Happy 2019, fellow pickers, garage sale scroungers, 2nd hand shop hounds, Craigslist chasers, Ebay hunters, boot sale wanglers and free-cyclers! Welcome to the 8th annual Garage Journal Garage Sale thread. It is here that we share our finds and the stories about the finds with a group of folks who appreciate a bargain, a rarity, a collectible or a good tale about sifting through piles of detris in an "Enter at your own risk" rickety old barn. It doesn't matter how big or how small the find. Whether a one-year-only Plomb lefthanded smoke shifter (in cadmium finish) or a set of Stanley screwdrivers--we want to hear about them all!

This thread accepts a broad array of sources and items for display and discussion. Pretty much the only things that don't resonate are the brand new items you bought at a brick-and-mortar or on-line provider. Even if it's a bargain. We also tend to focus more on garage-y related stuff like tools, but, as last year's thread host put it, anything with "old school usefulness" is appreciated.

Again, we're a pretty open and friendly crowd. One of our biggest accolades to any poster of a particulary good bargain is a hearty "You ****!"--read it with a hint of enviousness in tone, and you'll get it as a compliment. Which brings up the only cardinal rule of the Garage Sale thread:

"You ****"s can only be earned, never self awarded! You cannot "****" yourself!

Actually there's one other rule: :needpics:

A little history is in order. For those who are curious to review past years, here are the previous threads and their hosts:

2012 - jeffmoss26 - it's garage sale season!!
2013 - maddawg308 - it's 2013 garage sale season!...
2014 - Outlawmws - 2014 Garage sale thread!
2015 - nine4gmc - 2015 Garage SaleThread
2016 - jakemac - 2016 Garage Sale Thread
2017 - 3baygarage - 2017 Garage Sale Thread
2018 - Private Lugnutz - 2018 Garage Sale Thread

Our thread host last year, Private Lugnutz, set a stratospheric bar for hosting and deserves special recognition. Not only did his hosting facilitate the highest post count in Garage Sale thread history (by more than a fourteen hundred posts!), but he added a raft of prizes and recognition that would be a full time job for any other mortal to replicate.

:bowdown::bowdown: Well done, Lugz, well done!

Although I won't be able to match his feat, I do plan to continue at least one of his initiatives--a Picker Of The Year trophy for the individual with 20 or more posts on this thread who has the best overall year of finds. Although I as thread host will nominate the candidates, the winner will be selected by popular vote. I don't have the trophy yet--I plan to assemble it from stuff I've picked throughout the last four years through actual award (which seems appropriate, eh?).

So, without further ado, may the 2019 Garage Sale Thread begin! Good luck everyone!

Don't know that I will hit 20 posts in this thread, but I hope to uncover some gems.

Edit: and Happy 2019 to all!

This thread looks interesting.

So do we post pics of garage sale finds?

Do pawn shop finds count?

How does this work?

Well, that was quick! Glad you can make it BB.

Yeah, I turned driver duties over to my daughter so I could type up my opening as we drove and have it ready to launch when we got home. She did great--a 21-yr old driver (who normally drives a '65 Malibu-sized car) wheeling a full size pick up truck up the Jersey Turnpike and thru NYC. At night. In the pouring rain. She's awesome!

This thread looks interesting.

You betcha--pawn shop sales can be some great finds! Any second hand source qualifies. And yes, pls post pictures of your finds and a list of what they are. Manufacturer and model number help us differentiate between humdrum or holey-moley. And we always appreciate a good shaggy dog story about a purchase, especially if it adds color or context to the buy. In fact, I personally have learned a lot about bargain hunting techniques, sources and what-not-to-dos from sale stories here.

Welcome--we hope to see what you find!

Glad to see this as the top "non-sticky" thread when I got on with my first cup of coffee in the new year. BB, thanks for starting it right!

Welcome 406Rich - We can always use new blood and new ideas around here... But we are simple, decent folk... so try to watch your language and avoid words like "restraint":lol_hitti

Congratulations BlueBomber, and great opening post. Not bad for a “Retired” Picker.

I’ll still be “out of the game” this season, but hope to be able to stick a toe in once or twice. Maybe in the Spring.

While I may be quiet, I still poke my nose in from time to time to drool and do some wistful thinking. So don’t let me down ! :D

Remember - Digging for treasures is all fun and games ...... until the large boulder starts rolling and chases you through the cavern. Then it gets serious ........ Fast. :lol_hitti

Good hunting to all, and may you all have a great New Year.

Happy 2019 all!

I hate to be that guy, but woke up this morning with a clear head (no idea how!) and the dawn peaking through the blinds so I went for a hoon over the Yorkshire moors to "celebrate" the new year!

Came across an antiques fair at York horse racing circuit :bounce:

>Old wooden Handscrew clamp, 6" jaw depth, no markings (£5)
>Jorgensen Handscrew clamp, Made in USA (Ch,IL) (£5)

>A small V-block, no makers mark, but originally very nicely machined (£0.50)
>A small wood saw for detail work, TR&L (£2)
But what I really liked was the dates stamped on them...and the UK Military "Broad arrow" mark on the saw! seems too dainty for military work but maybe RAF aircraft fitter work during the war?? (or just for framing generals portraits!)

Finally on my way out I spotted this.....and I BLAME YOU ALL!!

Oh and the wildlife pictures are for the house....the maniti one will be going above the bath
