I've seen similar Lugz, but as I mentioned before, for a specific size range and as you said, a pretty narrow band. I'd say this predated adjustables...

Found these two guys on Facebook marketplace. Plomb 5468 and Proto 5649BL. Got a couple 3/4” drive sockets too but nothing worth taking a picture of. Paid $15 for the lot.

I can see how reversing it would help cinch it up a little on itself, Outlaw, but do you see my point on the limitations? You'd need a dozen of them with different size loops. One for exhaust pipes. One for hubcaps. One for oil filters. Etc. If you told me they evolved from this to adjustable, okay, I could get behind that, but I do wonder why I have never seen any in the wild, here, or in catalogs before. Do you have something like this that you have called a strap wrench your whole life? Or are you surmising? Similarly, have you seen something like this called a strap wrench before? If so, where?

To me it looks tobe made for a tightening or loosening specific size open ended od on a old machine. Maybe a collet, flat pulley or just opened ended shaft..

It's been a while since I've posted. I found a nice bit of Plomb sockets and ratchets last week but never got around to posting. Maybe I'll just post those directly in the Plomb thread. Anyways, here's my find for this week.

49040438348_53658f0674_c.jpg

I got to an estate sale right as it was starting. It advertised Snap-on, Mac and Blue Point tools, and surprisingly, not very many people showed up! Screwdrivers, wrenches, and picks were $1 each. Sockets/extensions were $2 each. Pliers were $3 each. I was excited for the Snap-on 2nd gen hard handles as they're my favorite. One of the old Snap-on screwdrivers is a triangle handle and I've never seen one in the wild before. Kind of a neat find!

49040434808_bc3370184f_c.jpg

Picked this up at the same sale for $75. It's missing a couple pieces, so I've got to buy a few replacements.

I had a few more sales planned, but decided to call it a day after this one as I had a lot to get done at home. I kept thinking about the sale for the rest of the day and I decided to make a trip back, hopefully to find a few straggler taps and dies from the set I bought earlier. I got there as they were closing up. I grabbed another bucket and started filling it up. They guy in charge of the tools was superfriendly and excited to see me back. He kept throwing in freebies and gave me really great prices on everything else. All in I spent $25 on the second trip. Here's the pics:

49040437063_7cdbb3db66_c.jpg

Blue Point Noid set (free!)
Helicoil spark plug repair kit (free!)
Snap-on spindle rethread set ($5)
Snap-on Fuel fitting set ($5)
Blue Point butane solder gun ($1)
Blue Point screw extractor set ($1)
Blue Point metric tap and die set (not pictured, $5)

49040438253_fcd47a473d_c.jpg

Bonney 3/8 & 1/4 ratchet rebuild kits (free!)
3 Snap-on test lights ($1 each)
Snap-on Octogrip pliers ($1 each)
Blue Point cutters ($1)
4 Snap-on hex sockets and 1 Matco ($2 total)
Everything else in the photo was a freebie!

It was a nice second trip. I did end up finding a couple pieces from the tap and die kit, plus got some great deals on everything else!

Wow. They’re going to go out of business with prices like that, You.

Nice finds guys.

An ok flea market day here. Ran into some out of line high pricing from several sellers.

I grabbed a old Stillson type 8 or 10 inch wrench with duct tape stuck in the jaws out of an assorted junk box and asked how much for that and some sort of small old Harley Davidson branded zipper bag. The bag was beat to a pulp, no straps, filthy and wrecked with glue all over it. I ask the seller how much for the pair. Uh oh, he turns to a younger guy in a fanny pack for a price check. Now, in my mind I expected no more than a couple bucks on the wrench and maybe $5 or so on the bag as it was and bad shape and had held rusty drill bits, but it did say Harley. Mr fanny pack tells me $15 for both. Ouch!

I figured he held the bag in high regard because the branding on it it, so I said how much for just the wrench then? Mr fanny pack says $15!
Wtf! Sometimes I just don’t understand people. :headshake
Then he tells the older guy the wrench is a $100 bill all day long. Wtf? Where did that come from?

I told him kindly, I think you’ll be surprised to learn it’s not worth nearly that much. He says he sells them on ebay and he does “ a lot of ebay”. I laughed and told him well, I buy a lot on ebay.

He pulls his phone out and starts looking up prices, so played along and pulled my phone out. I should have left those two while I had the chance, because as I’m showing him 5 and 10 dollar listings, he spots the one listed for $149.99 that was bent besides! Hah! :lol_hitti

Can’t show people reality sometimes.

My day was saved by a some good sellers and a few odd items. What I did find:

Bonney body hammer
Proto 1/2” pebble ratchet
S-K Wayne 3/8 ratchet, good working but poor shape
Craftsman Circle U 3/8 breaker bar
Mopar 3/8 extension
Action 1/4 to 3/8 adapter
Craftsman 12mm wrench socket
Craftsman older bit driver
Diamond 12” green adjustable
S-K 12mm combo wrench
Chrome Vanadium short DBE
Gendron bicycle wrench, a cool little wrench
Diamond 8” rusty adjustable - $0.25!
Powermatic lathe wrench I think- 5 bucks, probably the deal of the day for me

The rest are all Snap On, but mainly in rough shape.

