Damn, this year is starting out pretty solid even with the pandemic. No sales or auctions around here worth hitting yet this year. I feel like I'm missing out. I can't even go on the hunt which is the best part. Most auctions have gone online and tag sales have been sparse. I'm starting to get amped up. I'm done with winter.

A lot of the local estate sales here have gone online, and one of my favorite companies to deal with is doing this exclusively right now. But that is expensive and for some types of sales not really practical, so many of the smaller companies are filling that void. I have never been an auction kinda guy so I just avoid them.

I picked up this rolling tool cabinet last weekend from a local auction house. Thanks to a lead from GJ member Sam3 Customs in the toolboxes of GJ thread, I believe it can safely be identified as a cabinet for a Sun Scope Tune-up Tester 300 (era unknown).

I paid $10 plus $1 auction fee.

- Brian

It's definitely a Sun cabinet. I have a large one (not sure which unit it held) that I use for a rolling fab cabinet/table. I took the chrome handles off. Are you in need of the handles?

Spent part of the day hitting various Restores, picking up the following for about $3.50:

Aluminum hard hat for a project, Proto grind off socket, Penens socket, Duro/Indestro hex key set, Thorsen spinner and an Xcelite shorty.

Agreed. Brian, there's one just like yours on the Sun thread somewhere. Use the Index in the Sticky. Page 3 or thereabouts. It has a huge gorgeous Sun logo decal on it that looks easy for someone to graphically replicate for you. It would really pop.

Aluminum hard hat for a project,
The hard hat is fantastic.
:+1:

I'd love to see the inside, especially the suspension system, Beemer. I see the rivets. Maybe your "Hole" thread, so we don't sidetrack? Up to you. ? I've got a vintage Diamond Alkali hard hat in the Lugzsonian that looks like an M1 hemlet liner.

--------------------------------------

I wasn't skunked this morning at the flea market (Lugz 2021_07), but it wasn't exactly one of my better take-aways either. The 90* angle in the otherwise very nice example of a vintage BAHCO VOLVO kit wrench is unfortunate. The Klein wirestrippers are goners, but I had never seen these kinds of markings on handles before, so I bought them ($1 table) just to look at them at home. The knife is homemade, or at least the aluminum handle is.

Today's flea finds (Lugz 2021_08) were dominated by paper. There must've been twenty cardboard boxes on five tables stuffed with vintage books, magazines, brochures, etc, all from the same estate sale. My back hurts from standing there going through it. The cardboard box in the back on the right is filled. I pulled out some of the more garage related articles for the pic. Other items are a 30's or 40's era knife sharpener, a whetstone that might fit the Emergency Fishing Kit from last week, a vintage flint torch igniter, and another set of brace chuck jaws I intend to use as tiny pinchers.

Nice finds Lugz! There will be nothing for me as the wife and I are heading to the coast for a few days, as my birthday is tomorrow! Which is just as well, as I don't see any really good sales this weekend, so far at least.

Thank you, everyone!

Heading to Yachats for a little coastal time.

Happy birthday!
I’ve been there. Love the Oregon coast. You’re probably acquainted with this little place.

First minimal score of the New Year for me. A couple of Record 8” G cramps ( English nomenclature here) and a pair of 3/4” Pony pipe clamps, one minus the pipe. CL find from a few miles down the coast, so ran out between meetings. Most importantly, the dry spell is broken.

Looks like the Records are from about 1967 - 2000, light weight woodworking, not heavy duty. Light threads, tiny pinned wing nuts. But at 8”, a decent reach in a small package.

Went to a local antique marketplace today hoping to make out like a bandit with a whole bunch of tools. Unfortunately I only have one thing to show for my efforts. I picked up a Utica 818 hog ring plier for 5$ that is in amazing shape! I don't even have to clean it!!! Woohooo!!

Also, happy birthday BMW!

No sales going on up here in my neck o' the woods. I'm still prowling FB Marketplace for bargains, but I'm currently motivated to clear stuff out as I prepare to put heat in the new garage, which means insulation and drywall, which means less room for my treasures. Hmmm, maybe I need to have a sale......

