Hit an estate sale this morning which was good for some cast iron, the light pictured and some non-GJ stuff (not pictured). Stopped at my "honey hole" pawn shop on the way home and turned up a 1945 SnapOn 3/8" drive 1/2" socket, this Craftsman offset screwdriver (and a surprising amount of Proto & P&C, which I didn't buy). The US marked lock came from a garage sale last weekend, and the tent repair stuff from a different sale, 2 weeks ago. Interestingly, the needles in that kit are all marked "MADE IN ENGLAND," but none of them have the MoD Broad Arrow mark.

Magically, as if from RagTopTA's lips to the God of All Pickers' ears, the rain stopped around 4AM this morning and it didn't start again until around 8:30AM. I was in my duck boots by 630AM and at my first flea at 7AM (most of the ********* regulars were there...!) I hit my second flea just when the vendors and buyers were scrambling for cars or cover as the deluge resumed, but I counted my blessings, and one was better than none!

An interesting small haul from the first stop. Some orphan drive tools. Snap-on DLB, socket and Flexocket, an uncommon Blackhawk junior Lock-On socket, a weird Thorsen, a Walden 3/8-1/4 adaptor, a MUSTANG 1/4-inch socket, and a Crafty (U) (Plomb) extension.

But the ratchet was definitely the highlight of the day (month, and maybe the year!)

I have redacted some of the forged-in markings for now to have some fun without any name Googling. Let's see which of the old tool wizards and the new guys can figure out and/or remember what this strange ratchet is.

Last Saturday I was selling stuff at the Lewis Auto Swap Meet in Canton TX. Didn't get much of a chance to go look at stuff but I did pick up this NOS in the box Craftsman "Patriotic" Made In USA tool box. Only $10, couldn't believe it! These came out after 9-11.

Awesome find!


Today I decided to go garage saling! Much more fun thinking of what I might find, than what was out there.

I made a list of 4 sales that included a parking lot flea market, and also hit 2 random sales with signage along the way.



First on my list was in the neighborhood.
Found a Snap On tri lobe screwdriver, Snap On magnet/ screw starter and Blue Point short DBE all for $1. Woohoo! Should have called a quits there.


On route to my second stop, much farther away, hit the two randoms sales. Didn’t find anything at the randoms, nice household stuff though.

Stop #2, I pull up, garage is open and disorganized but no sign of a sale. I knock on the door, this older hispanic woman answers. I ask is this the sale, she says yeah come in, they never had the chance to set up due to the rains. Well, their house smelled amazing because I walked in during their chicken and rice feast. The tools had been sold already, but the husband brought out a few more for me to look through.

There I grabbed the Wakefield wrench with the bronze paint job and the Snap On Vac Grip cutters for $4.


Off to the parking lot sale. Turned out to be just four vendors. There was a box of rusty tools but didn’t find anything.


On to my last stop. Another nice older couple getting ready to move. Found a Matco orange screwdriver, Kobalt wrench, broken Firestone yard stick, unidentifiable hatchet head, and Keen Cutter grinder for $7.


Not too bad of a day but I made a huge loop around town and burned a bit of gas.

Last pic shows the hatchet. All I can make out thus far is Cast Steel, in case anybody recognizes it.

It's all good. Let's see if others can guess how it works before I post more photos. (You're not going to believe this, but I was going to add, "My money is on 3bay...," at the end of that post!)

Its a sheet metal or tinner's hammer. Also used for riveting for sheet metal rivets, however, a better hammer for that is a ball peen. start the rivets with a rivet set, then start pounding it flat, and then use the round peening head to smooth the rivet so its roughly round, then finish with the rivet set, (it has a half round pocket for the job)

I have them from one ounce to 20 oz. most are 10 to 16 oz. Anything bigger than 20 is probably an engineer's drilling hammer.

What type of hammer is this Stanley? If I need to provide more pics let me know. Thanks!

It's a little skinnier than this one, but having the angled end is called "cross pein", and Sears calls theirs a "blacksmith hammer".

I have two heads just like that one. I'd like to know what they are for. They are not Blacksmiths hammers. Way too small.

