So, today I bought a Kromedge fractional tap and die set in original box and still in celophane, an 18” Starrett scale, a Craftsman 12” scale, a small fractional Huot index, and an Eagle pump Oiler for $23.

Nice, taps with the sizes deeply engraved into them that you will be able to read 30 years from now unlike this brand new $750.00 Snap On set that spent a couple days underwater during Hurricane Harvey. Got them cleaned up and saved pronto with Evaporust and oil but you can hardly see the labeling. My lone Vermont American tap that was also underwater, cleaned up and looks brand new just like all those in your Kromedge set.

Elsinore, they are engraved or stamped very deeply.

I only buy vintage made in USA stamped/engraved tap and die tools and drill bits. Laser etching is just terrible. It does not take much to make it useless.

If you go back a ways in this thread, I had bought a metric version of this set. They had a fractional set too, but I cheaped out. I have enough fractional taps and dies for a lifetime...
I have regretted not buying that set. This set, in the box and cellophane, makes up for that.

Thanks, Jason.

I was 1 years old when it was originally purchased... and never used. I had a rough day, but I am really happy that I got off my *** and went to that estate sale. These are the kinds of finds that make it worth it.

:dunno:
Most new taps from all manufacturers are laser etched, not just a Snap-on thing. After a while you can usually ID them by sight, but a thread pitch gage or thread-check works on taps just like bolts.

Ecotec: what graduations on the Starrett scale?

Dave, I took a picture of the graduations on each side for you.

I bought a lot of tools the other day and finally got around the taking pics after I cleaned most of them up. The duro 1/4” ratchet definitely gives the SK a run for its money. IMG_3182.jpgIMG_3183.jpgIMG_3184.jpg

Dave, I took a picture of the graduations on each side for you.

That one is kind of an oddball...16ths, 32nds, 64ths, and 100ths. Not sure offhand what type that translates to, as an example a 4R graduated rule (most common type, by far) is 8ths, 16ths, 32nds, and 64ths.

I was just curious what it had to see if I needed to bestow a "YOU ****" on you for the rule alone, lol. Starrett rules are pricy new, only one I've ever bought new was a rigid 12" that was a hair under $50 back in '06. However, I prefer rules that have decimal inches, easier for me to read and instantly know ballpark in thousandths, rather than converting fractions in my head, as decimal makes more sense to me (hybrid of metric and inch).

Yours only has one decimal scale, in 100ths...which can be a little busy trying to read, like 64ths, but with longer hash marks every tenth, still works okay.

The fact it is stamped L.S.S. Co. leads me to believe it is an older rule, a rough timeline is anything in a typewriter font is oldest, L.S.S. Co is slightly newer, THE L.S. STARRETT CO. ATHOL, MASS. USA newer still, and finally their modern offerings usually just say STARRETT TEMPERED, which I don't like as there is no USA, like how Snap-on aficionados don't like the ratchets that don't say USA.

I'll go ahead and give you a "YOU ****" anyway, I would have picked it up too. 18" is a handy size for a rule, sometimes you need more than 12" and 24" just too much.

One more question, kind of hard to tell in pics but do you think it has a satin chrome finish, or is it bare steel?

That's an amazing find. I was in high school in 1975 and the only thing I have wrapped in cellophane are some concert ticket stubs! You should re-post that in the Tap and Die thread. It's not very active but there are a few guys who may enjoy seeing it who probably aren't subscribed to this thread. Linked here.

My metric set (that also looks unused, but no cellophane) is in a grey case.

Made it to an estate/moving sale this morning. Lot's of old tools in the garage.
Missed out on a 5 drawer Plomb roller box. Saw the same guy hauling out a 5 gallon buck that was packed full of body hammers, dollies and slappers.

I made it out with a decent little haul for $10. Most excited about the Plomb slide hammer.
Snap-on, C-Man 1/2" ratchets. Proto, P&C and Starrett punches. Plomb and Fairmount body hammers, unknown dolly. Plomb, Mac and unknown brand wrenches. Misc Snap-on, Blackhawk, Mac, Cornwell and SK sockets. Keuffel & Esser 50 and 100' tapes.

Thanks.
I almost passed on them, but they are in great shape (especially the 50') and my newer plastic Lufkin 50' is on it's last legs.

The only downside to those older reel tapes is that hooks on the end of the tape were usually optional. In some cases, you could buy the hook separately as an add-on. It's not always convenient or feasible to have to pound a nail in every time you wanna take a measurement.

I only have one K&E tape, and I don't use it for this very reason. I do like the Wyteface tape though, very thick and easy to read.

Sweet! Looks like a transition piece with the Crown label box and rectangular logo cardboard sleeve. Probably from around 1976.

