Outlaw, Abney level scales are often in degrees and percent (10 feet rise/fall in 100 feet is 10 percent) on opposite sides. Percent is used in construction (roads, etc.) most often, and is very useful for small grades.

Correct, it's the manual way of doing thing but with a digital level I can get the info faster. But sometimes I use the abney level just to use it.

I attached pictures of mine.

Happy 4th of July!

Do not miss the fireworks!!!

Here are some of my new findings from last week

Toolbox - I was just driving down the road and saw laying on the curb next to a trash can in the middle of rush hour traffic. Returned in 10 minutes and it was still there. It looks like the date is 11 83, but not sure - 8 is a little weak...

Addendum - everything in first question is free as well.
Toolbox came with few tools, still need to clean some of them prior to posting

Ragtop, for a second I thought "Dang, I need to look out for those mini DBE sets, those are cool". Then I looked in my box and realized I have a set each of combos, DBEs, and DOEs. They came with the first used Craftsman stack I bought from a guy who worked at Sears in the eighties.

I always felt that if I didn't know what I had, then I had too many tools. Now I feel like I just scored and never left my garage, lol.

Sears threw those in there to increase the tool count in their kits. They will break if used at all seriously.

Guys,

I will be on vacation (of sorts) for 10 days, starting tomorrow, and ending next Friday. Doing a southern college visit swing through UVA, Duke, Wake Forest and Davidson. Anybody got any cool unusual places or things related to antique or vintage tools and such to see on that route? CINCHOUSE planned the trip and she has plenty of things on her list, so I could probably sneak one or two in for myself.

One of my finds from this weekend on Michigan's "garage sale trail" along our east lake shore. Its a Northern tool electric power washer that doesn't have anything wrong with it other than needing cleaned up. I walked past it once and thought I was seeing things on the price. I asked to be sure and he said make an offer. I paid his full asking price of $20! We used it to wash cars this weekend and it was a pleasure compared to the noise of our gas unit.

Picked this up today, it's my first vintage floor jack.

I got it assuming it will need rebuilt. I got it because it's fairly clean and complete, and looks like rebuild parts are readily available for this model. All casters work and it rolls nice.

Hein-Werner WS. 1-1/2 ton. Serial 03770371

At rest, it only pumps on the lower third of the stroke. When you put weight on it, it will pump to a certain point and you can feel there is no pumping left, the handle just moves. It wouldn't lift a wheel on my Accord. I'll have to look into it more later.

It was only $40 off Letgo, so I don't think I did too bad.

Lugz,

I am a UVA guy, met my wife in the dorms, 38th anniversary last week.

If going down 29 from Charlottesville to NC, there is an old country store called the Covesville Store that is an antique store and gets a lot of cool stuff from down in that area. They have a lot of furniture and decorative items, but there will be some tools in there. It is right on 29 so an easy stop.

http://www.covesvillestoreantiques.com/

It is a short distance north of Walton's Mountain, as in the old tv show. A beautiful area.

I hope you have a great trip!

Wife went to Montana to help her brother after his gaull bladder removal. She hit one rummage sale and found this for me😀.

Thanks, Bruce! Just the kind of tip I was hoping for. And, since my wife and I are both Penn State grads, coming up on our 37th anniversary in two weeks, it seems like kismet to follow up on it now!

I'll be down in NoVa myself tomorrow and Friday...meetings in the Building then down to my parents' place in Culpeper County, about 40 min north of Charlottesville. Back in the early 90s, when I was traveling back and forth from home to Va Tech, I'd transit enemy territory regularly.

Good luck picking on your road trip. Estate sales.net is a useful tool on the road, too.

Duke is close enough to the Raleigh flea market at the state fairgrounds if your around Saturday/Sunday. Haven't decided yet on my regular Saturday FM dawn patrol or hitting the estate sale of a Snap On dealer. If you see this dog, I'll be bringing up the rear.

