I know your man cave isn't able to take in some of these flat files, but i bet one drawer could hold 100 or more ratchets. i had 50 4-6 inch clamps in one drawer and it rolls in and out almost like it's empty on the old rollers.
Yes, I was exaggerating the number of cabinets Roy would need for effect in order to once again praise the voluminosity (yeah, I just made that up) of his ratchet collection. One of those stacks being used to contain 1,000+ examples of any one single type of tool (e.g., ratchets) would make an awesome photograph, with the drawers tiered (each one pulled out a little farther than the one above it) from the top.

I wonder if they will ever be decorative vintage chic collector items like old monkey wrenches?
I can see one right now on a mantle all cleaned up and looking steampunky.

Because it’s pretending to be a wrench board, but really just a bunch of random brands hung on bent nails? Or am I missing a detail?
No, you got it. The strange thing is that the whole assemblage was old! Even the bent nails were rusty! The seller was a liquidator, pulled it out of a house. Someone put that together and hung it up as a display piece at some point many years ago. But the wrenches are completely different brands and types and eras. The only thing it represents as a whole is 'Random Wrenches'. :)

As soon as I left my house this morning (~0635 EST) it started lightly sleeting, with the temp hovering at 33*F. For the first 15 minutes of my drive I was resigned to my Early Bird flea market being sleeted out. As I approached the first major turn I would have to take, it started lessening up. As I got on the final road, it started picking up again. When I pulled in, it really opened up, and the vendors were frantically covering up and the buyers were scattering for their vehicles. I parked and decided to wait it out.

Glad I did!

I was going through a large lot of rusty tools that were in that blue grocery store tray thingie, picking out the good ones, when I noticed that the pile I was making on the side was bigger than the pile left in the tray! So I dumped that stuff out and put my pickin's back in. There're 7 Plomb, 6 Snap-on/Blue-Point, 4 Cornwell and a Williams piece in there. More details on those threads, but the highlights are a 19" long 3/8-drive Plomb extension, Vacuum-Grip pliers with the "Snap-On Newport, PA." stamp, and a home-made midget speeder.

The lineman's canvas tool bucket with interior organizer pockets has the big belt clip (flopped behind it). After the canvas bin yesterday, I couldn't pass it up. They go together nicely. And the price was right.

The military case is a US Army Signal Corps CS-137 Case (for radio crystals) with a 1944 contract number.

That bench vise with the wooden jaw inserts is a Stanley No. 700.

Looks like you did well on the plomb sir ! That monster doe and the extension are not very common. I see that your recent eBay sale has replenished your funds [emoji23]!

My finds from an estate sale.
This one had some really nice hand tools, many brand new, some in boxes.
bbab7d39347df9c2f5a19cf6e559537a.jpg
A Starret iron level in box, HK Porter shears, Diamond needle nose, Proto adjustable, Bell System needle nose and a lump hammer, all brand new.
Williams wrench, early CM pop rivit tool, just has the Pat No. on it.
The bell pliers are Utica, Klein and crescent.

Also picked up a Proto short 3/8” drive torque wrench, don’t look like it has much use.

So a pretty good sale to sneak away from work on.

Haha. I'm an open book I guess! I've sold fourteen (14) things in the last 30 days to the tune of $700, but you MUST be talking about the Craftsman wall cabinet! I hated to let it go, but I am not really a Heritage =V= era guy and it was just sitting there with dollar signs all over it. My 17YO son tried to talk me out of it as he was helping me box it up! HAHA. Buyer was in Del Mar, California. Dude paid $178 for the cabinet and $85 shipping! He is a collector, and honestly, I still think he got a bargain. In the right setting I still think that thing could go for 3 x that!

Small local estate sale this morning. Spent an hour standing in line and cracking jokes with with some really nice people! Couple of Starrett items, Craftsman hand impact tool set, some mini channellocks, old-school hand vise, glass cutting tool, a couple of no-name machinists squares, a hole saw with arbor and a cool old really heavy AAA license plate.

