Left a few bids at the local auction last night not thinking I would get anything, and to my amazement I now own a Craftsman drill press! $80 high bid plus buyers premium and tax puts me at $100 for this beast. Missing one feed handle, but otherwise looks to be in fantastic shape.

Sorry I've missed all the fun on this thread, but that doesn't mean I've been idle.

On Wednesday, Smokeshow69 sent me a text with a photo of a Craftsman 1/4" drive, BE socket set, complete with the rare flex shaft spinner, and asks me if I think it's worth $20. I respond with "WTF" and ask for a link. I immediately jumped on eBay and found nothing. Then I got on CL and couldn't find the ad he claimed to have seen, but I found an ad with another socket set for $20, AND, it has a Craftsman flex spinner! I texted the seller and set up a meeting the next day. In the mean time, Smokeshow tells me he was just playing a joke on me. Hahaha

So I meet with the seller and learn that he's selling his dad's tools (who is 93 and just moved into assisted living). The guy was a tool nut, and kept everything immaculate.

So I come home with a car load of stuff and send tell Smokeshow about my find. Who has the last laugh, now, Smoke?

These are a couple quick pix I took with my phone. Much more to come.

P & C 100 socket set, with s-k ratchet, Craftsman =V= sockets (6 & 12 pt), and flex shaft spinner. $20.

Atlas/Craftsman XY table and unidentified vise, $100 (it was with a Craftsman King Seeley DP that was spoken for, but I made an offer on the table anyways, which they accepted!)

Ran errands, stopped at a Sears & got a heavy-duty ball-bearing 2-drawer middle chest for $50, new, not returned.

Also stopped at a yard sale in an expensive neighborhood, saw a Milwaukee hand power bandsaw, he'd just sold it. He did give me a Dewalt side grinder, free. So yesterday I got a free Craftsman 5 drawer/one-door workbench, free; today, the Dewalt 7-1/2 amp side grinder, free. And free is always good.

I found the second of the two boxes...Mostly complete, a couple sockets are newer Williams, extra DBE's and the flex is newer, but you rarely see it this complete when it is this old.

Very nice boxed set! Pre-1947 label, if you didn't already know it. I have a 99% complete Williams Bantam Set No. 6 that needs a smaller box with that style label.

Went to my first Friday estate sale yesterday. Advertised as extremely tool heavy. It was only 3 miles from work, so I swung by at lunch. Sale was supposed to start at 5 with numbers being handed out at 3:30. Lady says, "Well, you're here now, so have a number." Number two. Nice! Bail on work a bit early and head over. They weren't lying. This place was crowntop heaven. Mostly woodworking which isn't my thing, but still managed to score some automotive stuff, most of which had seen little to no use.

All CM US with the exception of the roller, plumbob, hydrometer, and one retrieval tool. The push drill had all the bits in the handle.


CM and Proto drivers, reamer and screw starter, complete and unused Kromedge tap n die set, 100' Lufkin, etc.


Speeder and 3/8 extension are SO, Petersen Grips, etc.


Also scored this well loved SO KRA250 at the flea this morning for $10. I thought about restoring it, but its condition matches my old truck and fits perfectly behind the seat, so that's where it lives now.

Found some German wrenches, one Kraeuter, wood handled screwdrivers, bike wrench, chisel, and a nice Huot drill index with some bits at the ReStore for $8. Can't figure out their prices lately, the Asian tools are a buck or two and the German and US tools are a quarter. Also picked up a US Army galvanometer at a local antique store for $20, and a box of hardware, antique multi-tool and misc at another store for $5.

If you paid $100 for the 100 series drill press with the vise, you **** ! That will clean up very nice with minimal effort .

Hex, they make these boxes in a 1/2 depth version as well if that meets your needs.

Riley, that has made my search for the right sandpaper a thing of the past, and I have it separated by grit. so I know where to look and if I'm out. It beats the "stack" method I used to use all to heck, and is far less space than the multi bin sandpaper storage I've seen in wood working shops!

Here’s my haul from this morning. Found a great garage sale just down the road. Had a TON of Snap On and Matco wrenches as well as a few Sk, Wright, Proto and Craftsman... all USA.

Got the Snap On case with all the sockets for $1. The 15 sockets on the left are good vintage USA made sockets. The other piles are Japanese (center) and Taiwan (right).

Paid $23 for the lot. Could have spent a couple hundred more but I showed restraint

Status on those "[S.R.]" marked sockets is the same. Made by Plomb in the mid- to late-1940's, customer unknown, but definitively not Sturtevant-Richmont, a formerly popular but erroneous conclusion.

jvlyons99205, I have a Hulot drill index like that I bought new >40 years ago. Still providing good service. You got an interesting haul. What are you planning, save pieces to fill-in your chosen sets, and sell the rest? I assume that's what most of the tool sales people do from here.

