PWRstroke, that Dunlap is a Covel or Atlas made saw for Sears, depending on the year made/sold. Atlas (Clausing) bought Covel, and continued manufacturing. Not sure when Sears switched the branding from Craftsman to Dunlap, for that saw.

I went to this guys place who is about to have a yard sale coming soon. I got there and he had a Power King Shaper with 21 cutters and this older heavy hydraulic jack. He was wanting $50 for the shaper and I am not sure what he wanted for the jack. I talked to him and he decided to let the jack and shaper go for $29.00. He wasn't interested in hauling it back to his home. He had everything set up at his office. He was into renting properties.

Small addition to my collection:
Hornet Williams Set 81380
3/8" set
Sockets: 3/8, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4

Sorry for dirty tools - still needs to be cleaned...

...slightly less than $6

... and a pleasant surprise: it came with no name 3/8 small extension which perfectly fit the size of a missing one in my SK metric set (will be living there till I find a proper one for a good price)

Will be posting in vintage tools as well - I hope somebody can photograph me their paper insert so that I could glue it to inside of the cover.

Just picked up this interesting BERNARD's Schollhorn pliers this morning at my flea market. I have a few BERNARD'S Schoolhorns, different types, and I have seen many other types, but this is the first time I have seen one with these jaws. Need to do some research. See Pic 1.

I am far from squeamish, and I have been known to dig through some bins and buckets and boxes that other guys around me wouldn't touch with a 10-foot vaccinated anti-lockjaw anti-rabies pole. Or maybe I'm just getting old. But sometimes even I have to "Just say no!" See Pic 2.

 Looks like the bin was rained on, or in, I should say. I’ve seen worse Lugz. Rusty things previously known as tools stuck to surfaces. If the room looks like the set of the movie Saw, there’s bound to be something good there. Pun intended.

Shelby great buy. Wish I could offer you a nice picture of the insert but maybe someone else has their set on hand.

LUG: nice find. what i've been know to do is buy (make a lowball offer) on the entire bucket of stuff hence me having more than a few buckets of tools like that to go through one day when I GET ORGANIZED.

with all the copper, bronze, brass and mixed higher grade metal tools showing up some of those that appear rusty could actually be made of something else besides steel.

ALL: I haven't had much time to shop as i'm trying to scale down my STUFF, but I still look.

here's a little Blackhawk 1/4 inch socket set and a few odds and ends i picked up.

Picked up a Burke horizontal mill with a good bit of tooling and a power hacksaw for $500. I haven't had time to clean the hacksaw up yet but all it needs is a coupling between the motor and gearbox and it should be good to go. The mill works well and also has a coolant pump setup...pretty neat. The arbor is not keyed, which is a little odd, but I imagine as long as you're milling in the proper direction it shouldn't matter. My favorite is the integral four speed gearbox on the mill's motor.

Definitely rained in! The residue on the insides of the bin reminds me of the very distinct tide line along the cattails of my favorite crabbing creek! And yes, I've seen worse, too. Usually wooden boxes with antique tools. Somehow I worry less about my last tetanus shot pawing through those. :)

LUG: what i've been know to do is buy (make a lowball offer) on the entire bucket of stuff hence me having more than a few buckets of tools like that to go through one day when I GET ORGANIZED.
Having caught glimpses of your property and your garages, I can see that in you! :) My pop was the same way. On Saturdays we always came home from the dump with more than we went there with! I am more of a picker. Typically the vendors around here are quick to push a whole shebang price for a bin or even a toolbox I am looking through, but I am usually the one trying to not sound annoyed as I say for the thousandth time something along the lines of, "Thanks, but I am only looking for certain things...", and then trying to not sound even more annoyed when they ask, "What things?" And I really don't have a good answer other than, "I'll know it when I see it." HAHA.

A few mid-week finds... Williams Superrench DBE, Williams "special" 725 (with optional viewport) and a Duro-Chrome 678D (sadly missing a selector switch).

