuff if its a buck. The guy I bought the MHT Co. wrench from told me it was Massey Ferguson.. before the Ferguson... not sure if hes correct on that or not. But, that was his story. It was a buck and different so in the back pack it went! I have a pretty big box of american made wrenches i throw all of them in. One day I'll have enough to cover a wall!
