If I find something I think Id like to have and is way overpriced, but I spent two hours digging through that place, I will stick it right back down underneath all the debris and other assorted stuff till the next day. If someone else digs and puts the effort in like me they can buy it at reg price if they choose. I go back the next day on half-price day and if its still there Ill decide then if I really want it.

Gotcha--that's a reasnable response to overpriced Day 1 items that you spent your time digging out. I been to sales where people tried to hide stuff they didn't want to pay full price for down behind water heaters or up in rafters--places only they would know to look. When I spotted that happening, I waited for them to leave and then pulled their items out for everyone to see.

Nah, Id never try to get one over on everyone else like that. Heres what I was dealing with. It was the second week of this sale. There were two more rooms and about as much outside on tables as you see here. Plus a Woodworking room with a wood lathe, an entire covered area behind the shop filled with stuff, and the backyard. You know whats amazing... out of two days of digging through this mess.... I found ONE SINGLE PLOMB wrench.... ONE.

I dont know anything about those old jacks...Yet. but I saw one guy carrying them all out. He was almost running. I asked the guy running the sale how much they went for he said $5 each. Think most said Simplex 5 ton on them.

The socket is an LT28!! It just looked strange to me, I haven't found any Bonney like that before. Ther spoon has almost zero pull (I can't feel anything) on a really strong magnet. I lay the spoon on the bench and put the super strong magnet half an inch above it and nothing. It doesn't stick to it at all. Cleaning it a bit with simple green, I dont know what to make of the greenish corrosion being on it. it was in a box of PVC and other assorted stuff. Here's a few pics of it after some gentle cleaning. I dont know a thing about these just figured it was military when I saw the US. A picker there told me oh yea its old Navy spoon but from WW1. I dont think he knows much about them either. Are there any other markings I should look for on it ?

The spoon is stainless steel. I don't know the vintage.

So pretty good find or common?
If you like it, sure.
I made a decision a while back to not pursue militaria, though I find it quite engaging.
One of my grandfather’s elder brothers served in the Coast Artillery, stationed at one point, I think, in Panama between the world wars. Some of his effects, and more WWI/interwar surplus my grandfather purchased for camping (pup tent, down-filled sleeping bag, mess kit, wool blankets), but also bunk beds, Civil Defense helmet, 48-star flags, etc. lingered in their childhood home (which my grandfather inherited) into my teens, when I used it for camping as well.
My best friend’s father had served in the Army occupation of Japan immediately after the surrender that ended hostilities in the Pacific. He also worked in a department of state government that received surplus military equipment as part of its operational budget. He had wonderous items that we played, camped, and occasionally did chores with as kids. Additionally, a LOT of Vietnam-era equipment was available at flea markets in my teens, and I bought some things then.
My grandmother, and my wife were Girl Scout leaders, and I was a Cub Scout leader. Flatware like yours sometimes surfaces in the kitchens of Scout camps, though the kids are usually unaware of it. I think some of it supplied CCC camps, which were later absorbed by other entities. And I see a piece occasionally at fleas and thrift stores.
I had a great time with that stuff as a kid, and I still get a kick out of seeing what others have, reading what others know. But the depth of knowledge some on this thread display, and what it hints can be known, chastises and staggers me, so generally, I leave it to them.

RT: that multi drawer cabinet in pics 3 & 4 - I would have tried for. it looks like a medical cabinet, and that many shallow drawers? cool!

Also, that looked relatively clean compared to some I've been to!

Once in a while I'll be digging and find a piece that belongs to something else I saw. If I'm not interested I'll move them together. If I find keys, I hand any I'm not (trying) to buy to the operators.

He said “which one?”, and that’s when I realized half the pile was made up of metal cabinets :eyecrazy: I pointed out the one with drawers. He said it’s good and full of product, and I could help myself to whatever. Product? I told him I could use the storage! He was kind enough to open his garage up and grabbed his flashlight, didn’t even need mine.

He also helped me load up the heaviest piece, a 34” International tool chest in need of some TLC.

Parts bins, a little rusty and dirty, and yes full of product.

Pics cont.. Already found a little nook for them, and topped it with a nice butcher block from a yard sale a while back. I knew the block would come in handy.

This chest is extremely heavy. Made in Canada.
It’s 34” wide, super heavy, and like I said, the guy helped me lift it into the car.

Getting it in the garage was another story. I spent some time cleaning it up today outside and then came up with a plan. I slid it into the house on my boogie board so as not to scratch the floor, then leveraged it through the man door and up onto some storage totes and literally slid it across all my hoard to get it where I needed it. My plan worked out great and it’s in place.

One of the hinges is broken and the tracks are broken on the two bottom drawers.

There’s more. I still have to post the few individual hardware bins and the work truck hutch box after I clean them up and make room. Not bad for a curbside find!

Wow, what a mess to dig through! How do they even price things when there is so much stuff?
An auctioneer here has come up with a nice concept for clearing out people’s hordes. He does online “by the room” sales. You have to put down a $100 deposit before you can bid on a lot. Each room is listed with a half dozen photos. You bid on the contents of that room, and if you win, you are obligated to completely clear out that room. Failure to clear the room results in loss of your deposit in addition to the bid, 15% premium, tax, etc. What a great way to get someone to pay you to clean up your junk!

Those are RailRoad jacks. Simplex is one of the primary brands.
At $5ea I’d be running like a thief as well. I paid $100-$150 each for my 15ton jacks.

I have a 10t, a few 15t’s, and a 100lb steel 25t. They can be made with either an aluminum or steel body.
I’ve used them to lift a house to replace sills and to level Camps that have settled into the ground for decades.

Raising up is really easy. Getting them to lower safely can be a nightmare.
It’s really easy to drop in one shot and kill or maim yourself if you’re under the load. Think Wicked Witch of the East under Dorothy’s house.

I’ve been offered big money for mine, I’ll never give them up.
They were originally used to level RR track or lift rolling stock for repairs.
Contractors love them for lifting buildings because the action is all mechanical. No worries about leaking hydraulic seals.

Ragtop: I love those kind of sales! Too bad the folks running it were the type that want you to do the work and they make you pay for it.

That Craftsman radial arm saw is worth a hundred bucks in the recall.

Usually you bring a bag or box and fill it with everything you're interested in and then one of the estate sale guys will go through your bag and give you a price. If the price is too high then you can haggle a bit or take a few things out.

ALL: hope you all had a nice Christmas.

I love these old Medical carts (PILL CARTS) cause they are made out of aluminum and roll with a touch of a finger. some of them have plastic organizers in them and others are just aluminum drawers. I picked up a few out of a building that is going thru renovations and there were a few extra drawers too so maybe I can make some nice wood cabinets to hold these too.

Maybe when I GET ORGANIZED and have some time I might have to paint them Army Green, but for now they should hold a ton of my tools.

hope you all have a great 2019.

Just be sure to give those pill carts a good wipedown with the disinfectant of your choice. Can't hurt to play it safe.

That isn't even a mess, that is sorted Ragz! I love those sales, never know what is going to come out of it. Sometimes is a waste of time, sometimes it is golden. I don't think I would ever hide something and if it sells, then they priced it right for someone. But then again, there isn't much that I need anymore and I don't begrudge you.

Thanks for posting that! I didn't know about the RR connection, I'd always assumed they were house jacks (or any other heavy load you needed to lift...) I have an aluminum body version, I can't recall the tonnage - I think it was 20 or 25? :dunno:

They will take a standard gad in the handle hole as a handle. Which makes sense, as those would be all over a RR site.

Nice catch 3BG.

Awesome salvage, 3Bay! Can’t wait to see the rest.

That is definitely a You **** find 3baygarage!!!

:+1: Great saves!

3bay, that's definitely some suckage!

. +1

You sure can’t find that stuff on the “streets” here in the woods.

Thanks guys. I’ve been working on straightening this tiny garage before I can get the other box in. I moved here almost a year and a half ago and still have not unpacked all the tools. There wasn’t enough storage and now I’m fighting for space on top of it. Of course I continued buying in the meantime. It’s tough figuring out what needs to go and letting it go!

3 Bay, that guy lied to ya, he didn't throw those out.
I stopped by your house to show you all the neat storage boxes and road box, but your girlfriend said you was out walking the dog.
So I went home and thought someone stole them out of my truck, guess they fell out by your house. Man I'm glad you found them:lol_hitti

JK...... You Really ****. Great save, you know they've been scrapped.

Almost time to hit the sack here and tomorrow when I wake up it will be to hit the road to my last Thursday Early Bird flea market of 2018! Friday will very likely be my last flea market of the year. Can't believe it's over. Good luck to everyone else heading into the last weekend of the year!!!

I posted some close-ups of the K-D Lamp Bulb pliers in the K-D thread, here.

The oddball DOE wrench is de-rusting.

As always, there were some terrific LEAVE-BEHINDS this morning, including...

These 1947 "Radiotrician" manuals, which are packed with schematics of every kind of radio imagineable. (Intriguing, but not intriguing enough for the price.) See Pics 1 & 2.

This squat machinists' box. Not yet sure the OEM - could be home-made. (Definitely wanted it bad - but the guy would not come down from $250, which was high for a box I could not identify on the spot.) See Pics 3 & 4.

And finally, this unidentified back pack frame. (From the look of it, especially the straps, the construction, and the markings, it seems like it wants to be WWI, French Army, but their infantry L'Haversac's had an internal wood frame and straps. Speaking of the wood frame, it's awfully thin for a military or any rugged application. Thin even for scouting or light hiking. Could be WWI, French Army, some special use, but I just didn't want to risk his asking price ($85) and he wouldn't take my offer ($40). See Pics 5, 6, & 7.

We're just spectating on your "paltry finds", which were better than ours.

The BlueBomber family is spending some time down on my parents' farm in VA again over the holidays. No expeditions into the ravine behind the barn on this visit. However, I did find this Craftsman camp ax head in my dad's metal scrap pile behind his wood shop. I plan to clean it up and re-handle it. Price: 5 days of light labor around the homestead.93c1e453fe10b45d99f0e650be55f83d.jpg

Nice save, BB! (And thanks for chiming in. With my mind looking forward to NYE and 48 hours of non-stop Twilight Zone episodes, I thought I might have been stuck in an episode where I only imagined I was the host of an active tool collecting thread!)

I wish I could find any type of decent sale around here but there is nothing going on. But I am enjoying everybody's last minute finds.

Taps microphone several times. Blows into it. "Hello! Is this thing still on?!"
Where in Sam Hill is everyone?!
Family events, mostly, Lugz. Not that I have done much. About four hours after my “out with a bang” flea outing last Sunday, a respiratory virus put me DOWN, in bed, right through Christmas. Spent this week eBaying and coughing. I still feel like ****, but managed to hang a CD rack on the wall for Mrs LesserSon today.
