Lugz, I love the table and its story. A vintage 1950 folding table with proven history and it still works as intended for $5. I'll say it, YOU ****!

Love the trophy as well. What a great design for Picket of the Year.

Thanks, Outlaw, BB, rmalkow, and LS!

Do you suppose that is the gravity of massive objects, or the gravity of a perilous situation? Maybe both!
 Good catch! That was an interesting Planckian slip. As I am sure you already realize, I meant Variable Density Goggles! And before anyone thinks I ruined a valuable artifact, they are fairly common and I have a few examples. :)

Scored all this from the Canby Oregon swapmeet from October. Sometimes it takes me a bit to sort stuff but I like to post it as it keeps the thread going and I am sure others like to see what I find as I enjoy others finds ! I picked the snappy vintage creeper for $15 as I will try to use it. I am trying to find functional vintage items all the times and this fit the bill. Also got the proto cotter pin puller and a few misc proto wrenches and some proto crows feet wrenches. Also scored a war time p&c 1/2 hinge handle with the female inset in the back to be able to use it as an extension and some rusty but very solid nails... I will be using them for future work that I want to look old.picked up the home made drawer set for $5 as I figured I could use them on my bench. All pictures where prior to cleanup.

Also you are wondering why would I pay $30 for a craftsman crown top hand carry box ? It is clean but is fairly common.., well, I kept violating one of my main rules of picking- always check closed tool boxes, especially when they are closed. I walked by this thing a few times before I opened the lid. The seller had the lid closed and you can see where he dropped the price [emoji51] I opened the box and saw this
IMG_0736.jpg
IMG_0737.jpg
Full 1/2 drive set =v= craftsman standard sockets with hardly any use and no engraving. Also included a few extensions and the 1/2 Flying V ratchet. Also included a few doe’s and other misc junk I will toss. I tried to hammer the seller on price but he would not go lower so I paid $30. I have not cleaned it at all but this set is probably a 9 out of 10. Rileysan can attest to this! Also included the pictured offset dbe’s [emoji16]

Ha!
A bit pitted. And shouldn’t they have gull wing handles?

This type of Flying V Vlchek plier usually have the checker dot grip pattern associated with Crescent. I have a pair of Flying V in both the typical ‘gull wing’ style with plain handles and a pair like the ones you found with the checker dot handle. I think Vlchek contracted some production out suing the war. Nice find on the pliers.

Thanks guys; I see, and yes, they are the ones with the patterned handles that look just like Crescent.

Lug: nice work on the AWARD for BEST PICKER!! while you are and were a great host for the thread I'm guessing you'll be a great asset to the new host and to this thread in the future like Outlaw, 3bay, Jake, Jeff and others that are still hanging around picking and finding gems that follow them home.

Smoke: you don't have to give excuses why you buy something or not cause it's your hard earned money, but happy you opened the little craftsman toolbox cause i'm a fan of those old Craftsman V wrenches.

I don't ever look at this thread, so thanks for the note you sent, which I am assuming was about the folding table, which is way cool, with or without the MoMA sticker and provenance.

I didn't know you had an affinity for that "retro" thing. I probably have a few items around here you'd love.

Here we are at the Crew Members only After-Reveal party!

Nobody is curious what the pieces are!!??

If you look back to post #3, linked here, you’ll recall that my original plans were to mount a little model Hoover vacuum cleaner on a plinth. I never did find a suitable plinth and that model Hoover vacuum cleaner was just not doing it for me. It sucked – and I don’t mean that in a good way! I needed something bigger and better. So I decided to make a trophy instead out of materials I had found at the flea market.

The base is the yoke from a Herbrand Model No. 863 puller.

attachment.php

The plinth is an Armstrong **-1254 1-inch drive 1-11/16” socket.

attachment.php

The placard was salvaged with tin snips from a rusted out WWII Variable Gravity Density Goggles case…

attachment.php

…and the inscription, which reads, “GARAGE JOURNAL 2018 PICKER OF THE YEAR”, was embossed by hand with a leather mallet and letter and number punches.

attachment.php

The pickerupper or retrieving or holding tool itself is a Mechanical Fingers from Aircraft Specialties Products, Inc. in Lapeer, Michigan.

attachment.php

Who will win the “Golden Picker”? :)

attachment.php

I will be announcing the finalists soon!

Lugz ,the creativity should win you an award!!!Great job this year hosting, moderating, judging and keepin it real!!!

Yes, it was about the folding table! You're the most artsy guy I know on here, and I thought you'd appreciate it! :) Love the grotto lamp, especially the "temple" shade.

Thanks, Andy. Believe it or not, it was not my first approach! I had all kinds of crazy ideas.

One of them was abandoned almost immediately. I stuck a vintage screwdriver, auto wrench, ball pein hammer, and tire gauge in a vintage trigger oiler vessel, with the top/pumper mechanism removed. It looked like an industrial floral arrangement in a vase! That was an instant "NO WAY"!

