Turns out today was our fall town-wide yard sale day. I cruised the lawn at the school and found the token box of tools at the Heart Association booth. We came up with a $9 price, which I rounded to $10 for a good cause and good karma.

Honk Kong-made "illuminated screwdriver"--looks like a same-store Fathers Day gift that was never used
Nucut round file
Nichols square file
No-name draw scraper--old, still has some original black paint
Craftsman 41473 T10 Torx driver
Craftsman WF flat blade driver
Western Auto HR1305 flat blade driver--has red swiveling "cap" on handle
Brown & Sharpe No 8 metric micrometer
Half of a General-branded depth gauge made in Athol, MA (i.e. Starrett)
NIB Craftsman 940808 "High Energy Spark Plug Gauge with Decimal-Metric marking"
Two "V" era Craftsman 12-pt 1/2"-drive sockets, 9/16" & 11/16"

Good luck to all the rest of you this weekend!

Some odd things showing up. First Cornwell ratchet, first flex 1/4, and first two pullers. Is the adjustable hole saw a gimmick tool?

It’s dark. The stars twinkle above my head as they fade into the slowly lightening firmament. Some vendors are set up, many are still pulling in. Headlights and flashlights, and an occasional glimpse of something vague looming in the inky night. Is it opportunity?
You're a poet,
if you don't know it,
but your feet show it,
'cuz they're Longfellows.

I dont think I have enough wallet for this place...
Ha! I like the barn style doors on the garage.

Macduf: Is that puller on the left Old Forge?

Fun/ny kind of morning at the flea market and a decent haul.

Typical too-smart-for-his-own-good vendor wanted crazy prices for the wartime Snap-on he had but I got the exquisite wartime Bonney 4098 ratchet and "the socket that's on it" (not!) for peanuts.

I bought the Craftsman 10" pipe wrench for my own research thread - even though it has reached a definitive conclusion. I took it apart and the vendor went berserk. "What are you doing?" he said in a thick accent, Morrocan, possibly Turkish. I explained to him that I wouldn't want to buy it unless it had the tensioner inside. When he saw me searching for something on his table to help re-assemble it, he said, "Do you know how long it took me to put that back together? You have to buy it now! Fifteen dollar." It was clearly going to be much less, I had clearly given him an opening with some technical jargon and my disassembly, and now it wasn't just a rusty pipe wrench which he had clearly never taken apart! HAHA. As soon as I said, "No way, that's way too high," and immediately started re-assembling it, he started dickering. We settled on $3. HAHA.

I've already got two or three of the little ignition tools with the spark plug and distributor feeler blades, but this one is marked: Delco.

The old hollow handle bits tool is in great shape. Usually either the threads are bunged up or the bits are missing. It's not marked, but it's either a Fray or a Buell. They pop up here from time to time. Mike/Tex found one last year or earlier this year if I recall.

I will be posting close-ups after cleanup later. I have two games today.

$57 Ah well, a poetic start led down a primrose path to prematurely empty pockets today. I hardly haggled over anything, wound up paying more than I should have. Two books and a few oddities (the crank handle accepts a 3/8” square plug). After Jake’s I headed to a Boyertown parking lot flea, where I encountered the algae-rusted crowntop box and the hasty-sprayed heritage 5176 vise. Then two yard sales (nada) on the way to Quakertown. I picked up two Bonney DOEs and a handful of Bonney sockets there. I had to pass up a semiannual flea in Coopersburg that had somehow fallen off my radar. I spotted it around 11am, by which time the nearby parking was full up. They were running shuttle busses from another lot a couple miles away, but I asked myself if I really wanted to spend half an hour riding a bus for the privilege of spending my last $4. Nah. So home I went.

New here, 1st post, but I have been reading this thread and others for the past few weeks. Very informative and fun. Picked up this box recently. It has some damage, lock is missing, a few extra holes where someone added a lock hasp at one time and a big decal on the back but overall it seems quite serviceable. Havent been able to find much info on it other than it is similar to some SK boxes and may have been made by Waterloo. Any info appreciated. If this post should be in another section, mods please move as you see fit. Thanks. 20190921_131136.jpg

Day started off VERY slow - 5 stops, plus a Realtor organised "neighborhood sale" - only the second had anything at all, until I got to the neighborhood sale which was just outside where I usual limit myself to.

The kick off was the SS rule, socket tray (with remnants of Green Hammer tone - maybe SK? - and a key-chain "multi-wrench" I got that juts to see how well it worked. not bad for low torque and LOT of space... -Once in a while you have to give a "gimmick" tool the test... A dollar all

attachment.php

The rest of the stops were DEAD until SEVERAL into the RE organized sales, where I got the PowrKraft and /Armstrong wrences for two bucks.

