I had a pretty good day. 3 stops, 1st one was a woman and her son who had been stuck with a bunch of machinist tools thru a relative passing. Most of the good stuff was presumably long gone. There were no boxes, just a table covered in tools.

Found some good stuff there anyway.
GTD no. 7 tap wrench, this one is older in good shape
Old Forge die setting prybar
SPI angle gage set (made in USA)
SK no. 700 stainless steel Japan metric taper gage, .1-15mm (I don't think it's the same as US SK).
Pair of shop made small parallels
Starrett no. 196 dial indicator, works perfect

Last but not least these interesting looking Williams no. 22 machinist hold down clamps. With matching toothed washers for adjustability is my guess. And T-studs with heavy nuts and washers. And a spare tooth washer I found in a parts bin.

3rd stop habitat for humanity restore, thumbs down, this location never has tools.

Stop 3, from CL. International Forge Co. USA 3/4 ratchet. Appears to be a clone of a craftsman with a different handle. Nothing online about it (has one of those hard to search names unfortunately) except a couple posts here about International Forge 1/4 drive stuff.

GJ member Shiftless alerted me to an estate sale a few minutes from home but he said he couldn’t make it so we checked it out. The garage had just a few tools but there were some worth grabbing. I thought that the rusty sockets might be BE but they turned out to be Craftsman C series.

Saturdays stops, there were three of them that had anything and three more that nothing to speak of. The first stop I was thinking to leave for last but decided at the last moment to hit it up. Glad I did:

A set of Stanley Forstner bits (3/8 to 1") a bunch of Proto LA punches/chisels that I didn't have, P&C screw outs (very large) Plomb and P&C extensions, Starrett dividers, Klein dikes, a misc. scriber, misc. sockets (Cornwell, SK, Bonney, Snap-on, WF) and a contour gauge. $5. I had picked through the sockets, taking only what I needed, but there was a lot of SK's left.
I then hit a bunch of dead-end stops, but finally found myself at a stop that had a sale, right as they were remodeling the place. But I found the following:

First thing I spotted as I walked in was a cool old handmade wooden toolbox, so I grabed that and started throwing stuff in it. An Eagle oiler, P&C phillips, MAC driver handles, and some dies and a wrench for this:

A Greenfield pipe threader, with 4 sets of dies and the backing plates. All that set me back $15.
But I couldn't stop thinking about the SK sockets I left behind at the first stop, so back I went, picking up the following:

A now almost complete set of SK sockets, misc. Craftsman =V= sockets and universal, and unknown L handle, bulb hanger, Artisan pliers, WF T-handle and flex handle. I also got an interesting book on how to be an actual cowboy from the '50s but forgot to take a picture of it, sadly. All that for another $5. Glad I went back.

Went to a swap meet last weekend with Bmwrd0... scored the following. Mostly plomb , proto and craftsman. They should all clean up well! Highlights include the sk roto head for $20, craftsman heritage machinist chest with wrinkle paint for $8( I talked him down from $10), plomb 3/4 hinge handle, handful of snap on for $10, plomb dual marked pipe wrench . Also traded for this early plomb top chest that is super nice! Logo and paint are nice!

Craftsman heritage machinist chest with wrinkle paint for $8( I talked him down from $10)

$#:+!
Yesterday, I ran into the vendor with the crowntop machinist chest I’d seen a couple months ago at the Steel Stacks flea. Said it’s been in his truck the whole time since. Then he wanted $70. Now $65. Guess I’ve got a long way to go.

Nice score on the benchtop DP, too!

Bmwrd0 was the one who spotted it tucked under a vendors table. I saw the price tag and thought it was a joke... then when talking to him he said he was worried about having to take it home so I offered $8 which he took [emoji38] these usually go for quite a bit more around here, I just got an unusually low priced one. It is the early wrinkle paint finish. It has one little ding in the lid but I will fix that! It didn’t come with keys so now I am wondering if I got a good deal?

Bit of a disaster here. I had bought two locally-themed coffee mugs from a local flea vendor. Really liked the dimensions. But missed a step on my staircase last night, and the subsequent jolt resulted in breaking up the pair. My investigation suggests the handle parted from the shock, the fuselage breaking upon impact with the oak substrate. Mourned the loss by listening to “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men.
Interesting trans-Atlantic connections: as far as I can determine, Tams was an English potter who emigrated to the States, but seems like the US company he started expanded to producing back in England. Anyway, I still have one. Meanwhile, good news: LesserSonsDottir2 texted me that she has arrived safely (and jet-lagged) in London, after a technostrophic layover at Shannon. (Honestly, Verizon’s online international wireless support is ridiculous gibberish.) We will miss her at MrsLesserSon Sr’s lakeside table next Thursday.

If you can gather all the shards and chips, put it back together using gold metal flake glue. Makes the repair very unique and preserves the piece.

Two ratchets. Nothing I would normally share. But the Koken 8 pc. Whitworth socket set in brand new condition for ten bucks made it a fourteen dollar day.

I have a few Ko-Ken Whitworths I have found over the years, nice sockets, but I have never found anything else they make outside of an impact driver.

Had a little fun at 2 sales this weekend. Nice assortment of pin vises, deburring tools, Lufkin dividers and others and happy to find a Craftsman depth mic (made in Japan) and a micro adjust counter sink. Never saw one before. I will need to find out how to mount the extension rods on the mic. 17.00 bucks all in.

Every mug my grandfather owned was held together with amber epoxy. Jack Troy taught me to let broken pots go. He wouldn’t approve the slipcast “china” that I replaced it with, but hey - shoutout to our other fossil fuel friends down in the lone star republic.

I went back for day two. The crowntop was gone, so I guess they go for more around here, too.

I did pick up a few items I’d left behind yesterday, including a BlackHawk ballpein (my second - already have a 32oz; this weighs 26oz), an unmarked hex key, two Craftsman heritage-era brace bits (with caps!), a hat/coat hook, a Bonaliy DOE. Not shown - a Homelite blowmold case for my chainsaw, a JCHiggins baitcast rod (only one guide missing!), and a CVS protective rubber tip for walking cane
Total spent today: $9.50

Found these at a yard sale a couple of months ago. Yeah, I know, I should have posted them then but all I got done was snap some pix before I cleaned and put them all away.

Anyway, I don't know what the seller's motivation was for the price, but all the items in the following pix was an everything-for-one price deal. The price was $5.00. Yep, 5 bux for everything pictured.

b-t-w; the first 3 pix fit together as one pic and the second 3 pix do the same. If I had zoomed out to get everything in everything would have been too small to make out.

In the 4th pic does anyone know what the home made tool between the sink wrench and the "starter" screwdriver is?

Mike How did you find those in Columbia? All I ever see is doilies and old stuffed toys and kids clothes ! :lol_hitti

Had pretty good results this week. Got all this at my first stop.

21 Nov 19-1.jpg

First up was a really nice Crown Logo Craftsman Commercial 1/2hp Block Grinder for $25. Due to the numbers hand-etched on each of the major parts of the shell, I don’t believe that I bought the grinder from the original owner, but the estate I did buy it from had had it for many years. As you can see from the photos, there are hardly any signs of usage or wear on the machine. The bottom plate is stamped Oct 16 1972, so it’s “only” 47 years old. Also indicative of light use is that the 40 grit stone on the grinder has a Crown Logo as do the virtually unused 60 & 100 grit stones and the box of buffing compounds that came with it. All the stones pass the ring test. The grinder runs very smoothly and spins down in 35 seconds.

21 Nov 19-2.jpg21 Nov 19-6.jpg

Second up is a Wilton 645 mechanic’s vise with 5” jaws for $75. Although not a bullet model, it’s my first Wilton and I will be attaching it to my bench in place of the Chinese POS that I’ve had for years. I'll post more pics and info on the vise thread.

21 Nov 19-10.jpg

After we settled the price for the grinder and vise, I found the old Arvin electric space heater. The estate agent seemed a little worried it might start a fire so he was happy to sell it for $2. I don’t know how old it is but since they got away with claiming “100% energy-efficient” I would guess the ‘70s. I plan on using it in my garage to stave off those frigid San Antonio winters.

21 Nov 19-15.jpg21 Nov 19-16.jpg

Paid a buck for the sealed quart of Slick-50 and the can opener was free! The can opener has a patent date of 7.17.1900. I looked it up and the patent was awarded on that date to William G. Browne of Kingston, NY. The schematic shows a wood handle and the fulcrum is shaped differently, so I guess this was a slightly later version.

At the second sale of the weekend I found a large convection toaster oven I’ve been keeping an eye out for to use as a curing oven for painted parts. I got it and a nearly full propane tank for $18

22 Nov 19-9.jpg

The only thing worth my interest at the next stop was a Lufkin 100 foot woven tape in a 6” diameter leather reel. Not exactly pocket size but I like it! $3.

22 Nov 19-7.jpg22 Nov 19-8.jpg

At the final stop I picked up a vintage Craftsman 8-in-1 dog bone wrench. What first appeared to be rust covering one end seemed to flake off exposing unblemished chrome underneath so I paid the $2 asking price thinking I would get a shiny tool without much fuss. The gunk looked like hardened molasses with some sand-like substance mixed in. Turns out it harbored a lot of moisture underneath that ate away at the chrome. Took a few dips in the vinegar and a few licks with the wire brush to get rid of everything that wasn’t metal.

I got one of those recently myself, it was $3 as well. :)

Me Too! Sort of... Picked up two tapes recently, a 100 ft. Casey White and 50 ft Lufkin. Both have metal tapes, the Lufkin is in better shape than the Casey and the Casey looks to be missing the release button on the back, still works though.

Neither tape had an actual price since they were bundled in two different piles of old tools. And neither pile was more than $10 for the lot.

Could you educate me about vintage tapes? Should I be watching for cloth tapes instead of steel? Any way to ID the age of these? (Crackers for scale)

Or a female drive sliding tee (NS-75), which NB also made in that era. The part number on the alemite socket was NS-94.

To change the depth rods in the micrometer you unscrew the upper part of the thimble (the rotating part) from the main part of the thimble. The adjustment nuts are clamped between the two parts of the thimble.

I've been looking for a Stanley #70 router plane for about a year. Picked this up off CL this afternoon. Now to figure out how old it is and get the 2 missing cutters for it. The walnut base was added by the previous owner.

While the gardening season is coming to an end, it still never hurts to pick up a few good tools for when the good weather shows.... yesterday's finds....

Love these yard sprinklers...the watering can is pretty cool. Never seen one like this. I believe it's bronze like the hummingbird one. It will see a restoration this winter. Any suggestions are welcome....

Nice finds gh60! Why restore those sprinkler heads? You'll lose all that great patina! Lot of people would ask how to add that look to their garden sprinklers. ;0)

Thank you sir. That worked and was easy to do. I was expecting a hassle.

Vintage Black & Decker WorkMate, Disston D8 hand saw, Weller 8200N soldering iron and what appears to be a shop made hammer.

Workmate was only $5.00 and the other items another $5.00 for a total of $10.

The D8 was the second one I bought within a week from the same estate sale company but two different estates. A couple bucks each. I must have six or seven D8 saws now. This one has severely worn teeth as well as a cracked handle.

I don't know if it is bad luck to return to a sale, but I went back to try for a tub of drills and mill cutters. It was gone but I picked up a few more things. A knurling tool with nice wheels, a handful of centering ruler heads (no blade) that might be old and newer Starrett, a little metric dial gage and the tool holders fit my lathe and a small Starrett surface gage. Needs a good cleaning but it is so cool. Could not leave it behind.