You guys are doing great!

Today was a rain-out, tomorrow doesn't look much better. (one estate sale, and it doesn't look promising) Not sure of the HS Flea will go tomorrow; maybe if the rain takes a break? :dunno:

Hit an Estate sale today, not getting there in the morning, but that is alright. Not much I need anymore, its more for fun.

A red socket box, Proto driver 1/2 to 3/8 adaptor, SK Wayne sockets, an Herbrand socket, MAC bit stubby, Millers Falls feeler gauge and a bit for a KD mini set.

Plomb 1/2 speeder, Proto 1/2 breaker bar, MAC 4oz ball peen, and an electrical component box.

A Snap-on catalog from '82 with price list. Paid $14 for all that.
Also, I have been disposing of my late FIL's guns and had been consigning the last ones, ones that he never seemed to care about. Well, long story short, I did some horse trading and came away with this

An unfired K-38 S&W, new in box, made in 1970.

That is a pretty piece!

Craigslist free
One dent because the wheel setup has crappy balance, and they put cushions over the handles that slip right off -i-f-when it starts to go over.
My hunch was right, fan jammed in dented shroud preventing the motor from starting.
Not that I need a 10" drum sander, but I can probably trade for something.

ATTENTION! IMPORTANT NOTICE!! ALL PLEASE READ!

As the calendar turns the page to December my thoughts as host turn to the end of the year, the end of the thread, and preparations for the 2019 version of the best thread on GJ! There's a lot to do between now and then, to include picking a new host, and, as some of you who have been with us from the very beginning may recall, I promised in post #1 that...

This year…. there would be PRIZES :pimpflash

With all that as prelude… (and feeling like I should be wearing a Loyal Order of Raccoons hat as I type this…)

Here is the schedule of events for December:

Dec 3 - Dec 8: PRIZE WEEK!

I will be handing out prizes for Oldest Find, Rarest Find, Best Deal, and Best Haul!

Like Santa Claus, only skinnier, not always as jolly, and living in New Jersey, I've been keeping tabs of everyone in my Little Green Book all year! (And yes, there really is a little green book. :))

attachment.php

To see the prizes, see Post #2.

Dec 10 - Dec 15: 2018 Garage Sale Thread "Picker of the Year" POLL

This will be a new thread here in the General Discussion section. I will be nominating several worthy candidates based on all kinds of criteria, consistency chiefly among them, but everyone will have the privilege and responsibility for selecting the winner from among those nominees based on votes. This way, I get to have some say who wins, but can avoid ******* off the losers!

:lol_hitti

Dec 17 - Dec 22: 2019 Garage Sale Thread Host POLL

This will be a new thread here in the General Discussion section. As always, nominees will be based on top 10 or so statistical participation in 2018, excluding former hosts. That will give the new host a week to prepare for launching the 2019 thread.

I stopped at two estate sales today, one planned and one TOO. Neither had any tools worth buying. I sat in an early 90's square-eyed 4-door Jaguar Vanden Plas with a $9000 asking price, but said no thanks.

At first I was like wtf, $900 is a pretty decent proce if it runs. Then I saw the extra 0 and I'm like that thing better have under 30k miles and be in showroom condition....

This year has been my best garage sale year ever! Hope I'm in the running.

Just realized, my best yardsale score of the year was it's own thread and not added to this one. Wonder if I should add it.

I've never seen a raised panel Williams like that one. Almost reminds me of Craftsman RP wrenches.

An estate sale ad today promised tons of tools. There were a lot of them but almost all were Harbor Freight or equal. However, in the piles I did find this pair of Snap-On Vacuum Grip HCP-48 hose clamp pliers. They need some derusting, but for 50 cents I figured I couldn't go wrong. :)

You did have a good year, ff. Your hauls from your neighbor's yard sale are in my LGB. But, I must warn you, the rule for no self-suckage in this thread definitely applies to self-suckage for end of year prizes! In fact, it's tripe the demerits!