I have been busy and rained out the past 2 weekends and stopped by the neighborhood tool guy yard sale today. Found a pair of Craftsman wire strippers, a Craftsman *******/mill file and what appeared to be a Proto A/C service wrench. I asked Mike the tool guy and he said he had no idea what it was for. We talked about it for a few minutes and I left with the hope that it was what I suspected.

I got home and took it out to the Ranchero and sure enough, it fits. Happy camper.

We went to a couple of estate sales and a garage sale. The last stop in Clayton was the winner with a big box of rusty sockets to pick through. The first picture is everything from the second estate sale. The next picture is the complete Bonney triangle 1/4” drive set. Next is a PowrKraft axe needing some help. The next three are S-K, Snap-on and Craftsman after some cleaning. The last shot is a Danielson hammer in surprisingly good condition.

It's for sheet metal like someone else said. I'll look on mine tomorrow and see if there is a part #... Also called Tinners Hammer or Riveting Hammer...

this totally made me laugh!! glad you went! and believe it or not, about 6 months ago, I was bound and determined to own one of those ratchets I found on Ebay on a midnight search. I got busy mowing and forgot about the end time and lost it to a really low bid! Thats awesome you found it in the wild!
It is looking like rai here tonight but Tomorrow being my only day off and a pocket fulla OT cash, I will get up super early and head out to the flea and some estates and G sales!!

Scored this set of craftsman speed wrenches off the bay for the minimum bid [emoji51] all told I am into them just under $12[emoji23] it includes sizes up to 15/16 which I and the craftsman guru rileysan did not even know existed! I needed all but 2 of the smallest sizes

Also forgot to post this lot I got from a local church sale last weekend for $17. Not a killer deal but I am always glad to help out a church! Craftsman jig saw, plomb, proto, craftsman , p&c ,etc. I have since cleaned up the tools and they look pretty good! Also got the cool tin of battery chemical additive which has a 2 digit zip code so it is prior to 1959.

I got one of those shelves a while back. Mine was racked. I picked up some flat stock from HD (the kind with all the holes in it) and put a cross brace X'd on the back side. It's now the sturdiest shelf in the house even though it's on wheels.

I also took out one of the shelves to make more useful spacing.

I had a little "I didn't know J.P. Danielson even made those kinds of cast-iron split-head hammers" skip in my heartbeat until I saw that it was some other Danielson in Connecticut. Interesting. I am familiar with Greene Tweed, and follow-on'ers like Garland, but I never heard of Danielson.

believe it or not, about 6 months ago, I was bound and determined to own one of those ratchets I found on Ebay on a midnight search. I got busy mowing and forgot about the end time and lost it to a really low bid!

Believe it or not, there are four (4) SPEEDEE-RATCH's listed on eBait right now, at $20, $30, $50, and $85! Haha. Go figure. In my research, I did see that someone on Garage Gazette said that one sold for $115 a few years ago. It is an uncommon ratchet, but apparently not as rare as one might expect.

What was surprising to me is that it wasn’t totally mushroomed like all of my other copper and brass hammers. Apparently it was named after the small community in Connecticut where it was manufactured.

Hmpph! Not so lucky here. I had been watching the weather pretty closely all week, trying to decide which town-wide garage sale to attend - Nescopeck or Bally. Woke today to the sound of rain and checked the report - raining both places. No thanks. So got some breakfast and watched royal wedding coverage with Mrs. LesserSon. Apparently, that’s the event the blue skies attended today.

Found a set of snowpants for the boy to grow into and 2 almost complete sets of sled dollies. They come in sets of 3, 2 for the skis and 1 for the track.

Guy was carrying them around for $10 a set, goes to pay and only wants the rear two and will pay the asking price for them. WTF? So he pays and leaves the fronts and I got them for $10 for the 4.

Works for me.

Also found some Zima and PBR at the booze store.

Only the PBR made the trip home...

Its been raining here so no sales but it gave me a chance to post the stuff from the previous weekend.

Pic 1 - 4 pairs of USA Vise grips and a snap on flat head
Pic 2 - A full set of SAE Bondhus T-handle hex keys.
Pic 3 - SK 1/4 in set missing a couple pieces but super clean and a 3/8 SK fine tooth flex ratchet.

