We went to an estate sale in Castro Valley, CA this morning and found a few vintage tools. The second picture is a Barcalo short offset DBE followed by some Craftsman long C tools. Next are Dunlap lineman’s pliers followed by a Ray ratchet wrench. Three little Proto wrenches are next and last is some Bell System Channellock longnoses.

So, Wednesday hits and I am starting to get that itch, checking CL every few minutes to see if something pops up, some sale, somewhere... Checking EstateSale.org and there is nothing, but in my fervor, I see a sale in the city north of me, only 25 minutes away. I can hardly sleep, for it is listing a shop sale, with tools being featured! Oh, it looks so good, but I have something to do in the AM that I cannot skip. And that person is late, dragging out my morning. Finally, he comes and goes and I can jet up to the sale.

Traffic keeps me to a reasonable speed as I dream of vintage Snap-on rollers, unscathed Plomb oddities like a child dreams of sugar plum fairies at Christmas. I cut through neighborhoods, take side streets, hoping that I can park fairly close (at least within 2-3 blocks) and...

The sale starts on Friday.

In my haste and addiction, I must have misread the ad. There were tables up, but a HUGE sign read "sale Fri and Sat." And I think I have been here before and it wasn't impressive. So I went to the Restore, which is about a dozen blocks away.
20180510_165906.jpg
I needed 4 wire B/X for a project, most of a Stanley 45 (only needs new rods), a small drill vise (needs a new lead screw) and the fixtures for the b/x. $10

Then swung out to the worst run Estate Sale I have been to. Mostly ****, some goodies mixed in, but much of the good stuff was pre-bundled with the ****, so to get a good Armstrong DBE I had to buy a bunch of junk in a useless toolbox for $10. Not worth that. Anyhow, got the following for $6:
20180510_165924.jpg
Two US rattail files, a JO industries adjustable drill and a Cal-Van socket holder.

let me know if you want to get rid of those Bell System pliers :)

I was going to put them in my Channellock collection but if you have a Bell System collection going I might part with them. I think I might have a couple other Bell System tools around. I’ll take a look.

IDK where y'all find these tools, but I'm jealous. I swear to god the only things at yard sales around here are busted exercise equipment and kids clothes/toys....

I have quite a bit of Channellock also so I’m sure we could find something to trade!

Hit some estate/garage sales this morning. None of them were great but I got the Klein extra-large storage boxes and the stainless steel wire rope at the first one. $6 out of pocket.

Next sale, I picked up the BB gun, Ridgid 6" pipe wrench and the SK Tools diagonal cutters for $8. The BB gun was made in China. No idea how old. The owner made it sound like it doesn't work. He believes there a BB stuck in it somewhere. It will **** and fire though. If anyone can point me to a link where I can read how to break this thing down and get it working I would great appreciate that. There is also some corrosion working on the barrel but I just got it to have fun with the grandkids when they come visit. If I get it working it'll serve that purpose.

Thanks!

Plomb 3/8-inch drive swivel sockets, Plomb DBEs, Plomb and Proto crows feet, a J.P. Danielson made Proto Clik-Stop 10" adjustable, a 1944 Signal Corps TG-5-B Telegraph Set, a WWII shaving mirror, and a DUNLAP offset screwdriver, just on the off chance that Donlap Don himself doesn't have one.

Being from Texas I recall those early days of garage saling with my mother and yes there wasn't much to talk about in the tool departments.

But here in PA it has been a lot better for tools selections!

Found this. It's like new, 14".

But I am questioning now its authenticity(?) :( :(
($30 - too much?)

Oh well, I got a couple of Proto (1-1/2" 1248, 1-3/4" 1256) wrenches for $10ea.

Showed up late for an estate sale this morning, as suspected, the tool room was cleaned out.
After sifting through the debris, this was all I could come up with for $5 :

Spool of 3/16" aircraft cable (about a third left)
sm. Craftsman DBE set (-V-) (missing the biggest wrench)
unmarked hex drive flat insert

100_2711.jpg

I have no idea how much cable is on the spool, I have no interest in re-spooling it after measuring.

