Nice Dayton box CB. Funny I went there the past couple weeks but skipped today. Went out Sunday to meet a guy from there who held a tool for me, almost wish I hadn’t as I picked up even more stuff.

Chris nice haul for $30.

Weekend’s flea market finds:

XL 5/8” screwdriver (23-1/4” long). Vendor held it for me after I backtracked to his booth at the other flea but it was packed away. Looks like a Mac but no name visible.

Proto 3/4 breaker bar

Also left with some giant combo and box wrenches.

Plomb 1-1/2 x 1-7/16
Vanadium Tool Co. 1-5/8”
Vanadium Tool Co. 1-1/2”
Mac 1-1/2”
Hinsdale 2” x 1-13/16”

3/8 Proto ratchet for reference.

I bet you did a double take when you saw that the third one was stamped MAC! Those three wrenches HAD to be made at the same place and time. My best is on VTC for Mac. Interesting that it's the same opening size but shorter. Nice find.

Thanks, I absolutely did a double take after looking for the name under the professional spray bomb job. At first, thought they could be Cornwell. I have a few vintage Cornwell extra long wrenches, wish they were here to compare, but no.

I took a couple shots to show the difference between the Mac and VTC. I know the subject of Mac/Cornwell/VTC has been looked at before but I never did any real comparing myself. Age of the wrenches is unknown to me. Both the Mac and VTC have part numbers starting with CL.

The Mac is on top in the photos and has a smaller, slimmer open end, and is different where the beam and box end meet.

Not trying to prove/disprove anything here. Merely for the sake of doing a comparison since you brought it up.

Thanks for the pics. I am not arguing either way, either, but those little distinctions don't bother me. That could be the difference between their approach to heading the shank on a long combo (the Vanadiums) vs a regular combo (the Mac). Finding them together could be coincidence, but I tend to think not. That whole subject (the Ohio makers other than Fairmount and Vlchek) is like a half-charted archeological site. You can see that there are obvious connections - the ubiquitous hex throat, the model numbering conventions, etc, but all the code has not been cracked yet. It might end up being that Vanadium was making tools for all of them (Wright, Mac, and Cornwell) at some point. Regardless, the similarities are enough to know something was going on between them all. Even if it was just under the table design collaboration, and a regional style erupted. So cool.

I've had quite a few good finds this past month, but haven't had much time to post them. Let me get caught up:

Finds for 10/26/2018-10/27/2018

I had been waiting for about a month to go to an auction for a local machine shop that was closing down, primarily to purchase this old Craftsman tool cart and maybe get a bench grinder or two. I was fortunate to grab it for $60, as there was only one person bidding against me. The bottom drawer is a bit dented, but I can straighten it out. Other than that, it's fully functional. I believe the bench grinder is an Atlas, which I won for $40. I still haven't tested it yet.
1.jpg

As luck would have it, the day prior I found this hand tote Craftsman box at an estate sale for $10 or $12 (can't remember). Looks to be from the same era. I'll clean up both boxes and paint them a non-traditional color.
2.jpg

Won this Walker-Turner 1/2 HP bench grinder for $110. I believe it's from the 40s, but still runs buttery smooth and super quiet. I'll clean it up and repaint it, but I didn't see anything that needed attention.
3.jpg

Before driving to the auction, I bought this cabinet at another estate sale $62.50. It was originally listed for $135, but I waited until the last day to get it for half price. I'm not sure if I'll keep it or not. Any one know what brand it might be?
4.jpg

I got all of these hammers for $12.50. The first one is a Plomb. :)
5.jpg

I paid about $40 for most of the Jumbo wrenches. Most of them are Proto or it's older name, Plomb. A couple were SK, one of which (1-7/16 shown below)will help expand my personal set.
6.jpg

7.jpg

I got this Starrett micrometer set for $200. It looks to be complete.

I didn't get much this weekend, but the stuff I did get was good. I purchased this gray and red Craftsman tool box combo off a Facebook group for $140. It was full of stuff, mainly small NOS John Deere parts and a few tools, but mostly junk. It only needs a little cleaning. I've never come across one of the red gray and red boxes before, so I was pretty excited.

1.jpg

2.jpg

I also bought this Royal Crown Cola sign. It's dated 1993, so it's not super old. It'll still make a nice garage piece.

Jumpman,
Love that Craftsman cart- clean it up good and see how it looks. Every time I get one of that era cleaned up with a nice patina, people make offers I can't resist - It's a bit newer than my favorite era but they really have a great look. I think 6 months is the longest that I have owned one!

I would hit it lightly with GoJo original hand cleaner on a rag, and if it was stubborn try GoJo on some 0000 steel wool with just enough pressure to get the dirt off and not damage any paint. That thing will shine!

Bought this older Snap-On Tool box combo from a closing mechanics shop. KRA-61B (top) and KRA-396A (bottom). They are super filthy, but everything works great. The top box is just missing a pull and one of the lid hinges needs to be re-riveted or replaced.
1.jpg

I also bought this Reed vise and pallet jack. I'll clean and repaint the Reed and mount it to my bench one I'm done assembling it.

Saturday was a good day. I went to a couple of estate sales and found tons of tools.

Paid about $57 for everything you see in the photo. The lined up sockets are Craftsman -G- and newer -V-. The other sockets vary, some Blackhawk, some SK, and a few others. Mostly name brand. One of the hammers is a Plomb. Screwdrivers are Craftsman and Proto. Wrenches are Proto, SK, and Craftsman, IIRC.

