I think ThreeBay is correct. Those sockets are 1930s New Britain Machine. Maybe Lugz was thinking of a different era/style (with the cross-hatch knurl) when he said they didn’t look right.
Yes, I was. In fact, I don't think I've ever had that kind of simple ribbed knurling in my head as NB. That pretty much seals it. Either the box rusted out or the previous owner was not the first owner or who knows. Cool set either way.

Smoke, that P&C 4way is one of my unicorns also. Congrats

Thanks. I grinned like the Cheshire Cat when they told me the price[emoji16]

All - forgot to post pictures of the puller I got yesterday. Proto Los angels labeled and the box is red wrinkle finish inside and out. Most of the paint is intact and box is straight and not rusty. It even includes the puller brochure that proto sold with their pullers that is labeled proto Los Angeles. Brochure has damage to the backside but is better than nothing

It is weird that my Proto puller set is in a Proto LA box but isn't marked LA on the tooling, but yours is marked LA but the box is later...

I believe mine is a mixture of parts and is a late proto la... the box is wrinkle finish , not smooth like the later ones and a few pieces are marked proto la while the main puller and screw are just labeled proto. The brochure also says proto la on it. If I had to guess I would say they where using up old inventory to put together sets. We know that plomb did not have a hard and fast drop dead date on production designs and logos and intermixed both new and old logos all the time during periods of transition [emoji51]hence a certain famous lawsuit that created the name proto. In terms of the box not being labeled, you can see the outline of the logo but no evidence of a logo ever being present. I have a top chest with the same wrinkle finish that has the spot for the logo but no label.

Yeah, that was pretty much what I was thinking too. No need to do a switch, they are both bits of history. And use - though I doubt I will ever be pulling a hub at this point in my life...

But that swap was definitely a good one.

Outlaw, on the wood-box sockets, they look just like a set I have that I finally decided were Duro. I can't find the reference I used. The straight-line knurls and the dash, rather than the / in the fractional marking are the determining feature. These markings indicate that they are late 20's to early 30's.

Thanks Prov!

On further review, I agree NB - Most parts of this map to 1938 or later, (double square sockets as AA calls then (8 pt), but the swivel is a complete orphan. None similar shown. (It as a tight gap head to head, and is MUCH fatter)

I may have a ratchet for this, I'll have to look... EDIT: Nope, but I found a similar Duro...

This set was likely made in the early to mid 1930s, based on the inclusion of double-hex sockets but square rather than double-square sockets. Still earlier sets would likely have included hex sockets, and by 1938 the None Better catalog was specifying double-square sockets for this set.

Thanks Guys!

I bought just enough at the swap meet today to fill a cargo pocket.
-most of a 3/8" narrow band sk socket set
-a 3/8" sk Diamond ratchet. I have too darn many of these, but they're always too cheap to pass up.
-3 small proto LA wrenches
- 4 ignition sized Williams "superrench's"
-long c doe
- metric craftsman ignition wrenches
- yet another "S.R." Socket. This one is a 7/16 in 1/2" drive.

I am really starting to wonder if it isn't Sears Robuck. Falls into the same time line as the WF contact and when Craftsman stuff was made by Plomb. Nice finds.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrenches 3060, 3061, 3070

look what followed me home for $20 - my new flea market wagon! this thing is crazy sturdy - I believe it may have been restored at some point with a heavier gauge of metal. I was told that it has been in this form in a garage for the last 40 years.

I only found this one for reference - it is nice and shiny with chrome and red paint I don't have. I think the maker (of both) "Angeles" made stuff for daycares and such so it really was built to last.

I pulled some Ideal Ind Inc screwdrivers from yesterday’s purchase. The 1959 patent for the rubber grips is here. I noticed some had a socket in the handle. A few years ago I watched an electrician twist wire nuts using just such a technique, and had looked for one off and on in various stores. Getting a close-up look at this, it appears to be after-market. On the other hand, the bottom of the bore is flat, unlike a typical drill tip. Anyone know for sure?

Trying to get caught up from the last few weeks. Vises include a 4" 974 Parker, 4" swivel jaw swivel base, Prentiss with a strange base swivel pin lifter I haven't seen before, 4" Athol, 4" Wilton Shop King with pipe jaws, 3-1/2" Craftsman made in USA, 3" Reed I think I already posted here, and a clamp on that I thought might be a Stanley, but I guess it isn't. Last pic shows markings on top of the slide, anybody recognize it?

Also shown is a new made in Poland lathe chuck, says Dayton, suspect it is actually a Bison, and a Palmgren XY cross slide table. Then there is a new wire wheel, Vise Grip bar clamp, 1-1/2"-8 lathe chuck back plate, handwheel, and a bunch of oil, actually had 10 qts. of the Toyota oil, but used 6 in a customers oil change. How about that center drill for a bit brace, weird, never saw one of those before.

Forgot to mention the Lisle tap socket set, missing the # 4 socket, if anyone has an extra they want to sell, let me know.

454, I'm pretty sure that's a German made vise. I picked one up this past year. Looks identical to mine from the clamp up. Slight diffs in the clamp area. Mine is roughly 2-1/2" in the jaws.

Craftsman 16" chainsaw

I went to a friend's yard sale. He was moving out of state. He had an urban acre lot, pretty-unusual for south Florida, and if it's anywhere decent, $$$. This was across the street from the Country Club of Ft. Lauderdale, and a 2-story home.