Jake, if you can, count the coils, measure the average diameter, divide by 2 for R, and estimate! (3.14 X R X R) X estimated number of coils.

It is a Stanley. Late 70's early 80's vintage. Not their best era in tools but adequate. Plastic knobs instead of wood, cheaper steel for the blades.

I don't like to get too far afield from tools into militaria on this thread, but here are some photos of the WWII shaving mirror (these are not glass, but highly polished stainless steel) and the 1944 Signal Corps Telegraph Set. The mirrors were also used for signaling (in case of distress) and engine compartment inspections. This WWII Signal Corps video, linked here, shows one being used to check engine waterproofing with asbestos modeling clay! As some of you may recall, Swingpress found a nifty 1914 Signal Corps Buzzer back in January, linked here. So we've got a timeline from 1914 to 1944 going. :) This set is complete with the key, full line relay, howler, headset, and "call" bell. The wiring diagrams are often missing, and the dittybop alphabet is almost always missing, so I was happy. Someone wired this up for a 9 volt battery.

Way to go Mr. P!

I am in need of a good vice, and anvil. One seller had a good collection of both, but they were very expensive.

Did I every say that I love pawn shops? I should say chain pawn shops who have no idea what they have. I was off on Wednesday and was lucky enough to find these.

SnapON LSF720B 1/2 in a 3/8 body
John Deere 3/8 Bonney made ratchet
Craftsman 5mm driver
SK 90376 Spark plug pliers

The only guy on the counter is the guy who deals with the musical instraments (this shops main thing). He asks if its USA made stuff. I say yes it is. Hesays"How about 3 dollars"...that one put a nice smile on my face

Next might not really belong in this thread but it was from a pawn shop . 150$ out the door. Its a Winchester Model 12 from the 50s. 3" Heavy duck gun with upgraded wood and factory Winchester pad. I'm hoping to strip the wood and refinish it. I've had alot of Modle 12s but this is my first Heavy Duck

Mine has that same silver sticker...anyone know a time frame on that?

Not a tool, but I had some success bottom feeding silicon valley Craigslist. Saw some Jeep wheels for $250 with tires. I'm due for tires, and these have 1 Rubicon trip on them. I'll have to duig my 17s out of storage, but the hunting should be a bit less sketchy. Nitto Ridge Grapplers $291/tire at Walmart. the 4 wheels you cant see all have rock rash.

And a Trimo 36", maybe the oldest I've seen, but the handle was bent and the jaws wasted, combined with non-collectability for me not to spend $25. I think it's pre teens.

Not a huge day, again. Seems to have tapered off again? :dunno:

Eleven planned, two no shows, three places had something I was willing to pay for.

Six ft fly rod with a bait casting reel on it. :headscrat

attachment.php

Eight bucks at a place I stopped at 3-4 weeks ago - Trailer pig tail and adapter, and for my trailer connector too! 5 More of the books I bought there last time plus one on rafter framing, new tail light bulbs,

Second, third pics, JEFF MOSS ALERT!

Bell system Hammer, and some Sargent parallel jaw based crimpers, the "anvil" has a groove in the plastic...

The stamp was misaligned, but you can see the bottom edge of the "BELL"

Last place with tools; $6 for Indestro super sockets, 1" down to 11/16, one SM metric, and two Thorsen combos.

Good afternoon all,

I bought this today, for a buck, and is it homemade, or bought? Any guess of the manufacturer?

Don,
Are you saying this was the first step on the slippery slope? Interesting!

Mike

Mike,
That was just the start of the Dunlap slippery slope. Getting the Jeep got me started on the WW2 stuff. It’s been downhill ever since.
There was a city wide garage sale day today so I highlighted all the sales with tools in the description and off we went. Here is what we found. The first picture is everything. The second is a nice set of Stahlwille whitworth combos followed by some 3/8” drive Proto whitworth sockets. The next two are Craftsman and S-K. The next is a Bell System tool and last is a Herbrand tappet wrench.

I went to one estate sale today. The prices were high, but I found a couple deals.