Made it to my first estate sale this year. Arrived 15 minutes after opening and found most of the tools were gone. This is what I managed to purchase for $14:

- Macklanburg-Duncan metal 36” ruler
- 16” Johnson USA combination square
- NIB Streamlight HPL USB
- Craftsman 41715 reversible ratcheting screwdriver, 5-Piece
- NIB Bosch masonry bits, 1/2” & 3/8”
- NIB Dremel chuck
- Medical tweezers

I knew the Streamlight was a steal for $1 but was shocked to find it selling on Amazon for $95. Good start to 2021!

Happy Birthday, Beemer!!

Quick post of yesterday's sales on my way out to one more this morning.

Finally filled the anchor point of my #1714 S-K Combo pouch with this C-40 1-1/4" wrench. Still looking for the C-38 & C-36.
The #1 & #2 8-in-1 Thread files are unused.
Thorsen spinner, Snoopy Dzus fastener wrench (need to find what STI is), Doublet 10x Loupe and Craftsman 0-1" micrometer rounded out the first sale. Total $15.

Next sale was a long drive but at least I didn't come up completely empty. Nice 0-1" Brown & Sharpe mic in a nice case; $10.

That's just not right...

Great finds, OR! My maternal grandfather (RIP) was a toolmaker at B&S. He passed away when I was 13, and I have nothing from his tool collection. I do have his accordion (he had his own Irish music band, was his first love and second job).

Old Radar that B&S micrometer in the box is amazing. So many machinists tools are so well preserved because of the care they had to use. I have told myself "no more micrometers"... but I would have swooped that up in an instant.

Zip94 - you **** on that Streamlight price! With todays flashlights, the old Maglights just don't hold up for brightness. I still think their build quality and longevity is unmatched, but even their LED offerings disappoint me by comparison when it comes to brightness.

Going out to a sale today but not sure what to expect yet.

20*F and worse with the windchill this morning (Lugz 2021_09) kept most vendors away, but I brought home some smalls from the pair of guys who cleaned out the old machine shop. I knew they'd be there because they had to return the rental truck yesterday.

attachment.php

Both boxes are empty. I had to talk them into selling them to me.

The Bridgeport Machines box had a bunch of miscellaneous metal stock in it. They thought it was a set of something. I had a holder for stubs and square stock with the same vintage label on it, but they got mad I dumped the bits out of it and refused to sell it to me. They were insisting on selling them as sets. They had a dozen of them, and I can guarantee they will all still be there tomorrow. It's a seller I swore I would not do business with, and I now I'm going to have to re-swear it. I'm disappointed because it was the only one with a vintage water transfer decal. The others were newer with stickers. Maybe I'll renege and see what he wants for it with the junk in it.

I am guessing the wooden fingerjointed box had a micrometer or a transfer punch or something in it. Somebody else must've grabbed that. I just like the box.

That DOE wrench is a wartime Billings Vitalloy M1028-S that I needed.

The 4" No. 4 (8ths, 16ths, 32nds, and 64ths) steel rule is a Starrett with a satin finish (no reflections under a close light).

An old, original Stubs gauge literally worn down smooth from handling, the Lilliputian Huot drill index and a very interesting (unique, in my experience) Armstrong knuckle joint round out the finds.

Well Happy Birthday to you BMW! Hope you have a good weekend.

Lugz, nice to see you pressing on in the winter weather. At first glance i thought that was a Williams u joint. A lot of parallels between them.

I ran the dog out to the groomer this morning and stopped at two yard sales. I may have been first at sale #1 but the woman seemed miserable and none of the guy stuff was what I’m after. Suddenly it was swarmed with people and I’m certain every car was following the rest. I almost forgot what early garage saling is like!

Sale #2 was the one I was trying to find. I met a really cool shop minded fellow there and we had a nice chat. He’s a vise enthusiast who sometimes visits here.

Here was my $2 haul.

