I picked the right estate sale to go to this morning. Immaculate condition butterfly ratchet tool set in an equally pristine box. No trouble dating this one as it came with the receipt. Sold in November of 1964 for 39.99 (325.14 in todays dollars). I'll scour the catalogs to see what all came in this as I think there may be some add ons in there. No surprise, the only thing missing are the three T handles for the breaker bars. I envision an island somewhere that's loaded down with all the missing T bars. Paid 125, would have gone much higher to bring this home.

Wow. Pristine. That looks very similar in content to my first Craftsman Mechanic's Set (but with earlier style ratchets) and in the same condition as when I bought it in 1974. And with the original receipt, it's a gem.

I don't think the Craftsman breaker bars came with T-bars back then. At least mine didn't. And the collection looks to me like one that Sears would have put together as a mechanic's starter set.

I think you're right about the T bars. Not included with this set. This is as close a match as I can find to the contents of the box in the 64 catalog. I thought it odd to only have 3 deep wells plus a plug socket but that's what's in this catalog set. The pliers are add ons and I'm missing the hack saw. The chisels/punch are in the box, I just forgot to take them out for the pic. I'm thinking this set was purchased on sale.

Went to a Rummage Sale at a local chapel this AM and found 3 clamps.

An older 6" butterfly handled c-clamp, a standard 4" c-clamp (not pictured) and a shop made machinist clamp.

I don't know anything about machinist clamps but after some internet research this one is a bit wonky. Both holes thru the "fixed" jaw are threaded and only one of the "movable" jaw is threaded. I think the screw with the groove is supposed to be held in place by a retaining plate and the hole in the fixed jaw is supposed to be oversized to allow adjustment of the width of the clamp.

Cheers

Jim

Was on a trip with my wife celebrating our 10 year anniversary and she was a champ and sat in the car while I hit a few shops in the town we always come to on the Oregon Coast. Hit up habitat first and got arguably my best score, this nice vintage desk chair for $35! It has light scratches but is in good shape. I will clean it and lubricate the hardware and put it to use! I have wanted one of these for a long time IMG_1165.jpg
IMG_1163.jpg

Also picked up this vintage hard handle flat tip, body dolly , Williams adjustable, proto and p&c amber handles, Kd tools metric impact driver, and small kaystar feeler gauge. Paid about $8 aside from the chair

Cleaned most of the rust off the Little hatchet and small Wiss Snips.

Finally found a small faint "Japan" on the hatchet blade. this will be a goof one for hiking carry for that occasional need to hack at something (just not something very big). Less than a pound total weight. Be a good on for splitting the pelvic bone on deer too.

I also made the leather sliding cover for this small pocket magnifier I got a couple of weeks ago. This will be my new daily carry magnifier after losing my old one (plastic lens well scratched so no big loss - this one is glass), Now that it has been replaced, it will probably pop up... Leather was from a scrap, and I had the aluminum sleeve screw, and it didn't even need to be trimmed!

d42jeep mentioned the sale we were at this morning in San Pablo. He found some neat items to take home and so did I. I grabbed a couple of Marple chisels made in England and a few other odds and ends not worth photographing or even mentioning.

But the notable item I took home was a solid brass bell, 8 inches across weighing in at 8 1/2 pounds. Nice patina and it already has a mounting bracket. $20

The seller had another brass bell for sale but Don and I both decided to pass on it. It was 24” across and the seller said it weighed 275 pounds. I include a pic in case a nearby member decides he wants it. PM for details

Clever move making a cover for that magnifier. That will make it handy enough for every day carry. You and I and a few others around here often need some assistance in reading old half worn out logos on old tools. :)

awesome magnifying glass and diy sleeve, Outlaw. I certainly could use some help reading logos and labels on these old things.

Thanks ! My wife is a long suffering saint who endures the occasional tool shop stop with me. Luckily I have been making lots of furniture pickup runs for her so she felt inclined to stop for me [emoji51]

Yes we moved. Same town just on the other side of the historic district but bigger house! House is 1901 but has a big porch and has craftsman features but has all new systems in the house. I will have you and Rileysan over soon but have to still finish getting settled in. My garage does not resemble a garage or any form of order whatsoever in its current state

Oxwall was a tool importer that branded the imports with their name. the quality can range from horrible to semi decent with most being below average and often found in the bargain bins piled high with mostly **** tools. Once in a while something was better quality if not near Sears below Craftsman level tools.

The tools came from everywhere, and most you see are postwar Japan and Germany, but anywhere was fair game to them - sort of a low level HF of the day.

