Got this cantilever craftsman box. Any idea when it's from? 60s/70s?

I know craftsman had a lot of grey boxes, but it sure looks red where the grey paint is damaged.

I'm in Canada so sears might have sourced them somewhere else. (I know beach made some craftsman chests here).

Would love to have one of those! Great find 5k!

Probably clearance for the handle so *** doesn't need to be removed to sharpen the teeth at the handle. Wont work for all setups, but for many.

I had that thought Outlaw but never having sharpened a saw, therefore not knowing you take the handles off to sharpen the teeth at that end. I assumed with the width of the clamping piece and it's T or hammerhead shape there must be room for the teeth at the handle end.

Makes sense.

Here's a similar beach unit, they use the same style hasp for a padlock - I'm inclined to think beach made the one above for sears canada.

edit: also beach boxes have the socket rails in the top shelf, as does the crafstman. Not sure I've seen that elsewhere.

I had a joke about the trade but Ducks deleted his post so it’s no longer relevant. :dunno:

Ok, I’ll say it anyway.

I don’t believe either one of you got the short end of the stick in that deal. :bounce:

Here's the Craftsman.
This sale had great pictures but I got there late. I was there 1 minute before opening which meant I was last in a long line!

Pic 1 and 2: This vintage Craftsman axe is probably from the 1930's. It was broken and repaired so I asked my axe guy if he wanted it before buying. He did so I bought it for $6 and sold it for $8.

Pic 3 and 4: Permanex Craftsman Crown logo case with discs and wire brush, perfect for my 7" Craftsman Crown sander/grinder.

Pic 5: This toolbox was $14 and I opened it up and saw the mint 1/2" drive =V= ratchet and looked no further. Found a few other Craftsman items in it as well.

Pic 3: Mint shoe rasp and auto body files and Crown logo auto body file holder.

Pic 4 and 5: Crown logo industrial sander in the box and some Crown logo accessories I found in some storage cabinets I found.

Here's the Davethorik trade:

It's a
Starrett SIX FOOT LONG RULER!
That black shadow on the top edge? Not a shadow. Those are .01 marks. 7,199 of them!

Packaged like crazy.
Sandwiched between two 2x4 eight feet long, a half a pack of star drive 3 1/2" screws and a half a roll of what seemed like real gaffer tape.

He drilled a hole in the end of one of the 2x4 and put the correct drive in it to remove the screws.

It was a simple trade.
I put just this one picture of the Herbrand as out for trade

Instead of the standard
'whatcha wanna trade Fer?'

His entire reply was
'I have a six foot Starrett ruler to offer for trade. "

Done.

The goodies were to help cover the ungodly Postage that he didn't even balk at on an even trade.

A fine trader.
I hope I find a dozen other things to trade with him

Man that's a lot of nice stuff Bluebolt...I know you're a crown top guy so you should be loving it! Not many sales seem to start that early in the week down here. I'm heading to the beach instead of the state auction this weekend, so I'll be watching from the sideline :)

Part 4, did you think I was done? A GREAT day at an estate sale HAS to include vises!

Athol 113 3" wide jaws. Decent shape, unusual shape slide.

Haven't found much information on the little W.H.B. yet other than it was supposedly made in Germany.

AND still not done! But part 5 will have to wait. I mentioned storage cabinets but they are outside covered up until the morning, all I will say for now is they are old military wood cabinets that were repurposed. The gentleman who's estate I purchased this stuff from was retired military and supposedly a 4 star Air Force general. So lot's of military stuff all around this place. Military shipping labels, various AFB addresses on different items and so forth.. Large shop out back and small one attached to the house. The General is still alive, his wife passed and he has gone to an "active retirement home" from what I heard. Including the cabinets not yet pictured I spent $181 so far. I checked out, loaded up and took one last look.

And the last look is why there is a part 6!

During a my last look I spied a couple of footlocker size wooden boxes under a shelf, they had been hidden by other stuff and NOBODY had been in them including the estate sale people. People had been buying and removing stuff and the boxes were uncovered and finally accessible after I moved more stuff for 15 more minutes.

So I pulled out the first box and opened it up.

AND IT WAS A TREASURE CHEST!

It had a lot of nice axes and hatchets in it starting with a nice Keen Kutter.