The receipt is between the two trays. I was bought on August 6th, 1975.

I wasn't planning on going to any sales today, but my neighbor sends me a picture of a BUNCH of old NOS USA Cman wrenches he said he got for $17 or something like that. Guy used to work in the Springdale plant back in the day. He's moving so he's trying to sell everything in his house.

So I go there and I'm *really* trying not to buy any more trays of sockets, even though he would sell a whole tray for like $40...

Instead I go for the large sockets only, and wrenches. Unfortunately he didn't have any bagged sets of wrenches except for the older style ratcheting with the lever on the back (chinese but still nice). I also found a couple bagged sets of the 3/8" impact sockets, Metric & SAE... I don't know how or why but those were chinese too.

Lots and lots of USA wrenches... Combo, DBE, DOE, metric, sae, chrome, black oxide... I got some huge DBE's that I've never seen that large before!

I grabbed the largest of the sockets he had, mostly metric, some SAE. Also got a fair amount of 1/2" drive impact sockets and even some 3/4" impacts...

Found a 3/4" USA Flex head breaker!

A USA 1/4" speeder, still has the sticker on it.

Oh, I also found a little 1/2-9/16 DBE Stubby? Never seen one of those. Seems like it would be a super handy backup wrench.

Still going through the boxes, not really sure what all is in there... lol.

Interesting garage sale find. A vintage Facom 1/2" metric set. The guy a bought it from said his mother in law gave it to him for fixing her sink, and she brought it here from Germany. 8-32mm sockets and all the accessories. Only the 17 and 19 are missing. Can't find much info on it; any vintage facom buffs out there? The tools are marked s75, s76, and so on. I think it was well worth 15 bucks!

I don't know much about Facom, but that is likely a rare set to find in the US. Nice score. Great that it is near complete also!

Went to an estate sale after work today. Picked a couple of hammers, Proto wood handled screw driver, small US pipewrench, long C Craftsman tappet wrench, a few gouges, drill bits, and Akro Mills drill holder for $15.

Also for an aluminum folding ladder from the neighbor when I got home for $20.20180406_154236.jpg20180406_154216.jpg20180406_154157.jpg20180406_154054.jpg20180406_154034.jpg20180406_151829.jpg

Snuck out for a rainy day Garage sale (only one going)

Claimed to have tools and camping gear.

Half right. I picked up a 1970 Coleman 502 single burner, and a full gallon of Coleman fuel. ten for the stove, and 5 for the fuel

Also dug these out of the "free Box" at the curb. They will probably find use in a project at some point.

Jason- are any of those tools factory seconds? Or did he just get a deal as an employee?

When they closed down the Danaher factory in Springdale, AR the employees got to take home a ****-ton of leftover inventory. About once or twice a year there are GS from former employees that will sell what they have. I missed out on one a while back where the guy had a lot of bagged sets of wrenches.

It's stuff from the last production runs, kind of sad when you think about it, but still better than them simply selling it off for scrap.

If I worked there and they were giving that stuff away, I would have rented the biggest box truck I could find and say "Load it up!"... lol.

Wow Outlaw, you're on a roll lately with all these colemans!

I have picked up two in the last few months and both were sold to a local collector for a small finders fee. He mentioned that he had a yellow one which apparently is pretty hard to find.

Gotcha. It’s cool they got to take the stuff and it’s floating around there.

Getting to the flea finds from the other day:

Mixed rail of 3/8 Britool sockets. Metric, Whitworth, and SAE. There are an awful lot of British tools around FL, but I don’t know where all the ratchets are hiding.

Cheap no name 1/4 socket rail and adapters, ACE 1/4 spinner handle.
Mixed sockets- Bonney, Mac, Snap On, SK, Blackhawk, Cornwell, Metcoid.
Extensions- Bonney, Husky,Master Mechanic,TRW, Par-X.
Starret punch, Butcher wood chisel, Williams wood Phillips screwdriver.

Ratchets- Plomb 1/4 wall hanger, Sparta 1/4, Snap On 3/8, Vi-Chrome 3/8.

Wrenches- Husky combo, a couple Williams Superrench, Snap On saltus, unmarked open end brass wrench.

Thanks!,

Those yellows are commonly known as "Gold Bond" and can command a premium. I don't have one; not sure I've even seen one live in the wild. Not exactly my cup of tea, but If i found a deal I'd probably pick it up.

Nice score! - I only have one Facom wrench (a 20 x 22 DOE) and it's made in France. Is your set French or German? Of course, it could have been an import into Germany. Just curious

Just looked at the pix again - France clearly marked on a socket.
