Hit an estate sale today that had a lot of tools in the ad and included some bigger things like an anvil, vises and a good sized lathe. Well, the prices reflected what they have, sky high. Like $25 for a Proto 1/2 ratchet sky high! In any case, I was able to pick through it a bit and found the following for $15.

Cornwell 1/2 Saltus, Snap-on and Proto sockets, P&C 9/16 wrench, Channellock/Champion DeArmament nut busters, Williams Ratchet, MT1 bit of unknown size (not marked sadly) and Stanley sweetheart drill. There was some really good stuff, but not in my (cheap) range. I will go back for 1/2 price day.

In the reddish wooden box under the damper is an L.B. Miller Screw Extractor Set with four (4) extractors, No. 2 through No. 5. I don’t think the label or the extractors are original to the box. There are more slots than four.
Hey, dumb dumb, the other four slots are for the drills that match those four extractors! :lol_hitti

Not tool related, but here is that stove pipe damper. Call me easily impressed, but I greatly admire the way Griswold conserved work on the casting die with the second patent (405,408, granted on JUNE 18, 1889)! The "PAT'D" and the numerals representing the century and the decade are implied with the dots underneath the corresponding characters in the first patent above it!

Picked up some more hemostats
What are you doing with them/using them for, JM?

but not in my (cheap) range.
Only spendthrifts pay sky high prices, Beemer. Good going. Saltuses are hard to find in any brand, I don't believe I've ever seen a Cornwell. Nice grab.

Lugz: that stamping is interesting. Nice catch.
Thanks, Paul!

Lugz, are the drills left hand? often the left hand drill will take the stuck screw out in the process!
I've heard that about CCW drills, but no, these are step 1 CW drills branded like and fitting the step 2 easy outs in the box.

By the way... I don't know about the rest of you boys, but here on the East Coast, it's dark outside, which means it is now officially Flashlight Flea Market season! At least for the first 15 minutes or so!

Got these last week at an estate sale for $7. Guy looked at them and saw they were junk Craftsman and said a buck each. They are real quality wrenches.

I always like it when people class US made craftsman as :junk" around here most people think they are gold, (due to the warranty - I wonder whats happening with that with the sale of the name?)

Marty: you always find cool stuff and at giveaway pricing too.

Lug: so is there a FLASHLIGHT SPECIAL??? man you are diligent and no wonder you find some old cool stuff. early bird catches the worm so to speak.

ALL: funny you mention Craftsman being **** cause i was at a garage sale last week and the son of the old Boeing machinist that had his dad's tools to sell had the craftsman tools more expensive than Plvmb and Williams.

Ha, I wish! Some of the vendors don't like the early birders poking through stuff with flashlights because they have to get out of their running cars or trucks (the darkness and the cold go hand-in-hand this time of year out here...) waiting for 7AM (the "official" start time). I guess I deserve a sellers' scowl for this habit.

Light or dark, it was a ho-hum haul for me today.

Pic 2 is a LEFT-BEHIND. A vintage tinny Craftsman 6516 carry box. You're not looking at the backside or a mirror image. It was embossed backwards. If you look closer to the top, under the handle, so was the model number. It hurts my head to even think how that was possible. Had to be loose or free-standing double-sided stamping dies, and they got mounted backwards. I almost bought it just for the novelty, but even I am not spendthrifty enough to pay $10 just to point at it and laugh with a few friends every once in awhile.

That’s funny Lugz, I probably would have bought that one. Maybe the lid was just facing the wrong way when shaped. Pic off the web:

Lugz, I bet that they are stamped before the tin is bent to shape, and someone either made a mistake or thought it would be funny.
Yeah, 3bay beat you to it. I was thinking the logo was intended to be stamped, not embossed (raised), and wondering how that would've been possible. :withstupi

Darn, it’s the perfect box for my factory flaw collection of unfinished, mis-stamped, and error tools!
I'll grab it if he shows up again.

Not a sale, but I had a great view out the bus window of miles of tools and parts lost along the highways. Here’s Joe, kindly letting us see the tool forms and workbench of the medieval carpenter.