That set appears to be more on their higher end range.

I hit two estates sales yesterday, both at 1/2 off.

Sargent leather punch, Dunlap driver bit, long C #2P, vintage jobber bits, Millers Falls utility knife, a small chip brush, Williams ratchet, and a Stanley Defiance block plane.
It was kinda weird on the Willams rat. The sales were pretty picked over for tools, but that was just sitting there on the bench, so obvious I almost missed it. Frozen, but working it at stop lights freed it up and a lube job at home made it smooth as silk.
In the background are a Sportsman flashlight (works and had batteries!) and a silver plate creamer. Oh, and the box they are sitting on?

Sliding lid with finger joint corners. Very nice condition. I paid $12 for all that.
I stopped by a pawn shop on the way home, as they sometimes have older guns, and they are one of the few with misc. tools at this point. Found this in the ratchet pile for $5:

I hear you about the new systems Smoke. I spent a frantic month before moving into our place to update the wiring from the original knob and tube. We had no idea how much was still running on it when we bought it, as it had a new panel. But we found a lot of hot K&T in the walls, so there were in-wall splices. Very scary. Fortunately, I am good up to 600volts so rewiring was pretty easy.

One of the adjusting screws is reversed in the machinist clamp.

I know next to nothing about electrical work and know k&t removal can be expensive. Our old house was small and needed an addition to continue to work for us. Luckily this me one, 1450’ came up for sale and has all new systems so we hopped on it. This one also has an unfinished attic as well!

Good evening from Yorkshire!
Been car hunting the last few weekends so not car boots or antiques fairs for me.
Some staggering finds in the meantime by folks on here, Smokes love that swivel chair!

Anyway new car was bought last weekend (Z4 now gone :( ) so I had the opportunity to hit up a flea market.

Picked up a couple of KING **** doe spanners and another small A1 tape measure all for £1.
The "ALDA" tool was another £1 (think this was an old oxy torch tool)
And I could pass on a map of my home county of Cumbria / the Lake District for £3.

Finally a shot of the new motor.... Maybe not as exciting as the Z4, but a bigger boot for finds now :D

I think those are referred to as bone cutting forceps

I’m including a pic of a pair I picked up for $2 at an estate sale earlier this month.
And a recent catalog page of a tool very similiar to yours.

Stopped by a Sunday moving sale, then back to the Estate sale from yesterday.

Seems to be Coleman Fuel WE! Two more sealed full cans of CF, the third with the funky red top has maybe a quart, and a sealed can of Denatured Alcohol. The CF came from a leaky shed, hence the rusty "well used" look...

attachment.php

And a quart can of fuel but only a little in it - the partial can of CF will land here...Pliers are (from the top)
Utica
Cameron
Krauter
Klein
Klein
Klein

Then straight and curved forceps, Vaco and Upson Dual stubbies, Hunter IC insertion tool Channellock spring loaded Heat sink grippers for soldering. Razor blade scraper (blade can be moved "inside" the handle), and some narrow electrical tape.

attachment.php

Last thing from that YS were the New, never used (but I'm guessing 30-40 years old?) Wahl hair trimmers. I know these were the hot setup back that far. they were still in the box! (off picture)

The rest was from half off day at the Estate sale: almost dead center is an old model Xacto knife blade holder with the sliding locking blade guard. JEFF ALERT! Spare tire lock (for my DD rig's spare) a complicated high security 777 lock, a couple of key switches, a better than average security chain, one small Master padlock with keys, the rest have no keys.(unless one from my collection fits..)

attachment.php

A .22 4X scope, a bunch of mostly 30-06 military brass, a box of Hornady .35 lead balls, 7 brass stripper clips, those 3 cases in the center? dates of 19435, 1927, and (Drum roll) 1918! So now over 100 years old! :bounce: those three got cleaned up and put on the little shelf above my laptop table.

I bagged the rest by date: 1940 (Most of them) 1934, 34, 53, 54, some Civilian, and some British .303. A dozen and a half plated .357 Mags, a single .44 Mag, and assorted auto cases, .45, 380, 32, 9mm

attachment.php

And a made in Japan knock off of the good Aluminum nesting cook sets, with some measuring spoons dan an key type can opener that I forgot to put in the pic.

attachment.php

attachment.php

Lastly these Leather Cuff restraints anf belts. :wtf: Missing one wrist restraint. Next post shows them cleaned up with Neatsfoot oil. all the white stuff is coming off pretty easily.

attachment.php

I spend six bucks at the estate sale...