Total: 20 bucks

Pic 4 - Weber grill, works and in decent shape just needs a clean up. The best price of all: FREE! I was with the wife at the time going around a neighborhood yard sale in the mini van. Sitting at a sale was the grill with a free sign. It was like 9 am so a little late from the start, couldn't believe no one else took it. I said it's coming with us. Wife said it wouldn't fit because of the other stuff we had plus the height. Well I proved her wrong, just had to take off the lid and slide it in.

Quick story: I was at the 1983 Sugar Bowl (PSU vs Georgia). Some other alums and I stayed in a house in a historic district right on St Charles (with the trolleys) owned by one of my older brother's best friends. He was a geologist and worked for Gulf Oil. Ivy League front office type. His office was in a building near the Superdome. Anyway, we were young and stupid and drunk most of the time and it took us a few days to figure out that the huge iron "sculptures" adorning each corner of a walk-around fireplace in the parlor of the house we were marveling about were drill bits!

Today was one of the annual block sales. this one has been slowly tapering off over the years. The are down to maybe 3 houses per street now.

Other yard sales also, but still slow around here.

The Amflo gauge was a buck and will go on a project I needed a small gauge for anyway. The clamp hammer with copper faces, Blue Grass Arc joints, the SS door stop and the silver plate pine cone candle holders in the following pic were from one stop. $8 The little iron and the oiler were another $8 elsewhere. The oiler I think has a good seal and the pin dipper sold me on it for when I need a tiny bit of oil somewhere.

These have a center screw so can be disassembled to clean/polish

Four Little league pins were a buck. Well, actually two are Senior league and have the #42 which may be honoring Jackie Robinson?

the books, balls and bud bottle opener were all from the same place, and everything there was a buck or free! so again $8! (I guess it was 8 dollar day...)

The middle book is by Eddie V. Rickenbacker who was a hero of mine in my childhood. Race car driver/champion, Ace of Aces for the US flying services in WWI, ran Indy for years, whats not to like? The book is about the fight against the German "Flying Circus"

Those Union 76 baseballs are pretty neat. One of my family members used to own a bunch of Union 76 branded stations, so we have a few of the giant old globes in a shed on the farm.

Things started out well today, got something at my first stop. Should have headed home after this...

Grabbed a set of Made in USA wood boring bits in their pouch and a mutt ball pein hammer. Gray 8 oz head with a Blue Point handle.

2nd stop at no tools in sight, obviously they advertised them. 3rd through 5th had nothing of interest or that I needed. 6th stop had some very interesting stuff, but he was keeping it in his KRA Series roll cab, not for sale.

7th stop I spotted a block grinder; I figured I'd start seeing them more often now that I actually bought one. It too however, was bolted to the owner's bench and that was where it was staying.

Last stop had a complete set of Gray wrenches in their plastic/vinyl roll which was, as usual, all ripped up. I hemmed and awed over them for a while at 30$ for the set, but I already have two of them in SAE, had they been Metric they would have come with me.

So a box of free stuff, has mostly BSA craft kits for scout projects, mostly not started, as well as leather tools which was what I was after.

I may do the belt for me. Eagles all over it, and the leather Belt buckle may get re-purposed to decorate the trailer project (Apache Eagle) somewhere for when it is up. Another option for the belt is a rifle or shotgun sling.

I originally planned on going out to 1 or 2 sales today, but instead I ended up spending my morning picking up a CL buy for my sister. The rain started just as I parked the trailer in the back yard.

I think she overpaid at $350, but hey, it's her money. She didn't like the Free ones I showed her on CL. But this one wasn't much better. She wanted to spend $1000 on one at the Warehouse with all the bells and whistles, until I showed her how cheaply built it was. This older one by Rainbow is about 15yrs old and still solid, except for the boards that were in contact with the ground.

I ended up taking it apart mostly by myself while my sister and Lump-in-Law stood there and watched.

me : No that's a 1/2" ratchet. Give me the straight thing with the 3/8 bendy bit on the end.
LiL : Here.
me : No, that's the 1/2" breaker bar. Give me the smaller bendy thing that was on top of this one.

The rest of the time I just ran up and down rather than describe what tool I needed. Half the damned bolts were SAE and the other half were Metric.

I need to take stock and figure out which rotten boards will need to be replaced and fix it before I drag it off and set it up for my nephew before his birthday party next month.