I found out why the DeWalt DW420 4-1/2" side grinder was free, it didn't power up (fair practice disclosure: the garage sale homeowner did reveal to me, "it doesn't work, you can have it for free, if you want it.") I was hoping that it would be something simple, and it was: a power cord lead came-off its male spade terminal. Since I had it apart, I cleaned the commutator, checked the bearings (OK), added grease to the bevel gear drive for the spindle, and used some solvent on the yellow double-insulated plastic case, to clean it up a bit. It powered-up just fine, and since it's a 7-1/2 amp motor, it has a satisfying torque reaction when you press the deadman trigger.

The screwdriver blade points to the male spade terminal where the power cord lead was detached, a simple fix. Of course I burnished the contacts before replacing the lead, and I did the other one, too.

A brand new USA made Simonds file, a 1/4 clutch screwdriver and a cool old can of MMO. I have never used MMO before but I have always heard how good of a penetrating oil it is so now I get to try it out.

And thats awesome Plomb made! Gonna have to do some more research. As some have said I do remeber seeing plomb made ratchets with only an SR marking n them befor on the bay, Gonna keep an eye out for more!

Edit: just bought an SR marked 1/2 plomb ratchet to go with them. Now I need to find more sockets and extention ect!

I really like the metal box style index and couldn't pass on it for $4.

Today Mrs LesserSon and I attended day two of the annual Super Gigantic Garage Sale at Ag Hall at the Great Allentown Fairgrounds (trumpet fanfare > crickets). Yeah, ah, $4 admission. Typical range of smalls, not much in the way of tools, but a few things to see. I passed up a Bon-E-Con with chipped chrome for $.50. Didn't ask a price for a Starrett 50ft reel tape. Not interested in a Plumb terriers hammer for $3. Left two Plomb pebble DOEs in the bottom of a toolbox. Left a dismantled wood vise in a cardboard box for $10. Identified two Vlchek slip joint pliers (thanks to Lugz’s discussion of the subject) from their distinctive curvy handle ends. One was plain steel with a forged 42, the other was plated with a forged 67 (I think) and (when turned over) a stamped Vlchek flying V logo near the pin. Is that 1942 and 1967? Seller wanted $1ea for them, but I feel like I have some already, though I can’t lay hands on them. Nother guy had a rusty but working Keen Kutter apple peeler and a bed wrench marked “gas wrench”, so we had a discussion on the many uses wrenches can be put to, despite the intention of manufacturers.
I was getting anxious that all I was going get for my admission was a slow walk on hard concrete out of the wind, when I spotted two expanded polystyrene shipping containers from a famous steak retailer, brimming with random tools. A half hour later, I had a Stanley 1/4dr socket handle and five No21 DOES, all for $3. Probably should have countered with $2, but whatever.
I absolutely have no need for these wrenches, but they piqued my interest, especially on of them. First, one of them is clearly Indestro, no mystery. Two are Bridgeport Pyramids, with the distinctive fractions on one side and millimeters on the other. One might be a Mossberg (M-circle?) with USS bolt sizes. But then there's another with fractions and millimeters, marked "No21". Is it also Bridgeport? I don't think I've seen this type before. Thoughts?

Forgot to post some finds from a few weeks ago. The Swedish barrel knife was made by John Engstrom between 1874 and 1918. Not the most practical design, but still a nice knife. The door knob came from the same antique store. Not sure what "BN" or "NB" stood for. I've wanted the Reddy Kilowatt business card holder for the last two years and finally bought it. Everyone at work thinks Reddy is giving the bird, which is a nice bonus.

On last year's thread, I posted a find from the small ravine behind my parent's barn and said I'd come back for this other item:



It's a 1954 VMC 33 Coke machine, and it's probably been buried back there since the '80s, at least. Well, yesterday was the day to carry out a grave robbing! Or as my Dad called it, "A complete waste of time!" He was certain there wouldn't be anything left of it after all that time sitting in the dirt and rain.



First, I dug out around the edges to see how much was left below the dirt line. Other than one crispy corner, it seemed pretty solid. There was all manner of household trash in the dirt around it, including bottles, cans, and Betsy Ross bread wrappers! Next, I put a ratchet strap around the top of the machine, and then rolled a second one over the top as a lifting strap, hooked into the first one on either side (Dad's idea). Then, to get the angle of the pull from the tractor to go up vice horizontal, I knocked together a fulcrum point from 4x4s and scrap lumber.




It worked like a champ! Two tugs from the Kubota and the old box was up on the edge of the ditch. We rolled it over, and Dad was shocked at how much was still there.



Since it wasn't completely roached, we put it in the front bucket and carried it up to the workshop.



After a little scrubbing, we got it on its feet and managed to get the main door open. The verdict...?



Amazingly, the refrigerated compartment was in great condition. It seems no water penetrated inside, so all the components are salvageable.

Speaking of salvage, that is the big question. I definitely do not have time for yet another restoration project. The parts inside this machine could bring a few hundred dollars, but a fully restored VMC 33 could bring a few grand. For now, it's still sitting in my Dad's workshop. I may yet part it out, or I may yet decide to drag it up to my place in Mass and add it to the "some day" project list.
