Ah, no, maybe it’s a No93, not a 98? As I said, 4-1/2”. I didn’t heft it, but nowhere near 300#.
I did notice how beautiful it was, and took the picture. Such a vise would be purely an affectation in my possession, not a worker. Not that I’m above an affectation, but I simply don’t have $200 to spend on one right now. My initial reaction was, that’s twice what I’d consider paying. If it’s still around when I do have cash like that, yeah. Mrs LS wants a couple living room chairs...and ottomans.

That makes more sense

Somewhere a few pages back, I posted that I bought a “perfect”-style screwdriver. Turned out to be a German-made import, by the Chicago-based Damon Raike & Co. in the 1920s. Triggered a memory, and I dug out an earlier-acquired monkey wrench made in France. The wrench, in turn looks nearly identical to a PA-manufactured Girard Wrench Mfg Co.

Is there a doctor in the house? Slim pickins today at the flea, although the vintage mechanics' stethoscope was a neat surprise. The swivel socket is a cad-plated Plomb WF-77 (3/8-inch drive 11/16" opening). The deep socket with the tommy bar hole is a script Herbrand "VAN CHROME" 1/2-inch drive 13/16" opening. I forget what size the Crafty (H) is and I'm too lazy to go look. HAHA. The Bonney is a 3/4-inch drive HD32 (1" opening), also cad-plated.

My greatest coup!
SWMBO has had a Craftsman bowsaw since she bought it new in 1977. A couple of weeks ago, she started talking about needing another, so I went out to get one. Surprise, they don't make them like that anymore. I tried alternate sources and yesterday found an estate sale with a picture of one hanging on the garage wall. I couldn't read the label, but Crafty is the only chrome saws I've ever seen, so at 10:45 this morning I was standing in line waiting for the sale to open at 11. Third out of 11, I was the first into the garage and there it was! It's only a 30incher, but otherwise identical to her 36". A few minutes of steel wool and WD40 got the rust off and had it looking almost like new. She's delighted!

Of course I couldn't ignore the rest and ended up with the booty shown. A couple of Craftsman =V= DOE's and a Long C long DBE, a couple of nice files, and a bunch of Indestro DOE's. The 15/16 combo Indestro is modern but the rest might be from WWII. Several are unplated, and the more silvery colored ones don't look like chrome - maybe cadmium? All of these are also marked with the old-time wrench numbers- 31, 27, 729 and 724A. And an oddity I grabbed for a friend who is fond of English motorcycles - an English made Superslim. Never 'eard of it, mate.

The total tab was $13.

Picked these up among other stuff yesterday at a estate sale

A Proto 5212 lug nut wrench and a P&M MFG. Co. tool for installing or removing pipe by wedging against the inside of the pipe I think.

That Proto four-way is cool. Somewhere on GJ is a thread where it is postulated that SK was the only outfit putting chrome on lug wrenches in the mid 20th century.....not so evidently!

Like a ghost, I disappear for months and suddenly come back causing trouble.

1/2 HP Cman block grinder with light, original quench tray, and even the rubber feet that came with it originally - $20

Any other day it would have been snapped up as soon as the sale opened, however, it was sitting in the back of a crowded workbench with plastic bags filled with cords, hardware, sandpaper, etc so it must have been easily overlooked by anyone who would have wanted it by only seeing bags filled with common stuff all over the workbench. Good for me

I would say it hasn't, besides the marking on the left side its practically scratch free and it runs with about a 100th of the vibration that my 1/3 HP one does.

Picked up this puppy at the antique fair at PDX Expo center. Ten bucks to park, 16 to enter and 3 hours of walking made for great day out and about.

Nice box, 2 beefy handles and labeled as spares for the Butterworth System.

View media item 87801
Must have been heavy. I was pretty sure this had something to do with nuclear bombs or something.

View media item 87799
Top line says spare parts and then can't make out much more. This was under 2 layers of flaking paint that I scrapped off.

