My luck started changing. I passed a sign for a professional estate sale that I had not seen advertised. I took a chance and checked it out. In the back shed was a tub of wrenches. I saw a lot of Thorsen V combos which had rust. I picked out some other items and negotiated a price of $15.00 for the Workmate and $15.00 for everything else. Outlaw has been liking Workmates, so I thought I would try one out.

I made a stop on the way home to check out a sale that said "tools", but didn't look promising in the ad. I did find a pair of wheel straps for a car trailer for $10.00.

Friday started out disappointing. The early opening sale was a dud, and I had a choice of two sales the next hour. I picked the wrong one, as it was a dud, too. I got to the other sale about 20 minutes after the start time, and noticed a fellow walking out with a flying V Craftsman ratchet, so I knew it had been picked over already. I dug through a pile of junk and came up with the following, shown in Photo 1:

Plomb WF-40 speeder
Plomb WF-8 ratchet (my first 5/32 drive)
Plomb 5668 3/4" hinge handle
New Britian NS-70-US 1/2" T-handle
Cup Brush
Indestro 3209 1/2" short speeder
Blackhawk 49983 short 1/2" extension with revolving grip
Blackhawk 69994 3/4" extension
Long-C Craftsman 1/2" torque wrench
Grease fittings - 137 assorted styles, many I use

Bundle price by seller was $15.00.

You got some good deals at this sale. And I always seem to go to the wrong one first...

Saturday a local church was sponsering a "Flea Market" as a fundraiser. Only the vendor fee was involved in the fund raising, and there were quite a few vendors. I found various useful items there.

Photo 1:
Wiss seamers for sheet metal
Diamond (Horseshoe) short nose pliers
P&C feeler gauges
Bondus Metric Ball-end hex drivers
Bondus Inch standard hex drivers
Thorsen 3/8 speeder
Box of clip nuts
Aluminum Hose Rack
Two Plano plastic storage boxes

Photo 2:
B & D Workmate with the swivel grips, too!
Almost full box of clay targets
New True Temper/Ames ax handle

The Workmate cost $3.00, and all the rest were $1.00 each.

So I found some info on the ratcheting driver!

It is a Wooden Handle Geo. E. Gay Ratcheting Screwdriver with the Reversing Button.

Three Letters on the oval: GAY (not mine; found this on line)

Different design handle, SAME plate and switch!

attachment.php

More (but unverified as yet) info:

This ratchet screwdriver, which Gay called his "double action," was made by Gay under his own name and also under the name of Gay & Parsons. It was made in 6 sizes, ranging from 4" - 12" blade size.

This was not the earliest patent for a ratchet screwdriver (which was 1854), but it certainly was the earliest which was widely sold.

This driver began appearing in tool catalogs in 1880 and Gay was in business until 1920.

Patent info: The patent, # 210942, was granted of Geo. E. Gay of Augusta, ME on Dec. 17, 1878 with one half of the rights assigned to his sometimes partner, John A. Parsons. More patent info .

Typical Markings: (on face plate) "GAY / PAT. DEC. 17, 1878" (or rear, stamped in the wood in oval) "GEO. E. GAY / AUGUSTA / ME.

A more recent patent is here: http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?number=644907&type=UT
Nice find on the Geo. E. Gay ratcheting screwdriver. Too bad it got abused. I picked this one up at an antique store about 2 years ago for $10 or $12. It's about 19 inches long and the ratchet action is surprisingly smooth. 3e42b3ec224dfdb501756565b07d64c0.jpg6bd47ed9e9442d23d91591ae7a1d73a8.jpg6c5fa69f894bbd4e17a1f273bfd0ce27.jpg

Prov, you got an aluminum frame WM for only 3 bucks? You **** BIG TIME!

That one (possiblty he first also as it looks early?) should have the jaw faces doubled? much better that the newer particle board jaws!

And you didn't do shabby at all on the rest of your scores! so More suckage there!

Those compound seamers are NOT cheap! You probably paid for everything you bought right there...

If you setup a few bench tools on mounting plates and glue/screw a cleat on the bottom for the jaws to grip, those Workmates are super handy. I also use one as a loading bench so I don't have to have a dedicated bench for that. LOTS of uses!

Thanks Outlaw! I have been following your Workmate comments over the years and took advantage of these opportunities last weekend.

I did research a little over the weekend, and agree that the second WM is an early one. The most complete history of these things is from the UK and Canada, which may be somewhat different than the USA. It is perhaps the second version, and works at two levels by folding or unfolding the short legs. The original jaws are somewhat abused, but still very usable. I bought it from the original owner, and he couldn't remember exactly when he bought it, but it was the mid-1970's.

The all-steel model seems to be from about 1980. It doesn't seem to have seen much use. It is also a two level design, but I doubt the two will line up in height. It is in better shape, but is missing the cleats. Do you use the cleats much?

One set came on the older WM. So I have that option.

The older WM may be one of the later aluminum versions. The crank handles are identical to the ones on the 1980 model. It also has four adjustable folding feet, instead of just one as on earlier models. The top is made of pressboard. The markings on the bottom of the pressboard are: TYPE-2 and 716-23.

