Hit up a guy on CL today with an ad for "Old tools." I wasn't expecting much but I gave it a shot. I definitely didn't hit a home run but I'd say I did alright. Got all of this for $20. Guy said to make him an offer and he said yes before I even got the word "twe" out of my mouth. Probably could have given him less but oh well.

Bonney 1/2" ratchet, Penen's ratchet, 2 Blue Point Supreme DOE wrenches, C-man pliers (look like some 90's gimmick), Armstrong ignition wrench, Snap-On flat tip screwdriver, Kreauter pliers (never heard of this brand), a Vise Grip (never have enough of these), and an unknown model BMW emblem. The guy said it was from a car I think it is from a motorcycle. It's plastic. Any ideas?

Kraeuter pliers are from an old company known for it's quality pliers. Bought by Dresser/S-K in the 1960's and sockets, ratchets, screwdrivers and wrenches were S-K made with slight differences. Ended in the 1970's.

That Vise Grip looks early, I don't see a release lever.

The BMW emblem is probably aftermarket, should be blue and white, not red and white in the roundel. Anything on the back?

The only thing on the back was double sided tape with a partial 3M logo paper on it. Half was missing and the tape was ****.

I saw the bag of 9V clips out of the corner of my eye and it instantly brought back memories of buying those at Radio Shack many years ago! Then I saw the Radio Shack price tag on it!!! Ah, good times.
Me too! Remember the battery of the month club?

Some Ford items.

-what I believe is a Model T brass hubcap
- Fairmont wrench with several Ford script stamps on the head, not sure if it can be seen in the pics
-another Fairmount, thought it had markings but no
-unusual single end stamped “For Standard Ford Spark Plugs”

As a lifelong BMW rider I'm pretty damn sure that is aftermarket. The wings are Bentley and the logo is the wrong color.

Not a whole lot going on locally this weekend- I only had one estate sale on my list, and I showed up to discover that the basement and garage items would be sold "at the next sale"..... So since I was already in the car (parked) I figured I'd pull out the phone and search Craigslist by distance and see what else was out there. I found a relatively close sale just over the state line- no photos, but what the hell- I'd take a drive. Got there an hour after the posted start, but this one was a real digger. The kind of sale with boxes on top of boxes in a dark smelly barn with waaaay too much rodent involvement. The guy running the sale must do house cleanouts and flea markets- as folks checked out I kept hearing "oh that's not for sale, I was saving that..."-- we were picking his cleanouts for him.:headscrat:
So I figured I can play that game too- for each handful of tools I wanted I added a handful of sacrificial junk. With the pile of vintage Craftsman ratchets I added in a couple of Home Depot Husky socket sets. Find Proto and Willams adjustables? Add some DeWalt cordless tools. It was sort of a pain, but I was there already and didn't want the weekend to be a bust.;)
After much haggling and taking things out of my pile I did ok. Nine Craftsman ratchets, a Blue Point air ratchet, old Sears plastic 1/4 socket box. Proto and Williams adjustables, a couple of Snap on screwdrivers, Craftsman nut drivers. Next photo are the wrenches I managed to pry away- a bunch of ignition wrenches, various Craftsman combinations, Barcalo, None Better, SK, Blackhawk and a Par-X.
The only thing I'm bummed about leaving behind was a good sized bucket full of old but brand new churchkeys. Each one was unmarked with the canopener at one end, bottle opener at the other. For a moment I thought I had solved my Christmas gift problems for the next decade! Guy wanted a hundred bucks for the bucket- "they sell for $5 each at the flea..." Oh well.

Went to an auction this weekend that had some tools. In a box that had household items I spotted this tool. I don't know what it is and asked several people but no one seemed to know what it is. I didn't buy the box but spoke with the individual that did purchase it. He had no interest in it, he buys mainly for scrap, and he gave it to me.

Does anyone know what this is? The base which is not magnetic says "Shaughnessy Tool Co. New York City Pat'd4-11-16". The rods have very sharp points. I could not find any information using Google.

It is an interesting item, but I have no idea what it is.

I have no idea, but I would put it on the grill and stick some meat to it for smoking or cooking. Thats my first thought.

There were a handful of sales I really wanted to hit this past weekend, but they were all spread out far in different directions, and I had other responsibilities to take care of, so it just wasn't meant to be...

Always next weekend...

