hi all, yesterday afternoon an ad came up on craigs list that looked interesting, poster stated he was selling all of his tools and moving to florida. he listed a bunch of different brand tools, weed whackers, blowers and chainsaw's (didn't mention brands) in the ad. gave him a call and asked about the yard stuff, not what i was looking for. ask if he had any old tool box's, he said "i have several and they're full of tools", asked if he was available? he said all day. jumped in the car, i was about 10mins. away. the tool boxes were plastic carry boxes with alot of stuff i didn't need. he let me sort through the boxes and take what i wanted, while i was going through things he asked if i had any interest in a vise? he had 3, i took the big rusty 1. there was probably more but this is what i came away with. not pictured, power trim edger runs good. 50 for the edger 20 for the tools.

That’s a great haul.. the Wilton and speeder Craftsman ratchet and old Snap-On? Great score!

LUG:..maybe some of the tool guys in your area are waiting for you to set up a booth cause you've bought all the old tools.
Have you been talking to the CINC HOUSE?!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Definitely not a score, but I'm glad I didn't come home empty-handed...

See thumbnail 1.

All the sockets are either Long C Craftsman (H) or NONE BETTER pieces, all chrome-plated. Mainly picked up for trade fodder - and also to show Outlaw that there is chrome-plated Long C out there. The uni joint is a Williams.

The round-nose chain pliers are interesting. Marked 'ELLIOT-LUCAS CANNOCK ENGLAND' in a circle around the words 'ELECT' and 'HIGH TENSILE'. A pair of these type pliers were in early war GMTK's, so I didn't expect them to be made in England when I picked them up. Well-built, smooth action, and a precise closure.

As a jeeper, I was tempted by a 'Jeepers Creeper' creeper, but it's too modern for me. See thumbnail 2.

The vintage WHITE ROSE gas pump topper turned out to be a repro. I don't have the kind of smack those vintage gas globes go for anyway, just took the pic for fun. See thumbnail 3.

I like the brick a brack or shelf beautifiers you found. are you able to bring those inside the house?

Yea I hear ya'll on the lack of sales so far, I went to one this recent Saturday and I walked away with nothing in my hand. Even though I had to use 4x4 to get to the house since the road was a hilly road with 5" snow still on the road. Only a hand full of people made it to the sale and only three of us could actually drive on the road, the others parked away from the house and walked to the sale.

Of course it was an estate business and was priced way too high. When you see toilet paper going for $1 a roll you know you messed up and went to the wrong sale. Also listed a tool chest and when I got there, there was no tool chest to be found and barely any tools.

Of course! I am the king of my castle!

Translation: My house was built in 1893. It has a brick foundation, an unfinished basement with a hard dirt floor that the women (CINC HOUSE + 2 daughters) find "scary," at best, and nobody but me and my sons (I have 3) have ever set foot in it. And I still have to use the BILCO doors I installed on the side to sneak stuff down there...

Yikes. Nothing reduces me to a stuttering pile of flesh more than this question: "What's that thing for?"

No, seriously, she knows I have tools going out, too, but the big fat wad of cash I like to hand her every once in awhile with my best Cheshire cat 'I told you I was running in the black' grin on my face never seems to have the desired impact!

Btw, in three months we'll have 1 left in the nest.

I'll bet she realizes that, of all the vices on which you could spend money, tools are probably the least objectionable. But she might not admit it. ;)

Lugs. I'm intrigued by you calling those "round-nose chain pliers" What were they used for by the military?

I've always known them as wire forming pliers and they are great for making the ring needed on house wire for under the screw heads.

Some great scores in the last couple days, Don, Tin and CB! Well done!

I tried to pick up a Snap-On box and tools (brand/quality UNK) off FB marketplace, but the seller wouldn't respond to my message. Oh well, the box was BEAT and would have been another project I don't need.

I got some smalls this morning, but very little of note. Will post a pic after my camera batteries recharge.

Of course. She'd never give me the satisfaction. Without getting maudlin here, these are the funny endearing forms some healthy marriages take after 35 years!

