Nice find. I generally don't buy what I don't need, but that DP would have gone home with me regardless. And sub $20 is a definite "You ****."

I was thinking along similar lines yesterday when I saw that DP. I've got two in my shop but would have been all over that Atlas. Nice drill press find!

Lug: I want to congratulate you a bit early on a successful year hosting this thread. I know it isn't over yet, but you've managed to keep picking and maybe even stepped that up a bit, comment on a lot of stuff that you know about and give out fun awards too.

VERY WELL DONE!!

ALL: so do any of you want to comment on my choice to buy a few never hit the road tires that are maybe 10 years old that i'm getting for my old trailer that are 6 lug until I change out the hubs to a 5 lug to match my SUV and get nicer ones? they are also in the $20 to $50 range for each tire/rim combo so not a lot of risk other than maybe a flat so i'm getting a spare too and carrying my big jack in case trailer is loaded.

thoughts on buying used (even if they are new) tires?

I'll just continue to live vicariously through the many posters in this thread, all the while obtaining absolutely nothing for myself. Wasted an hour before work this morning hitting up two estate sales filled to the brim with nothing but trash....

Went to an estate sale this AM, down the Cape, little further than I like to travel, but it ended up being worth it. Super clean little Prentiss vise, Bosch variable heat variable fan heat gun, Craftsman drill index and drills, razor scraper and tapered reamer, shop supplies, a tarp, etc.
The little miter gauge is a Delta, went to a grinder that was there, someone bought the grinder and left the miter behind, so I bought it.
The tools in the last pic are Snap On, other than the Bonney stud remover, the ParX 1/2" ratchet (pretty sure that's the first ParX tool I've ever seen), the 3" extension that's standing up which is a Craftsman, and the buffing compound, also Craftsman.

Congrats to the winners of Lugz coveted awards, and I am happy I was even able to get an honorable mention, lots of really cool stuff.

Drives: Thanks. It was fun. And the best is yet to come!

Cherry ride, though! (I see you expanded your avatar!) :)

Yeah, I actually had that earlier this year. Bought in FL at the mecum auction in January. Sold it in June.

Heading back to the auction next month. Who knows what I might come back with :bounce:

Hit a nearby estate sale on Thu. I picked up a couple of Red Ryder BB guns for our two grandsons. I'm good with what I paid given their condition but I do believe I overpaid a tad versus had I been more patient. I paid $70 for the two of them. As you can see from the pic one still has the original box, paperwork and BBs. The other is a 70th anniversary model with a significantly better finished stock in comparison. I plan to sand and refinish the stock on the boxed BB gun. I also picked up a Stanley low-angle plane which I suspect is a frankenplane but for $10 well worth it. A Good Earth garden tool for the wife and some skid pads.

Last weekend I picked up a set of Sorby registered mortise chisels from the 80's made in Sheffield, Eng. Bought from the original owner. The set is 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1" and 1-1/4". At $10 a chisel I'm extremely happy.

Is that the pre 1898 excelsior body (with the hump towards the back)? With a 1897 patent date on the levercap? Yep. $10 is well worth it.

pfaustus,
I'm no Stanley plane expert. I just recognized a well made Stanley low angle plane for a darn good price. Looking at it closer it clearly has been cleaned up. The hump is definitely towards the back and the lever cap has the 1897 patent date on it.

Looking at Patrick's Blood & Gore website I think this looks like a #15 block plane. You can see from the pics the lever cap adjustment lever had significant pitting from rust that's been cleaned up. The blade is old as seen in the pics. The japanning on the body and the lever cap has no loss. When was this "excelsior" body used by Stanley? Maybe it's been redone. I wonder if everything on here is original. ??? I just don't know. Any ideas on what block plane this is and the age?

Also interesting are the measurements of the body. The Blood & Gore site has these early block planes (#15) at 7" long and 1-3/4" in width. This plane is 1-7/8" wide. Could just be a typo on the website.

It will be a user for me and like we both agree well worth $10. :)

Thanks!
Mike

The only interesting item from the second sale was a Keystone socket set box that my wife spotted, which is the first Keystone anything I’ve ever seen in person.

I can’t read the fine print on the Keystone label - is that Buffalo NY?
I think that’s what these “Westcott” S-shaped adjustables said.

Bittersweet score yesterday. The company I have worked for is closing and I am the guy that kept the machines running, made tooling and fixtures, and general repair and modification. The building has been sold and an auction is pending. I asked the owner if I could pick out some of the tools I have used over the years and purchase them from the company. He said OK. I packed up several boxes of tools, machine parts, hardware, measuring tools, and stuff a shop accumulates over a long period of time. I went to settle up and he waived me off and made me promise I would continue to use them as I saw fit. I will sir, with heartfelt thanks.

One of the rare times that "You ****!" and "That *****", equally apply.

Good luck, JAB.

I hit three sales today, the first two were bust, and the third was an afterthought. They didn't list tools in the ad at all, just some high-end antiques and Disney junk (apparently not junk as it went quick) but I was in the neighborhood so stopped by. In the detached shop was a very nice Chevy Apache, a Craftsman stack and tons of shop stuff. I have no idea why this wasn't shown online, but I would have gone there first if so.

Plomb ratchets and sockets, a Yankee driver in box with original bits, Plomb LA DBE, Craftsman breaker bar and P&C breaker bar. $10

Echoing Drives sentiments on Lugz Hosting Year! b:bowdown:

Drives: Google "tire Date codes" and I'll bet those should be recycled. I know "back in the day" it was not an issue until weather checking started in. Today, not so much...

We went to two Berkeley estate sales today. After we stood in line for the first one, all of the tools for sale were not to my liking, and I’m not that picky. We ran into GJ member Shiftless at the second sale, along with a better selection of tools. Here are my finds for today. The second picture is Snap-on, the third Proto. The next shot is a couple of Diamond tools followed by pictures of the ratchet and adjustable cleaned up. I found the markings for the Bell System tool bag inside the bag.

If I wasn't so caught up in all these end of season awards I'd be deep diving on that right now on Google Books and Newspapers.com. That box looks very interesting and you know how I like a good mystery. I'd love to know what the pieces looked like. (But what the heck is a company called Keystone doing in Buffalo, NY instead of PA?)

I found the markings for the Bell System tool bag inside the bag.
Running off to check inside that bag I found earlier this year!!

No, esp if they are ST tires. I'd much prefer a half worn tire on a random pickup wheel which are dirt cheap on CL in singles and even pairs.
Even more no because you use a lightweight tow rig.

Sad times, but there are also opportunities.
Interesting dinosaur, the Variac. Do you actually have a use for it??

Lots of uses for those, if you work on older tube gear, or even vintage 70's stereo.

I have several, and I want of set one up for when I'm playing older gear that was designed for 110 or 117 V (the standard today is now above 120V...)

Thanks for the comments guys I appreciate it. I do have a couple of irons in the fire for work, so I am hopeful things will work out. I grabbed the Variac as a "why not" kind of thing. We use them at work to control spot heat on equipment and it is better to have one than not, right? Also not in the pictures were all sorts of hardware, fittings, roll pins, electrical terminals etc.

Its mostly been fairly slim pickings here too, mostly due to weather and holidays... I did do pretty good last W/E, despite that (Including an also-ran for rarest!)

I don't do a lot of things on Eprey these days but once on a while my searches come up with something nice...

Its a hunting knife, but WHAT a hunting kmife!

attachment.php

Damascus steel is what caught my eye but the haft is also very decorative and nice!

You really don't get a sense for the size of this thing until you get something to put it into perspective; this one had been my "everyday knife while hunting (and for a few years on my belt) for decades.

The Damascus BLADE is over an inch longer than the whole knife!

PRIZE #4: BEST HAUL!

This is the one category where my own personal aesthetic probably influenced my choice for the winner the most. Not even going to try to whitewash it.

I’ll also say right up front that this was the toughest category to judge. I almost punted. Actually, I sort of did punt. To say there were a lot of good hauls this year would be a gross understatement. We never had a lull! Week after week, and often back to back days, someone was reporting a haul that was massive in quantity or quality and quite often both. 402 pages and a haul on every other page. Seriously. Just way too many for me to cite and give the credit they ALL deserve! And ALL of them deserve HONORABLE MENTION! I hope everyone understands and nobody feels slighted.

Plus, I am running out of steam on this.

Also, way too many photos in each of these hauls, so just follow the links.

So, what I tried to do here was pick a few memorable...

Representative hauls, representing everyone else that had a similar haul by type of stuff found, and also by SOURCE (i.e., swap meet, yard sale, etc)

Smokeshow‘s Albany, Oregon SWAP MEET haul, posts #7633, 7634, and 7635, linked here, here, and here. A Craftsman vise, a mess of wrenches, a Plomb toolbox, and a rather Unicorny P&C 4-way Lug Wrench is a good day in anyone’s book!

MercLSU’s Huge Variety ESTATE SALE Haul, post #5217, linked here. The Anchors Stores in this Mall of Goodness were a Delta Milwaukee 40-440 scroll saw and a Wilton bullet vise, but check out all the stuff in between – including a Coleman GI stove, SK roto ratchet, a complete adjustable reamer set, a DP vise, and a complete B&S V Block set, plus a mess of tools.

Rmalkow2’s Extended Cross-Country Road Trip (ANTIQUE STORES and PUBLIC AUCTION) hauls, Posts #6252 and 6253, linked here and (I said it was extended!) here. A Roadside America menagerie of treasures!

bmwrd0’s CRAIGS LIST haul on September 8, Post #6230, linked here was sneaky. He casually reported a 1920’s Bonney leatherette wrench roll-up, moved on to a TAC crowfoot kit (failing to mention that TAC is a Plomb Empire company!), and finally, he revealed a complete 1920’s Snap-on 5/8-inch drive set - with an intact metal logo badge! Bonney, Plomb, and Snap-on. One trip. ‘Nuff said!

Bagged89S10’s 12x36 Craftsman Atlas 101.27440 metal lathe with cast iron legs haul, by AD (not sure if it was CL or what..), post #2055, linked here. There are stripped lathes, there are basic lathes, and then there are lathes with milling attachments, jaw chucks, taper attachments, second motors, tailstock turrets, lathe dogs, tool holders, tooling and centers, and a working light. On cast iron legs that might be worth 3 x times as much as the lathe with a slab of QSWO on top. THAT was this haul!

Freudianfloyd’s Neighborhood YARD SALE Haul, including Mayhew punches, Blue-Point brake caliper press, grille utensils, and a Ruger single 10 revolver and a Mossberg 500 20-gauge shotgun, Post #5888, linked here. Not bad at all for a Yard Sale you could walk your dog to!

Yes, it’s the same manufacturer. Alloy Artifacts has little about it. There is a Fordson adjustable (actually EIGHT of them) on eBay made by Keystone Mfg Co with the same pattern as the Westcott.
Furthermore, Lugz, there is a sample of the sockets from a small car kit on AA. I think they look similar to the Bethlehem Spark Plug Co sockets. Maybe just the same era?

Duddly!

For his CL haul of antique machinists' tools advertising signs, posted in July, Post #4722, linked here

attachment.php

There were hauls that weighed 100 x more and needed a trailer to transport. There were hauls with literally hundreds of tools. But if the 2018 Garage Sale Thread was a season of American Pickers, this episode would be my favorite. This is the haul that knocked me out and touched my soul the most.

