There are three things you don't do: take another man's tree stand, wade upstream into another man's fishing hole, and go to another man's flea market. :)

Of course we're just teasing each other, but that really is the rule. I see GJ'ers in overlapping areas (e.g., you Pacific NW'erners), and I really don't know how you do it. EDIT: Maybe I'm just not congenial enough. :)

The trick is to go with someone you like, or doesn't collect the same as you. Otherwise, if your lucky, it only ends with bruises.

Outlaw - Damn, I may just cry.
Screw that, it's a $20 Peter Wright, I AM going to cry !

The **** is strong with this one.... Extremely jealous, you did excellent!

He starts with the stuff in my hands/Arms and starts with the Ammo box and I'm bracing myself... He says $2 for the box, mumble 5 for something mumbles some more and says "How about $15 for all this stuff in your hands, and, Oh, $20 for the anvil? and Mmmm ten for the Dutch oven? So $45?

I Gulp, I try to remain Calm. I DO NOT EVEN TRY TO NEGOTIATE! :bounce::beer::3gears:

Outlaw: so the thinking is that if you practice enough you get LUCKY MORE OFTEN at anything you do and YOU SIR GET A GOLD STAR. VERY WELL DONE!!!

yep not only a nice little size PW anvil in great shape for pennies, but other quality stuff too. I hope you said THANK YOU

we don't often get to drive home with that big of a smile and I bet it might take a few hours or days for that one to wear off.

JasonEOC: check out my new ORGANIZING THREAD cause I just posted the Reed 4c you restored. i've moved it for the last time until i build a stand for it and amazingly the 2 or 3 coats of BLO you put on it only needed a SG dust wipe down. thanks again!!

yep i've got storage units that at times would qualify for the stupid horder's show hence me GETTING ORGANIZED.

hard thing about ORGANIZING is you have to SELL SOMETHING and unless it's to a GJ members gives me the willies when it comes to my stuff.

the link to my new thread is in my sig line if you want to post and take credit for restoring my 4c and also maybe hop on the train while i GET ORGANIZED cause it might be an adventure.

LUG: great cabinet and stuff. YEP i used to make 600 mile day trips through 2 states to grab some cool stuff, but i need a younger body or a more comfortable car/truck now so i just smile when the other PNW guys post stuff i might have seen first.

cheers and keep that sidearm holstered unless your life or your family's life is in danger.

Costco is one of the stores in one town that has a sign with no guns and there are metal detectors at most all ballgames here.

I DO NOT EVEN TRY TO NEGOTIATE!
I love those moments.

I'd like an anvil for my shop but around here I think they're all made of gold.
+1 and well put!

The trick is to go with someone you like, or doesn't collect the same as you. Otherwise, if your lucky, it only ends with bruises.
In a momentary lapse of sanity and killer instinct, I made the mistake of revealing my flea market locations to a new guy on a WWII tools board I frequent. Fellow NJ guy, and he flattered his way into my orbit, and I kind of took him under my wing so to speak. The guy lives an hour away, and he's a noob. How bad could it get? I'm thinking to myself. He not only starts showing up every freaking weekend, but he's beating me to my own spots. He's beating the dawn there! Now, I having nothing against initiative, but have some common sense and some manners. You didn't know about these places until I told you, I let you in on my little secret, and you try to beat me to my own places? Walking around with a flashlight as vendors are setting up? And then not only act like there's nothing wrong when I get there, but have the gall to show me all the stuff you found that I would be finding if I hadn't let you in on my little secret?!

Let's just say things went from friendly to cold to we don't talk much to he doesn't come around anymore.

The **** is strong with this one....
 Yoda.

lug, haven't seen a set that complete since the early 80's. Nice score.l
If you're referring to the mess kit, I left that behind, Bill. Guy wanted $75. I offered $35, knowing it was a low-ball, knowing he probably wouldn't take it, and he didn't. I probably could've got it for $50, but I didn't want it that bad. It's outside my niche, both in era and category. I like these opportunities of self-restraint to remind myself I have limits. Those moments help me rationalize the times I go a little crazy! :lol Sorry for the confusion.

