This is great. Amazing how far we have come in 6 years!!

Jeff this is the 7th year of the thread! (does it make you feel old?)

I bet it makes Jeff feel more....locks....and keys too. ;)

Sorry Outlaw left that one open!

(Scurries off to stare at some ratchets)

Yeah, after all this time we've matured all the way up to discussing toddler poop.

:spit: So glad I wasn't taking a drink.

I laughed even more because Outlaw's Gerber baby fresh start avatar.

IMHO Post away. More threads to track just makes it harder.

 I really enjoy the antiques and oddity finds mixed in.

Great into and explanation of the how this works for the new year. Thanks Lugz. I'm subscribed and awaiting my first buy of the year. Already bidding on my first auction of 2018. The prizes look great! Wishing everyone a fun and prosperous year of hunting for good deals.

Well I made it to an auction today! Trying to start the year off right! I found a heavy cast iron cased clock/thermometer combo piece and a WWII signal lamp w/ it's tripod that is collapsible as it's stock.
Here is to a good 2018!

Post away, I don't think anyone has posted anything boring or inappropriate thus far... I like anything neat and / old... Telling the history of something makes it even better...

Unless you are going to go on a beanie babies spree or something...

Here is a question that I will throw out there since many of us go to auctions and sales that include much more than tools. Would it be appropriate to have another thread dedicated to non-tool/other cool finds? Or am I overthinking it and should just post away and have fun?

I know that I personally enjoy seeing all the antiques, etc. as much as the tools.

I tried to describe the somewhat loosey-goosey expanded definition of my impression of what has been acceptable or not here in the Garage Sale threads of the past in my introduction. IMHO, it has not been 'everything goes' and I'd prefer it not be, frankly, personally. When I hit my flea markets or garage/estate sales, I walk right past the antique furniture, china, silverware, coins, radios, walking sticks/canes, LP's, magazines, brica-a-brac, etc, and I'd prefer to not have to wade though all that here. I also think it sort of takes advantage of a website dedicated to garages and things that go in them. It's not etsy, etc. EDIT: But I am not replying as the Thread Host when I say that. I have no intention of being a dictatorial thread marm and hope it sort of takes care of it self in that regard. This is probably very un-PC to say, but I think we all tend to be fairly tolerant of cool old stuff when it is mechanical or military or utilitarian or nautical or scientific or 'outdoorsmanly', etc., if that makes any sense.

...a WWII signal lamp w/ it's tripod and stock that is collapsible.
THAT is the first entry in my little green book for 2018...!!! :)

A tiny vote for keeping the camping lanterns, submarine parts, and leg lamps to a minimum.

^ This! Or LP's. Or silverware. Or watches. Etc. In terms of sprees. There are entire collecting communities for things like that, and it's a little too far removed from the "Garage", again, IMO. An instrument, like that thermometer with the plot paper, is different. Last year someone posted a 1950's refrigerator. But he was putting it in his garage, and, it was just cool. (And, you can put beer inside it! :) I dunno. It's sort of one of those you-can't-describe-it-but-you-know-it-when-you-see-it things. And I agree with EOC_Jason that the marginal items have never been a real problem.

Thanks for your input, shanny. It's very helpful to hear from others. And, I think you put that very well and fairly. In years gone by, to include last year (I actually skimmed through the 2017 thread in preparing to host this year), I would say the thread has typically been about 85% Tools/Garage related and 15% Other. And those Other things were in the categories I ticked off above. That kind of ratio is okay with me and I hope it's okay with everyone else. If not, please speak up. Might as well settle this now rather than let it fester.

Hey, Lugz, thanks for reminding me of this little dab of doggerel:

TO BE RECITED IN POLITE COMPANY:

There once was a man from Nantucket
[GASP from majority of attendees- you calmly proceed]
Who kept all his cash in a bucket
His daughter, named Nan,
Eloped with a man,
And as for the bucket, Nan tuck it.

Lugz,

Exactly what I was thinking as I reading through the posts. I agree that as long as what's being posted is mostly garage/tool/man-cave related, I know I want to see the old, unusual and just plan neat vintage items that don't normally fall in that definition.

Of course, just to muddy the water, another way to think about it is that a lot of people store all kinds of **** in their garages, so in a way, anything goes! :lol_hitti That said, I will tune out and skip over anyone's 14-picture review of their killer Beanie Baby collection found in a garage.

As Outlaw said, if its never really been a problem, then no need for a ruling, until one is needed.