What were they used for by the military ?
Same thing. Wire forming. There was one in every GMTK through 1943, when they switched to more of a needle nose. Still the same purpose. Same set had dykes, slip joint, linemans, and water pump.

The estate sale gods were smiling on me today. My wife and I went to a sale in Danville, CA this morning. I wanted to be there at the very beginning because I had seen a couple of likely looking boxes in the sale photos. We were a little late but fortunately didn't miss out on the treasures. The attached pictures show the lightly used and complete Plomb 3/8" and S-K 1/4" drive sets.
More pictures to follow.

More pictures of the other tools. The first is some small SO, the next are Diamond items. Next are a pair of Crescent round nose pliers that Lugz mentioned above. Dunlap stubby is next, Duro dykes and Boker lineman's pliers and the Craftsman tools. The last picture is an oiler I picked up to amuse the WW2 guys even though it's from the '60s.

Don: great tools!!

Swing: cool stuff. maybe you should ORGANIZE a midwest winter swap meet like i'm trying to do up here in the PNW? some of your guys down there have some pretty awesome stuff just sitting out alongside their barns and i'm guessing you might have some to to trade or sell?

ALL: I found another government steel desk. yep these were built like tanks and not easy to move around, but i had a spot for it so it's home after a couple hour drive in the rain. traffic was good and the bench is in great shape under all the grey paint and surface rust that i'm going to remove this summer.

hope you all have a great weekend!

I am finally posting my first purchases of the year!
Last weekend my daughter and I had stopped at three Bradford County junque shops en route to visit my parents, and came out empty. It was -11°F the next morning, so I did some ice fishing with my dad, catching mostly bluegills, while my mom and daughter tried to unravel the mysteries of my grandmother’s cookie recipe (the ingredients are listed, but the technique remains hotly debated).
After work today, I swung by the ATM and paid $10 to enter AutoMania at the Allentown Fairgrounds. I’ve been before, so I had a good idea what to expect. Auto parts, whole restored autos, collectible signs, cans, calendars, tools, etc. Filled my eyes, then spent a pleasant hour scrounging through a table of junk tools. Finally emerged with a PH8 Bonney ball pein with split handle, a Bonney CV 1232A (1-1/32”) 30° service wrench, Cman 1/4dr sliding handle, and two 1” Snappy 1/2dr 6pt sockets (one SO overstrike and the other E code war era). There was so much more, though...Plomb, Lectrolite, Crecent, SK, etc. I even spotted half a Snell wrench. I was sorely tempted to hand over $10 for a pristine chrome Bonney CV-script 1/2dr extension, but thought I should husband my funds for tomorrow.
Tomorrow the wife and I are heading out early to check out Jacktown - Blue Mountain Antique Gas & Steam Engine Association Snow Show. I will report my findings (if any) afterward.

Thanks, guys. I had been halfheartedly working on a 3/8" drive Plomb set but I guess the pressure is off now.

Ya think!? The decal on that Plomb set might be in the best condition of any Plomb decal I have ever seen. And on top of that, it's for a Challenger set! We were just talking about them and how old they were, on another thread, and dating them, with the help of Carla, who has a very early set. Thread linked here. Post #8 and down.

The last picture is an oiler I picked up to amuse the WW2 guys even though it's from the '60s.
Ack! Daisies! Seriously, though, did you notice the mfgr's marking? I didn't know PLEWS and GEM merged at some point?!

a PH8 Bonney ball pein with split handle
You're on the board for 2018, LS! And it look like you found a great candidate for some 20 gauge wire whipping! :) I will gladly fix it for you in exchange for the very next Bonney -ZENEL- wrench set roll-up you find! :)

I managed to both find and sneak out to an estate sale today. Pretty picked over (they have had Estate sales before...)

Tools were almost non-existent, But I DID mange some scraps...