Finally someone brought out some tools (literally while I waited) and the old tub had rusty tools from being in the weather and in at least a few cases from having the tub partly filed with water. People! :tard:

Thorsen, at the bottom, Indestro, Baily Pincers, an Armstrong 1/2-3/4 adampter, and a NASA Adjustable. I generally pass on adjustables unless they are unusual, or 4" or have some specific attraction. NASA markings did it in this case.

attachment.php

And two socket Boxes, the smaller 1/4 is Wright, (you can see wher it was on end in standing water) and the upper is 3/6 Thorsen, with a Proto replacement ratchet. One loose MAC and one Craftsman in the mix. as well. Tthe sockets in the plastic holder in the Wright box are Taiwans those will get dumped into the "sell at a yard sale or give away" bag. Ten bucks for both the last two pics.

Another $2 Coleman 275A!

attachment.php

Two bucks to be able to hoist the Jolly Roger!

And $5 for the driving lights (for the Project van)

Welcome WTN, and Nice score on the Williams box!

Looks a LOT like a SO box from the period, and Williams was bought by SO, so... :dunno:

Any markings on the back? Probably lower right (from he back) and likely faint...

Welcome, WTN. This thread is entirely appropriate for any "aftermarket" garage related purchase. You're tool box definitely fits.

Nice haul, Outlaw. You **** for the brown Coleman lantern at two bucks.

Looking better:

This puts a pall on any of the other NASA marked tools that have surfaced...

Turns out if it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't...

thanks BB! much better then the one 4 weeks ago as this one has the globe, and its an original "picket fence" globe - the globe alone is probably worth $40 or more...

Nice pick-up on the Williams box. I think I have the same box in my garage but with it being all red in color. I believe these were made by MBC , I believe aka "Metal Box and Cabinet Corp. Chicago, IL. MBC made boxes with there own logo as well as Williams and you will see great similarities to Snap-On boxes of a bygone era. MBC probably made them for other companies as well.

That Pratt & Whitney sticker was intended to go on the cowling of an airplane. They were proud of their product (Dependable Engines") and wanted the passengers to look outside and see their trademark.

Little-known fact: someone at P&W decided to save money and ordered only one version of the sticker. The president of P&W looked out the window during a flight on an airliner, and noticed that the eagle was flying BACKWARDS! He insisted that there be left- and right-facing stickers so the eagle would always be flying forward! This has continued to this day.

I suspect that a prior owner of the Williams box worked in aviation, and proudly displayed the emblem of a product he was entrusted to maintain.

Welcome and nice score on the J.H. Williams box-I have a 1/2" drive ratchet/socket box with the same markings-well made and a beautiful color combination not found very often. Don't know who made it-but would like to find out myself. Now all you need to do is stock it with tools!

Saw a pic on Facebook Marketplace advertising an old tire changer.

When saw it in person, spotted that the MFG badge was missing, but did see where the rivets holding the badge would have been as seen in pic 4.

Bought it and have started to clean/disassemble, but still not sure who the mfg and how many parts might be missing.

Here is the pics of it as purchased and if anyone can let me know who mfg might have been and any missing parts, I'd appreciate it.

Mike

Mike:

I have a tire changer that looks close to what you have, although mine has a air cylinder and was made by a company out of the dakota's-think it is a BISHMAN-will have to check and uncover mine as it's buried in the shed to see if it has the name plate in the same location. Have seen several manuals at swap meets and most were made by BISHMAN. My first garage/gas station job we used a manual one like yours to do ALL tires for autos and trucks! Definately was a workout!

Reminds me of another resident lyricist around here...
:)

Picked up this box recently.
That huge pratt & Whitney decal is cool, not something you see every day. Especially stuck to a toolbox.
I suspect that a prior owner of the Williams box worked in aviation, and proudly displayed the emblem of a product he was entrusted to maintain.
:+1:

The coolest part, for me, is the adjective! "Dependable" So, er, understated for today's day and age where everything has to be superlative.

Most of the "NASA" marked tools have nothing to do with the space agency. It was a small outfit in Ohio if I recall correctly. I don't know if this "NASA" and that "NASA" are the same, but that enterprise didn't seem big enough to even merit moving overseas.

Hey Lugz. I see you picked up one of those Bonney adjustable sockets. Nice find.
It came with the ratchet! Seller did not pay attention and thought it was a socket. I was thinking of you as soon as I saw it. By the way, please post the post # or link to yours in the Bonney thread. I know you posted it but I can't find it and searches on 'adjustable socket' are yielding what you would expect! I was wondering if we ever found it in a catalog, etc. Also, be prepared to discuss its operation. I gots questions.

NASA India:dunno:
I saw MERIT India and COMPANION India today. Any USA brand you can think of has probably been “borrowed” by some overseas manufacturer at some time or another.

Thanks.

^^That's a nice box and I love the big P&W decal. Welcome and keep posting your scores.

Most of this was either free pile stuff or real cheap:

My second DP600 this month. These things almost never show up around here. Working, 99% complete and this one has the original Delta 3 phase 1HP motor and large production table. $150. Image from the CL ad.

Pratt & Whitney was formed in 1925 with encouragement from the US Navy, which needed powerful and dependable engines to power aircraft flying off its new aircraft carriers. At that time, aircraft engines were generally unreliable. First P&W engine, the "Wasp", was a breakthrough in both dependability and power-to-weight ratio.

While the Wright "Whirlwind" was made famous in 1927 by Lindbergh's flight from New York to Paris, the Wasp was powering Navy airplanes intended to be operated over oceans, and doing an excellent job of it. After P&W caught up with the Navy orders, its engines became dominant in long-distance record making flights, and helped make scheduled passenger flights possible.

The P&W slogan was exactly what was desired at the time, and at that time was indeed a "superlative."

I occasionally stumble across P&W machinist tools. Usually precision measurement tools like Starrett.

Is this from the same company that made aircraft engines. Seems like an odd combination of products.

Found a few things today.

Tall garbage can, good for brooms or steel, or what-not in the garage. About the size of a grease barrel only taller...$2

Ridgid 12" pipe wrench, no abuse...$2

Two 2" and a 3" B+C "C" clamps...$2

EL - 6B Remington 16" electric chainsaw, all there in working order, less the sprocket cover......$20. The saw in the background is another 16" similar that I inherited. And, the saw covers I am making, using a neighbour's cover from his saw.

Hey guys, I haven't had time to keep up with this thread for a while but I've still been shopping garage/estate sales, and I found something today that I could use some help identifying.

Large vintage ball pein/peen hammer, no visible markings on head or handle. Has a ribbed/ridged handle like Nupla does, except the handle is all wood instead of fiberglass/rubber. Any idea who manufactured that shape of handle in wood?? My research attempts haven't been coming up with anything. It was in better shape than most old hammers I see at sales, and the size and the unusual handle caught my eye.

Standing the whole hammer on my package scale gives a weight of 3lb 2.6oz. Hammer head laying on scale with end of handle resting away from the scale gives 3lb and like 0.2oz. So I'm guessing it's a 3lb = 48oz head.

The whole thing is about 13in from top of the head to end of the handle. Face is about 1 3/4in diameter, head is about 5 1/4in long and about 2 1/4in tall.

Also from the same estate sale, a 16in-long Stanley wood-handle slotted screwdriver. Paid $7 total for both.

Some of my garage sale find:

Parts cabinet full of handy stuff for $12

Snap-on bag $5, clamps were $2 each. Craftsman Professional screwdrivers $.50 each

Rigid multi-tool with six heads for $15 since the battery didn’t work. I show that the Ridgid jobsmart heads are compatible with my ryobi jobsmart. Ordered a battery from eBay for $20

I picked up this metal rack for $2. Not sure it’s original purpose but makes a great charging station.

A cool old pair of plumb dykes:

A cool awl:

Lastly was a kobalt 40v mower with 5amp battery and charger. The mower only runs for like a minute then turns off. I think there are some sensors I can fix but really just wanted the 5 amp battery which retails for $150. But the guy was only asking $20 for it all.

Some awesome finds lately guys:beer:

Didn't make any real big scores today. Not a lot of tools except at one place. It was a coworker of my girlfriend who passed away. Lots of tools from their work there:lol_hitti I did get all the dies and the die handle there for #7. All USA Craftsman and ACE stuff. The proto 8" adjustable I got at another sale for $.75 and the Snap-On cotter pin tool at the same sale for $.25. It has the handle off a different tool on it, but oh well.

Dave, the two P&W entities do have a connection. Frederick Rentschler had the idea for a better aircraft engine, and convinced the Navy that it was worth spending some of their limited resources to buy some if he could produce them. A relative knew the president of Pratt & Whitney, whose company produced precision machine tools in addition to precision measuring tools. P&W had capital available to invest in the new venture, and with the Navy as a sure customer, it seemed a good investment. It provided investment capital and its name to the new venture. This turned out well, and the new venture in 1929 P&W Aircraft became part of the huge United Aircraft and Transport Corporation, along with Boeing, United Airlines, and other companies.

P&W made high end supermikes and other gages, but they didn't have a full line of machinist tools... Until they bought Lufkin's line of machinist tools in the 60s. The Lufkin and P&W versions are usually identical save for markings.

Friday started out with three dead ends. Finally, at an estate sale I found the items in Photo #1.

25 foot extension cord, 12" combination square blade marked with TWIX in a diamond, small spool of copper wire, and a Barcalo Buffalo Ford script marked auto wrench. $1.50 total.

Doubling back to one of the dead ends, the guy took me back to a shed that he was too busy to show me before. This produced the Equipto 18-drawer unit for $10.00.

A TOO produced the two Eagle 5-gallon safety cans for $2.00 total. The valves are stuck, but they have some gas in them, so they don't leak.

I picked up this Workmate 300 today for $25, which didn't seem unreasonable. It has been used a lot, but it was used well. There are some welding and paint splatters and very minor chips in the plywood jaws, but it's joints & attachment points are tight and it shows no sign of abuse.
