2018 Garage Sale Thread

Saturday afternoon I checked out an estate sale that had been going on since Thursday. Of course, it was very picked-over, and none of the interesting stuff from the photos was left. I couldn't get there any earlier, so I expected little.

I hit that sale when it opened, good job!

So after dealing with the no tools at the tool yard sale on Sat., I had better luck at the flea market on Sun. Nice Parker 4" vise, Craftsman mini caliper, Husky drag link socket, B&S thread pitch gauge, and what I think is a fixture to sharpen lathe tool bits. Got the almost full can of BLO, guy tried to charge me a premium because of the cool old can, told him I really wanted it for the BLO, $2.00. 2 mini bar clamps, already used them for a little job, "flag" terminals, 6 new Greenfield 1/4"-20 taps, and a new stone for the carbide grinder. I picked the carbide grinder up a couple weeks ago at a swap meet to flip, came with a diamond on 1 side, nothing on the other, so that stone should complete it nicely.

Then on Tue., I went to an estate sale. Found the 1936 Companion motor being used as a grinder, a cool old belt drive grinder, a 1/3 HP motor, made in Belgium, cast iron motor mounts, and a bunch of stones meant for a tool post grinder. Also found, but not shown was a 3 step pulley.

Anyhow, saw some interesting stuff for a 'garage sale' that was supposed to start tomorrow. Emailed the guy and said I could come by today for the items I was interested in.

Got a Weber Spirit 2-Burner LP for $40, with cover !!!!
Pretty full propane tank for $5
Worx 16" electric chainsaw (bigger than I thought) for $10
7 Gallon Air Tank for $5
Red Beats Pill (Bluetooth Speaker) for $5
B&D cheap circular saw for $1 (plan to just use for demo so I don't kill my good blade again)

Grill was in excellent shape, just dusty & cobwebs. A little cleaning and it will look as good as new.

Was around 76 today in Troy,NY so I hopped on craigslist to see if there were any yard sales. Went to the first one I saw and it had some amazing stuff. Walked away with the rusty [Patina} gold

-A double side firestone sign. Firestone on one sign/ Wide oval tires on the other
-A 1945 SOCONY upperlube bottle

My wife was at a retirement luncheon today so I was on my own. I managed to find the sale in Alameda with the help of my phone. I arrived late but still found a few things to bring home. The first picture is everything, the second a PowrKraft tape measure for the PowrKraft collection. The next picture is a Proto LA 86A 1/2 cold chisel followed by the cleaned up DeWalt 3/8” variable speed, reversing keyless chuck drill. The screwdriver is a Bell System Bridgeport marked and the little dykes are Signal Corps marked Utica.

I have worked the same job in a factory for 25 years now. Its good pay, benefits, and 13 weeks paid vacation a year! Hard to beat. But, when we get busy its crazy. Now that I'm done raising my kido and shes out in the real world with a career and off my payroll, I'm looking for a m-f job at the plant!! I ca'nt imagine....

Nice stool ecotec! Reminded me that I didn't post my new shop stool. Picked it up Saturday from a CL ad earlier in the week. It looks vintage but is likely a retro copy. It was exactly what I'd been looking for except it wasn't truly vintage but I can live with that. Didn't notice the little clean white tag on the bottom of the base until I got it home - World Market. When I looked it up they still sell it - $129.99. It's in great shape. Only set me back $20 and a nice drive out east of Austin to a property HIGH on a hill where you had a great view of downtown from 20 miles out. That view was worth the drive!

Seriously, any weekend goto Traders Village, the good stuff we are after is in the parking lot to the left side of the "park" that place is so big it has amusement park rides. but also piles and piles of tools! And most have no clue what Plomb is!! I usually go on Sundays.

1. A Craftsman swivel vise with suction mount. Looks brand new and unused.

2. Esso home oiler can. Excellent condition. No dents.

3. Nice steel embossed 'No Parking Between Signs' sign. Excellent paint.

Cost under $20.00 for all three.

Looks like that vise is probably a Powertec rebrand, as a number of other recent Craftsman items are.

The rest is all kinds of stuff, from household Garage sale type stuff to little stores of hamocks, car stereo stuff, beds, you name it. That place is as big as Six Flags if not bigger. The stuff inside the main park is all mixed. I usually goto the side parking lot and run through all that. takes several hours. Then go on inside theres more you just have to kinda of sniff it out. oh and the street tacos are killer. Then theres this place that makes a 2 fot long taco type thing called a machette.... killer!!

Likely sold under various brand names too. I couldn't pass it up for the price. I wanted it for my model building bench. I don't really need it in my workshop.

Cool. My dad had a little place not far off I-35. If you've been there long enough to know where the rest stop used to be he lived about a mile from the interstate on the opposite side. My sister and I still have it. We let a cousin live there for paying the annual property taxes and keeping an eye on things. Got a step-brother who lives in Burleson as well. Happy hunting up there.

Hit two estate sales this morning and lucky for me I prioritized them correctly. Nothing mind blowing.

In the pic: Stanley #80 cabinet scraper, Defiance 1299 box cutter, Channellock 349 lineman pliers, Herbrand 32000 3/8" ratchet, Snap-On F-710-A 3/8" ratchet with a SO 3/8-3/8 adapter (what the heck is that?), Powr-Kraft 3/8" breaker bar to go with the metric set I picked up Monday, Stanley hammer (what kind of hammer is this?) and a set of numeric 3/16" punches made my Miller Falls. They don't appear to have ever been used. It took me about 5 seconds to figure out it wasn't missing the "9". Total cost: $8.

There were a lot of vintage wrenches and pliers from Krauter, Channellock, Blackhawk, Challenger, Plomb, Proto, etc. I am not interested in having toolchests filled with odd branded wrenches and pliers. Now if I knew people who were collecting these and knew I could trade these for other stuff I collect that'd be a different story. Sadly, I don't.

I'm kicking myself for not hanging onto the Stanley #40 scrub plane. Handle was broken but another guy picked it up and offered $2 and it sold. It would have made a nice user for me.

This week I've picked up my first and now second Herbrand ratchet. Today, picked up my first SO ratchet. I'm not impressed. Neither of the Herbrand ratchets seem very good. Given how many Snap-On fans there are I figure this one must need fixing. Seems pretty sloppy. But at about $1 each I'm not really complaining.

The Starrett 721A digital calipers were something I picked up off CL yesterday.

This week I've picked up my first and now second Herbrand ratchet. Today, picked up my first SO ratchet. I'm not impressed. Neither of the Herbrand ratchets seem very good. Given how many Snap-On fans there are I figure this one must need fixing. Seems pretty sloppy.

I know nothing about that era Snap-on, Mike. The Herbrand is from the Triangle era, after Triangle bought Bonney, Utica, and Herbrand and put them all under one roof in Spartanburg, SC. Conglomeration ruined the quality of all three, in my opinion.

I actually managed to dodge the rain drops and found some interesting things this morning! I'll post later.

It's a little skinnier than this one, but having the angled end is called "cross pein", and Sears calls theirs a "blacksmith hammer".

I have two heads just like that one. I'd like to know what they are for. They are not Blacksmiths hammers. Way too small.