If these were vintage beer signs (e.g., SCHLITZ, STEGMAIER, and NATTY BOH) it would still be pretty good, but not quite as amazingly appropriate for GJ. If these were vintage service station signs (e.g., ESSO, PENNZOIL and SCHRADER) it would be great and more appropriate to GJ than beer. The fact that they are not only highly collectible advertising signs (made of 'crysotglas'), but highly collectible advertising signs for vintage toolmakers, and vintage machinists toolmakers to boot, is what makes them so special. We see plenty of tool boards and display cabinets with smaller badges here on GJ, but not whole signs.

And the brands are unbelievable. Starrett, Brown & Sharpe, and Lufkin are legendary. Standard is that obscure one-off that makes you wonder why you don’t know more about them. And American Saw (see the thermometer) is so mysterious it is the subject of active historical research by resident GJ researchers twertsy, woody, and four.cycle. To find just ONE of these signs would’ve been a big score. To find SEVEN of them at one time is my definition of a HEAVEN-SENT HAUL!

All of them would look great in the Lugzsonian – and there’s no doubt that my good-natured envy influenced my choice here. As did the original location of the family tool and die business (Kienzle & Hahn) they all came out of back in the 1970's when the CL seller's family shut it down: Newark, New Joisey!

Congrats, Duddly!

Congrats, duddly! Lugz, thanks for hosting and awarding the prizes this year. I totally missed duddly's sign score, and never would have seen it were it not for this prize.

The sales have been good lately.. at least last week. None this week nearby.

Still sorting out all my sockets.. Husky, Thorsen, KOBALT, CraftsMan, Walden, S-O, S-K, Plomb, GM, P&C, Challenger(Proto), Proto, APEX, Dayton, Wright, Chrome Vandium, HERBRAND, Stanley, New Britain, etc..

Question: Is there any FULL list of wrench/socket sizes out there?? I thought this one was thorough, but I notice I have a 13/32 socket and it's not on the list.

Yeah, that list is for the commons sizes; not all by more than a couple. They don't even have all the drive sizes.

Sizes of sockets by drive size can vary by mfg, so what are you asking? Possible socket sizes and wrench sizes of like that list by drive size? Its almost as nebulous as "how high is up?"

Sizes of sockets by drive size can vary by mfg, so what are you asking? Possible socket sizes and wrench sizes of like that list by drive size? Its almost as nebulous as "how high is up?"

I guess I am asking: Where is the list of ALL wrench/socket/drive sizes in numerical order, as well as all fastener-driver types (Slot/Philips/TORX) and their sizes in numerical order.. And should it be a sticky-ed Thread?

Some nice pickups this week, particularly in the ratchet department!

Jab- nice save on the Proto Lite. I hope things turn out good.

Probably spit roasted on a bayonet, over a flaming jerry can of diesel fuel. :wtf:

:spit:

Nice push thru BMW.

Congrats, duddly! Lugz, thanks for hosting awarding the prizes this year. I totally missed duddly's sign score, and never would have seen it were it not for this prize.

I have a 13/32 socket and it's not on the list.
I find I have a 15/32.
Your 13/ and 15/32nds sockets are very likely from the 1920's or early 1930's. I have sockets in those sizes and they are from that time period. In the pressed steel era it was very common for socket sets to include service openings in /32nds. This provided sloppy but ample coverage for multiple fastener system standards (U.S.S., S.A.E., American, and Hex Cap) as well as 1/32nd overage due to imperfections in the manufacturing processes for both the fasteners and the sockets. This practice lasted into the early parts of the succeeding era, when sockets were either machined (not forged) or forged but cold-broached. Some /32nds sizes (namely, 19/, 21/, and 29/) lasted well into the 1940's, to accommodate U.S.S. fasteners (which had heads fully 1/32nd bigger than S.A.E. fasteners) until fasteners were standardized on S.A.E.

EDIT: Post photos.