A pair of solid brass hooks, the two DOE's are Penens old school switch a Silver "pot", the square shot glass is marked Jack Daniels, I hoped the glass stopper would fit my big change jug (glass water bottle), the old glass jar that will hold stuff on my small inside workbench, a geode slice, and the odd connector with the screw cap looks like it fits a car bulb? Five Bucks all...

Tomorrow doesn't look promising. There is one estate sale outside my normal range south of me, and a garage sale about the same distance to the north... :willy_nil Now, how desperate am I?...

So, I was off today and have to work the weekend when it is finally going to be in the 60-70s again after being in the single digits this week. I did find one sale today. there were tons of stuff and some tools! I picked out the few things of interest to me and made a pile. Once done, the guy gives me a price of $12. didn't argue. He throws it all in a box and said you can have whatever else that is in the box. It was a ziplock containing a small torch. Its all in German I think. but ill get it figured out when I have time to mess with it. Found a neat Valve tool, never seen one before.

Bonney 15/16 combo wrench
Grind Off (SnapOn ?) 1 combo

Apex philips bit

Duro- Chrome Valve Tool, Pat 1936

Utility brand ratcheting screwdriver

4 Knu-Vise welding clamps

6 HD C clamps with 3/8 marking and a double diamond mark

Pouch of WIZARD hex set

The Torch is a German brand I think. Look like never used. fuel came with it.

Not bad day, just enough to get my picking urges calmed down for another week or so,.

RT, do the bitty C clamps have threaded "ports" on them? Those look a lot like hanger clamps for claming to things like I beams, and hanging some All thread that holds up ducting or pipe.

swing, cool clock, is it lighted? good score on the new key hanger.

Thanks! Not lighted unfortunately. If it was it would have been much more than the price I gave. Some of this gas/oil stuff gets stupid where price is concerned. Last week I paid $150 for 2 Harley Davidson spark plugs that were NOS from '47.

Drivesitfar

I wish I could figure out how to set something like that up. But, I'd probably put "I don't want to sell it" prices on everything if I had a booth.

D42 got a a lot of nice wrinkle paint there, that SK set it very nice too.

Been a bit of a wet spell induced dry spell here, but i busted out of it today.

Who can resist a $10 Craigslist 'table vice' that says Craftsman and has little arrows on it.
It's not as nice as Macduf's but I have had my eye out for one ever since I found a matching little anvil. I'll throw it at the electrolysis tank and see what shakes out. With some luck it might be good enough to just BLO coat. The guy I got it from was clearing stuff to make room for a big remodel project. this gentleman was at least of retirement age, and said it was his father's vise. I asked about other tools, and he had some he hadn't decided to sell. His stepfathers bag of wood planes, the kind that are a carved block of wood that holds a blade. Cool, several different types in varying condition. None appeared commercially built/branded. I don't know much about those beside the shape they cut. In my eyes, the prize of the bag was this brace, I think the pattern is called a 'Sheffield brace'. I found some Marples examples that look to be a close match in many respects, but I thought I'd see what you guys think. Oddly, it doesn't have a bit retainer, making it too cheap or old to have one? The single screws at the fat end of the side plates also seems to be a clue. Operationally its perfect, and I think under the dust, the wood is too. Didn't see any makers marks, but we were in a basement with most of the lights ripped out. I told him I'd see what I can puzzle out about it, I guess these went out of style pretty fast after the Americans started making metal ones.

Finally able to post pics of yesterday's gathering.

3x Armstrong 21-505 1.5" Impact sockets, 3/4" dr
Nicholson (partial) needle file set
Camco TL-29 (has bakelite or plastic scales, so not too old)
Phillips No. 2 stubby 1-1/8" blade
4.5" flat tip
Unmarked (Irwin or Federal) heavy duty screwdriver. Grips held on w/tape, so will likely remove and attempt to replace the nail heads
WHB CHROM-VANADIUM Pat. Germany water pump pliers. OOPS!

Looked up the patents on the stubby 2046837 and 2046840. Nothing terribly exciting, but I don't remember seeing patents on a screwdriver shank before. Guess the driver is older than I first thought, since the MFR took time to mark the shank:
