Hello again, gang. Anyone remember Ol' Lump? I've been dealing with some personal issues over last couple of years, and suffering from a lack of time. But I plan to play with tools again, and on the Garage Sale pages of this forum.

Picked up this small Craftsman case and it's contents for $9 from a local Facebook auction group.

Lots of 1/4" drive goodies inside!

45997100024_7e3520e76c_c.jpg

There's a Craftsman circle H ratchet, Williams NM-51 Superratchet, a tiny Indestro 17/64" and 5/16" wrench, and a Blue Point S-810 1/4" and 5/16" wrench (1949 date code).

After a bit of cleaning, both ratchets move really well. The Blue Point wrench was only identifiable by the part number on the back. For some reason, the side with the logo has been ground down.

45997100614_1d3f97ecce_c.jpg

For the sockets, there were 7 assorted Craftsman =v= 6 point and also some 8 point, 3 of the older knurled style Craftsman, one -vv- 6mm six point, one MAC 3/8 six point, a Snap-on 3/8" 12 point (1939 date code), a mystery socket that's just marked 7/16 and USA, an SK 11/32 deep socket 6 point, an unmarked 3/8 extension, and a single Snap-on #3 Phillips ACR bit.

Not a bad little lot for $9. :)

Found a nice 1/4 cman ratchet set, a 3/8 power Kraft ratchet, and an interesting socket set. Thought it was a Chinese cheapo set by the name. Then I saw the USA markings. Any idea who made the ratchet? Also is the black cman case earlier or later than the grey cases?
I have a similar American forge ratchet, but without the quick release. It’s one of the smoothest 1/4 inch ratchets I have. Nice find. The case is fairly late. They made a crown top plastic case before that one, so I’d say late 70’s to 80’s.

From the sets I have seen gray it metric and black is standard.

YIR - that little Williams ratchet has a great look! Yet another thing to watch for... :)

This weekend ... Grabbed a Wright Field Plomb WF-22 3/8 sliding T handle. My first WF tool. not my wheelhouse, but for $1 I had to.

Also a 683 Williams "light service wrench" the williams logo is not readable but other than that it is in pretty good shape.

And.. I finished converting my recent find of the Regma drafting table into a homework desk for my 11 year old grandson. He had a good time helping. We went to an estate sale and grabbed a $2.50 desk chair and a $7 desk lamp to finish the look. You can also see a couple more Duddly display cabinets full of old tools in the background.

Edited to add a picture of the counterweight - currently split in two along a seam. The concrete was poured into each half and shows no signs of slipping out. At some point, when there is no snow on the ground, I will take them outside and see what can be done. The used a very fine, hard concrete, which has resisted simple attacks up to this point.

also in the background - bottom right.. I removed the 94 poound concrete counter weight from the drafting table - my eventual plan is to take the concrete out of the metal shells and replace the counterweight for appearance. With the cut down table the weight is not needed and it was actually pretty scary if I left it on.

Hello again, gang. Anyone remember Ol' Lump?
Of course we do! Good to see you again. Looking forward to seeing you post, especially the 'world's longest fleamarket roadtrip' or whatever that Midwest thing is called! :)

Duds: Came out really nice. It is inspiring me to want to finish restoring an old Keuffel & Esser drafting table I have from my father.

I was snowed out today.

Well it might not have been a snow day here but the winds were nuts! Only managed one car boot sale before getting hit in the face by an umbrella on the loose and calling it quits.

Mixed bag...
>Couple of KING **** Whitworth spanners
>Draper 3/8" ratchet... Never seen a nut, but cheap manufacture.
>masking tape and some 24" cable ties
>Moore&Wright, Sheffield, machinist clamp... Turns out its been double threaded and basically scrap [emoji30]
>Brown&Sharpe Mfg, Providence, USA machinist clamp. [emoji106]
>Rwanda Coffee sack... Just liked the logo and for £0.50..why not.
>"The Cruel Sea"... Brilliant movie and always wanted to read the book
> Mystery double sided adjustable... With only a few markings on the base.. Anyone seen one before??

Out of curiosity, is there a reason that you want to replace the concrete? Or am I just missing something?

In any case, it is a very nice desk, and I too have a barristers bookcase with tools in it, old test equipment.

I finally got on the board for 2019. Just a small purchase but maybe it’ll get the ball rolling. Picked up a Kennedy tool box, a 1/4” action breaker, a 1/2” 10mm Proto socket and a few ignition wrenches for 5 bucks.

Nope, but it's cool. How does it adjust? Does it spin in and out like an old screw jack?
Oh oh... And here I was expecting you to have one!! Even Google is struggling, with only a few random stock photo hits and an ebay add, but none with any information.

I've cleaned it up on the wire wheel and after knocking off a burr on the jaw lips they close beautifully square.

Basically it's three parts:
>Cast top jaw with a keyed thread
>Cast bottom jaw with...
>.. Threaded tube handle swaged onto the bottom jaw.

Twist the handle to wind the top jaw up or down. The keyed thread stops the top jaw from spinning.

It is rather heavy..... [emoji15] View attachment 851395DSC_1122.jpgDSC_1123.jpgDSC_1125.jpgDSC_1124.jpgDSC_1126.jpg

In any case, it is a very nice desk, and I too have a barristers bookcase with tools in it, old test equipment.

The counterweight, filled with concrete weighs 94 pounds. When you release the brake to allow the top to move, it should be nearly balanced. Now that I have cut the desk down it is way too much weight and drops unexpectedly. Since my grandson is only 11, I was concerned it he tried to adjust it that he would get hurt. I removed the whole counterweight and it works nicely. But I really want the look of the egg shaped counterweight, so my goal is to remove the concrete and re-install it just for appearance.

The original top was around 5 ft by 4 ft. I think I ended up at around 28" wide by 30" depth. It is just going to be used for homework, crafts, etc.

Ever since Lugz showed us the mancave, I have been meaning to start a 'show us your collections' thread, but life is so hectic that my stuff is never in any shape to photograph. But I need to do that soon. I would love to see your setup!

Got a smokin deal on a two person ladder stand and a 3 1/5 ton floor jack. Sorry no pics of the jack and it's too cold to go out and get one right now. I may as well add that the price for both was absolutely free. 98dc37c220387d20a8b6eb3b91db7a82.jpg

Random question, but this seems like a good place to find some people knowledgeable on the subject. With all the sockets I find and am seeing posted by others, it seems like the vast majority are 12 point. Hell, it even seems like I'm finding more 8 point than 6 point. Why are 12 point sockets more prevalent than 6 point with older tool sets?

Lump! Glad to see you are getting back into action!

Duddly, Love the little draftng table!

As for me, I took Friday off and went on a winter camping trip with a Coleman group. I did manage to buy a couple of things - A cabin "Hotplate" stove and a sad little JC Higgins lantern.

I also built another franken lantern from a Fount for a 1977 275 lantern that I put on my Xmas wish list, a pile of 1940's 242 lantern parts bought from a Coleman forum member, a nos 200 globe, and an aluminum Eprey railroad reflector that I spent about 3 hours getting the reflective tape off (using boiling water to enable slow peeling - nothing else would touch the stuff!)

The stove fired right up after replacing the cap gasket and a very little fussing. The Higgins has a stuck check valve so will take some effort..

The stove - three burners, One big burner that I believe the raised divots will center a Coleman folding oven, and two smaller suitable for a griddle.

attachment.php

Some how I missed getting a pic of the Higgins!

But here is the Franken lantern complete; I need to sort out a retainer for the reflector extension, but the thing works perfectly to keep the mantle from binding you when sitting at the table:

attachment.php

And a better action shot without flash - No glare from the mantle!

It's just easier to key then onto a hex fastener; but for 12 pt fasteners it's your only option. Same reason most sockets for square nuts/bolts are 8 pt not 4.

duddly,

commercial fishing net floats are made of plastic and the same shape as your drafting counterweight. They weigh next to nothing and have a hole through the center that is used for the top rope of the net.

TEEN: good to see you posting again!! are you a MARINE or maybe you went in a different direction? nice find and keep up the good work. is your 11 year old brother still working in your old shop on your lathe and working with some of your old tools?

LUMP: hope your personal and/or health issues are behind you so you can post more and have more fun.

ALL: here's a picture of my latest Lyon Rotobin that is about 3 foot tall and 3 foot wide that I picked up a couple days ago from a great guy that brought his 10 year old twins to help us unload it in one piece. also he mentioned that the twins were his oldest of 8 (yes that's not a typo) kids and they were perfect gentlemen too.

I'm always looking for free or cheap building materials and this ad popped up for free cement blocks and I couldn't haul them all in one trip in my pretty stout 4x8 trailer so i'll get the rest tomorrow that were delivered to my daughter's home where she and her husband will put them on bare dirt so I can make them some raised bed gardens.

while I was loading up the cement blocks the seller who was cleaning up his lot he just bought from a hoarder he put this roof vent in the scrap pile and he said I could have it. i need a cover over my fireplace that was on my TO DO list this summer and i think I can spiff this up and make it work.

hope you all had a great weekend.

No big finds yet this year. I did pick up this Tru Temp Jumbo Dial clock and some vintage Sears screws for $2.25 at an estate sale Thursday.

One of the tools I picked up on Friday was this rusty and worn Barcalo auto wrench. I gave it the evaporust treatment and a little restoration and it’s now ready to add to the Barcalo shrine.

One of the treasures I found on 1/5 was this Holo Krome #22 hex key set. It only had three Holo Krome original keys left in it so I separated out all of my HK marked wrenches and completed the set. The company formed in 1929 is still in business, now owned by Fastenal.
