So I had some time to actually stop at a sale. Good thing I sold $1700 of vises last weekend and had a little to spent.

First on my way to work, I drove by the estate sale to find parking, and saw this on the side of the road so I snagged it. I love the freebies. Basically a brand new black and decker workmate.

Then the reason i stopped at the sale was because i saw the picture of this bench with vise. I couldn’t tell what it was but it was something.

a0ca19a5bf4cb9816619a64a37c34b8e.jpg

So it was still available and I unbolted it and made a deal with a radio flyer for a total of $40.

Then on my way out I spotted a craftsman carry box with mostly **** tools and a proto rolling chest with the same. The seller wanted $100 so I offered $80 and he took it. I had him hold it and on my way out I noticed there was also a battery charger hidden in the bottom of the chest.

So this is what I got. A little junior 2.5” Columbian vise, old radio flyer, and 2 toolboxes for $120 total.

This is the better stuff in the toolbox. Unibit stepper bits, craftsman punch, small Blackhawk wrenches, Billings wrench, Klein/vaco tools, and some misc us made tools.

Then on my way home I checked new ads and a broken snowblower popped up with make offer. I asked how much and he said he had a $100 offer but he would sell it to the first person with cash. I said I only had half of that and he said he would take $50.

The wheels won’t spin and the owner tries to pull start it and the pull string broke. I took off then let cover at home and looks like a bolt is backed off. The motor spins freely by spinning the flyweel so I’m hoping it’s a quick fix. 960b78a91345cb810a584d429a1946ec.jpg

Cap S, you need a 24-28" back saw for that miter box!

Nice finds today!

I sure do. I’m sure I have one in the saw pile, just have to go look. The only reason that saw is in there is because it came with the miter box. I’m planning on doing a light restoration on it and using it for projects with the kids to teach them how to use it.

Nice grab on that Crescent hacksaw! I recently found one and I'm in love with how it feels in hand. They aren't very common, either.

This is the second one I’ve found. I gave the first one to my neighbor’s son when he was putting together a toolset. I think I’ll hang on to this one. Here it is in an early Smith and Hemenway/Crescent Catalog.

I had some fun and a pretty decent haul at my double early bird this morning...

Pic 1: THE HAUL

attachment.php

While popular as ornaments with folks, I don’t normally pick up stovepipe dampers. I liked the markings on this one.

In the reddish wooden box under the damper is an L.B. Miller Screw Extractor Set with four (4) extractors, No. 2 through No. 5. I don’t think the label or the extractors are original to the box. There are more slots than four. But they are useful.

I'll be posting more about the Blue-Point tap and die set on the tap & die thread and the Snappy thread.

The pressed steel wrench set is really cool. Hercules. Made in Germany. Even though it often seems like vintage tools are out of place there lately, I will be posting more about this on the 'Tools from the Old World' thread (here on General Discussion board).

The DBE wrench is a Vlchek Motorcycle Wrench destined for BB's DBE thread. I think I remember they were an Indian supplier. I hope so, because I have two Indian marked OE wrenches as well as an adjustable. For me, these are the real joys of collecting. Yeah, it's quicker to just run a search on eBay day after day and bid on a Indian toolkit, but finding one wrench with no intent or hope or plan to ever find any others, then finding another one one day, and a few more after that another day, in the span of 4 or 5 years, just feels more gratifying. Again, to me. In a life that's filled with more than enough stubbed toes, empty scratch-offs, and bad mistakes, it's nice to know the lucky star flies over your head every once in a while.

That DOE wrench is a TRUECRAFT FORGED IN U.S.A.. Just a curiosity buy. I've found TRUECRAFT German Zone (postwar) tools, and I know that modern TRUECRAFT was coming out of Japan much later, but I never heard of TRUECRAFT U.S.A.

I'm not an antique tube radio guy, per se, but I couldn’t resist the little wooden Philco with all those vintage college stickers. I've got an Ivy Leaguer who might like it as antique décor some day!

Pic 2: THE LEFT-BEHIND

I would have liked to have had this WARDS MASTER QUALITY ball-pein hammer to keep with the WMQ DBE set I picked up just last week, but I wasn't willing to spend what the guy wanted for it. I am already starting to have some 'Damn-me-and-my-stupid-***-principles' regrets...

