Wow, you guys are killing it! Only one ES worth slipping out for today, but for $5 I'm happy - Williams and Brinks & Cotton clamps, Channel lock cutter/crimper, no name min duck bills, Oxwal but made in Germany Mini Lineman's, Bushnell Mini Tripod, Brass fittings, a clock key, and a 2 ft Bar clamp

Generally Oxwall imported real cheaply made and low quality tools, but these pliers are one of a few exceptions. Well made and well fitted out of quality steel.

The tripod folds down real smal but the head is the cool part as it clamps onto a flat plate - That can be unclamped and clamped to a car/rig's open window for a spotting scope or camera.

ALL: these Makita 10 inch chop saws are almost indestructible so when I saw this 20+ year old one that is like new condition at a good price I had to pick it up even though i have a couple others. this one has the guard so i'll probably keep it at my daughter and son in law's home so if they use it then they might be a bit safer than using one of my other ones without a guard.

usually these are rusted from sitting outside or in the back of trucks, but they usually all still keep on working. I had the first one I owned for maybe 30 years before one of my young friends talked me out of it when I bought my big Dewalt compound miter. the Dewalt is too big to bring out to just cut some 2 by's so having another makita here and and my kids house will be handy.

hope you are all having a great weekend.

i got 2 of those L1011's 35 years ago, still have them. they're old school great 4 smaller stuff. Heavy as hell, which was opposite of the norm back then.

looking closer u got aluminum backrest, mine r cast iron.

Picked these up at a yard sale that was posted on CL.
A China rotary vise, got the box of chain for the Galv one and the wood box with a vise in it.

It’s a Parker 4X, 5-3/4” wise jaws and its heavy. I haven’t had a chance to mess with since I’ve been at work.
There’s a Armstrong c clamp and a couple of Proto wrench’s in the box.

I have been avoiding going to sales lately because I need to clean, sort and sell the excess of what I already have.

But I had to run the bank and passed by a garage sale so had t stop on the return trip. Not much for tools but I did pick up a flannel shirt which I need for the weather!

duddly: That was a nice haul! Love the little tins. Your unmarked midget nut spinner set might be SK. You should post it in the 'Show your 1/4 drive' thread. Vintage board.

I picked up a second Starrett 443 socket set from ebay for less than I could buy parts to complete mine. So I will be putting together my keeper set this weekend.
The strategic calculations of a collector of the highest order! I am envious, duds. As I said when you picked up your first set, the Starrett set is one of the sets I would like to add to my wood box era Roaring 20's collection.

duddly said:
Question- one set of the sockets is ALL Mossberg including the spark plug socket. Did someone do a great job of putting together replacement Mossberg sockets, or did some of the Starrett kits possibly ship with Mossberg sockets?
I am on record in several places here (including your first Starrett find post) saying that I think AA is dead wrong on this. They think the sockets are replacements; I am positive that Mossberg was making sockets for many private label brands as a matter of course. In some cases (e.g., Syracuse, Starrett, etc) the private label brands had their own unique designs for the ratchet and other handles to turn the sockets. In other cases (e.g., Triumph, etc) they were nothing more than a front office entity with a fancy name and decal to slap on a box filled with nothing but Mossberg sockets and unbranded or Mossberg offshoot handles (e.g., the W. & M. Co. ratchets and "[W/M]" extensions). I have been finishing off some research and plan to post a little study on this when I post my Triumph and Syracuse sets in my Early Roaring 20's thread.

I have been avoiding going to sales lately because I need to clean, sort and sell the excess of what I already have.
:+1:

And, my cash is getting low. As I have said before, I like to run in the black, spending other people's money. But I'm running on fumes right now, so I need to sell some stuff.

Good time of year to review my Little Green Book and the thread and start picking some prize winners! :bounce:

That looks like a black powder tool. A look at the squeezed area when open would help.

thanks it gives me something to research! Half the fun of old tools is the research!

I had to take a package to the Fedex store today and saw in an estate sale in my town, so I thought I'd stop off and see what they had. The garage was crowded and dirty but I found a few prizes in the cobwebs. I moved on to the basement and found a few more goodies tucked away in an old cabinet. Here's what I left with for ten bucks:

Dust pan and hand brush because I can't find the one I keep in the old garage.

