Scenario: garage sale / estate sale, old-timer has passed on, family selling everything.
Question: why, in drawers and tool boxes, are there dozens of dirty, used spark plugs jammed into the packaging for other brands (probably newer) of spark plugs; specifically, why hold on to spark plugs that have been replaced? (Maybe even, for engines that are no more.)

Dozens? No clue. I'll often keep a set of decent used plugs in case I foul them in the "outback", but not more than that... and those are in the road box for spare parts, (some used, most new...)

Hell, I'd have paid $5 just for the singing, farting hillbilly.

Wife & I hit a retirement community (55 & older townhome complex) garage sale few weekends ago when I came across a table of old American made tools. After talking some, the fellow was a retired truck transmission rebuilder. Everything’s made in USA minus a few 1/4” sockets that were in the plastic bag with the SK 1/4” ratchet. Wrench sets taped together are Craftsman SAE & a partial set of William Vulcan metrics.

Purchased a small lot of tools that included these Fleet USA DBE & DOE’s on local Craigslist. Also included were these hex key sets, one labeled VACO, the other by Xcelite.

Picked up some "stuff" off CL today. Finally, found a Craftsman grinder worth buying, picked up another Dayton grinder, a squirrel-cage fan and my first anvil. The grinder is missing the water cup. Anyone know how difficult these replacement water cups are to find? Also, what dates were these made and sold - '60s?

I need to replace the cord on the Dayton grinder. I'm not even gonna try and see if it works because that cord has got lots of breaks in it. I've been looking for a smaller version of these fans but the price was right on this one - free. It has a GE motor. Lastly, the guy threw the anvil in for free. ;-) Set me back $50 for the grinders.

Dayton alone well worth the $50.

I think Searspartsdirect was out of the cup last I read. But it never hurts to check. There is a thread with part #'s that you can search. Otherwise you can go to the auto-parts store, get a brake dust cap for drum brakes and it will fit in that hole perfect.

Being a plastic switch it's probably a later model round-top. I have that same exact one but mine is a metal switch. Some will have a date stamped on the bottom metal plate (you might have to remove it from the machine as it could be stamped on the inside). So take it off the stand and look. I never bothered to look in the old catalogs to see if I could find my exact one but I bet someone here could tell you a close year.

Is a Sears store on the final days before closing forever close enough to a garage sale LOL? Picked up these Craftsman ratchet repair kits, 99 kits total! 9 of them were for the old RHFT ratchets.

Thanks Jason. Yeah, I admit I was surprised and disappointed to see that plastic switch. Doesn't matter though I still love it.

edit: it looks like the ratchet's head is cracked (1st pics)....that's what I thought at first, but it's just dirt....whew ;)

I had high hopes for a sale this morning from the pictures posted online. Unfortunately I was a bit lazy this morning, and they apparently didn't adhere to their 8AM start time. Place was pretty well picked over by the time I got there at 8:05. :hitit

Still grabbed this for 10$:

MasterCraft 5-pc Torx set. 4 of the 5 are Comfo Grips made in Canada. I really like these hard handles. The other one is a later style made in Canada also but I'll track down the right one eventually.
Craftsman crown top drill bit grinding attachment. I'm a sucker for things in their original boxes.

Question....are those drill bit sharpeners desirable? I found 2 the other day when cleaning my garage from the previous owner.

Do you have the instruction for the drill bit sharpening tool? If so could you post them here so I can see what I am missing on mine. Thanks,

If you would like to part with a few of those RHFT rebuild kits, I'd be interested as some of mine have lived a hard life (unlike the more recently purchased ratchets that exist in my tool box because they are shiny...)

Craftsman RHFT's are my daily users so not worried about selling those. If someone really wants one they would be $20 to $25 a piece. They have been getting more and more expensive on eBay. Sometimes though they pop up on EBay for cheap for people who didn't research them well enough.

Hmm, must be some time limit on that sort if thing. I did check the link immediately after posting it, and it was working.
What I did was go over to the Vintage Tools level, clicked “Search this forum” and put “Craftsman block grinder” into the search field. (Actually, I added “fuss” because I know one of the Threads includes “what’s the fuss” or something like that.

If you posted the results of a search, (the list) - yes those are not a real "page" just a report.

You can right click on any of the links to the actual pages, and copy the URL, and post that using the Link button.

In case anybody has been following the worlds greatest yardsale I mentioned last weekend and the weekend before, I stopped by again, and still managed to find some Snap On tools.

Snap On retaining ring pliers
Snap On distributor wrench
3 Danco punches and chisel
Tiny Craftsman punch
2 sets of US made Channellock pliers
And 2 six ton jackstands.

Paid $15 for all of it.

He said he was going to go through his shed and pull out some more tools tomorrow. So stay tuned....

Stopped at an estate sale on the way home from work. It was obviously for an elderly lady, so it was mostly clothes and kitchen stuff, but I did find a few things on a workbench in the basement.

* 1" and 1 1/16" Greenlee hole punches
* Disston file
* North Brothers Yankee screwdriver
* Linoleum knife, made by Gordell out of Antrim, New Hampshire
* A cute little oil can with no manufacturer markings
* Extension cord made of good quality SO cable.

Everything was $1.00 each.

That IS hot. I was in Memphis TN late July 2010, it was 104 or so. I thought that was hot. I was in Salt Lake UT this July, can’t remember the temp, but I thought that was hot. I guess I was wrong.

Hi guys, thanks for the warm welcome back! Due to circumstances beyond my control, I am now officially a Texan... I've been in the Dallas area trying to get back on my feet for the past year and finally started hitting sales again here recently. That pic was from a sale a few weeks ago when temps were peaking, it's still avg 100 deg though. I have pics from some sales I'll post shortly. Hope everyone is doing well, can't wait to catch up!

Good to see you nines!

Here is what I came across today. Four sales, just under $30.
3006vqc.jpg

2yoxr1g.jpg

6y08jc.jpg

The band saw, vintage lamp and Indestro wrenches (which I needed to fill out my truck kit) came from the first stop, $27 total.
The Plomb LA, sockets and Snap on roll came from the other three stops.
Oh, you also get to see my tiny shops corner.

A not very productive day at garage sales. I did meet a rude seller who wanted to look into my bag that contains my magnifying glasses, flashlight and my Wingnutt’s Whiz GMTK guide. His prices were high anyway so I carefully put back my intended purchases and was off to the next sale. Who needs that? Anyway I found a decent 100 ft. tape measure, a couple of Vlchek wrenches and some little Kraeuter dykes.