Pic 3: THE CULINARY DELIGHT

I took this pic just for you, RagTopTA! A papa de rellenos tropicale (potato puff stuffed with beef, eggs, and yucca)! Yum!

that looks awesome!! Id give it a try! : } I think I found WArds Masters Bal pein myself a while back. And you guys have been killing it lately. I rained for three weekends straight here. 9" of rain total! But, I'm off this weekend and will head to the flea market and some E sales tomorrow! Have a small haul from last week I need to pst as well! coming tomorrow!

Only significant find of the week was this big Wilton C-2. It's in near perfect shape except for some paint damage. $100 from an estate sale:

It was "Small vise day" today - I picked up 2 mini clamp-ons, and a 2-1/2" Reed.

But the first stop had the aviator's glasses, then a bunch of nothing and a guy thst had a bunch of brass hardware I wanted but would only sell all the 15-20 wood cases of hardware in a lot. so he wanted it more than I did...

A estate sale where I got the 3 mini vises, and one is my 5th Colton Patent vise. and my second smallest. Also the Nicholson file card, and a made in Germany wire saw. (wire blades)

I'm heartsick at what I had to leave behind though - a South bend lathe 24" between centers., either 10 or 12"... ON a tool srool bench made for it, in "toll room" condition snf I suspect not used very much. WITH all the tooling! at a USUcK price, so I **** (the bad way) because I have no place to put it... :willy_nil

My consolation is I did pick up a Reed 202-1/2 Vise, (2-1/2" jaws)

Two garage sales today, the first one I had a whole bucket of tools only to find out the dude wasn't selling any tools, he was willing to part with the Haynes welding book, the spool of chain and a 1930 Materials of Engineering textbook. I also talked him into selling the Kennedy chest for $35 and he said I could take the other 3 items with it. The second one I grabbed the pair of planes, a couple pipe wrenches and called it a day.

A bucket of stuff to trash, a can of hardware and randomry to go through at a later date and a TON of vacuuming and the Kennedy chest isn't in too bad shape.

Went back today and this is what I got.

Don’t mind the prices on the tools. I did not pay what they asked.

Good finds guys. Some nice vises, and that Proto roller!

Bagged- your pictures are messing with me. Not sure why but swear the wagon, vise, Craftsman box, Proto box and charger all look like miniatures. Must be the red color. :dunno:

Outlaw - if you ever run across a garden nozzle like the one we had when I was growing up I will let you know. Someone stole it from us after decades. It was brass, nothing fancy, but different. That thing took a beating over the years. Of the probably hundreds I’ve seen I have never ran across another like it either.

Capt- nice Bonney haul!

Ragtop - funny, i stared at the potato balls today in fact! Settled on the empanadas.

Flea finds today:

Buck bros chisel
Wrenches- Plomb dbe, Proto LA dbe, Plomb and Duro Ignition,Mac combo
Sockets- Plomb,Snap On (I think) unmarked 9/32 drive, 3 S-K, another oddball a Mac strut socket.
Screwdrivers- Pair of Klein screwholding, Mac, Wera,Proto stubby, Vaco flip stubby
Mini clamp marked adjustable Chicago

Pretty sure the knurled unmarked 9/32 drive socket is Snap On. Guy gave it to me free, was in with what he considers the **** sockets. :)

Funny, I didn’t find much till almost the end. Had another run in with that weird guy. I picked out a rusty old Mac 3/4 combo, first he tells me $2, then says it’s $3 because it’s a bigger wrench. That’s when he got loud and started flipping through his wrenches again, grabbing rusty old McKaig doe, etc., telling me they are $20 apiece on EBay and he knows what everything is worth. Good for him. I had the Mac wrench and Buck chisel off to the side while looking at his other stuff, he grabs the Mac wrench and says it’s $4 now because it’s old. Greedy S.O.B.! I left the Mac wrench, it was so rusty on one side it was hardly identifiable. I think he saved me on that one.

I got nothing in the way of tools this weekend but did get this great Gerry can on garbage night this past Thursday. There was about a 1/4 gal of gas in it thick as molasses. It has a few dents but in overall good condition.