Just realized, my best yardsale score of the year was it's own thread and not added to this one. Wonder if I should add it.
I will have to consult the plenary panel of judges for a ruling on retroactive reporting....

Well it's been raining since way before O:dark thirty. And off and on most of the day so far. (we are currently in the Eye of the Storm huge blue sky, and angry clouds surrounding us - Not going to last...)

HS Flea: rained out; and all of five CL postings, and only three mentioned "tools"

Two estate sales and one moving sale.

The moving sale had no tools worth looking at, the first Estate mentioned tools but the only ones I saw were the random multi driver and pliers, and the House and Garage had been obliterated and ransacked, (had to move things to get to things...) a real mess, It looked like an army of raccoons, had pulled everything out looking for shiny objects!

The best was the last ES and it was neat as a pin, but not much left ("the tools went early"...) But it made my day!

Moving sale: a Toy gun. (right after I paid the sky opened up! Not a bad thing; we NEED this rain (and the resulting Snow up high).

attachment.php

First Estate sale (the Rats Nest) Slim pickings (and one item is omitted as its going to my victim in the GJSS); SS Robertson drive screws, carving fork with a carving on the stag horn, A Wenger Swiss made knife, and the rack will get cut at the legs and converted to a holder frame so when I cook sausage up camping they can be turned and not just roll effing away... All I need now is some smaller tongs (pickle tongs?) for turning the sausage.

attachment.php

Still the first ES: the section of thick cork mat. (almost 3/16ths thick) Three bucks all at the rats nest sale.
Then the Last ES: Old offset door hinges, and the lab stand (has 1/4" hols laterally in two places) free "its junk""... I'll soak the paint off the old hinges with SG, and wire wheel the rust..

attachment.php

This metal file cabinet with 6 drawers! this one wil go next to my in the house workbench for parts storage... Could not say no for two dollars!

attachment.php

And the pièce de résistance! A teaser: those in the know, know what these go to! :see:

attachment.php

Yep! an aluminum Frame B&D Workmate! Ten Bucks! I did NOT negotiate! :pimpflash

attachment.php

Only THIS one is the first edition with (mostly) all aluminum construction! Very rare and I've been looking for one (or more) of these for a LONG time! With this one, I'm back up to 5 full sized WM's two more aluminum frame but steel base WM's, one All steel but early version with the good Marine ply doubled jaws, and a modern one with the over-sized triple table. (Good for large projects).

It's ALL there, the dogs, (Blue) the feet for both the folding legs and the solid base, even the steel liners in the wood jaws. The jaws have minimal damage! Not perfect, but well taken care of when it's clearly been used a lot!

attachment.php

If I ever get a second one of these, I'll probably sell the all steel frame one. This one got my attention immediately as its LIGHT. Much lighter that the steel versions, so this one will be my primary "go to" unless its a particularly heavy project...

I had two sales picked out for today. One had a LOT of woodworking tools and machinery. What caught my eye was a Delta bandsaw. I couldn't tell the size for sure from the picture, but it looked like it had a good chance of being over 14". There were also a couple dozen bar clamps. No such thing as too many of those! Before I could get out the door, the phone rang and I was off on an emergency service call.
I got to the sale before noon, but the bandsaw and all the clamps were gone. Sale folks didn't know what size the saw was, so it was probably a 14" and I didn't want it anyway. Yeah, that's it. :(

I went to the other, and did fairly well. I went for the handscrews right away because, well, you know. Eight inchers are a very useful size. I then looked at a Waterloo toolbox with tray, no drawers and, overpriced at $37.50 with contents. Contents consisted of an assortment of junky-to-modest tools with a sprinkling of Crafties. One of the sale-guys came over, asked if I needed help. I squawked (gently) about the price. He started in with what a Waterloo box costs new, and I said, yeah, but I don't want it at all. It doesn't have drawers, so no good to me, and there are only a few wrenches in it I want. Well, he said, how about you pull out what you want at a buck apiece? That sounded good and I grabbed the goodies you see here. There were more than I thought and I ended up with 15 ... and when he counted them up, he counted the big ones at one, then started calling one on a handful of little ones... the tab for the 15 came up to $6. And then, at checkout I whined a little about the rusty screws on the handscrews, and they let me have both for $6! Total of $12 for the lot.