Any way looked it up on Google and the Butterworth System is device used to clean tanks in marine and industrial settings.

I'm telling the grand kids bomb parts.:beer:

LST 850 was a US Navy Landing Ship Tank vessel commissioned in 1944 and used in the Pacific. Participated in several flanking landing operations against the Japanese on Okinawa and hauling troops and cargo in support of operations on Okinawa and the occupation of Japan. Used as a target ship and sunk in the mid 50s.

Thanks that's too cool. Wonder how it ended up in Portland, Oregon?

They built WW2 ships in Portland and right across the Columbia River in Vancouver, Washington. When I worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, I gas tested tanks. The bilge waste oil tank and the sanitary tanks were nasty. I was there to hang the do not enter tags. Then later to clear the tanks for entry and hot work. The guys that mucked those out didn't last very long.

Thanks for the information.

well I have some stuff I need to post! Here we go! Slim pickings for a Sat this last weekend. I went to the Flea and several G sales and E sales. Ended up finding a Stanley Sweetheart Screwdriver at the flea, then what I thought was its twin at an E sale down the road. Upon inspection at home, the second was a Bell System, but the same exact driver, made by Bridgeport. What are the odds I thought... Also found a Model A -ish Planter at an older woman's G sale. She was surprised I knew what a model A was, and even more surprised to find out there are 2 in my garage. She asked if maybe someday I could come by and give her a ride in one. I said you bet I will! I saved her address she seemed to be around 80 to me so I think it would be a good thing to do for her. Also....TailGate Tacos while getting my oil changed : )

Also, a Blackhawk 1/4 & 3/8 socket set only missing a few sockets for $5, a Plomb wrench, Bonney extension, a T50 socket, and Penens pliers.

Truth Sockets
Bonney swivel and tiny DOE
Craftsman Circle H stuff
20" Williams C Clamp
Plomb LA 1/4 box set with a few Plomb tools but lots of SK and other assorted 1/4 stuff

6x Carl Zies lense wipes
Sml Halon Fire Extinguisher

IdahoMan: I would recommend at least 36 inches. But we need pics! It's a requirement! :)

You got it Lugz. :)

I gave it a Muriatic Acid bath and it of course re-flashed on the rust. I'll vinegar and wire-wheel it at a later time I guess. (on the first pic, there is a "14" on top-right)

Here's couple pics of Other stuff, some I may have got posted some not. That cabinet has a lot of full drawers od good stuff aswell. Garage is running out of room! ; )

I rarely get to gs's but I hit 2 on saturday. Hi-lites are :

1st. pic:
9 blacksmith hardys
Gedore + Plvmb pipe wrenches
Gilpin Hammer with 3" sq face
Groz small Machinist Vise 2"x2"
Bull Nose center morse 3
9 collets (missing 7/16) with homemade draw bar to fit my atlas

2nd pic:
alu pipe wrench + offset one
Very cool big *** TRIMO monkey wrench
Walters and Brades Double Bit Axe, adze, heads
Warrior 1" NF tap + die
4lb sledge head, 48 oz and 40 oz ball pein heads

3rd pic some hex steel, 1 1/2" ball bearings, steel level, rules, etc
and not seen are about 50 lb of steel flat + round bar scraps

4th pic
Misc. socketry mostly P&C, a few blackhawk, plvmb; note 2 sq. drives, a 5/8" + 1/2"

5th pic

tire bead breaker set from the 40's? I think that center tool will be a blessing on my motorcycle tires.

6th pic

Starrett angle finder tool. I want to look this one up and see if I can resurrect it. It's been neglected badly.

No screamin deals here really but the bull nose center and the colletts with draw bar have been on my want list for... years so justified to me about $200 cnd for the lot.

2oolhound: I'm pretty sure that the "Gilpin Hammer with 3" square face" is a blacksmith's flatter. Like a blacksmith's fuller, but flat, not the same shape. What brand is the speeder with the doorknob end? Blackhawk? And what brand is the extension with the rotating grip? P&C?