The pressure was on but I work best under deadline and one day the small parts picker just dawned on me. I did go back and forth for a few days about whether I should leave the pieces in native finish or paint everything the same color, etc, but I am glad I decided on the metallic silver for the base and the gold plated picker. It definitely pops - and the gold-plated SOB who wins it better not hide in a closet somewhere either! :pimpflash :)

I think the picker trophy is great. :bowdown:The only thing I think would be more appropriate would be if the label was made from an under gauge jerry can.:bounce:

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Folding Table Story Post

If you're in a hurry and have no interest in reading a long account of me waxing poetic about this find, skip ahead.

So I am in my Jeep, egg and pork roll sandwich recently devoured, piping hot Styrofoam cup of coffee in hand, literally creeping out of my flea market at 5mph when I spot a folding card table leaning against a telephone pole in one of the house liquidator guys areas.

My interest in it is purely in use.

If you've been following my finds, you know I hardly ever buy anything useful. (Funny, but true.) I am not a utilitarian tools guy, I buy collectibles, and I hardly ever venture far from that outlook. But I have been planning to hold a big yard sale to offload a bunch of my tools for quite some time (probably Spring 2019), and although I plan to borrow folding tables from my neighbors, I could use as many folding tables as I can get.

This one looks a little flimsy and a little old-fashioned, but kind of neat, and I like the color.

So I pull to the side, put it in neutral, crank the emergency brake, leave the car running, the door open, and scurry over to check it out.

I immediately see from the construction and the stylings and the Art Deco bakelite handle that it’s a vintage 50’s folding table. And it’s pretty effing cool. I am laughing to myself, now, thinking, ‘here I am trying to break my usual mode to buy something functional for a change – and it turns out to be vintage!

Here are some pics of it I took when I got home...

Then I see the "Good Design" sticker. It's torn in half, and some schmoe scribbled all over it - ironically trying to strike-out the very thing that gives it its value, but it's still legible.

attachment.php

This is what it says:

The Manufacturer guarantees that this article corresponds in every particular to the one chosen by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, for the Good Design Exhibition at the Merchantile Mart, Chicago. A registered description of this article is available for inspection at the Museum, at the Mart, in the Manufacturer's files.

Now, as I was standing there at the flea market I didn’t know exactly what the sticker meant, or exactly how old it was, but I knew it was something special. Something unusual. I allowed myself a very brief, exhilarating moment, almost an unconscious flash, to reflect on the mix of good instincts, weird *** luck, and total coincidence that often align at the most unanticipated times to grace pickers with these kinds of finds.

I look up. Dependable Don (that really is his business name) is sitting in his car to stay warm.

I make a ‘How much?’ gesture at the table.

He flashes me an open hand. Five bucks.

SOLD!

Very cool find....oh.. wait.. I think I may have one of those! in fact I know I do! It was my grandmothers and she used it my entire life at parties and get-togethers for extra buffet space. I'll have to get it out and take a few pics. I'm pretty sure its a lot like that one. even the same color and maybe the same handle! If memory serves me its got a gold type border on mine on the top.... We ll see next day off!

HAHA! Believe it or not, I thought about it. If I had a later can (not WWII collectible), I might've gotten the torch or some bigger tin snips out! :)

If it has the 'GOOD DESIGN' sticker on it, we are definitely going to have one more thing to laugh about when we're eating those steaks!

Today I went out Christmas shopping. For other people, I swear!! OTHERS, including my Secret Santa victim. I struck out at several places that usually have a good assortment of tools, so then went to a pawn shop that I'd been in only a couple of times because they didnt' have much. That was the case today, only two tool boxes for sale. I opened the top of the better looking one and wasn't impressed. Opening the middle drawer, though immediately revealed two wrenches on my list to complete a gift. At a glance, there was quite a bit of other Crafty stuff, and the $200 price seemed plausible. They wouldn't sell just the two wrenches, but after some haggling they came down to $130. Okay, I thought, it's still probably too much, but it's Christmas!!
When I wrestled the beast home and started going through it I was amazed at the sheer numbers of tools and how few of them were junkers. Well over 90% are Craftsman, and in excellent condition.
Even the junky-looking top contained half a dozen Klein screwdrivers Cman ignition wrenches in SAE and metric, 4 sets of Allen wrenches, a set of Cman 3/8 Allen drivers and an 18" 1/2" drive Crafty breaker bar.
The total of Craftsman tools is 240!
And - you know the two wrenches I'm giving away? There are two more just like them!

The Williams Superjustable was kind of crusty and the jaw didn't move very well, so while sorting through the rest of the goodies I tossed it into the E-Tank. A couple of hours later, it came out looking much nicer and moving well. Rubbing in a little WD-40 should keep it that way.
Here's the rest of the haul - just for laughs I weighed the box: 80 lbs!
There's quite a bit of duplication, sometimes the same, sometimes in 6 and 12 point. And there are two very different styles of ratchets. And of course five of the nearly useless small 8-point sockets.