1.jpg

All of these automotive books were $1-$1.25 apiece.
2.jpg

Negotiated this Wilton 1755 for $150. It still comes with the box, and I can't even tell if it was ever used.
3.jpg

Got these Lincoln jack stands for $20. They look brand new.
4.jpg

Also got a lot of other non GJ-related items from this one (video games, cookware, etc.).

Thanks duddly, I'll take your advice and clean it up first. I already have the steel wool, just need to pick up some GoJo. I was looking to keep it as a roll-around cart in the garage and a place to store my older Craftsman stuff, but if the price is right, I'll bite. Any idea when these are from? I'm thinking 50s, but I could be totally off.

I think late 40s to early 50s but I am not the best at that. The manufacturers name should be embossed behind that craftsman logo on the drawer there. I think that Outlawmws might be more helpful in dating it. I think some similar ones were discussed in this thread https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=151431

adding a couple pics from a 2013 auction (did not see final price) showing it with a top box - I actually like it better as a work cart - and a closeup of the beautiful art deco handle detal

duddly, wow, I'm always amazed how much knowledge some of you guys have. I looked behind the logo on the drawer, it reads "ADVERTISING METAL DISPLAY CO, CHICAGO, USA". The number "56" is also stamped to the left. So, I'm guessing 1956? I'll try to do a little more research. Thanks for the info!

Unused.

Remove the dynamic jaw and check for metal chips in the back of the body of the vise near the cap. The manufacturing process leaves a bunch of chips back there.

3bay, that Klein 66820 ratchet looks identical in shape and finish to 1/2 in SK 42470 that I recently got. I wonder if the share same manufacturer and were branded for different sales channels.

I've got the same Wilton vise. I bought it brand new, paid $180 in about 1988. List price then was $331.

Inside the drawer behind the logo, if stamped with the Mfg as Duddly mentioned, it may have a date as well. Based on catalogs its around 1957.

EDIT - Didn't notice the page had flipped and didn't see the other posts!

Yes sir, these particular Klein were made by SK. Not all Klein were SK and they aren’t anymore.

I do have the 3/8 knurled handle Klein but not here sadly. The raised panel unbranded ratchet made by SK is filling in.

Not sure on the brand of the raised panel. SK did brand raised panel ratchets for Klein, JC Penney, Gambles. SK also made unbranded ratchets for Channelock (knurled iirc), and I have seen unbranded in JC Penney kits.

Man, you really **** for finding that 7 drawer! Any of those rollers are very hard to find and when you do, it is usually the 3 drawer version. Really good price. Just needs to be cleaned and waxed.

Thanks for the tip, dkroth. Unfortunately, I didn't see any shavings. Also, I noticed the paint had been rubbed off the very front of vice cap. This could be from being in the box, as I noticed there were a few paint scuffs on the inside of it. Either way, it's new enough for me!

Jumpman-Z: That was some epic catching up! The carry box is the same era as the roller - mid 50's. Nice matching pair.

Thanks for the confirmation Lugnutz. I couldn't find a stamp on the carry box, but it looked so similar.

Thanks Outlawmws, that's pretty close to the date stamped inside (1956).

Man, you really **** for finding that 7 drawer! Any of those rollers are very hard to find and when you do, it is usually the 3 drawer version. Really good price. Just needs to be cleaned and waxed.

Haha, I was super excited when I saw the auction listing, and even happier to get it for $60. I was expecting that I'd have to pay a lot more.

Not a garage sale, but a "going out of business, get a box and dig" gift. A fellow I know lost his lease and decided to call it a day, giving me first pick at the tools that remained from him and his father. An assortment of older items including a Wen soldering gun, Xacto, Fuller, Dunlap, a lead mallet, a couple of ball pein hammers, a bronze hammer head, small Rigid pipe wrenches, Cresent pliers, a pair of Berg side cutters with replaceable jaws that Google tells me they are for piano wire.
Proto 3/8" speeder, made in England saw, an auger/awl, a few BMW wrenches, a few more Gedore wrenches and a GE branded hex key set. Misc. files, parts, chisels, screwdrivers and a cantelever tool box with a name I don't recognize. Thank you Chuck, I appreciate the opportunity.

That Simonsen Rally Line box is cool, perfect for someone to keep in the trunk of a vintage car with some basic tools for roadside fixes.

I also bought this Royal Crown Cola sign. It's dated 1993, so it's not super old. It'll still make a nice garage piece.

Nice score! That top box is still on my "WANTED" list.

Made in Japan 6” Mitutoyo calipers, Heller made in USA needle file set, two Storch Michigan magnets, unbranded pin vise with USA on pocket clip, magnifying loupe $8 for everything.

The guy’s name is inscribed on the calipers, so I am not super excited about them...

Man, you guys are still doing great!

Between the Holiday, and the (very badly needed) rain, it's almost nothing here, and nothing I'm interested in going to.

But we had the family over for turkey day, and my brother and SIL brought me some camp gear they no longer use, found while doing post-retirement clearing out: the camp gear was bought by my SIL mostly for backpacking but included one Coleman 220 double mantle lantern still in the box, with extra mantles and instructions, and hardly used at all; dated 1973.

The stove is a SEVA123 and I have been watching for one for quite a while! they are usually more than I wanted to pay, and this one still has the original box and instructions!

A Made in West Germany Fuel bottle:

Its near full and there was also a gallon can of Camp fuel with enough to possibly refill the lantern.

Then there was this steel box that had belonged to my SIL's grandfather - Kinda cool, and I'll find a use for it...:

The extent of my Black Friday shopping. 8" C clamp, cats paw nail puller and a Starrett drill point gage. 2 bucks all in.