Just picked this SK-Wayne ratchet set up today at an estate auction. I probably overpaid a little at $35, but its in brand new shape and I was waiting to buy something all day.
I did notice that the breaker bar was a little tight, is there a specific grease or oil I should use to make it a little more smooth?

Did you try by hand, or with a socket on it? I wouldn't add anything, it's an older style with the handle and drive connected with a pin.

After a lengthy and little fun dentist appointment, I swung by the Restore, ostensibly looking for Mogul bulbs (they had some but wanted more than retail for them!) but found these treasures, spending a whopping $4. Half that was for the driver, a Proto LA 9714 that someone ground the tip off. So, I am on the lookout for a driver that can be a doner. Also, the Snap-on refer ratchet is a '46 and the T-handle is a Long C Craftsman.

BMW, build that driver into a 3/8 drive handle for sockets! I have a hand and a half driver someone made from a 3/8 SO extension...

LUG: sorry I didn't mean to hit a nerve or bring up a PET PEEVE about your willingness to dig through a box of rusty tools, but in my area i've done that and maybe found one or two and then the seller wants to charge more than he would have for the entire amount probably cause he wants to keep it now that he knows what it is.

if you are used to negotiations on a piece out of a bucket going ok then carry on.

BTW I haven't had a tetanus shot in about 45 years and I didn't have a choice when I got that one cause the doctor wouldn't stitch my leg up after cutting it on my dad's boat trailer without the shot.

ALL: keep posting up your cool stuff cause i'm always amazed at what you all find.

3Bay: sorry I didn't have any more pictures handy, but i'll try to take a few of the tapes I posted. that said I might own 100 of these kind of tapes and not sure why. I can say that i've probably bought 40 20+ foot tapes and i think I know where 2 or 3 are cause they always disappear.

thanks for the good words

You didn't hit a nerve, and having shared plenty of pictures of my flea markets before, hopefully you know I DO dig through rusty toolboxes (though apparently even I have a limit, to wit, that last tidal estuary box!) as well as the contents of rusty toolboxes dumped onto tables.

I wouldn't call my impatience with vendors who insist on giving me the whole box price as I am looking through it for the collectible gems a PET PEEVE, just one of those things that try my patience and sense of politeness for having to give the obligatory answer to. If I wanted to sound annoyed, and let him know I was annoyed and also that I found him stupid, the answer would be, "If I was interested in buying the whole box, why would I be surgically picking through it like a man who is only looking for something in particular??!!!"

EDIT: Just to make sure we have all the bases covered on this subject, my annoyance will without a doubt turn into one big fat and guiltlessly, righteously indignant, impolite PET PEEVE if the vendor announces, way too late, that if I want the one item I surgically removed from the box (the contents of which he didn't have the time, inclination, good business sense or common courtesy to clean, identify, and lay out neatly and in some semblance of order by type or brand) I would have to buy the whole box or pay the whole box price for the single tool, instead of the customary $1. Or worse, and much more infrequently, that he now realizes it's something of possible value and he wants something more than the box price for it. For these types of vendors I reserve my most sophisticated and insulting derision and future boycott.

EDIT 2: On the rare occasion - and it has happened to me on more than a few glorious times - that the single tool in question is worth much, much, much more than the box price I will gladly buy the whole box at the whole box price. If I like the vendor, I will ****** my golden unicorn and tell him or her he or she can re-sell all the other junk I don't want (and don't want to carry home). If the vendor is an ******, I will carry the unwanted box and tools to my truck, remove the gem, and leave the box of junk in the parking lot in front of my truck for someone else to find, gleefully smiling to myself at having got one over on that ignorant lazy and unfair ******.

Well said lugs ! I have made some really good scores on plomb, proto, snap on, craftsman, etc out of the tetanus bin but I have also want to choke a few sellers as well. Drives me nuts when they don’t care about their wares enough to actually keep them clean and rust free [emoji849] but I have also pulled out lots of unplanted war time plomb that was able to be cleaned up very nicely for a $1 per piece ! If the seller is not willing to sell them reasonably or by themselves, they get the death stare when I drop them back in the bucket and I tell them good luck! I love the dollar tables at swaps and have made some really cool finds by searching boxes, bins, other places that people are not willing to look or that they overlook. I do wear disposable nitrile gloves when picking at swap meets so the rust and grease does not get me dirty !