Raleigh flea market at the state fairgrounds if you're around Saturday/Sunday.

Second to Boofer's suggestion...that's the highest probability of a score that I know of in the region. If it looks like you'll get there, let me know and I'll come up to meet you.

Crabman,
Just ate some ribs at The Virginian! Chased down by a South Street Satans Pony! Wow. :)

BB,
I just drove right through that area. We came down from Gettysburg.

Boofer, Steve,
Looks like the order after here is WF, then Davidson, then Duke. So no Raleigh area until mid-weekish. But thanks.

Nice finds Mslund1, I really like those Weiler USA made wire wheels, don't turn me into a porcupine like the Chinese wheels!

I guess these qualify for the thread, even though they aren’t my finds. Flea markets were definitely involved. I recently received care packages from misterbill, gpw-42 and Username. Here are some of the tools in some sort of order.

I took today off from work, and happened across an estate sale. I picked up these 5 chainsaws, 3 Echos, aJonsered, and apparently a desirable Poulan for $12 total. Some run, some need some work. I was only wanting the Jonsered but the guy kept dropping his price on the package.

I also picked up the potato fork / pitch fork for $3 and the bumper jack for $18.

I also picked up this really nice US tap and die set by Craftsman and feeler gauges for $14. Stopped at a second yardsale and picked up the tire gauge for $1.

It's been a long time since I posted anything but I feel I found a pretty good deal today, paid $25.00 for a toolbox with lots of Craftsman BE tools. Also picked up a SVEA camp stove as well. Hope all are well. Pics below:

I guess today is a Craftsman box day
Got the one which is probably a copy of the one from 3 posts before: my neighbor found it in metal recycling pile and brought to me to see if I would consider keeping it instead of letting it being melted.

WOW what a haul today! Usually those all town or all neighborhood garage sales ****, at least around here. This is the little town of Kalama, Washington. Sitting right next the Columbia River about 30 miles north of us.

It's hard to find a good gnome these days. Hadn't noticed till I posted this, all that facial moss made the young lady in the middle look a little creepy. She cleaned up well.:beer:

There were what looked like a couple good estate sales this weekend, and I normally am able to get out on Thursday for a few hours to take a look, but I had some things going on that I wasn't sure of the exact time of, so I was only able to get to one of them, the closer. After getting there, I wasn't too impressed, as while there was some good stuff, I thought that prices where too high. I did manage to pick up the following:

P&C ratchet and wrench, Stanley sweetheart chisel, SK socket I needed and one of those bit drivers with all the bits in the handle.
On Friday, after taking care of a few things, I was able to make it out to the other sale, and I was disappointed. There was some interesting bigger tools, Jet sheet metal brakes and a small Jet metal lathe, I didn't find much to interest me:

MAC and Williams wrench, full boxes of machine screws, Snap-on swivel, Williams bit socket, unused 5/8 tap and a lttle 3/8's to hex socket adaptor.
After that I went back to the sale I was at yesterday, as I was on the way home, and did much better then. They had dropped the prices by 20% wich put much more into play for me.

A neat little Craftsman USA 1/4 set that's both SAE and Metric, an almost complete SK diamond socket set (1-1/8 to 7/16 missing 13/16), Cornwell extension from the '30s and a Stanley 36-24 level. This is pretty cool, as it has bubble glass protectors! Spent just over $30 for all that.

Stopped at two estate sale. First one got me the Dremel tool set, Craftsman plane, the sliver box/tool marked Craftsman (can someone tell me what this is?) And a set of wright hex sockets. A couple of the sockets are messed up at the top so maybe I can find some replacement tips. $15 for all of it.

Then second sale got me a wooden ladder that I plan to turn into a Christmas village stand for my wife's collection. Hope she likes it!

Looks very similar to the set I bought and then sold for $250. It was a complete toolbox with socket set BE. I recall it was a tool kit that was listed in the catalog.