A bunch of adjustables:
Billings Vitslloy 77-12
Utica 10"
Two Utica 6", one marked 90-6 and clearly a better quality wrench than the other
Proto Clik-Stop 706-SL 6"
Diamalloy 4"

Stanley Yankee No 45 push drill with a bunch of reamer bits in the handle

Two Trow & Holden 2-lb hammers

Millers Falls No 48C hack saw--cool handle

Electric tie iron with a 1917 patent date

Benjamin Moore paint can opener and pour spout

Triangular file

New-in-box Hax-a-con 24S 60-watt soldering iron--never been used!

Handful of DBE wrenches for the collection416dc75f73ec1676964b7cc3dc0f95ed.jpgcde6342a21adf2b14b58530cb7cbf593.jpg9ff9da22b252dc9cd145159e95f4d433.jpgc0a878ee0d9fa1be16c857313e7e07a8.jpg79187ee52198bbbaf35737d7b2049331.jpgfbdabcb4f33ad84598d2e898f8e5908a.jpg

Duddly,

Those look like tubing bending pliers? the support on the handle looks like it is for leverage and the paint wear marks in the jaws look like something is always bent one way in them. Brake or fuel lines, old HVAC, refrigeration etc?

Strapping tool?

or, as a standard Garage Journal response to an unknown tool: "must be used for jewelry making..."

Yesterday, I helped a buddy clean his garage. Most of his tools are rusty harbor freight, but I rescued a few cool things. Petersen vice grips, Barcalo 6" adjustable and dbe, lectrolite combo, Craftsman -v- ratchet, plomb we 102 and proto la chisel and small combos.

Made a few stops today.
One netted a snap-on ferret f-4-d speeder with an E code, a fv4a speeder, a plomb 8181, a 1" Starrett, a western auto wood screwdriver, a long c 1/4 breaker bar and hook rule, and an interesting 1/4" refrigeration ratchet marked "imperial brass, Chicago". All for 5 bucks.

attachment.php

A Latching hinged bracket, A silver bell for SHMBO, Router Compass Guide, wood box that I'll use in camping after cleanup and repair. Brook stone/Skew driver Angle head driver. All the above for $7

attachment.php

A last estate sale: Beat wood box (a regular re seller actually tried to take it out of my hands as I was opening it... I told him to back off.)

attachment.php

Re-arranged, its mostly complete for drive tools about half the sockets are missing LUGZ -is this in your era wheel house?

attachment.php

Sooo jealous of the pocket microscope, Outlaw. I had one I bought at the Corning Glass Museum as a kid. Very handy on a hike; haven’t seen it in two decades.

Mrs LesserSon came home with groceries and informed me (against her better jedgement) that the Super Gigantic Garage Sale was in progress at the Allentown Fairgrounds! Off I went. Admission $4. Total purchases $14. Here’s the totality; I’ll add the highlights as I sort them out. Most of it was Taiwanium, but a few USA, too.
Only real disappointment was, I found the guy that had two Vlchek slipjoint pliers last year for $1ea. But the “flying V” pair was gone. Ah well...
I spotted the Bonney stubby first. This little Oxwall pliers also caught my eye, though I could not read it before cleaning; made 1945-1949 in occupied Germany, British Zone. And the real prize today, for my Utica display project: a 511-6. I wish John Gaughan hadn’t been quite so possessive. I suppose I could sand it down and reblue, but it doesn’t bother me that much.

Nice. Used to go to a similar fairgrounds event, the World’s Largest Yard Sale. Always a fun time but super busy.

Outlaw, missed the MF wrench first time around. Looks like Millers Falls. Likely Proto family made as their ratchets are a Penens/Fleet/Proto style.

Outlaw, you are having a good November. First the Packer (Ray) socket set, now this!

