Well, I went to my first auction in decades, and I'd class this one as my first, "pro" auction, complete with "buyers premium" (as in lets **** the buyers for even more...)
Ah well, just make sure you figure thst into what you bid...
What got me there was the description, and the pic of 7 vises, all looking pretty good!
So I get there get signed in and get my number, and a box to go "picking" with. (Not sure other auctions do this, but you basically go do some picking of the "smalls" make up a box (or more than one), and then you get to bid for it.
You may get out bid.
So I do that but only made one box and made sure it was somewhat random, but things I wanted. I figure there is less likelihood of someone bidding more than I would for my random selections.
There is a catch though, Someone can ask for something to be picked out and auctioned separably IF they make an offer that gets the auctioneers attention.
So the auction starts on time. I spent the first third just watching and learning, as they were selling stuff I wasn't that interested in, or was WAY over priced for what they got. Very few "deals"
We move into the "shop" area, and more stuff I wasn't bidding on; I thought I might if the Anvils didn't get into stupid money... a pretty nice portable forge came up and went for stupid $$... I was not getting good vibes for when the vices finally came up. a Baldor 3/4 HP buffer on a Baldor stand came up and I let that go as well as it was near into stupid $$
The anvils went for breathtaking sums! Stunningly the smaller one went for as much or more as the one 2X its size! (A Vulcan).
A lot more stuff I wasn't bidding on... FINALLY they went for the vises, (had to practically beg then to do them). First up was a 5" Wilton bullet without a base. otherwise in GREAT condition (all the vises were in great condition, however there were not 7 but only 4. (Someone cherry picking?

)
I won the Wilton with my last bid and then would have let it go..

NOT stupid $$ but I can make its cost and then some back...
Next was a 4-1/2" Rock Island Pattern Makers vise and I bid and bid as with the Wilton and got it for less than the Wilton! and AGAIN, at my limit!
Third up was Prentess fixed base, swivel jaw (missing the pin) and I again won at my limit!
the forth was a Columbian and I let that one go went at a good price for the buyer!
We broke for both lunch (Millers Hotdogs, provided), and the garage area, where I bid and won a couple of things, and last was the picked boxes - Mine had a small Fairmont body hammer with a long pick and someone got that pulled for a $10 initial bid. I was irked, but let it go. I DID get my box without too much trouble or cost.
So here is what all I got:
A Black and Decker Router on a stand setup for carving from a master on that top rectangular section. Presumable letters?
An Eagle Rag bucket, been wanting one of these for years.
and with it (package deal) a military water jug. looks like hell, there are leaves composting inside, but My first pass at cleaning it up looks like its recoverable.
And my box absent the Fairmont body hammer - the auctioneer commented "this guy is a good picker!"
in the back a Berkroy Shear. looked this one up: straight cutting or if you can another accessory, that clamps on the metal and lets it turn, a circle shear. (I can easily make that accessory); an international Harvester 1-5/15 wrench, A stainless Steel spigot, adn an Adz in rally nice shape!
A Fire extinguisher that used bromochloromethane (Halon replaced it), and should clean out for other re-use.
And a K-D supply tank. based on its having a way to be pressurized, (and having a pressure relief valve) I'm assuming its for bleeding brakes, (too small a reservoir for hydraulics)