METRIC DBE and DOE sets! an SAE set of DBE's, that Ratchet:

Outlaw, what are the sizes for the metric DBE set?

I have a similar set. It came from Sears without 16/18 which I kind of miss...

Nice haul Outlaw. You too Lugz. I'd like an anvil for my shop but around here I think they're all made of gold. At least I'm basing that on what people are asking for them.
I know the feeling....last auction I went to that had a anvil I think it was about 150lb....went for about 800.....for the cheap of i want to beat on anything I have two pieces of railroad iron one small and one larger

No Honor Among thieves (or treasure hunters...)

around here its first come, first served...

And today I was first! :see:

You know that saying that ends with: Good things will come? This is more like what I was waiting for!

:rocker::rocker::rocker::rocker::rocker:

ONE Semi Estate/Moving Sale (Mom moving into an apartment, Dad is apparently gone...), and that was ALL today, but it was enough! I heard later that she had lived in the house since new (50's? Early 60's?)

I pull up and it looks decent from the street. Ammo box, some camping the ad mentioned tools -Hope that's not the barrel of yard tools..

Ammo Box:

attachment.php

So I scoop the Ammo box and look over the camp gear. there is a 12" dutch oven with legs and brimmed lid. Nice "I'll Be back"... (And I was) There was a green Coleman 220 dual mantle lantern (By far the most common lantern out there) but I have more than enough and it didn't have anything extra like a mantle safe, or reflector to bother with it.

attachment.php

I wander into the garage, and ask if the stuff on the small work bench is for sale. "Mom" starts telling me the bench is for sale, and I clarify, and she says something about "I haven been through the tools yet..." my heart drops; then she starts talking about the organised box and she wanted the picture hanger hooks out of that at least, and I feel relief! The son comes over and I assure them both if I pick anything they still want to keep, that won't be an issue, and I'm given free rein! :bounce:

I find pouches of Craftsman tools (everything was -V-) , a Craftsman 3/8 swivel head ratchet with the Star Trek" switch... It was good pickings!

METRIC DBE and DOE sets! an SAE set of DBE's, that Ratchet:

attachment.php

SAE WARDS Master Quality DOE tool role, and that small Craftsman box marked "Metric"...

I'm thinking Its got to be like Allen wrenches...

attachment.php

I open it an my jaw nearly dropped! It is a complete pristine 1/4" Metric drive set! A second Husky ratchet, and the oddball wrench was in there. The Crewline combo came out of the DOE SAE pouch. That was the ONLY combo in the garage! I guess he wasn't a believer...

attachment.php

More odds and ends:
3" Aluminum clamps! (I love aluminum clamps almost better than the heavy forged, as I often can't have extra weight on many clamp up jobs..)
An awl; not sure of brand, No. H1202
Half full tin of cotter pins, (cool lid! see second pic)
A NICE smaller hand drill with rosewood handles - NOT A MAKERS MARK TO BE SEEN! But I'm sure its good quality, so maybe made for a hardware store chain? :dunno:

attachment.php

attachment.php

Not Done! Wait for it!
Different # but the awl looks like my Stanley 75cd1e34ed629cd52738a9490582f12c.jpg

Man, Lugz, that is a tough break, and I see how the experience would embitter a fella. But...
I don’t feel territorial about the places I frequent. If like-minded collectors were mobbing my local spots, I’d expect to see more, not less, items. My idea is, the more demand for the things I want, the more vendors will dig them up and bring them to market. I realize this drives prices up, but the alternative is the stuff sits unvalued in attics, cellars & garages; or worse - the landfill!

Doesn't work that way on this side of the Delaware, LS. There's no demand. There's 350 tables of people selling old stuff, often grandma's and grandpa's, and dozens of house liquidators with trailers, like Estate Sale central, on the dirt outskirts on the way in and out. What shows up, shows up, and in an industrial state, what shows up is often good, and sometimes rare. There are other toolhounds, but mainly chrome guys, no other vintage guys. So I am used to first dibs and want to keep it that way! But, thanks for sharing your more welcoming attitude. I will send all the poachers to Pennsylvania!!