Now there had been some nice axes inside the house with BIG prices on them and they were selling. $25, $35, $50 and guys were buying them carrying them out. So I was wondering how high these would be priced, some were better than what was inside. I figured it would be more than I would want to pay.

And the guy starts pricing them at $5 to $12 each! WOO HOO!!!

Pic 1: The Keen Kutter, it was nice! The best axe there.

Pic 2: True Temper Kelly Woodslasher, never used, perfect handle.

Pic 3: C. Hammond hatchet.

Pic 4: A clean Plumb broadaxe hatchet

Pic 5: L A Sayres and Son's.

Pic 6: Briar Edge Service Tools.

Pic 7: Rock Island Line which was a railroad. Immortalized in the Johnny Cash song "Rock Island Line"

Part 6 section II!

Pic 1: A full picture of the Kelly Woodslasher

Pic 2: A decent Boy Scout Plumb

I ended up spending $84 for axes and hatchets and sold them to my axe buddy for $185. I could have gotten more money for them especially the Keen Cutter but it's a quick $101 profit, he's very happy and I'm happy! Now he lives 30 plus miles away from me but after seeing the picture of the Keen Kutter he was really EXCITED LOL. And as Karma would have it he was working only about 5 miles from my house and made a beeline there as soon as he could!

We are talking about the same thing right Lugz? That 1-1/4" "gap" underneath where the saw blade clamps?

I wonder if we have any Disston saw vise aficionados here or maybe I should create a thread in the vintage tool forum?
LesserSon may know. And I may have a Disston catalog or two I can check. But yes, I think we're talking about the same thing. Mine, including a Disston, don't look like that. Outlaw's reply below is interesting, but I'd have to really look at it harder again to understand it. I'm not with the vises right now.

Probably clearance for the handle so *** doesn't need to be removed to sharpen the teeth at the handle. Wont work for all setups, but for many.

A week and a few days back on US soil, and I finally hit some paydirt with this early to mid 1930's New Britain socket set today at the flea market. Not everything is NB in there, but most of it is. Sockets are all identical, but two slightly different markings. Look for more on the NB thread.

Well it's 4 AM, can I get up at 7 am to make an 8 AM estate sale LOL?

I didn't even set the alarm LOL. Woke up at 9. The one sale that looked interesting still had nothing in the pictures I wanted. Will get the storage cabinets out and sort out the drawers and take pictures. Spent enough money yesterday anyways LOL. Better keep it for beer later!

After the estate sale yesterday I stopped by a roadside tool sale held periodically by a guy I know. Didn't have the Craftsman metric wrench I was looking for but did have these Craftsman RHFT ratchet rebuild kits I bought along with the mint =V= 1/2" universal. These kits are actually 2 per package for 6 total. He gave me the Mustang sockets and ratchet for my collection I am starting.

Before power saws, saw sharpening was a daily occurrence for carpenters. There was no way they would have taken the handle off. This has more about that model vise about half way down. http://www.blackburntools.com/blog/saw-sharpening-series-saw-vises-part-ii/ and that model could come equipped with a saw filing guide. http://www.vintagesaws.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=156

Some of my finds from last weekend. Snap on wrenches and a Bonney 17/32" tappet wrench, a size I didn't have, new Craftsman drill press vise, assorted odds and ends. The small tap wrench is marked A.M.T. & D. No. 107. Anybody know who this is? T. & D. sounds like tap and die, but can't think who A.M. would be. Don't really need any more tap wrenches, but thought it was too cool to leave behind. Probably would have passed on the blow gun, but it has my style coupler already in it. Railroad track anvil, big box of grinding discs and a lifetime supply of 3/8" lock washers (1000). Jorgensen bar clamp seems to be a lot heavier duty than most of these I see.

That's definitely it Disston D3 (aka D3) saw vise. Thanks pfaustus! Website says one of the better old saw vises made. Also had some good tips for making it a bit sturdier when in use. Very cool! Not bad for $10.

Nice little OD green mini cabinet, Dan.

That's definitely it Disston D3 (aka D3) saw vise.
Glad you got it ID'd, Mike. I have to admit, after reading about it, I still don't understand the need for the wider "gap" as you called it, behind the jaws, at the back of the vise. Just out of curiosity, how wide is it? I have a DISSTON No. 2 saw vise and an unbranded saw vise and that gap is a 1/2" on both. See pic.
