Ok, have to tell you guys about today’s estate sale.

I was going to go to the flea market. Instead, I drove about 25 miles or so to a countryish estate sale. Kind of far, but a straight shot out there. Got there about an hour and 1/2 after start time. Gps got me to the road. Dead end road. No sale signs anywhere. I was at the very last driveway, had a bunch of do not enter signs. Flashing stop sign in their drive, etc. truly looked like the kinda place you get shot if you enter.

I realized the house sale was the second last driveway. Still no sale signs or sign of life. Two cars waaay in back. Seemed like the sale ad was a hoax or prank or something

I pull up the driveway and see a cute pitbull in the corral, so I just sat in the car and waited. A minute later a couple heads pop out the back door so I hopped out the car. It was a young guy and girl. I asked if it was the sale and they said yes, let us get the dog in first. Great, I’m not getting shot!

The sale looked promising. Small house with patio of stuff and shed out back. I hopped out and immediately starting getting attacked by the skeeters. 9 something in the morning too! Just standing water around from all this recent rain.

Turns out the father died and the daughter, son, and son’s wife (all 20’s -30ish) were selling it all. The father had married a widow who lived there after her husband died. The husband had done something pertaining to horses like making horse shoes or such. There was a bunch of western type decor and some horse related things. I was very surprised to not see much of anything really old. I went there looking for tools, but they too were mix of Sears/Depot type things, and most everything was ruined being outside and wet, rusty, filthy, etc..

I found a bunch of items in the house. Some tools in an old wood box. Some little things like knives. Son had kept the guns and such.

Then hit the patio with the kids. They were super nice, we did a bunch of chatting. I was the only customer which was good for me. Turns out the didn’t really want a lot of people or a yard sale type deal.

There was a big bin of tools and such, loaded with Thousands of ANTS! The fast black ones. And eggs. They were crawling up and down my arms the second I started digging in there. I had like 50 ants on me and was just blowing them away. They were covering the patio too. This is all while being attacked my skeeters at the same time. Never quite had that happen before.

Lots of the items were unused too, but a mess. They wanted me to dump it all out on a blanket but I said screw it and just reached in and went for it. :shocking: pulled out a few things. Some ratchets.

Then they had some cast iron pans sitting there, they gave me for next to nothing. The son had kept the best one, and told me they picked the place over first and very tired of it so decided it was time to open it up to the public.

Off to the shed. They took me back there. It was ROUGH. Like my old garage. The roof was trashed from the hurricane, about half of it left. Everything soaked, filled with water, mosquitos eating me alive. Stuff all over the floor. Old wood crate. Opened the lid, full of encyclopedias. They were like oatmeal, just mush.

What made me feel bad was thinking this was someone’s life in a box. They were telling me all about their dad and the people who had lived there. There were trash bags of equestrian type trophys just wrecked.

I was being real careful but took a bad step and went through the foor. Water all under the wood floor. A whole outer area filled with used parts and scrap. I guess there was a tool box with a snake in it the other day, which they threw to the dog!

Anyway, I looked the place over well, salvaged a things, then we went back inside and found some neat wall items. They wanted me to come back another time too, lol. Told them I think I’m done.

You might like this Outlaw. These were from the shed and around the shed and patio. Most all were $1 or less.

Old wood stove lamp-wrecked. Neat, but I don’t think it’s anything.
Coleman lantern  $1
Large Channellocks, both rough. $1 for both.
Ratchets- two Husky and Jobsmart flex head.
Gearwrench extension
Craftsman bolt outs, great shape for being outside.
Craftsman Reed Prince
Craftsman double axe, handle is breakable by hand!
Irwin new easy outs.
Irwin long drills.
Irwin quick clamps
Solingen Germany Pocket Knife, can’t quite read the name yet.
Cast iron pans- a Lodge, a large cheapo, and a small older one which may be a Lodge as well.

The lamp can be rebuilt if you like that syle. I do, and have a couple, but SWMBO isn't enamored of them, so being stored...

That much rust is always suspect, so give that 220 Lantern a pressure test before trying to fuel and light (Pump some pressure and dunk the tank portion, and look for bubbles...)
What letter model after the 220? and is there a year/month on the bottom? That may be an early one.

Thanks 3bay, but I'm rarely interested in the 2 mantle lanterns. I grew up with them and there is nothing wrong with them, I just like the singles. I have a number of doubles, but those are not my users.

The Fount (tank) could be used with either the 220 or the wide brim 228, The only difference is the brim size.