My wheelhouse is 1915 to 1925, pressed steel era leading into very early detachable cold-broached heavy walled forged socket era. This set is actually to the right of that. Probably well into the 1930's, by the looks of that fairly sleek-looking speeder. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the box is home-made. Most of these knock-off sets (unmarked pieces) came in steel attache style cases. Maybe you can inspect it more and see if it looks factory to you. The speeder does look NB (as 3bay suggested). The sockets don't, though. They are looking Hinsdale or early Duro maybe. I have to look at it more. It's not in the same class as the Packer (Ray) set, which is special. Please drop the other pieces (Drive stud on Sliding Tee, and the connector, if that's what it is) in some Evap-O-Rust and then take pics. They may help identify it.

I found the guy that had two Vlchek slipjoint pliers last year for $1ea. But the “flying V” pair was gone.
Gah! :(

There was a local used tool store in town that I wasn't even aware of until the owner retired and started selling off his inventory through a local online auction house. It's too bad, it looked like they had some good stuff all the way from large machine tools down to small hand tools.

Anyway, I was browsing through one of their last auctions and saw a box of screwdrivers that had one I needed for my collection of Stanley Workmaster screwdrivers. Of course, I had to buy the whole box to get that one (the box cost me $11); some of the others were pretty junky but there were some interesting things in there so overall I thought it was worth the price.

Here's the one I wanted. These stubby drivers are pretty hard to find so I couldn't pass this one up.

attachment.php

There were a bunch of no name screwdrivers in various condition levels. However, most of them look to be of decent quality so if anyone can ID the brands by how they look I'd like to know (I think the grey stubby in the lower left corner is Harbor Freight or their equivalent.)

attachment.php

There were some decent name brands. The horizontal ones are all Stanley, although the one at the top is pretty rough. The red one on the left is a Millers Falls, the two small pocket drivers are a Master Mechanic and a True Test.

attachment.php

There were a handful of those little nesting screwdrivers. Unfortunately, only the one at the top has the full set and the second smallest one in the set has a big chunk missing out of its blade. The other three are just singles; if anyone collects them and is looking to fill up a set, let me know.

attachment.php

Finally, I thought these were interesting - none of them have any markings, but they all have metal handles and they look pretty beefy. Again, if anyone has any idea on their brands let me know.

Went to a tag sale last weekend just for these two finds from the online pics. Stihl HS 45 hedge trimmer and a pair of folding ramps. Trimmer $40 and ramps $20 didn't even attempt to haggle. Now, I don't have to mess with cords especially since I nicked my 100 foot cord this year and I can get rid of my 8 foot wood ramps. :bounce:

I cleaned up the extensions to see if there are any markings. None other than Made in USA and same on on the speeder...

On the box and whether it is factory: On close inspection, It's almost certainly a home made box.

Went to an estate sale yesterday at lunch, not too much in the way of tools but found two Millers Falls keyhole saws, a combination square, roofing hatchet, Thorsen and Powr Kraft wrenches and a complete set of open end Indestro wrenches all for $6. Struck out for tools at the ReStore today, but did find a Timex rotating display case and another plastic display case for my diecast collection for $15. Last two pictures show my latest eBay find of 7 more Millers Falls spiral and ratcheting screwdrivers including a Buck Roger's model for the ever growing collection.030aca4e882ad8869d8449c816abf7c5.jpg5726746ae09bc7efbd8121413d92abec.jpg934e3e9d5e0195cc47796a59205442f7.jpg66dd5217c74460a51f57482c3e4219dd.jpg0856255f244f44cd47e741d6f7775265.jpg419a99f121da5f038d558b5a4b5be7cc.jpg

That Buck Roger's spiral is cool!

I picked up a big 12-inch crowntop Craftsman radial arm saw from Offerup. The good news is that I got it for $40. The bad news is that this saw sat out in the weather for a while. There's surface rust on all the bare metal and the pivot column in the back actually had a column of ice inside that was slowly melting and dripping onto the floor. The worse news is that this 12" saw is not eligible for the recall (I messed that up :-( ).

So, I've hosed it down with WD-40 and I'll see if there's a usable saw under the crust or will I part it out.dd0ab70133d98b63225da9695bf16a71.jpg49d030b1a2f2ff6d635f8022f7cfc8c0.jpg3fc1715ee0e44130162faedbaa3ea7f0.jpg62a15ffe6195ef7d09e100507d0b7078.jpgfc5e915b667b4c8f69d546ca379ec597.jpg

Sooo jealous of the pocket microscope, Outlaw. I had one I bought at the Corning Glass Museum as a kid. Very handy on a hike; haven’t seen it in two decades.