He bought the chainsaw to clear his lot after Hurricane Andrew (1992) because of the mature trees that came-down, and after that, it sat on a shelf in his garage. I got it for $2.00 which I had to 'complain-about,' as it wasn't running. He said it probably hadn't seen 10 hours of use since the purchase. The motor easily turned-over, but with compression, I didn't bother doing anything-else with it at the 'point-of-purchase,' and took it home.

It's a Sears Craftsman 16" bar, no anti-kickback clutch, so you know it's pretty-old. The model is 358-357181, looking it up, it is a 16" but they also sold it as a 18" bar being optional.

I threw-in a new plug, a new air filter (piece of foam), tore-down completely the carb, cleaned it, and since the gaskets stayed together in the stripping, I put it back together. It needed a new fuel line, the old one looked like a barely-flexible hard-plastic rod. The gas tank looked clean, I mixed some fresh pre-mix, turned it over a few times with the ignition off, and then turned it on and gave a pull, which got a good 'sneeze' out of it. Another pull, it ran briefly, I opened the choke a bit from full-choke, and the next pull, it started right up.

I've cut with it with the OEM chain and bar, but I bought a new chain and bar in an 18" size, and it works very-well. I'm happy with my 'investment.'

As a former electrician there were screw drivers made so the end could hold a wire nut. There also drivers made that held a wire nut in the end where the screw driver blade would be. And there were offset screw drivers that held wire nuts so you could really spin those wire nuts on! All were Klein or Greenlee made that I have seen. But I bet Ideal made them too.

Thank you Rick, I'd say that's it. Pretty sure the jaws are 3", and since Stanley took over those Jersey vises, which was my first thought, looks like a match to me. Wonder what that little logo means?

There was an estate sale close by in its second day, so I darted out to check it out. I passed on a shiny, low-mileage Harley Davidson for six grand, but picked up these two jack stands, two partial boxes of woodscrews and a 10-inch Crescent adjustable for ten bucks.853232a2523e2d8c32d0de77aab0c53b.jpg

Not a garage sale, but a "going out of business, get a box and dig" gift. A fellow I know lost his lease and decided to call it a day, giving me first pick at the tools that remained from him and his father. An assortment of older items including a Wen soldering gun, Xacto, Fuller, Dunlap, a lead mallet, a couple of ball pein hammers, a bronze hammer head, small Rigid pipe wrenches, Cresent pliers, a pair of Berg side cutters with replaceable jaws that Google tells me they are for piano wire.
Proto 3/8" speeder, made in England saw, an auger/awl, a few BMW wrenches, a few more Gedore wrenches and a GE branded hex key set. Misc. files, parts, chisels, screwdrivers and a cantelever tool box with a name I don't recognize. Thank you Chuck, I appreciate the opportunity.

We proceeded to walk around and picked up a few misc wrenches and sockets and then he left but not before pointing out a plomb Los Angeles socket box. It needs straightened but all welds and hinges are intact! Scored that for $4 and am on cloud 9 as I have none. Next I bought the proto flying lady carry box 100r for $10 since I have wanted one for years even though someone stood on the crest and dented it

Got a nice proto slide hammer and a couple misc nos Mopar boxes since I am a big time Chrysler guy! Got a bunch of misc proto, plomb and p&c sockets and wrenches. Also got the sweet western giant made 1/2 ratchet that I believe is made by bog ? Also got a 3/8 drive rhft that I had to pony up for at $25 but the seller would not take less.

Also got one of my unicorns a p&c tire iron for $1! I have been looking for one for years!

Smoke, heck of a haul. P&C 4 way, Craftsman flex head, and a Western Giant! Darn good day.

Thanks, still can’t believe I got those quality items in just a few hours. Vise was my first pick and the proto la puller set was my last purchase from a tool seller who has decent stuff but is normally high priced. I negotiated him down to the price I wanted to pay and then left [emoji51] I only paid full price on the vise and the tire iron. Everything else I negotiated on

Rag- I am super excited to join the p&c lug wrench club! Now we just need to find you a p&c tool mobile

Recent eBay find. $10 shipped. I like to shotgun bid lowball prices on several dozen eBay finds that I like and then sit back and see if I win anything. 95% of the time I don't, but when I do it usually turns out like this. NC sizes from 1/4" to 1". All still very sharp, most look completely unused.

Have not been out hitting sales in a while with all my kids sports eating most of my free time and money. Did pick up a Stihl 044 and an 11x16ft wresting mat if that counts lol

Hit estate sales in Lynnfield and Sudbury last weekend. SWMBO was interested in some high-level furniture. The house in Lynnfield did not look like it would contain such, but it turned out to be the family home of a recently deceased lawyer, and all his expensive stuff was inside.

Someone grabbed a decent vise off the workbench before my arrival. I found a 160 watt glue gun (Made in USA) which I've now tried, and it spits out copious amounts of hot glue. Should work better than my tiny China alternative. I walked away from an Indestro set, the kind where all the sockets fit on an "L" hex key. Have no real use for it.

I drove by that house while off to help my friend renovate his condo. I knew I should have stopped and looked but was busy!

My daughter and I got to be the first to go through an old SO/Mac rollaway plus 2 or 3 other small boxes that we saw on a FB ad. Picked up this nice little mixed lot for $30.b18992f87014baa2c9f87ec52d7ddb2c.jpg