Smokeshow69: Glad I'm not the only one with good scores or death stares. Honestly, I don't mind the guys who don't bother to go through their own stuff and know what they have. My best killings are made at the liquidators. With their MO - where volume and pace are the name of the game - it doesn't pay for them to do that and I get that. And so do they. They know they're probably selling some gems and unicorns, but they can't slow down. So everything sells for peanuts. Clean out one house and garage and move on to the next. It's the vendors who try to have it both ways that I won't tolerate.

I had some fun and a pretty decent haul at my double early bird this morning...

Pic 1: THE HAUL

attachment.php

While popular as ornaments with folks, I don’t normally pick up stovepipe dampers. I liked the markings on this one.

In the reddish wooden box under the damper is an L.B. Miller Screw Extractor Set with four (4) extractors, No. 2 through No. 5. I don’t think the label or the extractors are original to the box. There are more slots than four. But they are useful.

I'll be posting more about the Blue-Point tap and die set on the tap & die thread and the Snappy thread.

The pressed steel wrench set is really cool. Hercules. Made in Germany. Even though it often seems like vintage tools are out of place there lately, I will be posting more about this on the 'Tools from the Old World' thread (here on General Discussion board).

The DBE wrench is a Vlchek Motorcycle Wrench destined for BB's DBE thread. I think I remember they were an Indian supplier. I hope so, because I have two Indian marked OE wrenches as well as an adjustable. For me, these are the real joys of collecting. Yeah, it's quicker to just run a search on eBay day after day and bid on a Indian toolkit, but finding one wrench with no intent or hope or plan to ever find any others, then finding another one one day, and a few more after that another day, in the span of 4 or 5 years, just feels more gratifying. Again, to me. In a life that's filled with more than enough stubbed toes, empty scratch-offs, and bad mistakes, it's nice to know the lucky star flies over your head every once in a while.

That DOE wrench is a TRUECRAFT FORGED IN U.S.A.. Just a curiosity buy. I've found TRUECRAFT German Zone (postwar) tools, and I know that modern TRUECRAFT was coming out of Japan much later, but I never heard of TRUECRAFT U.S.A.

I'm not an antique tube radio guy, per se, but I couldn’t resist the little wooden Philco with all those vintage college stickers. I've got an Ivy Leaguer who might like it as antique décor some day!

Pic 2: THE LEFT-BEHIND

I would have liked to have had this WARDS MASTER QUALITY ball-pein hammer to keep with the WMQ DBE set I picked up just last week, but I wasn't willing to spend what the guy wanted for it. I am already starting to have some 'Damn-me-and-my-stupid-***-principles' regrets...

I took this pic just for you, RagTopTA! A papa de rellenos tropicale (potato puff stuffed with beef, eggs, and yucca)! Yum!

LUG & SMOKE & ALL: we all have our own methods of shopping garage sales, fleas or estate or auctions so I don't want to put in more information to fuel the fire so to speak (so we end up with another day or week of discussing it like the JERRY GAS CANS POSTS) on the advantages of buying bulk or just picking through. that said those bins of old rusty tools used to be $.10 to $.25 each in my area 40 years ago and the last garage sale i went to I think they were $3 and $5 per tool.

I can say i'm not buying in bulk as much while now since I lost me cheap storage and i've got more than a few old tools.

3Bay: not sure if this helps on the ID of my little tape measure, but it does work better than a new one if I only need 10 foot or less. it has some word left of the diamond FOE that I think is MELLOW, but my new glasses can't read that small unless I have a bright light and magnifier.

