Probably J.A.F.E. on GG.

Par-X is a relatively little- to un-known phenomenon among collectors, even among some Snap-on collectors. They look very similar to Snap-on tools. I don't know of anyone on here who is a big bona fide collector, but guys have picked it up from time to time. I have a few pieces mingled in with my Snap-on sets. Calling them economy line is like calling Mercedes CLA Class cars economy line. Just sayin'. Not that I disagree. That was clearly the intent. But the differences come down to finish, and in some cases, materials. But not workmanship. It's not scratch and dent or sub-contracted. Which is why they are coveted by some Snap-on collectors, but also by guys looking for vintage users, because you can run into a bunch of it at an estate sale or a flea market or even on fleaBay from a seller who does not know it's made by Snap-on.

It was J.A.F.E. who posted it on GG. Good one Lugz! These Par-X wrenches are nice but definitely plain jane which sounds like SO's intent. I like the slim profile.

Got back from work tonight, and while sitting in my "office" checked out Kijiji for the umpteenth time today, unremarkable day in all categories I search thus far, but then...

"1/2 HP Craftsmaster bench grinder - 30 $"

Hmm, must be some Chinese **** I've never heard of. (Come to think of it, Craftsmaster is an old Canadian brand, but I had forgotten about it)

*scroll, scroll, scroll*

Wait....was that picture what I think it was

*scroll back up*

Holy ****! It is!:eyecrazy: Bah, must be at the other end of the province... Oh ****, it's local! :shocking:

41415899534_f3c1e1af52_c.jpg

Damn, a 1/2 HP with both eye shields and quite possibly a light!!

Glad I was sitting on the ******* else I might have actually... y'know.

Couldn't get my phone out to message the guy quick enough. (was browsing on my SWMBO's iPad)

Guy said to come by in 15 minutes when he'd get home and that he'd only be home for about an hour. Couldn't get my business done quick enough and leave the house, quick stop at the bank, stupid slow traffic and what feels like an hour later I'm at his place... and he's not there yet.

A few minutes later and buddy shows up, go downstairs and there it is in all it's glory, it's even got the quench tray which I hadn't noticed in the ad.

At this point I want to start giggling like a schoolgirl but I somehow keep my composure. Not even him saying he used it on all kinds of metal and wood can get me to bat an eye and question him.

Here it is in it's shabbiest outfit back at my place :

41415875924_b8d1835cf7_c.jpg

It's 100% all there, but it's going to need a major clean up and two new wheels for sure, guy sure did a job on them doing whatever it was he was doing with wood on a bench grinder.

There's a long weekend coming up and SWMBO will be out of town for 9 days starting on Wednesday, so hopefully I can find the time to tear into it and give it a good cleaning.

Now, for those of you thinking "Ok dude, get over it, it's only a block grinder" Why yes, yes it is and I've been actively searching for one since I joined this darned forum years ago, and this is THE first one I've found local to me. Almost nabbed one 3 hours away from home last year but it didn't work out. I had almost resigned myself to never finding one local and to buying one on a trip to Maine or Florida while on vacation, but couldn't find one worth the trouble of shipping to myself during our Christmas trip to Orlando.

I’m would not say that I see them weekly. I feel that I can say, without exaggeration or hyperbole, that I see them at estate sales monthly. Sometimes many in a month, and sometimes more than one in a day.block grinders and round top grinders are very common here. Did your city have a Sears?

Also, congratulations.

My white whale whales are a Wilton bullet Vise on a swivel base, a Dake arbor press and a vintage bench top drill index from a metro Detroit area company.

I love it when a member here is this excited about a find. My wife sure does not get it when I am that excited about finding a this stuff.

Lugz, it was more than finish in some cases. Sometimes whole steps in the process were skipped. The relief cuts on the bottom of the ratchet heads. And whole other processes were different like the treatments of the ratchet handles.

I would surmise that they did not want to make the cheaper product look too similar.
Agreed. I broke my own rules - speaking in generalities, from an insufficient sample-size. And thanks for qualifying. To qualify my own statements, I didn't necessarily mean paint or final coating, either, but all kinds of finishing steps. As far as I know, functionality was not affected.

As for the resemblance, sometimes the similarities were more than one might expect. To wit, these 1/4-inch spinners.

One is a stubby, so not an exact comparison, but it's basically the same tool. If an observer wasn't familiar with the Snap-on and Par-X color schemes in this era (mid 1950's), one might be hard pressed to identify which spinner is Snap-on proper and which is Snap-on Par-X. (And yes I did turn them so neither of the brandings is showing! :))

You can tell that the Par-x ratchets and wrenches were forged off the same stamping. They are basically the same tool. You are exactly right. I did not mean to be critical of your explanation.

