Two Popular Mechanics (PM) screw-drivers, 1$. Sizes: No. 3 Philips and a same size flat-head.

They look and feel decent and have those ribbed tips. Don't anything about the brand, but they are made in the USA.

I have a soft spot for popular mechanics since they were my first set of tools in high school. My dad bought a whole set for my Christmas present. I still have some of them but some got lost over the last 22 years. The brand was sold at Walmart back in the 90's that i know of.

Swung by a real digger of a sale today, and it was $5 a bag. There was the remains of a lot of good stuff, but I need to slow down and don't need to pick up any new projects. But, here is what I did dig out:

New drill bits, cheap brass caliper, 6" Empire combo square, Stanley driver, Bonney ratchet, Plomb SK and Indestro sockets, Germany marked steel tape, Blackhawk flex spinner and extenion, Proto wrench and unmarked wrench and pliers. But, the real treasure was this:

I escaped last night’s festivities with a shred of dignity, no thanks to a few 32oz cans of Lunch Pail Ale from Breaker Brewing Co. and prodigious amounts of bologna, kielbasa, salami, and cheese. My buddy up there is a reverse-vegan.
A couple cups of coffee and some eggs put things to rights this morning, and I managed a second pass at Jake’s (same few vendors with the same stuff and same 18° chill as yesterday), Fensty’s, and finally Merchants Square. $2 procured two items: a Utica 93-8 Select-O-Lock adjustable and a (U) 1/4dr Craftsman ratchet, which AA did not help me identify. I guess it’s heritage-era from the enlongated C, but further research is required. Looks a little Penens-like. Edit - seems Plomb made these in the mid-to-late 1940s.
I didn’t buy the used lump of underline-C’man wheel dressing, but I thought the box was cool.

Made in Canada Mastercraft (made by Beach?) middle and lower box obtained at an estate sale. It had a Craftsman top box with it but I told them to keep that and lower the price which they did. Now tracking down a Mastercraft top box that I sold some years ago to a friend, just need to set him up with a decent replacement to get the box back.

Very slow around here, too. Due to recent knee surgery, my wife can't drive. I took her to the hairdresser Thursday, and while waiting I checked out an estate sale. It was the first day, but it had opened three hours before I got there. Judging from the Craigslist photos, it had been picked heavily by the time I arrived. I did find a few things. Total damage was $18.00.

Craftsman =V= DBE 3/4x7/8
Bonney 1/2" 23716 Combo, Loc-Rite
Drill stand fractional to 1/2"
SK 1/4 drive 10mm deep 6-point for a set I'm putting together for my son
KaStar feeler gauge
1/4" flex extension male to female (for what purpose?????)
Eklind metric hex key set
Craftsman 1/4 drive SAE 6-point sockets in a plastic box with a broken hinge. The sockets are a mixture of V, VV, and G codes, and the box has a date of 12/80 molded in.

There were a few other interesting items that had too high a price marked. This was an estate sale company, so no chance to negotiate down on the first day. Too far away to go back later.

This is only the second time I've seen a Bonney Loc-Rite wrench in the wild. Bonney is not common in this part of the country.

I'm curious as to the use for the 1/4" hex extension. It has a retention hole in the female end, so perhaps a dedicated flex Allen driver?

After being on a self imposed hiatus from auctions and sales the past couple years , I found myself going to an estate sale to pick up some items a friend had purchased .... of course I caved in. ..but only at five bucks ..plus I had never seen a metal bodied Dremel and all the original into sheets seemed present.

Here's my contribution:
Thursday was a little disappointing, starting at an industrial sale where I hoped to get a Colombian 505 vise cheap--no luck--they wanted $200 and it seemed a little sloppy when I turned the handle. The business' owner had a nice mid-sized Reed vice that he said he was keeping for himself.