This little Oxwall pliers also caught my eye, though I could not read it before cleaning; made 1945-1949 in occupied Germany, British Zone.

LS I'm really liking the Pocket microscope! Its surprisingly powerful! I stripped some phone wire, and got it focused any the 30 ga(?) wire looks like LARGE copper pipe! Wish I could get a pic through it! The wire covered 1/3 the aperture.

I also got a pair of those Oxwall pliers today, and have another pair I bought some time back. NOT marked British zone! One marked Germany, the other West Germany.

I have a third pair NOT marked Oxwall (Who was just an imported) with no knurled handles and just marked West Germany

So, the last big swap of the year was today, and it is the one in my town. So, I was there at opening, picking up what I could find. Also, hit a couple estate sales on my way home, picking up a few things:

P&C and Blue Point wrenches; P&C, Plomb deep, Snap-on, long C and Challenger sockets; Plomb LA woody driver (need to regrind the tip)

Some sandpaper and a couple good books.

A military style VOM (need to dig up some leads and put a new battery in to check if it works) Snap-on G ratchet (had to buy a cheap set to get it) and a Craftsman set.
Also did some horse trading with Smokeshadow, who showed up a little later.

Klein tools thermos, Snap-on pocket ruler, Blue Point wrench and a Flying Lady socket box. I traded him a P&C socket box and 1 1/16 wrench of the same maker.
Oh, that Craftsman box?

A near unused Long C circle H set, with the golden oil still on it. I gave $20 for it and didn't even try to bargain.

Some nice Saturday hauls posted today. I only had a brief window for the flea this morning, but dug the following out of a grimy box with some old machinist's tools.

Brown & Sharpe combination with 45 degree attachment - ugly but in good working order, unmarked perfect handle driver, a well used Stanley chisel, and the skeleton of a small perfect handle driver (minus the perfect handles).

Anyone recognize the markings on the small driver? Interesting that the "Cs" would be hidden under the handle. "German(y)" stamped near the blade.

Well to say the least today was a good day! Went to the swap meet in Albany Oregon and today was quality not quantity day! I met Bmwrd0 at the door and we traded a few items like the pictured p&c socket box, large p&c combo wrench. We then headed in and my first picture was the pictured craftsman vise 05191. I walked up to the seller and asked to much and was kinda afraid he would price it high but he said $60 and I nearly broke my arm ripping my wallet out! Has mostly original paint and the jaws are fairly nice! No cracks or caveman marks!

We proceeded to walk around and picked up a few misc wrenches and sockets and then he left but not before pointing out a plomb Los Angeles socket box. It needs straightened but all welds and hinges are intact! Scored that for $4 and am on cloud 9 as I have none. Next I bought the proto flying lady carry box 100r for $10 since I have wanted one for years even though someone stood on the crest and dented it

Got a nice proto slide hammer and a couple misc nos Mopar boxes since I am a big time Chrysler guy! Got a bunch of misc proto, plomb and p&c sockets and wrenches. Also got the sweet western giant made 1/2 ratchet that I believe is made by bog ? Also got a 3/8 drive rhft that I had to pony up for at $25 but the seller would not take less.

Also got one of my unicorns a p&c tire iron for $1! I have been looking for one for years!

Picked up a DA sander and a box of insulated/Adel clamps. The DA needs a good cleaning and I need to find a manual for it. 5 bucks for all.

Outlaw, on the wood-box sockets, they look just like a set I have that I finally decided were Duro. I can't find the reference I used. The straight-line knurls and the dash, rather than the / in the fractional marking are the determining feature. These markings indicate that they are late 20's to early 30's.

Loving that P&C tire iron... I was going to stay home today and finish up some restorations.... but... you never know when something is going to pop up unexpectedly!

I think ThreeBay is correct. Those sockets are 1930s New Britain Machine. Maybe Lugz was thinking of a different era/style (with the cross-hatch knurl) when he said they didn’t look right.