Outlaw: I hear you on your faith in TETANUS, but I'm of the belief that what you put in your body to defend off one illness does have side effects and i'll leave it at that. also if my bride has a tetanus shot she dies so there is something in that shot that has a side effect. it's all case by case on what I believe what the doctors tell me and at 62 i'm pretty happy with my health that could always be better but a pill or shot or operation isn't always the answer. I'd really like to use and play with all of these old tools I have for many years to come so if I die tomorrow or 30 years from now I'll do it my way. thanks again for your thoughts and concerns.

ALL: I bought all these and two boxes more at a steel company's closing a few years ago and still need to spiff them up and hang them on my bench. i'll try to pull them all out and put them on the Clamps 101 thread and here's the link in case any of you want to post yours or see what others have posted.

HAHA. Amen, Drives. And just so we're square, I wasn't comparing or assessing collecting methodologies. 'To each his own' and all that. I was assessing selling methodologies and what's right and what's wrong. If a vendor is only going to sell the contents of a box or a bin as a box or a bin, he better announce that loud and clear up front.

LUG: as mentioned you and the rest of the guys have WAAAAY MORE experience dealing with fleas and venders cause they really weren't that popular here like garage sales were. honestly I never felt it was worth my time or the headaches to deal with the guys at the swap meets, but I know they probably did have cool stuff that I could use now. if you like or love doing what you do then i'm the first one to say carry on and best of luck even if there are a few headaches and stressful people to deal with along the way. dealing with some vendors or sales people is certainly a case by case thing, but I try my best to not take advantage of a widow even if she's trying to sell her husband's tools too cheap.

you always seem to pick up some cool stuff and some of the stuff you pass on i'd be willing to buy if the price was right. that said FREE ISN'T FREE and you learned first hand watching your DAD try to find spots for all his stuff and use up valuable space at home or like me rent storage units that do have some costs involved.

ALL: speaking of volume buys (these were free). I had a friend ask me if I could use some unused sandbags he had on pallets at his shop preparing for a flood that didn't happen. since I picked up some FREE bricks a year or two ago I thought it was a good match so my bride is shaking her head again waiting for me to get the bricks and sand put someplace to make her happy.

when I called on the FREE BRICKS ad on CRAIGSLIST the seller asked me how many did I want. 1920's bricks that were an old street in Seattle before becoming a patio 30+ years ago. so a little dirt and sand on them and not perfect edges I asked how many do you have. he said probably 2,000. I said I'd take them ALL.

ok so I didn't realize how many 2,000 bricks were or that he lived on a 15-20 degree sloped one way street that I had to park the 6x12 Uhual trailer on to load them up. it took 3 trips and thankfully his landscaper saw me loading the trailer to the top of the side cause even with 3 or 4 bricks high I barely made the stop sign at the bottom of the hill.

i'm hopefully going to be laying a few bricks around my house this winter cause my bride likes the idea of having huge potted planters and raised beds around the sides of the house.

That's a lot of bricks! LOL Looked like my childhood house when the theater in town went down and we made 5 trips back and forth with dad!

I have a hard time (conscience-wise) with retired vets, too. I think I've said this before, but there's a flea I hit on Wednesdays, and it's also my second stop on Fridays, on Rt. 70 in Lakewood, NJ. Route 70 between the Garden State Parkway and Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station, where I have an office, is chockablock with retirement communities. The first one that went up, probably 20 or 30 years ago now, was called Leisure Village. It's now called Leisure Village East, because there's a Leisure Village West that's about 12 miles away. The whole area in between is called Geezer Village because of that. If you even mention the Rt 70 flea market at another flea market, that's the first thing people call it. That flea market is full of old people selling old people's stuff. It's also a huge Hassidic Jewish area, and they love to shop at flea markets. Most tool guys like me won't waste their time, because it's overcrowded with people selling and buying household stuff, with very meager pickings for anything good. But every once in awhile I'll run into a guy who is a vet, or who worked at the base, or Ft Dix, and he has some hidden gems in the box. You ever watch American Pickers when the guys will come clean with a seller and say his price is TOO LOW!? At my Rt 70 flea is the only time I ever do that. :)

EDIT: And I think your tap might be Keuffel & Esser.