Fortunately, it looks like I will be able to match the two WM's for height by adjusting the feet on the older one.

The Workmate cost $3.00, and all the rest were $1.00 each.

Provincial: I see your Workmate has a lot of shallow saw cuts in the original plywood top of it from careless circular saw users. If you want to keep the original top but fill in the saw cuts (which is exactly what I would do), you can use a good quality wood filler like Elmer's Wood Filler Max and push it into the saw cuts with a putty knife. Overfill the cuts slightly and let the filler dry completely, then come back with a sander and sand down the entire top to remove the excess wood filler and clean everything up. Then a coat or two of boiled linseed on on the top with finish it off. The filled cuts will be slightly darker in color than the rest of the plywood top, but they will be level and very strong. I have found this to be a very easy and cost-effective way to save an original Workmate top.

Pretty successful weekend. Everything was a dollar each except for the powerstrop setup which was $3.

Not sure how old the Apex screw jack is. The big wrench is blue point. Smaller one is snap-on, bent combination is S-K. Craftsman 1/2” Speeder.

I have to stop buying braces but they are so well made and just $1.

Firesticks!

I've picked up some odds and ends since I last posted but nothing to write home about. Luck has changed past couple of days.

IMG_3991.jpg

3/8th Firestone set plus a bonus 1/4" rat was 25 bucks at a yard sale. Craftsman 1/2 hp 1/2" drill and Lufkin 100' steel tape was 20 at another yard sale. Just got back from answering a CL ad for a 30 dollar "hand grinder". Ended up paying 25 for the '74 1/3hp block that's only missing one eye shield. She asked if I was interested in the "old red box with something in it" for another 10. Took a peak, saw the Porto-Power and grabbed it. I've been lusting after some Firestone for a while now. Nice end to a dry streak.

If you have a belt sander with a bag, you can mix the wood dust with wood glue and make your own wood putty pretty easily.

Two different days of finds in this photo...

The flip-top GMTK toolbox came out of an antique shop in Havre de Grace, MD, on Monday, which is just north of Aberdeen Proving Ground, and I haven’t taken it out of my truck yet. I will post a more detailed description and more photos on the 'Toolboxes' thread.

Back home last night and I picked up the wrenches at my regular flea market this morning. They are all very early Williams. I will be posting more photos on the 'Williams' thread after de-rusting.

On travel, killing time in Lakewood, WA. I stopped in at the local Restore and found a cool crowntop Craftsman horizontal band saw that was too big for my checked baggage. I did find another souvenir that'll fit in my carry on:

Snap-on SSD 42 screwdriver

Fifty-five cents, with tax, and at under 7 inches, it'll pass TSA screening.

Laundry room converted into a workspace.
On way home today noticed a sale sign in a yard. Pulled in and seen it was an old barn of some sort. Went and knocked on door and this little old lady answers says her husband was napping and went and got him. Guys name was elmer he was 93 yrs old. Took us back to his barn and said everything was for sale. He decided to retire from tinkering around back in the barn at 90. Used to build flower carts in his younger days. Ended up picking up the tru test box and. 1/4 tru test and 1/4 craftsman ratchet plus 2 par-x wrenches couple proto impacts wilpen wrench Mac speed attachment and everything else in the box. Offered $10 and elmer came back at $5. Told me to come back anytime.20c4d3cbb40fd0a222fd3f6ce4b0a0be.jpge9e300e60cf5709939b30e66dc6a3b70.jpg

Anyone need a drill brace?

f524232a29cca79fc2aa9955d2d7832e.jpg

I was at the HS baseball game, and a guy that owns a local thrift shop showed up and dropped them off at my house with my kids because “I know your dad likes this old junk” (said in an appreciative way).

Now I have to figure out what to do with them. Guess I have a new collection I didn’t know I needed.

Oh, and our boys won the game (first in the playoffs)

The question is fowldarr.... Did you BRACE yourself before telling the other half that you have a new collection started [emoji38]

Stopped at a friends to look at some stuff and help him with his Mustang.

Picked up this Quaker State oil double sided sign for $20.

Then I helped him work on his Mustang for a couple of hours and I figured out some carburetor and timing problems and he was so happy he gave me this Greene and Tweed Defense No 4 hammer.

Made for Hondas and Toyotas of the '70's. No 13mm. Just 10, 12 & 14 were the most common sizes.

Thanks for the info Garth ......yeah, the tools look well made, the 11mm socket has a poorly machined spot at the opening but the others are nicely finished.

I tried to find a date maybe stamped on the box or the label in the top of the case, but all I could find was 263 CODE 82-29-54 if that means anything? but the look is '70ish

Today was a HUGE score. No so much for the tools, but for the boxes.

The tools were a bonus.

There are too many pics to put in one post, so I’ll start with the top box.

I’m mid “organizing” and still finding stuff!

So far there is Craftsman of course, but there is proto, Snap on, Klein, channellocks, husky USA, Nicholson USA files, the list goes on and on... I still haven’t looked through it all! You guys know about as much as I do...

Edit... Just found some SK stuff...

Edit to the edit: R_Olson_06 pointed out the PLVMB screwdriver and I found some Xcelite screwdrivers and nut drivers...

Man, this is awesome!