Non-purchases today: 5” Columbian no205 ($400), 4-1/2” Prentiss no93 ($200), Bear headlamp tester, Companion organizer.
Edit - I am heartily sorry for starting a panic over this Prentiss! I am NOT a vise expert, have NOT memorized the GJ Vises spreadsheet, and IMO, “98” makes as much sense as “93” as a model number for a 4-1/2” jaw (as stated in my original post) vise. (Now, don’t go saying I called this a post vise!)
I do wish I had stacked the Prentiss on top of the 5” Columbian for scale. The two-bit error on my part would have been OBVIOUS.

More non-purchases...
The sodapop-bottle-looking thing caught my eye, VERY HEAVY, guess it’s for loading big artillery shells.

Very slow today. I went early to a sale with plenty of WAY too expensive Snap-on. I ended up with two pieces and a couple of toy Jeeps. The other sale netted a Thorsen screwdriver and a Craftsman dead blow hammer.

I got nothing in the way of tools this weekend but did get this great Gerry can on garbage night this past Thursday. There was about a 1/4 gal of gas in it thick as molasses. It has a few dents but in overall good condition.

Really can't say I've ever gotten excited about a gas can but that is the coolest looking gas can I have ever seen. Nice find. :bounce:

oh man, that Yale keyblank display is awesome!

Yes, and loaded with key blanks, but like most everything I saw, priced to stay. ($195)
About the only thing I that I seriously consideted purchasing was a Stanley 16oz soft-face hammer for $5.

You passed on a Prentiss 98 8.5" 322lb vise for $200? I had new jaws made for mine and it cost more than that.

A couple of good sales and presto, a bunch of good stuff. Indestro 1/2 seems to be missing the socket plug.

Ah, no, maybe it’s a No93, not a 98? As I said, 4-1/2”. I didn’t heft it, but nowhere near 300#.
I did notice how beautiful it was, and took the picture. Such a vise would be purely an affectation in my possession, not a worker. Not that I’m above an affectation, but I simply don’t have $200 to spend on one right now. My initial reaction was, that’s twice what I’d consider paying. If it’s still around when I do have cash like that, yeah. Mrs LS wants a couple living room chairs...and ottomans.

This weekends finds

Made three stops, the first I picked up the refrigeration manual (I went to trade school for HVAC/R) and the hook ruler (made by PEC and pretty high quality) $2. The hardy (to big for my little anvil) sweetheart marking gauge and unmarked bevel I paid a bit, it looked like she needed the money more than me. $8. The rest was from an estate sale clean out and was $10. Central Tool's calipers, Mayhew pipe reamer, Machinery's handbook, and handy pocket guide, Stanley (England) 80 scraper, unmarked Plumb bob, a few brace bits, and a homemade punch. The die stock is homemade and quite good. All in all a nice day.

I made a stop a Habitat for Humanity, and they had recently restocked the tool shelves. I left many items behind that were not in my areas of interest, including a pair of New Britain arc-joint pliers.

Plomb and Proto screwdrivers and a Plomb 9/16 combo.

DBE's: Barcalo 13/16x7/8, Vlchek WBH3032 and WBH 2428, Westcraft 5/8x3/4 offset, PowerKraft 9/16x5/8 with a forged-in "B"

DOE's: Superrench tappet 1094 3/4x7/8, Indestro Super T3 5/8x11/16, Long C Craftsman 1731 with C1 and N4 forging marks, Vlchek W2426 3/4x13/16, Billings & Spencer 1107 engineers wrench.

Hinsdale BR 24 tubing wrench 3/4.

After a trip to the big pick n pull sale netted me a $4.75 set of brake pads I stopped atop a grassy knoll to watch the sun set and check my Craigslist. The free workmate sounded like the best bet, so I went by and threw it in my truck.

All the feet were there but dry and crumbly, and the wood is hosed, but I'd been wanting an aluminum one.

Nice find on the reed. I have the 102-1/2. I hate when those cheap lathes come up and I have no place for another lathe as well.

Non-purchases today: 5” Columbian no205 ($400), 4-1/2” Prentiss no98 ($200), Bear headlamp tester, Dunlap organizer.
Edit - Sorry, no, not Dunlap - Companion.

A prentiss 98 is an 8.5” Vise. Did you really not purchase it?