Hit 4 sales, 2 were a waste. At one sale I picked up a CMAN VV44695 1/2 in for $2.00.
At another, I found the Drill, small headed rubber mallet and 3 wrenches-A ZEB 24 3/4 inch (has a "B" in an outline on it), a Barcalo 9/16, and a Billings #1727 5/8-9/16. All that for $3.00.

The “B” combo is a Bon-E-Con, an economy line made by Bonney. That drill, does it say “Gold Seal” on it? Looks like a Goodell-Pratt / Millers Falls.

Mr. Wonderful, which Morgan Chicago is that?

An awesome haul for a Thursday!!!

Its the 160. I was really hoping it was the 180 but it is in excellent condition. No hammer marks on the jaws or slide. I have to grind off the spray bomb paint to see if the jaws are cast but they are in beautiful condition!

So I went back to the estate sale I went to yesterday, see if I could get any deals. Well, they aren't dealing until tomorrow, so I had to spend a little bit, as I needed...
THE BEAST!

A 12" disc sander, Craftsman, which normally has a 1/4 or 1/3 HP on the back, but this one has a 3/4 HP brute on it. The thing must weigh 100lbs. $75. I almost never see the disc sanders, especially not in this size, so I wasn't going to pass once I thought about
it. Then I stopped at the Restore on my way home, as I had good luck in there the other day.

A Goodell Brothers spiral driver, 4 Stanley brace bits barely used, a P&C 5/8 combo, two brace bit counter sinks and a barely used Kromedge dado set, most of the blades still in the envelopes. Not to bad a $8.50. So, a good day tool wise.

We had a busy day planned so we only hit one estate sale close to home. It wasn’t great but there were a few items to be had. The seller announced that chemicals and paint were free so I loaded up on WD40 and a couple of other cans. The wrenches I found were pretty large. Does anybody have any idea of the meaning of the markings on the 6-3/4” long 1/4” wide cape chisel?

Mr. W: your day's vise haul was AMAZING and even in my prime vise hunting when vises were still available at a decent price you day would be very hard to beat.

I had a big Morgan 160 (142 pounds of good old USA made iron) that I hauled across the border in a back pack and it damn near killed me physically before I handed it off to another GJ member and it looks like you've got a stand for yours that weighs another 150 pounds.

5197 in pretty decent shape are not common and maybe one of the best 5 inch vises you can own for your garage. WELL DONE!!

how can you turn down a Wilton bullet vise if priced right even if it is a Cadet.

WELL DONE SIR!!

Every once in a while you pick something up just because. I doubt I'll ever have a use for a 2 foot long Williams 8041 1-5/8 x 1-7/16 DBE but I just had to have it and the price was right. That, and a Williams S-52 ratchet and a Wright WWII-era sliding tee.

Nice items, Bill. The huge Williams is cool and you finding a wartime Wright Tool in the wild is great. What is the drive size on the sliding tee?

Hit only one sale today, but it was a good one. I spent 23 bucks on-

- a full set of 3/8" metric proto sockets
- a belzer socket set that will require some research
- a Nicholson 4 in hand
-challenger, Thor son, and action 1/4" ratchets
- a proto triple tap
- challenger spinner
-1224 plomb combo
- and the biggest prize... a Plomb dual marked 4" adjustable wrench from the 50 cent bin!

The Norlund hatchet I saved from a junk pile at the house I'm working on.

Mrs LS and I hit Jakes on our way to see her mother and sister, then our daughter’s swim meet. The advertised militaria show was setting up, underwhelming today, plus there had been a light rain, so not many vendors or shoppers, either. Sunday should be better, and I may head back just to see.
For $13, I got a June 15 1964 1/4hp Craftsman 6” grinder, a 6” Klein adjustable, and a 12” Cocoa-Cola branded “golden rule” rule, which I thought was clever, as well as straight.

So the Beast is more beastly than I thought. The motor on it is Mill Start 3/4hp and thus is heavier than a standard motor, at 57lbs. Here is a size comparison I found online with a standard 3/4 motor

This will do some serious sanding!
