So I guess the same yellowbellied sapsucker who owned all the Channellock tools owned the spring bottom oiler and the parts grabber!

The Chromium Vanadium hinge handle is Indestro. Classic Duro-Indestro tells are the full name of the alloy and the male drive tang on the end of the handle.

EDIT: Evapo-Rust will remove some paint (and only some kinds of paint - iron based I believe), if you leave a tool in it long enough, but it's not meant for that, and it won't remove it immediately, cleanly and completely like a stripper will. Conversely, a stripper will not de-rust a tool.

Nice haul! Sometimes brake or carb cleaner will remove the paint without harming the plastic on the Channellocks.

JAB,

I see that Don already showed a duplex he has, which should give you a better picture along my description of how these old blowtorches worked. Here is the vintage Lenk I just got.

This was in the trash on the curb of one of my customers. He had what looked like a bunch of not sold garage sale items in the trash. I Did his lawn and gladly put this in the van. It is in great shape.

Lugz, Don,
Thanks! I've got some acetone. I suspect it will do the same to this soft plastic handles that it does to hard plastic but would it be okay to use to get the paint off quickly without harming the metal? I'd try to put it on a rag and keep it close but try not to touch the plastic handle covers. Thoughts?

Lugz,
Nice to hear that breaker/extension is Duro-Indestro!

Be very careful with acetone on those yellow handled drivers. Too much on the handle and it will start to melt. You are ok if you get a rag damp with it and then wipe your tools down.

I've used all kinds of solvents to remove paint from steel tools and toolboxes and I have never had a problem. I like gel form because it wipes on thick with a brush and clings to vertical surfaces. Leave it on a minute or so and then rub it off with 0000 steel wool, then immediately rinse the tool in water, rub dry hard, then oil. Smokeshow's warning is probably wise, but I would probably risk it on the plastic parts, too. But that's just me. The label of your product might say something about plastic. Or try it on the handle of a junk tool you don't care about first.

I had a VERY GOOD day at my Friday early bird this morning!

If you recall, I bought a late 40's Craftsman made by Union Steel Chest Corp box a couple weeks back that I have been restoring/preserving. (GJ thread on that restoration/preservation project linked here.) As you may recall, it was missing some parts, including the mirror, the center locking latch, and the drop front panel. I picked up another Union Craftsman "parts box" today on the cheap. It is missing all but one drawer, but as you can see, it has the center latch and the drop front panel, which is all I really wanted!

The 6" curvy adjustable (with an extra after-factory twist in it) is a Billings.

The little tin can is Helme's Quality Snuff.

The multi-wrench is BELL SYSTEM B.

The nutdriver, an Excelite, is the smallest I've ever seen (guessing 1/16") with a pocket clip.

What lucky $h1t did you step in this morning? :) We're going to have to find a new affirmation for that kind of luck! Great find and congrats on finding the parts to repair your other box.

I tried an experiment a while ago with an old screwdriver handle after watching an episode of "How it's made" where it showed making tools. The finishing step for a plastic (possibly acetate) handle was to dip it in acetone and let it dry.
The result was a clean almost polished surface. I tried this on an old junk bucket screwdriver and it did work. I sanded the surface with fine sandpaper and did it again and it came out pretty good. I found if I dipped it let it dry it was best. Anything else like blowing with compressed air or shaking off the drop on the end left a mark. Might be worth a shot on a restoration and this information comes with the standard innerwebs disclaimer that you have to test and be careful, your mileage may vary, etc.

 Indeed. My straightening (un-warping) efforts on the first box came out better than I expected though. And I can test how straight it is with the drop front panel I just picked up! I'll post pics on my resto thread tonight.

Might be a good day to buy a lottery ticket Lugz! Just sayin'! Nice find!
I'm never THAT lucky! :) Thanks.

Short trip to a small flea today, while Mrs LesserSon gassed up the minivan. $6 bought these.

I'd like to know what you guys recommend to remove paint and rust while maintaining the integrity of the metal. I've tried vinegar and don't like it. I can't recall if Evaporust will remove paint. I know electrolysis will but it's kind of a pain to set up and then clean up.
An overnight in simple green removes most grease and many paints. If it doesnt work, at least it kept the grease out of your evaporust.

Since we needed to run errands in Carson City this morning, my wife and I drove to an estate sale in Lake Topaz, NV. I found an unknown cantilever toolbox that Lugz will find ironic plus quite a few other treasures. The first and last pictures are all of the tools. Number 2 & 3 are the unmarked toolbox if anyone wants to hazard a guess. Number 4 is the S-K. Number 5 is Craftsman and number 6 are tools from the Plomb/Proto empire.

LS I like that second clamp! Yery stylish! Does it have a brand?

I don’t see anything, but that 5-sided star looks familiar, and there is a cross-hatch pattern on the cheeks. Looks a lot like early PS&W. Maybe when I get it cleaned up something will show. Between its age and looks I knew I couldn’t leave it behind. Only wish it was 8” instead of 4”.

While driving home, I saw someone had sit this out in the garbage. At first I was going to leave it, but then thought it would be a nice tool box someone. When I walked up to get it, I saw it had two drawers.

So, driving home today I stopped at an ES that had looked good in the CL pics. I didn't know how good it was!
20180720_151547.jpg
Proto LA dual face hammer, magnahelic gauge (always provided by work when I was in the trade), vintage Stanley Catalog (not sure how old), Craftsman RPM meter, Heritage socket box, long feeler gauge (goes up to 1/8"), Cornwell extension, Kromedge file, Cornwell and Williams ratchets, misc. punches, 6" scale, table clamp for a Luxo lamp, lockout tag, Starrett stair clamps, 1MT drill bits, a metal brush and soapstone holder. $55 for everything. At the sale was a ton of stuff I already have or really don't need, but I will be back on 50% day!

Well, never say never! I picked out a sale that had NO tools in the pics, figuring SWMBO would like some of the clothes and other stuff. I descended into what looked liked an empty basement, but things turned better when I heard a kid say "Oh, look, Mommy, there's tools over here!"

Not many tools, but a few gems. Not bargains either, but I did okay.

1969877d717ebdfa228bd61173be9f91.jpg

NIB Craftsman Router Template set--never been used--$20

Crowntop 1/4" socket set--normally I would have passed, but it has the fine thread ratchet, and is missing nothing!--$10

Millers Falls No 1408 angle bevel--$5

All below in a ziploc for $20
Bonney 1/2" ratchet and complete set of 12-pt sockets
Bonney 3/8" ratchet and a selection of 3/8" sockets
Bonney 1/4" sockets
Craftsman big 1/2" and one 3/4" drive sockets

Snap-on screwdriver

SWMBO got a comforter for $5

After spending the day in Gloucester for my birthday, we were going through downtown when I spied an estate sale retail office. We stopped in to look around. Everything was pretty expensive, as might be expected, but I managed to find this Snap-on S-8164 specialty wrench for $6. Hey, if they don't know what it is, I'm not inclined to tell them!

Thanks for the **** fellas. Lol. In my torque wrench excitement I didn’t attach the rest of my finds. Everything pictured here was $1 minus the craftsman bolt remover. They were $2. cb43c817edab1a698a44a41c9e04b667.jpg