Not a garage sale find but a curb find. I was on my way out early this morn and this was on the curb for tomorrows garbage a few blocks from my house. I Also got 5 nice tackle boxes. There are a few good reels and the others are junk, The lanterns made me slow down real fast.

Nope! Maybe if you painted them a brighter color? :pimpflash

:lol_hitti

What does the big bad boy weigh?

Don't know, I pick up tomorrow. Won and paid for tonight. I'll have to cover up that orange and try to get off the threads. Damn near everything in the auction was painted, it was a contractor, so,I'm assuming it was to identify his tools easily.

I probably should quit buying c clamps:lol_hitti
I just love the heavy forged ones.

Is that a Loomis reel I spy in the mix? If so...YOU ****!

Makes me want to make the trip to Bennet Springs!

Welcome, Dello! And keep 'em coming. For the longest time (several years ago), the closest-to-WWII catalog available to WWII Bonney collectors was a 1941 Bonney-Gray catalog, so I will always have a fondness for Gray tools! :)

Hey, Lugz, thanks for reminding me of this little dab of doggerel...
HAHA. I've never heard that version.

BlueBomber: Thanks, and well said. Keep sanity checking me!

SUBSCRIBED!
Glad you're in, LesserSon. I have an appreciation for your selective and circumspect approach.

Having just moved from a target rich area to a not-so tool rich area I'm looking forward to the challanging new season!
May you find some honey holes this year, Rickster. They're there (I picked an old machinists' shop last year in Chester County!), just harder to find. If I am remembering you correctly, probably not filled with the NORCAL Plomb goodness you used to report, though.

I'm in for 2018. Let the suckage begin.
Good to have you, Mac.

Let's do it!!
Glad you're in for another year, jpickar.

Wishing you all a healthy, happy, and successful year!
And you, Brian. Not that you need any extra wishes with your typical hauls!

Marty, that looks suspiciously like A SWMBO's revenge! Most of the guys fishing gear, or at least what wasn't in his truck!

Nice save!

ps: The brown lantern is a 275 and it has a reputation of going FOOF! when lit. They need a slightly different light-up procedure that will minimize that...

You may be able to remove the paint from the c clamps by boiling them.
I picked up a bunch of Art Deco brass door hardware pieces that had layer upon layer of paint built up. I got a big old pot, dumped the pieces in and filled with water. Boiled them for several minutes, until I could feel the paint softening. Most of the paint peeled off, nearly fell off. As the piece I worked on cooled, the paint started hardening again. I just dumped them back in and heated them back up.
With the mass of metal of those clamps you will need to leave them in longer.
How long ? Till the paint softens.
Um... don't do it in the kitchen, or in your wifes favorite pots.

Thanks for the hint. I'll keep that in mind. No, I won't try it in the kitchen or use her pots, otherwise they'll be a huge tool sale in this area.:shocking:
I'm hoping its just a drive by painting job and maybe a wire wheel will take care of the threads. God knows I have enough bench grinders to use.:bounce:

Great find! I bought a couple of those heavy duty Armstrong clamps at a flea market that were painted silver. I put em on a shallow pan, got a mask, wire brush and acetone squirt bottle and it came right off.

Stopped by Habitat Re-Store while running errands today... Most things were ridiculously priced but I found a few gems for cheap...

$1 - 250v / 20A Hubbell plug, brand new in package.
$1 - Parts bin full of nuts and bolts and misc things!
$0.50 - 3M scuff pad
-------
$2.50 out the door... lol

For some reason all the other 3M pads were priced at $3... There were a dozen of those "L" shelf brackets (used) I wanted, no price though. Guy said $1 each and wouldn't budge. One even had the original sticker on it priced at $1.19 and I pointed that out... Didn't really need them so I left them... There is no logic at that place as to their pricing...

...got this Friday all lined up.
Happy to see you guys are in, beemer and Smoke.

Billythekid1: After you attach the photos with your browser, are you hitting the [Close this window] button at the bottom?

EDIT: Can someone who uses a phone to post please help Billy out? I don't, and I don't know anything about posting or attaching pics with a phone.

$1 - Parts bin full of nuts and bolts and misc things!
I have one exactly like that and I use it for my ignition wrench sets collection. The little plastic trays are the perfect size for ignition or electrical wrenches, and the number of trays is just about how many different brands/model sets I have going! :)

What's funny, if you look at the top-left corner of the picture, you can just barely see an identical one in the background! lol... So now I have a matching pair, but this new one is much much nicer condition (almost like-new).