Well I made it out to the last day of an estate sale and spent $8 on this stuff. A pair of pliers from an old kids tool set, a small adjustable wrench with no markings, a couple light sockets, a PLVMB 3/8 5270 swivel, and this old Long C Craftsman rotary tool kit.

Here is the kit before and after about 30 minutes of cleaning. The cord is shot, I may replace that just to get it running (safely?) Maybe a little work on the cardboard insert... I see where this is going and it scares me.

Edited to add: The tool is not marked in any way. I assume it is the original Craftsman tool that came with the box, but it is unusual that it is not marked. Does anyone know if it is original?

Aaaaaargh! I found a picture of an old Craftsman rotary tool set and found that it is indeed the Craftsman tool, but it is apparently missing an accessory handle. that explains the shape of the cutout in the cardboard insert.

(NOT my picture)

Another good day for me. Went to an estate sale of a ford motorhead that built racers. Tons of old carbs, water pumps, cams, valves, etc. Spent about 2 hours digging through the dusty shop looking in the crooks, crannies, and even the rafters. People were making out like bandits with boxes of old ford dealer/manufacturing manuals, machinest books, magazines on how to tune up different parts of old fords to turn them into performance engines, Craftsman heritage metal lathe with all the gears and parts, and a benchtop mill (sadly was out of my price range but was a great buy for the guy that did home machining)

This is what I picked up:

Stanley rule & level no 27 and 132 liberty bell planes, no cracks in any of the wood which is very rare for AZ
Sargent combination plane
Pexto? No 2 hand plane
Craftsman Sander in a Crowntop box with manual, sheets of paper, etc
Heathkit exhaust gas analyzer
Tap & drill bit index
1:30 speed reducer
Dayton 1hp AC motor
Millers Falls Card Scraper
Nye pipe wrench
NOS in the box Vise Grip jr 5WR
Misc hand tools, Klein, Craftsman, Indestro, Snapon
Craftsman (12" I think?) Heritage logo/King Seeley Drill press, this thing has some serious mass to it! Will be an interesting restoration project for me.

All for $100

The planes were packed in a box and stuck in a corner under the bench so no one saw them until I went under the bench with a flashlight and pulled the box out and opened it. Definately my favorite surprise during the sale.

I have the same Bridgeport box and it has a 3" diameter boring head for the mill. The original mill owner told me it was purchased with the mill.

The box also head some boring bars and HSS tool bits for use with the boring head.

Well, None of this is today or even 2021, but I was working on my van and found a Proto 5466 Breaker I had picked up some time earlier I guess it fell and I didn't see it... What I like about it is its 12" long so a practical breaker (most 3/8 breakers are no longer than a 3/8 Ratchet...)

The other was a Christmas gift from my eldest daughter. Its a "Gem" Press, and I found a little history on it:

H.C. Pomeroy gem set

Henry Charles Pomeroy (1849-?) was the son of Watson Young Pomeroy and Ann Eliza Kellogg Pomeroy. At the age of 15 he joined the Illinois Cavalry, fighting for the Union Army during the Civil War. Henry married Mary Elizabeth Brewer 24 Jun 1873. Henry was an inventor who lived for a time in Chicago, IL. He patented the following versions of the "Gem Set", a riveting and stamping devise, in the early 1900s:

1900 - Received patent for a "Combined Riveting and Punching Machine"
1902 - Received patent for a "Riveting Machine"
1905 - Received patent for the "Gem Set"
1906 - Received patent for a "Hook and Eylet Setting Machine"
1909 - Received patent for a "Seal Press"

I stopped by the Quakertown flea, today, nearly deserted in subfreezing temps and 20mph gusts of windchill. Nada.
Put in 2-1/2hrs of huddling in the cold, noisy wind on Haycock Mountain, relieving my shame a bit for not hunting more, on this last day of SEPA extended season. Nada.
Stopped in at an antiques co-op, and spotted a sparkplug wrench with Simmons two-way arrow logo. I know nothing of it, and left it there. But I could not resist a Walden 1522 (11/16) fixed-socket spinner for $1.48.

LS: BOTH of those items are pretty cool, you showed remarkable strength to leave the Simmons wrench behind, lol...
