2018 Garage Sale Thread

I've had similar experiences at a swap meet I sometimes go to with my dad. Some are strange, some are mean, and some are just drunk.

I’ve had a ton of weird flea market experiences. I usually chalk it up to the vendor has been out baking in the sun too long.

One guy had an old Snap On orange ratcheting screwdriver laid out on his table and wouldn’t sell it to me because it didn’t have the end cap. He took it away and said he wanted to look for the cap. Would I have held him liable if the bits fell on my toe?

He was a nasty old guy, and I think a veteran of Korea. He hated the Asians at the market who would try to haggle. He always threw them out of his stand. One time some were trying to haggle and he threw them out, told them go back to their country. I then asked him a price on some wrenches in my hand and he threw me out with them!


Another time different market, a (young) guy with a table of rusty junk had a Ford Oil can. Stupid me I pointed out it had the wrong spout but I should have just bought it and went on my away. When he saw it was a Ford it was no longer for sale because he wanted to put it on Ebay. More power to you brother.

I’ve dealt with all types, I could go on and on with flea market stories.

Picked this tractor up a few weeks ago... it was only a few minutes away from my shop so figured I'd take a look at it, I could barely tell what it was from the listing pictures. Also was told it ran and drove before getting there, only to find out it was far from what they said. I did not know very much about tractors of this size but for $500 I figured I couldn't lose too much..
it is a Ford 3000 with a 3 cylinder diesel.. had it running within an hour with a new battery, ignition switch, and bleeding the air from the fuel lines. Runs great!

New seat, new front tires, and new battery and she's ready for action.

It's been a slow couple of weekends for sales around here. I did manage to pick up this crown top box for 4 bucks. Hopefully this weekend will be good. My town is having its annual "city wide garage sale."

Totally Off Topic, but where on the central coast are you, if you don't mind me asking. I grew up in SLO, with my dad taking me to the drive-in swap meet there.

Picked up a nice late model (but still USA) 14" Delta bandsaw. Included a mag light, rolling base, riser block, and a few other things. Will nicely batch my same generation wood-metal saw I'm going through currently. These will be the two I keep...now I need to sell the other five

I also stopped by the never ending estate sale I've posted about a few times. Well...it's ending, as I type. As of midnight this evening the owner has to give the place up so this weekend he was making a last ditch effort to sell or transport what he could. I stopped by yesterday and he gave me a few things as I was a frequent buyer, and I offered to assist in moving things after Easter / family stuff was done.

Man, I really feel for the guy...way too much stuff to address in such a short time. But I gave him a half day and we got a lot of stuff moved. I had to head home around 8-9 but I ended up with a Benjamin in my pocket (don't like it, but he insisted) and a truckload of things to play with.

I'm in Morro Bay. I go to the drive in swap meet most Sunday's. It's small, but there's a few good sellers there with a lot of vintage tools. Actually, I picked up that tool box there. .

Well, that's good to know as I was hoping to put either a 1/2" drive set or even a 3/4" drive set. I wonder if Craftsman had these small boxes for either of those drive size sets?

Not that style. Those lighter carry boxes were not strong enough to hold up for the weight. They did box them, but only the 3/4 set.

I have a box similar to the 1960 pic. I got it beat to death, and beat it back into shape, and painted it. - FYI with what I put in there originally it weighed 50 lbs... (I have no clue what the card file drawer with the 1" and extra 3/4" stuff weighs. There is 25 lbs in the two 1" ratchets alone...):

Thanks Outlaw. I'll have to recheck to see if that 1960 box would be period correct for a =V= 3/4" set. Somehow I'm thinking that's too early for =V=. That box was pretty roached. Nice save!

Just some old tools.. custom stubby made from a Craftsman spinner ratchet.. the mother of necessity—wonder if it was “made” before manufacturers actually made stubby ratchets? And-the plastic handle on the other spinner is AWOL..

Apparently the Craftsman spinner ratchet was "made for a few years around 1960". Dunno when 'stubby ratchets' became available.

Hemi, you can make a new handle out of hardwood. The trick is keeping it round after splitting it, so the trick is to split it before turning:

• Get the two blank halves prepared (over size long)
• Clamp and drill the center hole.
• Keep them together and screw the two halves together so you can remove the clamp(s) -do this in the extra waste material past the section to be turned
• Turn the outside profile.
• Cut the handle free of the waste
• Glue the two halves around the handle stub
• Finish after the glue dries
• Bob's your uncle.

Picked up this Henry L. Hanson,(before Irwin got in the mix) Ace Super Set, last Saturday for $30 bucks.....It's 97% original (made-up percentage ) only 4 non-Hanson taps and missing the small screwdriver.....
Of course, If you know me......I didn't buy it this clean

Looks complete, even including the motor mount hold down that is usually missing. Does it have the L bracket inside the lid to screw the top down? There was someone on here doing replacement decals for the bearings (IIRC, ndfan64?). 0303 or 0305?

I did see that one out on CL when I looked again last night. It is a decent price, better than most I've seen. I believe it is the harder maple because it's from the section with the aiming markers. Unfortunately, in my case it isn't long enough for the workbench I'm going to build

Stopped in a pawn shop today. Very few hand tools, but always very high prices. I saw one lonely Mac deep 3/8 dr. X 3/4 impact socket sitting in a bin amongst a few large items. No price on the socket.

I knew better but figured I’d ask anyway.

Now, the square end was beat to a pulp, the socket was filthy with grease and debris, and had large initials engraved down the side.

Took it to the counter girl, and she asks me where I found it. She calls another worker over to give me a price. He fondles it a couple seconds and calls to another guy at a desk who I assume was either the owner or manager.

The second guy asks him what kind is it? The first guys says “Just Mac.”
Now I knew where this deal was headed

Second guy goes “10 Bucks”.
First guy says how much?
Again, “10 bucks!”.

At that point I said thanks but more than I want to spend, and left.

So, today I bought a Kromedge fractional tap and die set in original box and still in celophane, an 18” Starrett scale, a Craftsman 12” scale, a small fractional Huot index, and an Eagle pump Oiler for $23.

The tap and die set has it original receipt. I paid over $2 less for the tap and die set than the original owner paid.