Finding the longnose lockers were real Vise-Grip was a pleasant surprise. The Squirrel adjustable is for a friend of mine who is a fan of Rocky & Bullwinkle and honorary member of Tokyo's Flying Squirrel Motorcycle Club. The Carter Carburetor DOE is just because I like the logo. The sizes aren't marked, but it appears to be 10x11mm.
The Crafty set (all -VV-) is missing the 12mm, but I have several. It's also missing the 16 and 18mm, but many sets were sold that way new.

You did have a good year, ff. Your hauls from your neighbor's yard sale are in my LGB. But, I must warn you, the rule for no self-suckage in this thread definitely applies to self-suckage for end of year prizes! In fact, it's tripe the demerits!

I will have to consult the plenary panel of judges for a ruling on retroactive reporting....

I apologize for any comments bordering on self-suckage, I was just hoping that I might've actually been in the running for something.

Big estate sale today. Lots of guns and a workshop crammed with a lot of everything. Slept in but still got there half an hour before the start and I was 73 on the list. Apparently, some people had been camped out since noon yesterday. It became quickly obvious that the workshop would be picked over before I ever got in so I left for the flea market. Picked up a Star leakdown tester, eight SAE S-K Allen sockets that look unused, unused Utica battery pliers, speed level, 3 cabinet locks and a plumb bob.

Also got a set of SSK 4" casters for cheap and two 7 gal. tubs that I like to use when doing brake jobs.

I answered a CL ad on Friday night 15 minutes after it was posted for an 8 drawer Craftsman top chest for $30. Owner said come get it later this morning. He called me right as I was leaving the flea and said he'd gotten a dozen calls and had obviously underpriced it and now wants $50. Sigh... Since I was close by I head over anyway, prepared to voice my displeasure at the price increase. Turns out he was very elderly and lived in a retirement community, so I held my tongue and counter offered for the box and contents. He accepted. After cleaning out the cheaper **** and a lot of hardware, I was left with the following. A complete and practically unused Vermont American drill index, ChannelLock 50, other USA tools. 4ecf458c431c95abc56bb0cf2263b5eb.jpg

Included was this pair of C.T. CO. nippers. The internet says they're from the Crescent Tool company and date from 1927-1930, with a screw driver and nail puller on the handle ends.

Picked up about 10 Proto (Ingersoll era) and Proto Challenger Tool boards. They need a good cleaning because they sat covered in dust and dirt in the back of a barn but I felt I needed to create some anticipation first...

I'm liking the portable tool-box/chests I am seeing.

I still have no toolbox for the wrenches I am accumulating, right now they are just in a cardboard box. HF chest were what I was considering, but I think portable would suit me much better. I would mod it too to be airtight and have a homemade desiccant canister and oil rag inside.

The rectangleular carry boxes will stack well if you placr a 1X something on each end of the top of the one you are staking onto. Obv. place the larger ones lower if they are not the same size. You can easily go 5 or 6 high.

So I mentioned I was going to cut that oddball rack down to be a "sausage guide" to eliminate chasing the darn things around the griddle wile cooking them up camping.

I also discovered "why the odd shape" when I was cleaning it. it straddled one side of our kitchen sink perfectly. SWMBO HATES things that block the sink, so no issues with cutting this one!

Less than five minutes with some Kinepix compound heavy wire cutters, and I had not one, but a second small one from one side for when I'm cooking for one! This way I can be cooking 4 sausage links off to the side while cooking my favorite French Toast!

I'm thinking it should not matter which way is up but with the guides above the griddle it may see less heat warping? :dunno:
