I would like to know how wide a standard 12" Diamalloy adjustable opens. Anyone that has one care to measure?

Dave, here is one that opens 1-3/8" (see Pic 1). Note that it's wartime (no horseshoe logo). Why I mention that is because I have observed slight differences (from 1/16" to 3/16", 8" to 12") in jaw capacities between wartime and post-war wrenches.

Hey Stuart I know Ive seen you post some of yours before. I was trying to find out why these special Diamalloy wrenches seem to have different jaws than standard. Attached is a pic of a standard Diamalloy 12" adjustable, you can clearly see the hex vs. square throat.

I wish I knew the answer, I've wondered that myself. You could read through the history information at http://alloy-artifacts.org/diamond-calk-horseshoe.html#history but I don't think it says anything about that particular detail.

Still recovering from it but made the effort to go out today to a antique store where the owners are retiring. Lots of tickets lowered but no tools!
Still came away with:

I guess trying to dive in asking a bunch of things at once seems to be asking too much of the attention span of your average GJ reader lol that's something I've learned.

I'm just curious why this company designed a completely different head shape unlike anything they made previously, labeled it as such, and it only opens 3/16" wider than a standard wrench (thanks Lugz). Maybe it's one of the reasons they're no longer around.

The Diamond made ones, yes. Apparently these come in both special wide opening and special thin wide opening. Maybe others.

Later Diamonds under Cooper were basically just Crescent models that were branded Diamond. Some or all of those said things like "wide opening no hammering no extensions," and had the hex throat again, like Crescents.

This weekend I had 3 hours to run the pawn shop gauntlet. If anyone needs and of this stuff send me a PM and we can work out a trade.

1st Stop: $10. Mac vise grip, Snap On metric deep impact Socket, Blue point metric combination, Craftsman RHFT 3/8 Dr. Ratchet with patent pending marks. Plomb pebble DOE, and a hand full of JC Penny items.

Stop 2 $5. Craftsman Whitworth socket (first for me), 3 Craftsman metric banded sockets, 3/8" =V= universal, and a stubby Chrome X DBE.

Stop 3 $5. 4 SK Knurled Sockets, 30s snap on socket 3/4" X 1/2", and a Craftsman underline no 1 tappet.

Stop 4 was a bust.

Stop 5: $5 3 DBEs 2 bonney and 1 small Craftsman.

Stop 6: $40 7 ratchets including Hinsdale 3/4 drive, Allen RHFT flex, Wright Tootsie 3/8 flex, Pacfic Rich 1/2" Drive, SK Stubby 3/8" drive with the price tag still on it, Craftsman Triwing, and a Bonney parts ratchet.
OTC obstruction DBE and 2 giller stubby DBEs. Proto long flat. SK Knuled sockets, 4 Chrome Alloy Sockets, 2 Plomb sockets, 6 early Craftsman including BE, circle H and U (one is the big deepwell that is 1-1/8" BE), 2 Chrome X Sockets, 1 Craftsman 3/8" X 1/2" Adpater =v=, and my favorite a mystery socket that was caked with dirt and grease. I knew it was something US made and strange so I bought it waiting to clean it up when I got home. The strange part we're the lines that ran down from the drive side to the socket that encompass the socket. After a cleaning it up I found it to be an mTf. My first wild found mTf socket. Lastly a star punch that is an Arrow.

Stop 7: $10. NB ratchet, big proto LA 15/16" 8pt socket, Craftsman v metric DBE, Plomb war finish 1/4" socket, and an Elora socket tool. I think it maybe for head bolts on a VW.

Stop 8: $3. A belzer Whitworth BS DBE

Stop 9: $5 A craftman 1/4" drive case with some =v= series sockets, Plomb 1-1/8" deep LA, Diamond Adjustable, proto hydraulic wrench with original tag, 2 stubby DBEs including Proto and Williams,. Chrome X socket, Craftsman v series deep.

Stop 10: $1 proto screw driver and Sherman Klove stamped DBE

Stop 11: $20 Craftsman Long Handle =V= 1/2 drive, proto soft face hmer with original octagon handle, misc SK Knurled Sockets, Bonney single offset DBE, older chrome molydebum DBE, Blue Point DBE, Craftsman =V= DBE, proto anti slip combination, wright combination wrench, Craftsman vise grip, snap on shallow socket, PowerKraft and crafman underline extensions, and 1/2 a blue point brass drift.

Another Facebook Marketplace radial arm saw for $50, but this one comes with a lead for more....



When I showed up at the address, the guy leads me around back to a shed packed with stuff. His flashlight illuminates the saw and we try it out (it worked). He then directs the light to the other side of the shed to show me the work surface for the saw, and the light shows a cool post vise. When I ask about it, he says it's his son's ex-girlfriend's uncle's cousin's dad's something something equipment from an old metal working business. There's an automatic pipe threader, a second post vise, a Little Giant power hammer, and (in the basement) a "big ol' anvil" and more. The guy says this stuff has been here for years and he's trying to get his son to move it along. However, I can't buy anything else today. But I tell the guy to let me know when the son is ready to sell, and I can be johnny-on-the-spot. He assured me I'll get first dibs. We'll see if anything comes of this....

The guy who sold me the RAS texted me back today asking if I'm still interested in the post vises. I reply with a yes and ask the price. "Negotiatable" is the reply. I drive on over and he tells me he's been moving his nephew's stuff along. He sold the anvil (a Peter Wright) for $600 and a huge power hammer. We go back to the shed to examine the two post vises.

One has a four-inch jaw, missing only a ball on one end of the handle. It has no markings. The other has 6-1/2" jaws and is in pieces, although we come up with everything except the pivot bolt and a locking shim (both easily replaceable). He tells me he "knows" the little one is worth $400 and the big one $600, but he also says he's not looking to get that much. I start at $300 and we shake at $325 for the pair. After I get them home, a little wire brushing on the big vise's bracket reveals it to be an Indian Chief, made by Columbus Forge and Iron Company.

Edit: after closer examination, the little one is also an Indian Chief No 40, with pretty clear markings! Manufacture date appears to be Aug 1903!

Again, looked for an industrian base for a grinder stand. I found three: $325, $400, $400. Wow, out of my league.
So I culled through a heap of tools, spent $3.18, and got these gems: Bonney TuHex 1/2” combo, tiny Vacuum-Grip slipjoints, and a sewingmachine screwdriver that looks just like my Disston electrician screwdrivers.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrenches 3061, 3070,

The Craftsman RHFT patent is for the new style socket RHFT quick release mechanism that came out in the late 1970's. In the 1978 catalog it still has the old part number, 43788, in my Fall 1980 catalog it has the new number like yours, 43781. The main body of the ratchet did not change and a late repair kit fits in the early ones.

Estate sale finds from yesterday. A Bluepoints wrench, only my second Bluepoints ever; S-K, a skew block plane with no markings, P&C, Mayhew, Dasco, Williams, etc. Even two dead reckoning "computers. Just under $30 for all.

Picked up this #5 rawhide hammer from a member here.

No name on it, but it’s hefty.

Hit the local flea this morning. A Proto 3/8” torque wrench dirt cheap, missing one of the pieces inside ratchet, a rebuild kit will make this line new

I believe these wrenches are called ratcheting line wrenches.

Notice the reddish paint? About a month ago I picked up three of these, at a different flea.
Same red paint!

A 3/8” & 1/4” SO rat adapters, 1/4” drive deep sockets , Proto, a Huskey Pro 5/16” rat wrenchvwith a hex x square adapter and mics. CM Pieces.


A CM set of leads for a multi meter, SO file handle, CM cotter pin puller, old US blow guns, a SAE set of CM tappet wrench’s. Makes a third set as I keep forgetting I have them.

Outlaw, no, still missing some. I scoured the boxes they were in, but could not find any others. I thought it was something to find pieces marked the same from two different locations and diffrent sellers. Somebody's tools was split up!

Only a 3/8" Rich Pacific from the triple. The guy at the pawnshop looked it over with a puzzled look on his face.

Don't know exactly without going out to shop, but at least the 1/2", 9/16" and a few others.

Only marking on them is a "S". There very similar to some Williams I found online.

So with the rain and the three day holiday, no yard sales, so I made a CL buy today and this will pair up with a buy I made is past week from a guy on another forum; That is the right stove, and is a made in Sweden SEVA 123; part way through the restore/polishing process.

The other one I bought today with the mating pot is a Model 235 Pak Cook - a clone of the SEVA; made in Taiwan. The SEVA was nearly as messy before I started cleaning and polishing...

it's a early ih tool kit wrench for engines and tractors. It has a upside down "g" so its a g3170. 15-20 years ago ih tool collectors were just collecting the g3170 wrench as a sub group because of like 50 variations of that part number. I been outa ih collecting some time now and don't know if it still has a niche. Most those ih big time collectors have passed. Nice find, i'd like to put it on my wall.

edit, at the end of 2013 there's a posting @ tooltalk about 70 different versions of the g3170.

wow thats awesome thanks for the info I was wondering if it was a G and why it was upside down! I found a couple of other IH wrenches last year and a small oil can that has the IH around the top of the can it was a neat find also! The guy that had this wrench has had it for months, I finally broke down and bought it!

Nice find Outlaw. I have a couple old backpacking stoves like this, a SVEA, Optimus 8R, Coleman Peak1. They are a lot of fun, even if I can't backpack anymore.

Still a shiney small brass manual winding tape measure.

No markings beyond the "18ft" on the rim.