...and in a related issue, does anyone know how to remove the drawers from this box? It's bent upward across the bottom and I'd like to straighten it out (and clean/lube the drawer slides while I'm at it.)

Pull the drawer out till this tab is in the slot
Push it in slightly with a screwdriver so the drawer slides out

I’m just assuming it’s a friction slide like most small boxes like that

Thanks, Outlaw and Elvis (hey, sounds like a band!)

My slides look a lot like Elvis', but try as I might I can't press in hard enough to make the tab move at all. I even tried slipping a screwdriver in between the slide and drawer to apply some wedge action. no dice. I can see my box is different from Elvis', probably quite a bit newer. In the photos below, the drawer is out as far as it will go, and the tab is clearly visible where it butts up against the triangular stop.

Later... OK got it! looking at my pix big on the screen, it seemed there was room for a small screwdriver ... well, look at the other pix. Takes just a little prying outward and out she comes, without bending anything.

Thanks, Tex
Eeeeeven later - just to make it clear to others wrestling with this box, here's a photo with the drawer released, and the locking tab visible. Very simple design, but not obvious with the drawer closed.

BFBOB,
IIRC, once you get the drawer pulled out all the way to the stop then back it off an inch. With the clip pushed in pull the drawer forward past the stop. Good luck!

Pull the drawer out fully and then holding the slide fully out slide the drawer in about an inch. This leaves the slide fully out but the stops not touching. Now slide something thin and stiff like a piece of hacksaw blade down the centre of the slide to act as a ramp to get the raised stop on the drawer to slide past the stop on the slide. Now repeat on the other side. To reinstall just slide the drawer in and it will go past the stop and be back locked in.

My Snap On box came with 2 slide removers that look just like hacksaw blades without the teeth. They have a slight bend at the last inch or so to help it get past the drawer slide. I can upload a picture if it will help

Now that you say it, I remember hearing about that before. Yes, it would work on my box just fine. Turns out little screwdriver works too. Thanks!

You can imagine my shock when I opened the box and saw the full run of =v= sockets, extensions, dbe’s and doe’s. No engravings, rust and only very light use. I have not even cleaned up the tools or box yet. Looks like someone bought them who was not very handy or maybe it was forgotten about ? I think I may just clean it up and set it on my shelf ? It literally is like a time warp when opening that box since the box and contents have seen such little use.

I salvage the stainless steel stiffeners from windshield wiper blades to use for this sort of thing. Some are wider than others, but all are tempered to spring temper. I keep an assortment and it is surprising how many times I find a use for them. Cheap, too! ;)

Yeah, I'm stealing this. I made a little shim type of tool with a detent out of a picture hanger to hold in the ball bearing when reassembling ratchets. I think one made from a wiper blade insert would work better. A lot of other uses are coming to mind as well.

Thanks Provincial!

Bfbob, all that for $130!?!? Its a great deal. They must have really low balled the seller when they took it into the shop. Nice score!

Yes, mixed feelings. Makes me wonder how bad the situation must have been to pawn that great set of tools in the first place.

...but for those of you keeping score at home, when I removed the drawers, rattling around in the bottom I found 4 more Crafty sockets - all 1/4" drive, two deep metric, two standard inch. That brings the Craftsman total to 244!

- The OD green canvas box marked 'B-8560' under that is a WWII sewing kit hard case. Most of them are the flat, fold-over roll-up type.
- Indestro rocker rat and L-handle.
- The DOE with the funky jaw faces is a French import.
- The heavy mill wrench is a SHAW.
- And the S-wrench is a Williams.

- And the S-wrench is a Williams.

What's that big cabinet? It sure looks cool!

Thanks for asking, Dave! And funny you should call it a cabinet - because when I saw it from afar, that's exactly what I thought it was, too. My heart was racing and my hand was already going into my front cash pocket.

However, I wasn't too disappointed to discover that it was actually an ornate antique trash bin! :)

As I was leaving with it, a lady said, "Oh, you bought that. I really like it, but I wish it wasn't painted." She's got an antiques store, thinks it's fin de siècle and probably came out of a pantry in one of the fancy houses on the main line. When I asked her what she thought was under the paint she said brass, but it seems like galvanized steel to me.

If you recall the workbench in the Lugzsonian, I've got a perfect spot for it! I've never been happy with the blue one that's under there now, which is waaaay too small for the space, and, it's not time period correct! :)

The Blackhawk 4-way is pretty cool. And I am waiting to see my first Herbrand (someone we all know just found one!)

The SK “DEFIANCE OHIO” 9710 model is my runner up, but I love those P&Cs.
I’m in the right part of the country......someday.