Well, its been some time.
Had this pick up today:
Snap On box - I think KRA 58B (can not find the stamp for some reason...)
Kennedy small tool box
Vise:
Columbian: 61lb, 5" upper jaw, pipe on the bottom, works well, needs rust cleaned and probably repaint
Athol STARRETT 614
Athol 614 50lb, 4"
Ridgid 8" pipe
Wood Planes - 2 (Stanley and unknown (need to clean)
Long Stanley old screwdriver
Bunch of screwdrivers, etc
SK 40953 breaker bar
Fleet wrench (do not remember the size - already sitting in evaporust with some sockets)
Bunch of sockets including:
Snap On - 7
Bonney - 11 (includes 2 swivel, 1 connector)
SK-3
Craftsman - 14 including one =V=
Random: Blackhawk, Old Husky, Indestro, Thorsen - 2, Proto - 2, Stanley, Stahlaville (?hard to read), Loc-Rite, Sears - 2, Japan - 5, Taiwan (how can you not get those ; ) 12 and another 6 so rusty I have no clue... Some already are swimming in evaporust
Bunch of hardware - not by choice - checked the SO box twice with the owner for extras, missed one of little small draws twice...)

...$63 including gas

... Thought about may be selling Columbian Vise to get money back, I guess not gonna happen - my kid likes the design and wants me to keep it...

That's probably officially called a drilling hammer or engineer's hammer. :)

I guess the former owner's last name was Wright, since that's written in Sharpie on one of the pipe wrenches... Man, he missed out by not buying any Wright brand tools! ;)

Outlaw, that's a good trailer purchase. Camp Trailer 2.0 looks to be a good upgrade. I'm sure you'll get that dent out and fix the other items and this should still pull well behind your vehicle. Looks like you gain a lot of usable space here for not much money invested.

Thanks RM! My main concern is the size invites more things and potentially more weight. moving some weight from the tow rig to the trailer is a wash, but I still need to have to have some restraint.

I've even had a thought about possibly shortening the box, but that is a remote course right now, but nothing is off the table. I't almost certain I'l recenter the axle as the car top tent will transport in the forward part. so I need to watch the tongue weight.

Sometimes even though we should have 'upgraded' sooner we don't want to. But when we are forced to because we broke the old one, things work out better in the long run and everyone is happier. ;)

:+1: Jason! We learn as we go, and I always try to make improvements when I have to replace, or even it I go for version 2 when version one is still around... My only gripe is that wrecked trailer was only 2 seasons old for use. marginal for space, but towed great on the highway...

Congratulations! I have been living the same storyline until this past Sunday. As I read your post, I kept saying to myself, "yep, me too."
I was checking CL on Saturday night just before midnight. I paid $50 for my 1973 model with the pedestal and light. Plus it was an hour's drive away.

I know that where you live there are always options available as I scan Detroit Metro CL as well. It's only 4 hours away...:dunno:
It's hard to believe for some, but I will be heading down there in early June to pick up some Craftsman tools I never see up here.

So here is all of what I brought home from the sale last week. This one was particularly bad about people trying to go thru the stuff on the hold table. I think it was because it was in the center of the driveway, as opposed to one side. Went to check out, had to go back thru the pile, and bring it down some, as the original pricing was a bit high for what I was willing to spend. Best guess (after my son’s stuff and a vase/doily for my wife) was between $70-75 for all the tools. From a prior CL find, I now have 5-6 of the Grey Pneumatic counter mats, which I am going to use as temporary covers for my workbench to keep it nice and clean.

First picture is five LARGE Armstrong wrenches, from 1_5/8 up to 2_3/8. A couple of CM -V- flare nut wrenches (put back the SO ones in same size, to get under budget). A Proto Combination and obstruction wrench, a CM Scratch Awl and a ½ MAC engine wrench.
attachment.php

Second picture is a CM =V= ¼” box (been looking for one
for a while), complete with all drive tools, including bar for the breaker, sockets are SO/MAC/SK/CM (CM is metric) along with a SK short I needed to complete a set. DOE is Long C Craftsman #4, and ¾ drive extension is SK.
attachment.php

Third pic starts the machinist tools. A Brown and Sharpe Magnetic base, B&S Radius gages, BS ruler and divider. Straight/curved calipers are Starett, as well as the speed indicator. No name on straight calipers, long inside calipers are Miller’s Falls. Union made the rounded outside calipers, and the box has thread/die chasers (inside and out) in three sizes. Anyone recognize the font on the box (pic 4)?
attachment.php

attachment.php

Pic 5 is an Easco center finder set, two larger Moore V blocks (think someone grabbed the second clamp out as I swear I put four in), two smaller are Lufkin, two small and a large clamp (no names) Channellock needle nose, Japan right angle needle nose, bolt checker on a wire, rusty (unknown) blade micrometer, PAV micrometer. Pic 6 is a Mitutoyo 6” micrometer that didn’t make it into the pictures with the rest.
attachment.php

attachment.php

Last pic is some lathe tools, a set of tekton hollow punch set (going to use for leatherworking) and a Twix? Bevel angle tool.