Hah! Nicely done! That’s one of my old estate sale tactics. Put back some of the nicer stuff...and eventually narrow it down to what you want. I had to play that game many times with this one tool guy, “What if I just put this back?”, “Oh I really didn’t want this”, “This one’s not part of the set, so ho much without it?”. It helps bring people to their senses sometimes.

I also love those guys at sales who fluff up a bunch of **** with something they know people will want. Example, a Williams ratchet and extension with a bunch of **** rubberbanded to it. There’s one guy notorious for stuff like that, trying to sell the bad with the good. Sorry, I’m not paying to haul home tools I don’t want that don’t even go together. They need to sell the junk cheap and it will move.

Looks exactly like the the Blue-point and or Williams ratchet.

Yeah similar look. This set was made by Williams (SO) in USA. I’m not sure the exact age, never went to Lowes back then. I assume it came before the Taiwan Williams/BP.

This ratchet mechanism was also used in the USA Bahco and Harley Davidson, although the handles were different.

The Taiwan mech. was used as many brands I believe, including Harley also. Case IH, Westward, who knows what else.

I might call that a basic surface gage. Used for marking/scribing parts.

Pretty sure the emblem is aftermarket. You can buy one off ebay with no logo in it and I did a quick search and saw the identical wings listed as hood ornament with bently, Mercedes and bmw as well.

Some goodies from recent estate sales:

Nice Snap-On KRA 125 box that is now my desktop toolbox!

Never came across these Zippo tape measures before but it turns out they are pretty common on ebay.

A trench art ashtray made from old artillery round.

A ridiculously complex adjustable wrench that consists of at least 15 machined parts that appropriately never became as popular as the common Crescent wrench.

Didn't realize until later that this is a modified Plomb 130 caulking tool. Forged into some sort of hanger. Much have been a thing back then as there were a few of these on Worthpoint.

Lugz, what do you make of this little screwdriver? Also part of yesterday’s haul. Looks like stock # 41 S 1339.

Interesting. Almost like a cabinet (or electrician's) screwdriver, with no flare at the tip so it can fit into recesses. But a short shank. And not a very substantial ferrule. I am guessing jeweler's.

It's not in the higher echelon common or specialists' tool-sets. I have some other references at work. I'll look it up tomorrow.

That handle looks like some ice picks that I have. Is the shank round? Maybe it's a conversion.

Visiting my brother in Detroit over the weekend and spent a couple of mornings hitting several estate sales. Managed to pick up a couple of 1/4 dr Snap-on ratchets, they're froze up right now but I've got them soaking. Nice Cman 1/4dr RHFT and and old time Cman 1/4dr ratchet in good working order. Also a couple of 1/4dr Snap-on sockets, a super wide gigantic roll of electrical tape, Cman voltage probe, Cman Pro adj pliers and a small Zippo lighter.

I have one of those adjustables! It seems to work decently, however, it needs to be kept in a nice clean environment, so It landed in SWMBO's little tool box.... I'd use something dry like graphite to lube it if needed...

Yes, clean and well lubed!

I took it apart and it took quite a few tries to get it back together correctly.

High component costs + high assembly costs = commercial loser!

Yes it is round. I think you may be right. Funny, I asked the vendor if it was a screwdriver because my first thought too was ice pick handle. Someone could have easily ground the blade, it isn’t very good. The number is the only marking btw. Oh well, fooled me.

The S in the FSN likely means that it is actually a screwdriver. That letter indicates which type of tool it is. Wrenches are 41-W-**** for example and a chisel would be 41-C-****. The tool below is a 41-G-350 spark plug gauge.

What Don said. The FSN's are phonetic, and that sure looks like a cabinet tip screwdriver tip to me. What is the length of just the shank from the tip of the blade to the ferrule?

(EDIT: The Walden drag link bits that appeared in my mailbox yesterday are 41-B-647 and 41-B-649 to go with the 41-B-648 I already had! :))

Snagged this Shelton Versatool stamped with "John Deere Parts Distribution Warehouse" the other day on Eprey. It didn't sell, so a message to the seller with an offer and it was mine! Neat little ****** if I do say so.

XJ, I have several of those ratcheting drivers. they made them in several flavors of tip sets too. Handy in the right place. I put one in my Coleman tool/parts kit.

Thanks, yes I read that they evolved over the years from the 50's to the 70's. They were commonly stamped with company names and used for giveaways and promos and such. But not many were stamped with Deere. This one will lead an easy life in a display case from now on. My father has a birthday coming up. ;)

I wonder if that screwdriver had a longer shank at one point and was shortened?