Snap On long bit diver minus the cap, Blue Point pin spanner, rough DBE, small wire cutters, Vacuum grip style cutters, orange pick, dealer screwdriver, rusty metric hex keys, broken screwdriver.

Lugz,
Your strap-lever thing is a mystery to me, but I feel like I’ve seen it somewhere before, labeled. I have a vague memory of thinking, “wait, that’s not a strap-wrench?”
With its OD web strap, I think military, but if you don’t know what it is, I can’t imagine there are many who do.

I could imagine it being used in conjunction with another strap and turn-buckle (EDIT- I meant ratcheting strap) to put tension on a tie-down or somesuch. Or used alone, as has been suggested, to tighten/loosen a fixed-diameter cylindrical end of something:
Compressed gas tank valve cover?
Artillery muzzle weather cap or flare disperser or brake?
Firefighting hose nozzles or hydrant caps?

The rounded **** end near the strap sure suggests it would roll on the strap as you applied leverage - is there compression or wear on the strap? If not, then maybe the **** fits into a notch or series of notches on a cog or rail.

Thanks for your thoughts, LS. One of the two rivets (closest to the end of the handle) has popped through the strap. Any kind of use could've done that, though. I'll keep looking and report back anything conclusive. Personally, I'm still thinking rigger/stevedore.

3bay,
As you know, there’s no point arguing with ignorance.
Fannypack obviously doesn’t know the difference between “listed” and “sold”, which can be said about a lot of antiques “dealers” I’ve run into. Afraid of pricing “below market”, their merchandise sits for YEARS while they accrue overhead, until inflation catches up, or they go out of business. Like they have no concept of cash flow.
In the mid-to-late eighties, I worked in retailing. My first boss was a buyer for a regional department store chain, headquartered in Philadelphia. After a couple weeks, I asked him if his pricing strategy was as simple as it appeared - just multiply wholesale by two. He denied it, but except for -.49 -.50 -.98 -.99. -.00 endings (which was really a way to classify stock for “sale” cycles), my observation held up pretty well. Another time, I asked why, when a sku wasn’t selling, he didn’t drop the price. “Anyone can give away merchandise.”
Yeah. Then a few months later, he’d markdown the sku to “half-price” (to what he had paid for it), and write off the “loss.”
Eventually I came to understand that money is a superstition.

The walk away tactic always works well for me with sellers like that. A famous Mark Twain quote comes to mind "never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience"

Nice finds other wise. That proto pebble ratchet is tough piece to find.

Misattributed to Mark Twain, I think. I’d like to know the text, if there is one. A good notion, at any rate. At least one GJ member has it in his signature line.

AND then, there’s
Proverbs 26:4
“Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also become like unto him.”
BUT
Proverbs 26:5
“Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.”
SO, you have support either way.

I hear ya man. Have to know when to walk.

I was happy to find the Proto. Might try and clean it up some and replace that screw. It looks like the one side was pinned down with a nail or something.

Hit the other flea today. It was a beautiful day for it.

I tried to keep my poker face when I came upon this. I saw the leather handle and thought Snappy. Opened the lid, immediately saw the ratchet and thought Craftsman. I was close and partly correct.

It’s not complete but it’s nicely intact for what’s here. $30 brought it home after a little negotiation.

The socket drawer is too darn cool. All the sockets are original except two.
Little compartment with a 1/4” set in there.

Probably for an Alemite grease fitting. The Hinsdale ones had 4 slots but I think the fittings themselves only have two pins.

Jeff- I was wondering if you’d notice the lock. Hard to believe the key was there.

It's been a while since I've posted. I found a nice bit of Plomb sockets and ratchets last week but never got around to posting. Maybe I'll just post those directly in the Plomb thread. Anyways, here's my find for this week.

Friday I drove by a unadvertised estate sale, so I turned around and checked it out. It had been running for 3-1/2 hours, so it was somewhat picked over. I found a few items. $40.00, out the door.

First photo is an industrial step stool and a shopping basket. I grabbed the basket in the shop to carry all the items shown in the next photo. The cashier priced every individual item, but neglected to charge me for the basket!

Second photo, from top:
Young 3/16 letter stamp set. Appears to be unused.

1/4 bit set. I buy these to get the holder, but these bits seem pretty decent.

Compression tester. I'll be stealing the rubber end to restore a classic Hastings compression tester.

Been looking for a GTD #7 tap wrench for work. Edit: and i mean for years. Lol I found a union butterfield wrench this size, it was USA and cheap...thought it would be good enough...found out why it was cheap. it was made too soft and flexes so much the wrench works itself loose every time its used. GTD wrenches simply stay put and don't flex like that. Top of the heap.

This tap wrench is 19-1/2" long and accepts up to a 3/4" square for big taps, like 1"-8 or 3/4 npt. These seem to hold resale very well, I've only ever seen basket cases below the $50 mark. I know there are deals out there but just couldn't find them....

Til last week, picked up this bad boy for $40!! on ebay, no less.
It is NOS in original box, dated 3/98. Little bit of surface rust, but nothing bad.