And I almost forgot one of the best deals of the day there. For a whole $10 (included in the above estimate of $70-75 overall) I got this much neglected Waterloo 520. Still has all the drawers, and front cover. Lock was hiding in one of the drawers, so can re-mount it if I want. I have two Kennedy 520's now, and a CM branded 526, so debating about turning this into a parts box, or cleaning it up and finding room somewhere.

For my son, I got a magnifying glass (not pictured) and a cool book about WWII airplanes. Plan on cutting off the binding, and mounting several to his wall as a kind of wallpaper runner around the top edge.

Also, while not a Garage sale find, the Machinery Handbook and CM micrometers (0-1, 1-2, 2-3) were both won on Ebay in the last week or so, for opening bids (18 and 35 shipped comparatively). The Scherr-Tumico 0-1 was a CL find for $10.

Cruzan80, this is a nice Waterloo! Definitely clean it up, possibly spray it and put a nice restoration thread on it!

Part of my earlier today trip was this tool box (posted above): Kennedy for $5. For $10 you got something on a completely different level - give it another chance!

If its significantly taller than it is wide, that's unusual for a carry box other than the cantilever type.

So I'm guessing about 10 X 7? (vs a more typical 7x7)

It's 10 X 8-1/2 X 20. Style is K20.

Person running the show “Tools?” “ Oh yeah, we have tons and tons of..... cooking tools!” Pointing into the kitchen full of rummagers. Haha

Saturday afternoon I checked out an estate sale that had been going on since Thursday. Of course, it was very picked-over, and none of the interesting stuff from the photos was left. I couldn't get there any earlier, so I expected little.

Photo 1: lots of used and new Grade 8 and Grade 5 bolts, some used washers, some cushioned clamps, and some exhaust clamps.

Photo 2: Interesting trays for a couple of the parts lots. They are stamped steel, with a label holder on the front and hooks on the back to hang on a rack. One has a label with a Caterpillar part number.

Photo 3: Delco 10SI alternator that supposedly works, battery terminal cleaner, chunk of heavy wall tubing for lathe projects, three types of weld-on tiedown lugs, a threaded knob that I need for my Cat 966C loader, interesting torque wrench with a modified 3/8 tubing wrench, punch, modified 9/16 wrench, Model T Ford wrench with the T- part number, Marsh 0-15 psi gauge with a valve and adapter, and in the center a twine/string cutter that fits on a finger.

Photo 4: Wypall bucket of wipes (new), CB extention speaker, perforated angles, and a sharp triangular file with a good wooden handle.

Photo 5: Counter display for the Thexton Expansion Bolt for Chevrolet distributor vacuum advance linkage. Patented (2,396,909 issued 3/19/1946, Applied for on 10/7/1942) and takes out any backlash in the vacuum linkage.

Total cost was $12.00.

Thanks RM! My main concern is the size invites more things and potentially more weight. moving some weight from the tow rig to the trailer is a wash, but I still need to have to have some restraint.
I think you got swindled by a reseller, that thing was free on the 7th last month...but if they cleaned it, you got your moneys worth. I was thinking of grabbing it for my friends salsa business, but we had a lot of other things to do. Was it still on the Santa Cruz side of things?

I used to have big field where I could have as many trailers as I wanted, so I tried to swoop all the flippable freebies off CL

Same guy I got the $200 Weber Genesis...

$100 Ryobi 3,100 PSI pressure washer, Honda Engine with idle-down! Hose & Wand were included but not in picture. He only had one tip with it, and it wasn't the 5-in-1 that was supposed to be on that model... Not a huge deal as I can buy one with some Sears points or a gift card I'm sure I have laying around. These retail at HD for $400! :)

Water drips were because I just took it out in the driveway to empty the soap container.

Thanks. Yeah we did have a Sears though it closed 6 months ago (ish) along with all the other Sears stores in Canada.

Thing is around here, and especially in rural areas, Canadian Tire and Eaton's mostly dominated the tool market ahead of Sears. Canadian Tire because they had a bigger presence in dealer stores all over Canada and Eaton's were the #1 catalogue order company until they shut down Catalogue operations in 1976, here in town especially was one of Eaton's major catalogue operation centres. After that, more people in rural areas started ordering from Sears who didn't have access to big stores.

Yeah, I saw your post the other day and it reminded me of myself.

Amen! I live my SWMBO, but she just rolls her eyes when I get all giggly over a fool find.

Yeah. She was in the garage with me yesterday for a bit while I changed her tires and she didn't even notice the grinder on the workbench, not that she'd know the difference in the first place. Her only question would have likely been "Why'd you buy another one, you probably had one of those already?" And it's only my 2nd grinder, so I'm severely lacking.:bounce:

Very possible. He'd been trying to sell since the 7th. And the pics in the ad showed it towed, and freshly washed. :dunno:

If he made a buck, good on him.

Was that supposed to be "tool find"? [emoji38]_hitti
I think it was intentional! :bounce:

Or "Cool Find"

(He must have been "Giggly" when he posted!)
Darn autocorrect to heck and back! I really need to prod RAF (proof read--see what I mean!?) every line before I publish...