Was on a working trip up to Seattle this weekend and next weekend I will be driving across country with my son (Sacramento to Philly) so, I was in an antique store for work and spotted this at a very nice price:

It's my birthday on Tuesday, so I splurged. $250 out the door. It was made from '43 to '48. I am pretty happy!

I have not posted sale finds in a while, so here goes. First two are a flea market trip last fall. Couple of SKs, couple of taiwan John Deeres, a Herbrand to go in my Bonney set, a Bell Systems Proto, a Benchtop 1/4 ratchet with a really rough action, and some no-name probably Asian combos. These pics are after cleaning up in Evaporust. $13 for all of it.

Pic 3 is some thrift shop hunting in Hagerstown, MD after Christmas. 5 SK Wayne combos, DBE's by Tru-Fit, Cen Tech and Murphy's Century(?), 1 Indestro Super, A Blue Line combo and a Tru-Test DOE. My wife actually picked these up when she saw the SK-Wayne logo and got them all for $9!

Last two pics are a couple of oil cans, a no-name copper colored one from a nephew, and a "2 Spezial Pressol" that I found in an antique store. Probably overpaid at $30, but it is really cool!

The search is half the fun, but finding neat stuff is great!

and the final piece! I have a double handful and i'm looking for the son to get prices, and see an anvil on the ground.

attachment.php

i missed it?? :wtf: Seriously! I walked past it! :dunno: (it was that kind of sale enough good stuff to keep you distracted, even if you were not really interested....)

so i get the son's attention and tell him this stuff in my hands, (yes, i had all of the "loose stuff" somehow...) plus i point to the anvil and the dutch oven.

I said "sure, as long as you are ok with a fifty?" he was i dug that out of the back of my wallet, and paid up!

I carry the loose stuff to the rig, and open the back up, and go back for the anvil, and he even helps by bringing the dutch oven commenting "you must like old stuff..." :see:

When i pick up the anvil i look over the top and my heart pounds!

I see this:

attachment.php

flipped over and enhanced for those that cant stand to read upside down!

attachment.php

it'a a peter wright, and its 44 lbs, and its not in bad shape at all! Twenty bucks! :bounce: :rocker: :bounce: :rocker: :bounce: :rocker:

attachment.php

this one may motivate me to setup the new, larger, e-tank! I'm thinking blo after the rust is gone...

All in all a great day! :rocker::rocker::rocker::rocker::rocker:

I practically had the shakes coming home, not sure if it was excitement, or lack of breakfast, but it has been a while for a good score!

Really nice pickups guys! Today I managed to get to an estate sale, I bought a nice size box of misc. sandpaper for $2. No tools, or at least none by the time I got there.

My exercised-some-restraint and LEFT IT BEHIND item is this KW-to-Vietnam era field kitchen kit.

Lugz -
That is an officer's mess set. Depending upon the type of unit (usually support ones) officers got to eat off the plates instead of a mess kit. Instead of the individual hauling the kit this chest went with the kitchen.

Sadly the seller was planning on you to negotiate and would have taken $35:lol_hitti
Just kidding,serious envy ,great find....You ****!!!

I did go to an estate sale Saturday and after sifting through incomplete allen wrench sets and $10 craftsman ratchets(nothing special) I actually left a sale without buying anything.I was a weird feeling to actually walk away empty handed.Later that day while walking the dogs I found $1 bill laying on the sidewalk.Could be the snowflake that starts the avalanche ...TBC

Had a decent day today at my local pawn shop. Got this for $4.30

The oil filter wrench is a cornwell, and the feeler gauges are Kastar brand. made in usa. never heard of them

Bought the ratchet because i’ve seen people collecting them on this site? it’s a craftsman -V- model no. 44975

The two stanley box cutters are made in usa also.

Lastly a cheap little task force vise grip. Can never have too many!

Kastar/Lang makes all sorts of stuff. Their thread restorer set and snap ring pliers seem to be popular on this site.