1953 should be a 220E

Picked up these toolboxes all for $100 last week. Mostly Craftsman, SK, and Kobalt in them but there’s also a MAC Impact socket set, an incomplete Snap On deep well socket set, several different sizes of Channelocks, a MAC pry bar, Knipex Cobra, a Proto 5449 ratchet, and a never opened Evercraft deep well socket set. As for the boxes themselves, the small red one has no name and doesn’t seem very old, and was full of tire repair tools. The small black one has no name but is old and had the evercraft tools and some Mastercraft tools too. The big one appears to be a Craftsman box. IMG_0038.jpg

Evening folks, been AWOL from this thread the last few weeks so thought I'd catch up and post my last Auction buy:

£26 for the four toolboxes in two lots.

The canterlever boxes were full of taps, dies, drills and other machinist items. (mainly Presto, Dormer, Warrior)

The square box contained a full set of cobblers lasts, including a bench socket/mount. Plus a ton of brass fittings... Brass counter sink screw a the size of my thumb!!

Sold off some of the reamers/tool steel to a friend for £15.... So £11 for a load of drills/taps which cleaned up a treat.

I only made it to one sale yesterday. It was an old guy clearing everything out of his garage. I got there pretty early on and found this tub of wrenches. I picked through and found a few wrenches. I was browsing around and they guy running the sale asked me about the stuff I was holding. I asked him how much he was looking for and he asked me where I found them. I pointed over to the bin on the table and he told me to throw them back in the tub and take the entire thing for $10. I happily obliged. I haven't sorted through them all yet, but I'm seeing a lot of MAC, Plomb, and Cornwell.

That Prentiss Wabers Preway stove lives again!

All I had to do was soak the pump leather in Neatsfoot oil (overnight) rinse some fuel through the pump to soak/clean the pip valve (so the tank pressure would not leak back), adjusted the packing nuts on both valves and tightened the orifice at the business end (had odd burning on the first try and it was because it was dripping fuel out the sides of tip...)

Once that was done, She Lives!

This stove is supposed to be 40's/50's, still trying to pin it down... but for a stove 70 or so years old, its roaring!

I also found that cot I got yesterday is from 1915! So more than 100 years old!

A couple weeks worth of gas powered appliance accumulation...1920s(?) Coleman CQ lamp and shade, Optimus 111 Hiker and a 1980 Coleman 502 stove. The light which the old Coleman lamp puts out is impressive; it's a 2 mantle lamp and the generator needs either some TLC or replacement (it surges when lit). Outlaw, I've been using Dub metal polish to work on the nickle finish on the CQ; I might need to try some Mothers, as this stuff has made a huge difference, but it's just not getting the job done. I think the Optimus is unfired, so didn't attempt to light it for the pic. I posted about the 502 last week.

Today was my first day at the local flea in around 6 weeks. Did surprisingly well for vintage sockets and a BluePoint wrench, plus a post-WW2 (pre-zip code, with FSN) compression testing kit. Pics and details to follow tomorrow.

I have it on good authority that SOMEONE is holding out on a couple of jerry can acquisitions :)

3bay and Youinreverse, you both ****...

Nice finds GPW!

I forgot to mention, you can also get some great results on nickle founts with - believe it or not - Oven cleaner (Lye...) and 0000 steel wool (and industrial rubber gloves!) Some incredibly rough nickle founts have been rejuvenated this way! The make 2 different oven cleaner these days and you want the smelly stuff, I got some from the dollar store and gave it a try with decent results.

A rare post from me this year to show my newly acquired (but still loaded in the Suburban) Craftsman DP100 drill press with RARE Atlas table lift. I bought this from a local online seller for $150. As you can see from the ad photo, it was listed for $130. Because of the table lift, I chose not to rely on hope and good luck by trying to be first in line, nor was I going to offer less than asking price. I REALLY wanted this DP!

I mentioned this was a DP100 (table top model) and not a DP150 (floor standing model), even though this one is clearly standing tall on the floor. Before purchasing, I consulted with the GJ DP gurus and all agreed the base was from a model DP100. That, and armed with information on how to identify the post as Craftsman, I was able to determine it was a table top model that had been converted to a floor standing model. I honestly don't care. The table lift is worth more on eBay than I paid for the entire thing!

In case you're wondering, I removed all the handles that you see missing from the DP before laying it down on its side.

Brian

That’s my first ever “you ****”! No name on the spud ratchet. It doesn’t seem very old and looks like it had a sticker on it. It also had a 3/8 male drive on the back but its broken off. To me it looks like the ones sold at tractor supply.

Ok really like the "bob-wire" board.
& enjoyed the story.
Most of us have been mosquito bit & mildew sneezed. Never been through a floor yet.
Can you still read the name on the fence pliers?

Also stopped at the local Sears that is closing. First week of liquidation sales, tools were 10% off and tool storage 25%. Picked up half a dozen of the US made plastic under seat tool boxes for $47. Didn't see anything else worth going back for when the sales get better. Asked about the ratchet rebuild sets and they were already sent to to the other local store that is remaining open.

My €1,50 thrift store find. Baldur bearing splitter/puller.

The new equivalent of that would be $200/175 Eu or more.
Put a thin smear of high-pressure grease on the forcing screw.

The 100 has nothing to do with it being a floor or bench model, the oval Craftsman logo was the 100, the Crown Craftsman logo was the 150.

Nice drill press Brian! I love the look on that particular Craftsman drill press. Was that made by Atlas? I'm not familiar with the Atlas table lift though. Will have to check that out.

Group of 4 grease guns I'm catching up on posting:

Lincoln Model 1169, Series C 1960s production
Caterpillar 8F 9866 modern
Alemite 12" details TBD
Alemite 14" details TBD

The Cat is modern, and full of red grease. The shape of the lever and font of the brand marking on the Lincoln's lever made me optimistic that it would be WW2 era production, but the patents are too new. Patent 2,394,488 was approved in 1946 (application in 1943) and 2,886,215 was approved in May, 1959.

Not sure yet on details of either Alemite grease gun - haven't gotten them cleaned up enough yet to find markings, other than what's on the levers. If either is WW2 era, it (they) will need the hose(s) replaced with pipe fittings. Oddly, one of them has a Lincoln hose and zerk fitting.

Nice drill press Brian! I love the look on that particular Craftsman drill press. Was that made by Atlas? I'm not familiar with the Atlas table lift though. Will have to check that out.

This particular drill press was made by King Seeley, and was introduced in 1947. They are VERY popular amongst Craftsman collectors. Prior to that, Sears contracted with Atlas to make drill presses and the Atlas table lift was originally offered well before the King Seeley models were introduced. The table lifts are quite uncommon, if not rare. The going rate for these on eBay is upwards of $500. I'm very fortunate to have found one!

Blue - Thank you for the correction on the models. I appreciate the insight!

Well, I certainly won't be looking for one on ebay! :) Can you post some pics of just the table lift? Thanks!

Saw an ad on Facebook Marketplace for what seller thought was an antique bookpress (this pic from prior owner).

When talking to seller, asked if previous owner might have been into woodworking, as thought the press had been used by previous owner for applying veneer.

When seller confirmed this, decided that could use it, but also thought that bottom portion was actually the hydraulic bottom portion of an old barber chair.

Decided to buy it, as hoping to make that section into a vise table.

Pics 2-6 are after some cleanup, especially the green porcelain of bottom portion of barber chair.

Will have to see if can get hydraulic portion to work.

There is tag on bottom portion of 11-27, so guessing Nov of 1927 on MFG date but only found WF Co and wondering if that may have been the MFG company who made the barber chair portion.

Saturday morning flea was a wash for me, but my son scored an old tin Budweiser Racing sign. Left there and went to the estate sale of a tool truck dealer. They had three lowboy flatbed trailers covered in mostly new still-wrapped tools, some three deep. Prices seemed to be pretty fair. Left without buying anything since my son had somewhere to be and I didn't feel like standing in the sun all day. I'm still regretting it.

Small consolation at the ReStore later on.

Everything was a buck except the Stevens Walden socket set - $3.

Mostly Walden sockets with a couple Walden Worcesters and three Hallowells.

A varied selection of ignition wrenches. Proto, Armstrong, a Disston file, etc. and a couple of what the internet says are old magneto wrenches.

Nice find on the Walden tools. I’m always looking for the dark finish Walden 1/4” drive tools should you decide to let them go. Particularly the ratchet.

Hi, guys!

Craftman socket set, No 34789, "Made in USA".
Extension is missing. All other parts (3/8 ratchet, 3/8 sockets, 1/4 sockets...), seem to be fairly unused. Ratchet model is VL-44811.
Entire set cost me slightly over 14 dollars (I don't know is this too much for this set). I am not familiar with the "Craftsman" quality. Is it worth keeping? Anyone have a clue, how old is this set?

That's a good socket set, willehaz, for a decent price. I'd keep it either in a vehicle, in the house tool drawer, or in any place where you frequently need to carry tools to your project. I find I'm grabbing a similar clamshell set in the garage for doing small work on the cars. It saves multiple trips to the big tool box.

Like Bluebomber said, good tools to keep in a truck/car or in an area that uses those size of sockets to keep you from running to the big box for tools.

I got something similar in my truck. But I also carry an army ammo can for other tools I might need.

First 3 pics are from a Fri. estate sale, Rotozip with NIP right angle grinding attachment, Makita palm sander, self igniting torch, Stanley bevel square, some chain for trailer safety chains, misc., the red tote and the cool little dolly with the detachable pull strap. $51.

Last 2 pics are from a pretty slow day at the Sun. flea market. Couple 1/2" drill chucks, Craftsman puller setup, neat Dixon jewelers hand vise, 1/2" adj. reamer, vintage blow torch and a few misc. smalls.