Today's haul was even better--I was just going to hit the highlights, but I'm pretty excited about everything! For 17 Bucks I got:

Nearly new eye protection
Two fat-handled screwdrivers to go with an even larger one I already have
A couple of soft wire wheel cups
Two cool small oil cans--one with a cap welded to the spout to use when not using the can
Two pristine 7" Vise Grips--one standard, one hex grip
A set of Kromedge Tool&Die Makers files from Finland
A Japanese set of needle files (you can never have too many files!)
Two stamping set--one numbers, one letters
A couple of dental picks that need sharpening
An 8" Bergman Queen Bee Adjustable w/ "Pat.Pending" cast
A set of Indestro "Classic" 1/2" sockets from 7/16" thru 1"
An Indestro 5" extension for the 1/2" sockets and 3 3/8" Indestro sockets
A Stanley 12' tape measure ( I lost the one I took out on the hunt yesterday...)
A Stanley No. H1260 6' tape measure



I was going to buy the Rockwell belt sander and belts for $15 but it failed the ops check. Click, click on the trigger and not a shiver from the motor. The guy said "Well, I guess that's shot." I agreed and offered to get rid of it for him. So he gave it to me. Of course, now I have another project...



I'm new to the Indestro habit, so when I got home I started researching the sockets and realized, to my dismay, the two completely unbranded 1/2" ratchets that I decided not to buy were, in fact, the matching Indestro ratchets for my sockets--why the hell didn't Indestro mark their damn ratchets?? I hope they're still there when I go back tomorrow!

I went back to the sale and, of course, the Indestro ratchets were gone. I did pick up a 10" P&C adjustable wrench and a drive belt that may go to the Rockwell belt sander they gave me the first day.



I then called the operator of the industrial sale to ask if the Colombian 505 vise had been sold. It had not, so I headed that way. It was the 50% off day so the vise was now $100--still too much for me. I started to look more closely at the vise and saw some issues with the jaw inserts that put me off. I showed them to the guy and told him that, to me, the vise was worth no more than $20. To get me up to $25 he threw in a 9" Vise Grip and a wooden plane but he left it up to me to pull the vise off the bench. Luckily, I had that P&C adjustable wrench.

After I loaded everything in the car I cruised back in to make sure there wasn't anything I'd missed. I found a couple of 12" buffer wheels and a pair of Starrett 25-441 dial indicators covered in grit. I thought if I could get him down to $10 I'd go for it. He started at $5! I decided to press my luck and said I'd buy, but asked him to include a second Vise Grip. He was apparently in a good mood or just wanted to get rid of me because he threw it in.



My luck took a 180 degree turn after I got the vise wire wheeled and saw the damage was more than I anticipated. The top part of both jaws are broken and brazed back on--with the repair on the dynamic side compromised again. I posted it up on the Vise Thread to see if the experts have any advice.

hey Old Radar... nice P&C adjustable wrench. you should post a pic in the P&C tool thread.
Also those Starrett indicators are my favorite for truing up lathe work. very smoothe.

That was the one! I had use for some functional items, as the collector stuff was so overpriced. I'll use the KaStar feeler gauges to "restore" a rusty set.

That Collins hand sledge was way overpriced!

Edit: they’re used to turn ratcheting wrenches into low profile ratchets. Kind of like an extension for when the head of the bolt is recessed just a bit but with tight clearance. Makes me think of a hard to reach pulley bolt that’s right against the radiator fan on an 88 land cruiser...

A set of socket caps serve a similar purpose. I had to replace a washer on a leaky timing chain tensioner on my M3. It was in an awkward spot and requires a deep socket, but if the socket is too deep the A/C line is in the way and you can't fit a ratchet. It was looking like cutting a deep impact socket down was my only choice. I found these and it made it into a 5 minute job using a deep socket I already had. That's the only time I've ever had to use them, but I sure got my $4 worth.

I started cleaning up some of my flea market finds from last Thursday (I was away since then...), and it turns out that 4" adjustable crescent-type wrench is a MILTEX. That was a postwar "West Germany" company. I have never see any crescent-type adjustables marked with a jaw width before, but that's what the 1/4" marking refers to. Not capacity, which is obviously much greater. Literally the width of the jaws, as is more typical of talking about with respect to vises. That's not a spec I am used to seeing associated with crescent-type adjustable wrenches.

Re: Funny Thing Happened on Way Back from VA

ja, thought so, too. upon check-out - first of two 25' lengths of hose was shot, one cutting tip had been used as a hammer (why is this so common?!) but was able to re-open the preheat holes to correct size. new o-rings all around and it's in business - using gas still in the bottles.
you should see the stereo equipment haul i made last week...
